Pontiac G6 problems

The Pontiac G6 is a mid-size car that was produced by General Motors under the Pontiac brand. It was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year to replace the Grand Am.

The G6 shared the GM Epsilon platform with the Chevrolet Malibu, Saab 9-3 and other General Motors vehicles. Features included a remote starting system (standard on GT, optional on base model), traction control/ABS, electronic stability control, automatic headlights as well as a panoramic sunroof option. A retractable hardtop convertible was offered for model years 2006-2009. Production ended in 2010 with the discontinuation of the Pontiac line.

With the G6, Pontiac introduced a two-digit naming convention, with the Pontiac G8 a class above the G6 and the Pontiac G5 a class below. In the case of the G6, the nameplate designated it as the sixth generation of its predecessor, the Pontiac Grand Am.

Common Pontiac G6 problems

The Pontiac G6 is a popular car model known for its sleek design and reliable performance. However, like any other vehicle, the G6 has its share of common problems that car owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most common issues with the Pontiac G6 based on complaints from owners:

  • Faulty Power Steering: Some 2005 Pontiac G6 units have problems with their power steering, and this issue is also present in the 2006 and 2007 model years. Many of the affected owners encountered this problem at around 70,000 miles, but 2007 model year owners noticed this issue at around 100,000 miles. The problem is often due to a faulty power steering pump or a leak in the power steering system.
  • Unresponsive Door Locks: Another common problem with the Pontiac G6 is unresponsive power locks. This issue affects various parts of the car's locking system, including the door locks and the trunk release. Owners have reported that the locks may stop working altogether or may only work intermittently.
  • Unusual Noises: Some G6 owners have reported unusual noises coming from their cars, including grinding noises when turning, whining noises from the engine, and rattling noises from the dashboard. These noises can be caused by various factors, including worn-out brake pads, a damaged serpentine belt, or loose interior panels.
  • Catalytic Converter Issues: Some G6 models have issues with their catalytic converters, which can cause the car to run poorly or fail emissions tests. This issue is often caused by a faulty oxygen sensor or a clogged catalytic converter.

In conclusion, while the Pontiac G6 is a reliable and popular car model, it is not without its share of common problems. Owners have reported issues with faulty lighting, faulty power steering, unresponsive door locks, unusual noises, and catalytic converter problems. If you are considering purchasing a Pontiac G6, it is essential to be aware of these common issues and to have any potential problems inspected and addressed by a qualified mechanic.

  • Summary: About 6 months ago I believe I file a complaint about this same issue and here I am again. A few nights ago driving home from the movies with my kids out of nowhere my headlights go out so I had to use my fog lights to make it home. I can't understand how isn't this a safety issue and why hasn't anyone done anything about it or why isn't there a recall. What is the wait? Are we waiting for a tragedy to occur to then do something?? This is like the 3 or 4th time that it has happened. Where is the urgency on this matter?? Or will I have to make a petition with other G6 owners that also have had this issue?? Some feedback would be nice on what to do or do I have to continue to spend $$$ with 0 results. Would appreciate some response and some results.

Sorry to hear about the issues you've been having with your car. It sounds like it's been a frustrating experience for you and your family. I hope that the dealership is able to address these issues for you and make things right. It's understandable that you're looking forward to the end of your lease, and I hope that your next vehicle is a better fit for your needs. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  2. Price Williamson 2025-04-10

    Vehicle year: 2006

I have owned my 2006 Pontiac G6 for nearly five years. Unfortunately, it has been a source of disappointment due to numerous maintenance issues that began at just 12,000 miles. These issues include problems with the engine, electronic steering, wheels, and paint. Additionally, the interior plastic parts are of poor quality and continue to break or pop off. The headlights have also experienced condensation, and the CD player has recently stopped working. Despite my diligent care, this vehicle has resulted in a constant stream of repair bills.

  3. Jaime Boyer 2025-04-04

    Vehicle year: 2008

At 60k, we have replaced various parts related to the transmission, brakes, power steering, and CD changer. Unfortunately, the key fob batteries stopped working within 6 months. Every now and again, it simply refuses to start altogether, and the dealer can't duplicate the problem. However, we are happy to replace the car as a solution. We also experience some strut noises and rattles. In the long run, it may be more cost-effective to purchase a Honda Accord when you factor in repairs and depreciation. Although you may get this car for much less now, you may end up paying the same amount in the long run and experience some discomfort along the way.

