Pontiac G6 2008 problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac G6 is a mid-size car that was produced by General Motors under the Pontiac brand. It was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year to replace the Grand Am.

The G6 shared the GM Epsilon platform with the Chevrolet Malibu, Saab 9-3 and other General Motors vehicles. Features included a remote starting system (standard on GT, optional on base model), traction control/ABS, electronic stability control, automatic headlights as well as a panoramic sunroof option. A retractable hardtop convertible was offered for model years 2006-2009. Production ended in 2010 with the discontinuation of the Pontiac line.

With the G6, Pontiac introduced a two-digit naming convention, with the Pontiac G8 a class above the G6 and the Pontiac G5 a class below. In the case of the G6, the nameplate designated it as the sixth generation of its predecessor, the Pontiac Grand Am.

Common Pontiac G6 2008 problems

The 2008 Pontiac G6 is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners, which include power steering assist loss, gear shift cable malfunction, and electrical issues with interior accessories.

  • Power Steering Assist Loss: Power steering assist loss is one of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2008 Pontiac G6. This issue can result in a sudden loss of power steering assist, making it difficult to turn the steering wheel, especially at low speeds. The problem is often caused by a failure in the electric power steering system, which may require the replacement of the steering column.
  • Gear Shift Cable Malfunction: The gear shift cable malfunction is another common problem reported by owners of the 2008 Pontiac G6. This issue can cause the gear shift to become stuck in one position, making it impossible to change gears. The problem is often caused by a failure in the gear shift cable, which may require replacement.
  • Electrical Issues with Interior Accessories: Electrical issues with interior accessories are also common problems reported by owners of the 2008 Pontiac G6. These issues can include problems with the power windows, power locks, and other electrical accessories. The problem is often caused by a failure in the electrical system, which may require the replacement of the affected components.

Other problems reported by owners of the 2008 Pontiac G6 include steering issues, sputtering while accelerating, and computer failures. Steering issues are very widespread, showing up at around 55,000 miles, and are caused by the steering rack and shaft. Sputtering, while accelerating, is a common complaint from owners in the first 60,000 miles, and there are several sources, including solenoid and camshaft issues. Computer failures are also mentioned by owners at roughly 65,000 miles, and if the computer fails, the only way to solve the problem is by installing a new one.

The 2008 G6 has 5 recalls, with the most serious being for the electric power steering motor and steering transmission shift cable, which both increase the chances of an accident. A well-maintained 2008 G6 will last around 150,000 miles, which is about 100,000 miles less than a Mazda6. Regular annual maintenance costs are high for a midsize car, according to Repair Pal, at $445 per year.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-02
  • VIN: 1G2ZM577784
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: About 6 months ago I believe I file a complaint about this same issue and here I am again. A few nights ago driving home from the movies with my kids out of nowhere my headlights go out so I had to use my fog lights to make it home. I can't understand how isn't this a safety issue and why hasn't anyone done anything about it or why isn't there a recall. What is the wait? Are we waiting for a tragedy to occur to then do something?? This is like the 3 or 4th time that it has happened. Where is the urgency on this matter?? Or will I have to make a petition with other G6 owners that also have had this issue?? Some feedback would be nice on what to do or do I have to continue to spend $$$ with 0 results. Would appreciate some response and some results.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-09
  • VIN: 1G2ZF57B084
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The dashboard showed an error message regarding the power steering. I took it to my mechanic and they put it on the computer to scan. It came back with 2 error codes. The first one was DTC C0569 46. The second one was DTC C0460 00/4B. I was told the dealership would have to address the issue. They told me these codes were not covered by the recalled part they replaced. The car has approximately 81,500 miles. There doesn't appear to be a leak. At this time the steering is working. There is no stiffness or squealing. This first popped up on the screen about a month ago. I've been concerned about driving it until I know more.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
  • VIN: 1G2ZM577784
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: This has been an issue that has been going on for a few years it has mostly been the driver side headlight a d o. 2 occasions both headlights have not work. On November 2023 my headlights on the driver's side would not work. Also, my turn signal didn't work at all which almost caused me an accident as I was making a turn not knowing that the turn signal was not working. I took my vehicle to Alden Buick GMC where they did inform me of issues with the headlight wiring they replaced a few wires and used a zip tie to fix it. On another occasion leaving work none of my headlights worked so I had to call my wife and have her drive in front of me so that I can make it home. Now on December I was driving on the highway at 1am and all of a sudden my headlights went off so the only thing I could do is use my fog lights and follow a car in front of me. And now here we are once again driver side Not working. Now, everyone that has a Pontiac G6 knows, the issues with the headlights and the wiring. I just don't see why it hasn't been a recall on this continuous problem or even worst, Safty issue!!

