2000 Plymouth Grand voyager problems
Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler. From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan, along with the Dodge Caravan. As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.
From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide.
The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).
The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

WHEN IT RAINS AND THE DRIVER GOES THROUGH WATER, THE VEHICLES SHUT THEMSELVES DOWN COMPLETELY. LIGHTS TURN OFF, POWER STEERING IS ARRESTED, AND THE DRIVER HAS TO COAST TO A STOP. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES TO MY PARENTS, AND MORE THAN ONCE, THEY HAVE HAD TO SECURE THE SERVICES OF A TOWING COMPANY TO GET THE VEHICLE(S) HOME OR TO A REPAIR SHOP. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT NIGHT ON TWO-LANE HIGHWAYS, LEAVING THEM STRANDED IN PITCH-BLACK DARKNESS. THESE ARE THE ONLY VEHICLES THAT MY PARENTS HAVE TO DRIVE TO AND FROM WORK, WHICH IS AN HOUR AND A HALF AWAY FROM HOME. MY FATHER HAS VISITED THE CHRYSLER-DODGE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES, AND THEY TOLD HIM THAT THIS IS A LARGE-SCALE PROBLEM WITH THESE PARTICULAR MODELS OF VANS. THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THE ISSUE, BUT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A FULL-SCALE RECALL ON THE VEHICLES. THERE IS A KIT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE KIT IS OVER $300, AND THE ONUS IS ON THE CONSUMER TO PURCHASE THE KIT AND HAVE IT INSTALLED. MY DAD SPENT OVER $700 TO HAVE THE KIT INSTALLED ON BOTH VANS. THE HEADRESTS HAVE BEEN TURNED AROUND BACKWARDS TO PREVENT SUCH AN OCCURRENCE, THOUGH THEY ARE NOW NOT ADJUSTABLE AND WILL ONLY PROVIDE HEAD/NECK SUPPORT TO A CHILD. MY VAN CONTAINS 4 OF THESE HEADRESTS. I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR 4 YEARS AND ALL OF THEM HAVE DETERIORATED DURING THIS TIME. *TR

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2000-03-14
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: MY 2000 CHRYSLER GRAND VOYAGER (3.0L ENGINE) HAS REPEATED ISSUE WITH LOSING ITS POWER STEERING BELT IN WET CONDITIONS (DRIVING THROUGH PUDDLES AS SHALLOW AS 2 INCHES). THIS MAKES THE VEHICLE BECOME DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. SINCE THIS HAPPENED TO ME TWICE IN ONE WEEK (AND I HAD JUST HAD THE SYSTEM INSPECTED AND A NEW BELT PUT ON BEFORE IT HAPPENED THE 2ND TIME) I CONTACTED SEVERAL LOCAL DEALERS AND ASKED IF THEY WERE AWARE OF AND HAD A SOLUTION FOR THIS ISSUE. ONE DEALER TOLD ME "STAY OUT OF PUDDLES." ALL THE DEALERS I CONTACTED SAID THIS WAS A "VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THE MODEL" AND THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY FIX FOR THE ISSUE. I SEARCHED ONLINE AND DISCOVERED THAT A LARGE NUMBER OF VANS FROM THE LATE 90S SHARE THIS DESIGN ISSUE. I ALSO FOUND SOME AFTERMARKET PRODUCTS THAT MAY FIX THE ISSUE. I FEEL STRONGLY THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD FIND A SOLUTION AND PROVIDE THIS SOLUTION AT THEIR DEALERS BEFORE THIS ISSUE CAUSES FURTHER BREAKDOWNS AND ACCIDENTS. IT IS LIKELY THAT MANY ACCIDENTS HAVE ALREADY RESULTED FROM A LOSS OF POWER STEERING RELATED TO THIS ISSUE, BUT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN LINKED TO THIS ISSUE BECAUSE: SPEEDS TEND TO BE LOWER IN WET CONDITIONS - ESPECIALLY WHEN GOING THROUGH PUDDLES. IF COLLIDING WITH FIXED OBJECT OFTEN DRIVER WOULDN'T REPORT IT TO AVOID TICKET & INSURANCE PREMIUM HIKES. ALSO, IF THE ACCIDENT IS REPORTED THEY MAY BLAME THE COLLISION OR BELT WEAR AS THE CAUSE FOR THE STEERING LOSS. *TR

