Pontiac G6 2006 problems
The Pontiac G6 is a mid-size car that was produced by General Motors under the Pontiac brand. It was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year to replace the Grand Am.
The G6 shared the GM Epsilon platform with the Chevrolet Malibu, Saab 9-3 and other General Motors vehicles. Features included a remote starting system (standard on GT, optional on base model), traction control/ABS, electronic stability control, automatic headlights as well as a panoramic sunroof option. A retractable hardtop convertible was offered for model years 2006-2009. Production ended in 2010 with the discontinuation of the Pontiac line.
With the G6, Pontiac introduced a two-digit naming convention, with the Pontiac G8 a class above the G6 and the Pontiac G5 a class below. In the case of the G6, the nameplate designated it as the sixth generation of its predecessor, the Pontiac Grand Am.

Common Pontiac G6 2006 problems
The 2006 Pontiac G6 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily with power steering, engine, and accessories.
Power steering issues are the most prevalent, affecting around 72,000 miles. These problems are caused by the electric power steering motor wearing out, leading to power steering failures. Replacing the entire motor costs approximately $1,400.
Engine problems include the engine being unable to start, which occurs around 65,000 miles. This issue is often due to a dirty throttle body, which can be replaced for around $500.
Interior accessories problems, particularly with the CD player, are also common. The only solution to this problem is to install a new CD player, which costs around $300.
There are also several recalls related to the power steering system, broken steering shafts, and transmission shift cables, which increase the risk of an accident. These recalls affect the entire G6 production run, from 2005 to 2010.
The 2006 Pontiac G6 has a life expectancy of around 150,000 miles, which is roughly half as long as top competitors like the Toyota Camry. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than rivals, according to Repair Pal at $403 per year.
In addition to these common problems, some 2005 Pontiac G6 units have problems with their power steering, which also affects the 2006 and 2007 model years. Many of the affected owners encountered this problem at around 70,000 miles, but 2007 model year owners noticed this issue at around 100,000 miles.
The NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes and 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal and that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk.
The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, and that issue extends to newer model years as well.
Overall, the 2006 Pontiac G6 has a history of several common problems, particularly with power steering, engine, and accessories. These issues can lead to expensive repairs and decreased safety, making the vehicle a potentially risky choice for buyers.

Pontiac G6 2006 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the Pontiac G6 2006.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured April 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006, and 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
- Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly, free of charge. The recall began February 24, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14772. Note: This is an expansion of recall 14V-153 to cover additional vehicles built between April 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006.
- Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.
- Consequence: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will refund the purchase price or replace the steering shafts, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
- Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 29, 2014, that they are recalling 56,214 model year 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura vehicles. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.
- Consequence: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the PARK position, the transmission may not be in PARK. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and GM dealers will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14152.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC

In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
- Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. Bulletin 14115 covers model year 2004-2007 Saturn Ion, 2009-2010 Chevrolet HHR and 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts. Dealers will replace the EPS motor. Bulletin 14116 covers model year 2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, 2005-2006 Pontiac G6 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from March 1, 2008, through June 27, 2008. This is the 4th car I have owned, and despite being warned not to buy this brand due to the way Pontiacs usually turn out, I absolutely love my car! It's by far my favorite, and I'm pretty sure I will drive it until it just won't go anymore. I love the way it drives and handles, and it's very spacious and great for long trips. If you take care of it and drive it gently, it will last you forever :)

I purchased my Pontiac G6 GTP used in February 2007 and unfortunately lost it in an accident in July 2008. The car had excellent acceleration and performed well on both city streets and long trips. The stereo system was particularly impressive, with great bass. While some of the paint chipped off the radio's on/off button and the knobs/buttons seemed a bit cheap, this was only a minor drawback. The car averaged approximately 19 miles per gallon in the city and 23 on the highway. While the current high gas prices may make it difficult to choose a higher performing car over a more efficient one, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the G6 GTP and will always remember it fondly.

Living in Chicago, we found that convertibles wouldn't be practical due to the cloth top and poor insulation. Although hardtops were too expensive, we found a great compromise with this car. The design is rich and looks great, and while there are some cost-cutting measures, they are not terrible. While we do miss some features like the memory seat and leather trim, we can live without them. The retractable button overhead can be uncomfortable to hold down for the entire minute it takes to complete, but it's manageable. Additionally, there is not much trunk space, but the car can comfortably seat four people. Overall, we love it!