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-17
  • VIN: 1G2ZF57B584
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Power steering is disabled while driving sometimes. In the past few weeks, right after starting the car, "POWER STEERING" will appear on the drivers information center, and the steering wheel will not turn unless using much more than normal force. Turning off and restarting the car eventually returns steering wheel to normal operation. Within the past few days the power steering has been disable while actively driving. Vehicle will start with no issues relating to power steering, but after a random time period while driving the "POWER STEERING" warning is displayed again. This has caused an immediate and unexpected return to fully manual steering while driving; much more force is needed to turn the steering wheel. This could be dangerous if in the middle of a turn power steering is disabled. Vehicle has not been inspected, yet.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-01
  • VIN: 1G2ZF57B784
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: On 08/05/2020, my car was serviced by our local GM dealership to have 3 open recalls fixed. They replaced my steering torque sensor and power steering assist motor due to the power steering going out at random. As of April 2022, I am once again having power steering issues. The steering wheel shakes back and forth, and occasionally will throw an error code and stop working. This requires me to pull over, shut the car off, and restart the car several times while manually moving the steering wheel to get it to work without throwing an error code. I used my own scan tool to diagnose the problem, and I'm getting a code "C0545-00 Steering Wheel Torque Input Sensor". This would be the same sensor that was supposedly replaced less than two years ago. I contacted the dealership, and they stated that they do not guarantee recall work, and that all services are performed "as-is". I contacted General Motors, and they want me to pay a $100 diagnostics fee to tell me what I already know, along with parts and labor for the repairs. The customer service representative rudely explained that the NHTSA is responsible for recall work (which doesn't sound right). Because this is a major safety concern, I don't feel that I should have to pay out of pocket considering this was already a recall that they were forced to address.

My safety and the safety of others around me was put at risk because I cannot easily turn the wheel and respond to a situation quickly if I needed to. I basically have to drive in a straight line and not turn. Turning the car on and off seems to help for a little while but the problem still continues. I have not taken the car to be looked at by anyone. The words "power steering" flashed across the radio. This first started to happen when the wheel started to lock up a few days ago. The vehicle has a separate issue were the seat belt monitor does not work for the drivers side. It dings even if I am buckled up.

Pontiac G6 2008 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the Pontiac G6 2008.

2014-07-21
  • Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.
  • Consequence: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will refund the purchase price or replace the steering shafts, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492.
2014-05-14
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
  • Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.
2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 29, 2014, that they are recalling 56,214 model year 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura vehicles. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.
  • Consequence: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the ‘PARK’ position, the transmission may not be in ‘PARK.’ If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and GM dealers will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14152.

In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
  • Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. Note: GM bulletin number 14119 will be implemented for model year 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 Chevrolet HHR (non-turbo) and model year 2003 Saturn ION to provide EPS Motor replacement for the life of the vehicle.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)
  • Summary: General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Saturn Aura and model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 vehicles, equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. On these vehicles, the tabs on the transmission shift cable end may fracture and separate.
  • Consequence: If the tabs were to fracture and separate, the shift lever and the actual position of the transmission gear may not match. The driver would be able to move the shifter to 'PARK' and remove the ignition key, but the transmission gear may not be in 'PARK.' The vehicle may not be able to be restarted and the vehicle could roll away after the driver has exited the vehicle, resulting in a possible crash without prior warning.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a retainer over the cable end or replace the shift cable as necessary. This service will be performed free of charge. Notification to owners began on on November 9, 2012. Owners were instructed to not bring their vehicles for repair until January 2013. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300.

Negative Pontiac G6 2008 car reviews

In my experience, I found that the convertible aspect of the car was not enough to make up for its other issues. While I did enjoy driving with the top down, the car had a tendency to pull to the right and the hardtop rattled when closed. Additionally, the brakes did not seem to be very effective and driving in the snow was a scary experience. However, this is just my personal opinion and others may have had a different experience. Ultimately, I decided to switch to an Eclipse and now feel much safer on the road. While the car is certainly cute, it was not worth the daily stress for me.

