Pontiac G6 2007 problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac G6 is a mid-size car that was produced by General Motors under the Pontiac brand. It was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year to replace the Grand Am.

The G6 shared the GM Epsilon platform with the Chevrolet Malibu, Saab 9-3 and other General Motors vehicles. Features included a remote starting system (standard on GT, optional on base model), traction control/ABS, electronic stability control, automatic headlights as well as a panoramic sunroof option. A retractable hardtop convertible was offered for model years 2006-2009. Production ended in 2010 with the discontinuation of the Pontiac line.

With the G6, Pontiac introduced a two-digit naming convention, with the Pontiac G8 a class above the G6 and the Pontiac G5 a class below. In the case of the G6, the nameplate designated it as the sixth generation of its predecessor, the Pontiac Grand Am.

Common Pontiac G6 2007 problems

The 2007 Pontiac G6 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily in the areas of steering, lighting, and oil leaks.

  • Steering Problems: Steering issues are the most common complaint from owners, appearing around 50,000 miles. The steering makes clunking and snapping noises, with the steering shaft being the source of the problem. Replacing the shaft costs around $1,000.
  • Headlight Failures: Frequent headlight burn-outs are a widespread issue, happening at around every 15,000 miles. Replacing the bulbs costs about $100, and some owners install a new headlight housing for roughly $300.
  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks are another common issue on models with about 80,000 miles. The oil pan gasket wears out as the vehicle ages, costing around $400 to replace.
  • Power Steering Issues: Some 2005 Pontiac G6 units have problems with their power steering, which is also present in the 2006 and 2007 model years. Many affected owners encountered this problem at around 70,000 miles, but 2007 model year owners noticed this issue at around 100,000 miles.
  • Faulty Lighting: One of the major 2008 and 2009 Pontiac G6 problems is faulty lighting. In fact, for the 2009 model year alone, there are reports of faulty headlights, brake lights, and door ajar lights. As for the 2008 model year, owners have reported issues with its low beams, headlights, and brake lights.

In addition to these issues, there are five recalls for the 2007 G6, including a steering u-joint, power steering motor failures, and transmission cables, which all increase the risk of an accident.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-29
  • VIN: 1G2ZH35N274
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: After purchasing my 2007 Pontiac G6 from a private seller, I quickly noticed a significant decline in steering responsiveness within just four days. A mechanic later confirmed that the entire steering rack needs replacement, and the cost of this exceeds the current value of the vehicle itself. This abrupt failure of such a critical component renders the car unsafe to drive. The specific component that failed is the steering rack, and it is available for inspection upon request. The safety risk emerged as the vehicle became increasingly difficult to control, heightening the potential for accidents and injuries to both myself and others on the road. While the problem has been confirmed by an independent service center, it has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or any other entities. No warning lamps or messages were indicating an issue with the steering system before the failure. The decline in steering responsiveness happened suddenly, and no pre-existing symptoms were evident. Given the severity of this safety concern, I strongly urge the NHTSA to promptly investigate and consider a recall. Failure to address this potential defect could result in preventable accidents and injuries to drivers, passengers, and other motorists. Your expeditious attention to this matter is crucial for ensuring public safety.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-18
  • VIN: 1G2ZH18N274
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: GM has routed the high pressure power steering line up against the header exhaust. This was done consciously due to the fact that the manufacture put a foil heat shield sleeve on that section of the line. Anyone with a spec of engineering insight will confirm that this foil sleeve is a postponed or bandaid for the issue. It's not a fix nor a solution but a delay in the failure of the line. The thousands of exact same issues online reassures my assessment. The immediate conversion to manual steering with the rear tires covered in power steering fluid doesn't seem to fit well on an on ramp while elder driving. Thank you for your time.

My engine light isn't working and yet I have engine codes my service air bag light comes on at random my buckle seat belt light won't go off it stays on when I'm buckled in the driver's seat. My pressure sensor on my fuel tank has low voltage issues. When shutting the car off and opening the driver door all accessories that should of shut off are still active including the radio. The oil light is always turning on but the vehicle isn't low on oil nor does the message appear. When plugging in a car scanner the anti theft system light turns on and at random times will shut the car off. When the car scanner gets plugged in the rpms drop for a second and then go up as well. At times only one of my headlights work and I have to smack the headlight that isn't working to get it working.

Pontiac G6 2007 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the Pontiac G6 2007.

2015-02-04
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured April 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006, and 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
  • Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly, free of charge. The recall began February 24, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14772. Note: This is an expansion of recall 14V-153 to cover additional vehicles built between April 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006.
2014-07-21
  • Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.
  • Consequence: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will refund the purchase price or replace the steering shafts, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492.
2014-05-14
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
  • Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.
2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 29, 2014, that they are recalling 56,214 model year 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura vehicles. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.
  • Consequence: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the ‘PARK’ position, the transmission may not be in ‘PARK.’ If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and GM dealers will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14152.