  4. Garnett Rippin 2025-04-01

I bought a new G6 in early 2005. It looks very sporty and I get lots of compliments on its appearance. However, I have had a lot of problems with the car. Within the first two weeks, I had to take it to the shop to have a new amp installed because the original one stopped working. I also had to get the driver's side sunvisor and the backseat cupholder fixed. Additionally, the automatic lock on the passenger's door did not work and had to be fixed. There was also a clicking sound on the driver's door, which was fixed, and a new starter was installed. Finally, the sunroof had to be fixed because of a constant rattle. Unfortunately, my experience with this car has made me decide to never buy another Pontiac again.

  5. Quinn Douglas 2025-03-26

    Vehicle year: 2009

I have owned this car for a year now and I am looking forward to upgrading soon. Although I bought it used with 40k in June 2010, I have had some issues with it. For instance, I noticed that the carpet in the back was wet a week after purchase. I initially thought it was a seal in the door, but it turned out to be something else. I have been experiencing some problems with the driver headlight, which doesn't work properly. I have had the bulb replaced and wiring tightened, but it still comes on and off at random. Additionally, the brake lights stay on all the time, except when I'm using my brakes. I had the brake light switch replaced, but it still doesn't work properly. Lastly, the silver/chrome interior is peeling and looks unsightly. I had a 1999 grand prix that I loved, and although this car has been a bit of a disappointment, I am hopeful that my next car will be better.

Finding parts for the retractable hardtop convertible can be difficult since not many of these were made. However, driving this car is a lot of fun. Although it has front-wheel drive, driving in the snow can be difficult without the right tires. I love the way this car handles around curves and it's quick off the start. Before driving with the top down, make sure the back seat belts are tucked in to avoid rattling. At night, the inside dash lights light up in red, which is a totally unique experience. Overall, I absolutely love my Pontiac G6 hardtop convertible!

  2. Adolf Rodriguez 2025-04-16

Congratulations on your new car! It sounds like you made a great choice with the G6. With its 3.6L V6 engine, monsoon stereo, 6 CD changer, fog lights, power pedals, chrome wheels, and more, it's definitely a head turner. You've had a great experience with it so far, with only one owner who replaced everything that goes out at high mileage. It's a very sporty and fun car for a daily commute, and I'm glad to hear that you've had zero problems with it, except for the windshield that you had to replace. As someone who has owned their first nice car, you'd definitely recommend it to someone who is looking for a nice, cheap, sporty car. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Jettie Corwin 2025-04-12

The G6 hardtop convertible is definitely the best value in its segment. It has met or exceeded all expectations and has been relatively free of surprises. The only noticeable negative is the interior plastics. However, GM has done a great job in making this a truly affordable and modern 4-seat convertible. The top mechanism is quite complicated, so it may be wise to purchase an extended warranty. The power of the 3.5L engine is fine, but it occasionally feels sluggish at highway passing speeds. Surprisingly, the fuel economy exceeds the EPA estimates by 10-15%. The transmission is well-mated to the engine, and the car handles well, with the exception of a wide turning radius. Best of all, it provides a rock-solid ride.

Coming from a Saab, you'll find this car to be a blast to drive, whether the top is up or down. After some minor rattle repairs, you'll enjoy a very quiet and smooth ride.

I bought my 06 G6 GTP sedan 3 years ago with 49,000 miles and now have 80,000 miles. I had to change my brakes after a while and opted for the best ceramic pads and cheaper rotors. Although my brakes were initially loud and squeaky, I managed to fix the issue by using acid wheel cleaner on the rotors to get the glaze off. The wheel bearing hub assembly on the front passenger side went out around 60k, but it was an easy fix that only cost me $120. That's the only issue I've had so far. I highly recommend getting your transmission fluid and filter changed at 50k and every 30k thereafter, which only costs $80. I just changed my spark plugs today, which cost me $44.88. Although the dealer recommends changing them at 100,000 miles, I found that mine were definitely due at 75,000. I suggest using the OEM AC Delco plugs, specifically the 'iridium' ones. Also, make sure to replace all parts with AC Delco or you may run into problems.