I bought my car brand new for $19,000 and paid cash. The first year was awesome, except for the radio replacement due to the buttons chipping. In the second year, I had to replace the serpentine belt and u-joints. Unfortunately, in the third year, I am getting the radio replaced AGAIN due to chipping. Additionally, the seats are fading, and I was told it was due to the mileage, which is only 30k. I have now involved GM, but they are only offering me a certificate for $4k off a new GM car. I cannot believe it! I have decided to switch to Ford and cannot wait until the radio is replaced so I can get a decent private sale or trade-in. It is quite disappointing that the dealer said the seats fade at 30k. I have decided to switch to Ford and will not be purchasing from GM again.

I bought this 08 G6 for my wife and unfortunately, we had a difficult experience with it from the time of purchase almost 2 years ago until we traded it in a few weeks ago. We experienced premature brake failure on rotors and pads at 6000 miles, and despite our efforts, Pontiac would not cover it under warranty. To make matters worse, the steering went out at 9,000 miles and we decided it was time to move on. In hindsight, I wish I had done more research on this car as brake problems and steering failures seem to be common issues with the G6, and unfortunately, GM has not taken any action to address them.

Choosing a car can be a tough decision, but I confidently chose this car over a Ford Mustang convertible because of its front wheel drive. Although the acceleration wasn't as impressive as the Mustang, I still loved the car in the beginning. The car looks great with the top down and even better with the top up. However, I did experience some issues with shifting and driving in the snow. Despite these challenges, I am confident in my decision to choose this car. I am currently having my transmission rebuilt, but I am still satisfied with my choice. While there have been some minor issues with the moldings around the seats and cup holders, I am still happy with my purchase. Overall, I stand by my decision to choose this car over the Ford Mustang.

To properly review this car, it's important to note the parts that have been replaced at 14000 miles, including the blower motor and windshield. There is a minor air leak when it's cold out, which caused some ice to form on the inside, but it melted after about 20 miles. Unfortunately, the sunvisors will not retain their position, but if you have an '08 G6, take it in for a replacement as they have stopped making the faulty ones. The brakes and rotors are in good condition. The door made a noise when stopping, but it was easily fixed with some grease. The engine ticks when it's cold, but I was told that this is normal for this model. The engine idles a bit rough, causing some shaking at stop lights, but again, this is a common issue. I will also highlight some of my favorite features...

This car has a low gas mileage and average head room, so it may not be the best choice for taller individuals. However, it looks great with the top up or down and I always receive compliments and head turns because it is a rare find. The sound system is fantastic and it is a fun car to drive. While getting in and out of the backseat can be difficult, this car is not meant for families or frequent group trips. With the top up, grocery shopping is easy, and surprisingly, the trunk space is quite good. Overall, this is a great convertible, and the hard top is perfect for those of us with cats. The only downside is that the trunk is heavy due to the roof lift mechanism, and it may eventually wear out and not stay up when lifted. A friend with the same car mentioned that it can be expensive to fix, but it's a small price to pay for such a great car.

I was thrilled when I saw the commercial for the 08 G6 GXP street edition. I knew I had to have one and just one week later, it was sitting in my garage. I am pleasantly surprised by all that it offers. The performance is fantastic, thanks to the 3.6vvt, six-speed automatic, and 2.77 gear ratio. It's quick off the line and cruises at less than 2000r's. The car feels very nimble when cornering and handles great in the snow. I find the seats to be very comfortable and all the controls are in the right place. Everywhere I go, someone comes up and asks, 'what is it?' In my opinion, Pontiac has definitely hit a home run with this car. It has great looks, style, performance (it's not a race car but a great commuter), and fuel mileage for the 21st century.

I'm really enjoying my 2008 Pontiac G6 convertible! It's been getting better mileage than I expected (32 MPG hwy/22 city) and it's just so fun to drive. I love seeing the admiring glances at the car. The acceleration is great, the ride is relatively quiet, and the on-command manual transmission, sound system, fit, and finish are all up to the most finicky standards for the price range. It's such a great value and I'm very happy with this car (I used to own a Buick LaCrosse CXL).

I purchased my 2008 G6 from a friend who had bought it brand new in 2008. It has been a great car for me, with 188k miles and counting. In the almost 9 years that I have owned it, I have only had to take it to the shop once for a bad radiator hose. After spending $200 on repairs, it is still running smoothly. Despite what some people say about Pontiac, I have had a wonderful experience with this car. Regular maintenance, such as oil changes, fluid checks, and tire rotations, have kept it in great condition. While it may not perform well in the rain, I have yet to test it in the snow. Overall, it is a super solid car with great gas mileage. In fact, I was able to drive from east Texas to western Pennsylvania on just two tanks of gas. The only downside is that G6s do not hold their value very well. However, I still love mine!