  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 208, 'OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION.' THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SEATS IN THESE VEHICLES ARE BUILT WITH A PASSENGER AIR BAG SENSING SYSTEM. WHEN TESTED WITH A REPRESENTATIVE, UNRESTRAINED SIX YEAR OLD CHILD, THE SYSTEM IS REQUIRED TO TURN OFF THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER'S AIRBAG. INTERFERENCE DURING SYSTEM CALIBRATION CAUSED THE SEATS TO BE OUT OF SPECIFICATION.
  • Consequence: THIS CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO A CHILD SEAT OCCUPANT DURING CERTAIN CRASH CONDITIONS.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL WILL BEGIN ON APRIL 17, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.

Negative Pontiac G6 2007 car reviews

  1. Rhiannon Conroy 2024-10-20

I see that you own a few GM products, that's great! It sounds like you really enjoy driving with the top down, and I can definitely understand why. Currently, you have three convertibles and a T-Top in your stable, that's quite the collection! I can see why the G6 caught your eye, with its hardtop convertible aspect and sleek exterior. It's fantastic that you've been able to drive it every day without worrying about the weather, thanks to the hardtop. With your prior experience owning muscle cars, I'm excited to hear your thoughts on the G6. Let's start with your favorite features!

  2. Dillon Williamson 2024-09-17

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share an experience I had with my car recently. I noticed that my car can be taken out of gear without the keys in the ignition or by pressing the brake pedal. Unfortunately, my car was knocked out of gear 2 days ago and rolled into the street. I contacted GM and they informed me that this is a normal occurrence. I then took my car to a local GM dealership and they were surprised to hear this. Despite this, GM still maintains that it is normal and that the Shift Lock Control System, which is a safety feature, is only active when the key is in the ignition. It's concerning that this safety feature doesn't work when the keys are not in the ignition. I understand that this may be a new development, but GM is telling me that there is nothing they can do. I just wanted to share this experience with you so that you can be aware that your car may come out of gear if bumped. Thank you for your time and attention.

Hi there! I have a Pontiac G6 GT hardtop convertible that has had a few issues. The transmission was repaired and then replaced, the exhaust system was replaced three times, and the water pump was also replaced. Additionally, the cable to XM needs to be replaced, the top grommets were replaced twice, and the key remote was replaced 13 times. I also had to replace the crossover gasket and coolant, as well as the rack-n-pinion and outer tie rod ends (which is why I was going through tires). Unfortunately, GM has not been very helpful and their customer service line (1-866-790-5700) just keeps you in a circle. If you have a proof number, like mine (#21124), they might be able to assist you better. Let me know if you have any questions!

I purchased this car for $33,000 and took it to a car wash just 5 days later. Unfortunately, water leaked all around the interior roof, soaking both the interior and myself. Despite contacting the dealer, they were unresponsive and did not offer any solutions. It is unacceptable for a car of this price to have such a significant issue, and I expect the dealer to take responsibility and provide a resolution.

I've had my Pontiac for almost two years now and I'm happy to say that I haven't had any issues with it. It runs really well, has plenty of power, and is a lot of fun to drive. I get an average of about 22 miles per gallon, which is pretty good considering it's a 3.5 liter 6 cylinder engine. Even with almost 95K miles on the clock, it still runs perfectly.

I have the base G6 Value Leader and bought it for $6,000 with 150,000 miles on it. I’ve had to replace a few parts, but they were all very cheap and easy to fix on my own. The car has been very reliable, and I haven't had any issues with oil consumption for over 150,000 miles. It drives very well and has held up nicely despite spending all its time in the midwest. I've driven many newer cars, but this G6 is still my favorite. It handles and corners very well, and has excellent acceleration. I was able to get 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds for a 4 cylinder, which is very impressive for a 16 year old car with a 2.4 liter engine. I absolutely love this car! It's fun to drive, practical, reliable, and affordable, all from an iconic American brand.

For under $30k, this car comes with all the options, including the bigger engine. It's worth comparing to other models like the Solara, Eos, or BMW, which were all considerations for me. The Pontiac salespeople are very eager to make a deal and offer these cars at invoice price, minus rebates. I particularly appreciate the 100,000 mile warranty. The car is zippy around town, quiet on the freeway, and there is plenty of room for two in the back seat. While I've had better cars, I've never had one for under $50k.

I got my G6 in January '07 and have loved it since. It's fun and easy to navigate. I think it's extremely roomy inside, especially in the backseat. Although, during one of our snowstorms in February, I slid into a snowbank at about 5 MPH, and it shattered my bumper and radiator. It was a bit disappointing, but I still think the car is great overall. I would highly recommend Pontiac to anyone I know!

Congratulations on your new car! It's great to hear that you are satisfied with your purchase. The vehicle's sporty design is perfect for a small family, and the interior is awesome, especially the chrome around the speedometer. The stereo system and message center are also very helpful. While the gas mileage could be better and the U-turns are a bit tight, the truck opening is adequate for your stroller and a few other items. Overall, it sounds like you got a very good deal on a car that meets your needs. Thank you for sharing your experience!

This seems like a great car! Although I'm usually a Mopar guy, the fact that this sedan has a V6/manual transmission is what sold me. While the gas mileage is a bit lower than expected (19.5 city), I'm hoping it will improve as the engine breaks in. The interior does scuff easily, but overall the car is comfortable, rides smoothly, and is fairly quiet. I wasn't too impressed with XM radio, my friend's Sirius seems much better. All in all, it's a pretty solid car!