I recently purchased the 06 G6 GTP sedan and I absolutely love it! The car is fast, the stereo is loud and the panoramic roof is excellent. There's tons of room in the back to get my 5 year old in and out, making it perfect for families. If you're looking for a car that combines performance and practicality, this is definitely the way to go. Everyone who drives it absolutely loves it, so I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I purchased a 2006 G6 GT in November of 2005 when they first came out. I couldn't stand not having the power I used to have in my Grand Prix GTP, so I traded in the GT for the G6 GTP. It's an eye-catching black sports coupe, and I absolutely love everything about it!

I purchased this car with 19,000 miles and have since experienced several issues, including the need to replace mirror covers multiple times, uncontrollable shaking while braking, a clicking sound when turning, and a burning smell and metal rubbing sound with acceleration at 61,000 miles. These issues are concerning, and I would not recommend this car to others.

The Pontiac G6 convertible may not have been the most reliable car, but the engine and transmission have been trouble-free. Unfortunately, the car experienced several quality issues, including rattling roof, loose trim, poor paint quality, and muffler leaks. During the first year of ownership, the car spent at least six weeks in the dealer for repairs. Despite complaints to customer service, no one seemed to care. It is not surprising that the lack of quality and customer service contributed to the downfall of the Pontiac brand. Fortunately, there are many other options available outside of GM.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2006 Pontiac G6 V6 3.5L that I purchased with 40,000mi in 2/2007. At the time, I was really excited to invest in an American-made car and chose a GM model. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with the brakes, rotors, ball joints, headlights, and tail lights, and even had to take it in for a recall recently. Despite this, I'm still grateful for the time I've had with my car. However, with my odometer now at 151,000mi, I'm starting to explore other options in the foreign market. Thanks for listening!

I purchased this car with 30,000 miles and was initially impressed with its appearance after a slick up and detailing, especially the convertible top. While I was expecting a sporty ride with lower mpg, the car's fuel efficiency has worsened significantly as it has aged, getting only 16 mpg in the city (more like 10) and 24 mpg on the highway (more like 18). Unfortunately, the coolant system has been problematic since I bought the car, with a patchwork of connectors and hoses that are difficult to replace. The driver's wheel hub assembly failed at 60,000 miles, and the paint on the outside windshield panel on the driver's side has peeled off. I regret not paying closer attention to the paint quality when I bought the car, as it is worse than even the cheapest cars. While the leather seats are durable, they do not feel high quality and seem more like vinyl. The seat leather started to split, but it was repaired. The exhaust started to hiss when accelerating, and the interior is made of hard, cheap plastic that has not aged well, even with the use of visors. The AC control group back light burned out, and the cheap LEDs are soldered in and cannot be easily replaced. The gear shift lights also went out, making it difficult to see which gear I was in without turning on the overhead lights. Despite regular maintenance and timely fluid changes, I experienced an overheating issue on the highway, which was caused by a busted heater core at 110,000 miles. The engine seems to be in good condition, although there may have been some damage to the heads due to overheating. Driving with the top down is a lot of fun, although the door sill is quite high and you may need to raise your seat to feel comfortable. The car has a unique and enjoyable feel, but it does tend to rattle when driving over rough roads. Despite this, the car has been reliable with no issues with the engine or transmission. However, after reading about potential problems with the transmission at 150,000 miles, I decided to sell the car before any issues arose. Although it needed some repairs to be fully reliable, it was still a good car after nine years. It is currently for sale at a used car lot for a high price, but it may not be worth the investment given the brand's reputation for not lasting long. While I wanted to support American-made cars, I ultimately chose an Asian car for its reliability.

I was really excited to get this car when it first came out and have now had it for just over 2 years. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with it, including multiple trips to the shop for stabilitrak. While the dealership didn't make any claims against my warranty, I was able to get it fixed. I did have to pay out of pocket for front and back brakes due to concerns about the stabilitrak issue, but I've since purchased an Extended Warranty. I did recently discover a hole in my muffler, which unfortunately isn't covered by the warranty. I've also noticed some squeaks and rattles that the dealer hasn't been able to fix. Overall, it's been a bit of a bumpy ride, but I'm hopeful that things will improve.