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-10-23
- VIN: 1C4GJ44G9YB

NO INCIDENT HAS OCCURRED YET BUT THE POTENTIAL IS THERE. WE WOULD LIKE TO BRING ATTENTION TO THIS SO NHTSA CAN COMMUNICATE WITH THE DEALERSHIPS AND RESOLVE. MAYBE A RECALL SHOULD BE CONSIDERED? THIS IS POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS IF OWNERS ARE NOT AWARE OF THE SITUATION. IT ALSO IS A COSTLY REPAIR FOR AN ISSUE THAT SEEMS TO BE VERY COMMON IN THIS SPECIFIC VEHICLE 2000 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER. PLEASE HELP US RESOLVE. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-03-01
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: IN WET CONDITIONS, THE SERPENTINE BELT OF OUR 2000 CHRYSLER GRAND VOYAGER MINIVAN COMES OFF WITH NO WARNING. THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT AND UNPREDICTABLE (THOUGH ALWAYS WET). WHEN IT DOES SLIP OFF, THE DRIVER IS LEFT IN A DEADLY SITUATION AS ALL POWER STEERING IS LOST. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO US APPROXIMATELY 10 TIMES OVER THE PAST YEAR OR SO. WE'VE REPLACED THE BELT TWICE, THE PULLEY WHEEL, THE TENSIONER, AND THE MOTOR MOUNTS. WE'VE ALSO HAD A PLATE INSTALLED UNDER THE MOTOR TO TRY TO KEEP ROAD MOISTURE OFF OF THE BELT SYSTEM. I'VE NOW LEARNED THAT THIS IS SO COMMON A PROBLEM THAT THE GATES CORPORATION HAS MANUFACTURED A REPAIR/REPLACEMENT BELT SYSTEM FOR THESE VANS (WHICH I JUST PURCHASED). IT'S INTERESTING THAT THE GATES CORPORATION ACKNOWLEDGES THE PROBLEM, BUT THE CHRYSLER/DODGE COMPANY HASN'T ISSUED A RECALL OR OFFERED ANY TYPE OF RECOURSE FOR CUSTOMERS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE. WE'VE BEEN LUCKY SO FAR THAT NO ACCIDENTS OR INJURIES HAVE RESULTED. *TR
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-05-01
- VIN: 2P4GP44G4YR
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER. THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED, ALL OF THE GAUGE NEEDLES IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WOULD FLUCTUATE UP AND DOWN. THE DEALER SERVICED THE VEHICLE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 04V480000 (AIR BAGS). THE AIR BAG LIGHT DIMMED FOR SIX MONTHS, BUT THEN ILLUMINATED AGAIN. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE POWER DISTRIBUTOR FAILED AND THEY REPLACED THE PDC. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 105,000.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-05-26
- VIN: 2P4GP44G7YR
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: EVERYTIME IT RAINS AND I RUN OVER A PUDDLE, THE BELT COMES OFF AND THE VAN BECOMES NOT DRIVABLE. I CAN'T TURN THE WHEEL AND THE WARNING LIGHTS STARTS TO FLASH AND THE VAN GOES DEAD. I HAVE TO PAY $50 {NOT INCLUDING TOWING} TO GET IT FIXED EVERYTIME. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW IT ISN'T A DEFECT. IT WILL JUST STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET OR FREEWAY AFTER A FEW SECONDS. IT'S VERY COSTLY AND HOW COULD SOMETHING LIKE THIS BE OVERLOOKED? I GET SCARED EVERYTIME IT RAINS. *TR
STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-12-01
- VIN: 1P4GP44G5YB
- Components: STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: ON TWO OCCASIONS THE SERPENTINE BELT SLIPPED OFF THEIR PULLEYS WHILE DRIVING, WHICH LEFT MY CAR WITHOUT POWER STEERING, BRAKES, COOLING, A/C, OR ALTERNATOR. I HAD TO STOP AND HAVE THE CAR TOWED IN. DEALER COULD NOT PROVIDE A PREVENTATIVE REPAIR TO KEEP THE BELT FROM SLIPPING OFF AGAIN. FINALLY, GATES HAD A KIT IN FEB. 2007 THAT I HAD INSTALLED THAT IS SUPPOSED TO CURE THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS AN EPIDEMIC PROBLEM FOR THIS VEHICLE. *JB

You've been driving for 44 years and owned maybe a dozen cars. This one, however, is by far the best of all. With 210,000 miles on the van in 10 years, it's been tuned up only twice, the last time being 3 years ago. Just last week, it passed DEQ/EPA emissions testing with flying colors. Not one major component has ever failed up to this point, although it appears the starter may need to be replaced soon. You've driven 4,000 mile trips and enjoyed every minute of driving. On one trip in 2008, you drove 1070 miles in 17 hours in a single day, and a week later made the return trip in a single day. At no time were you uncomfortable or fatigued. Maybe you own the exception rather than the rule, but it's clear that you love it.
-
After owning the vehicle for three years and driving 47,000 miles, the Service Engine Soon light started to come on and off. I took it to the dealership, and the computer indicated that it was a Vapor Silonoid issue. After a quick fix that cost $150.00, I was on my way. However, when I got home, the Service Engine Soon light came back on. Unfortunately, this issue is not covered under the Chrysler Extended Warranty that I purchased. This vehicle has already been to the dealer for a variety of other problems, so if you are considering buying one, good luck. I have had bad experiences with American cars in the past, and I am disappointed once again. I will not be buying American cars in the future.
-
Your vehicle is really good and reliable for the most part. Unfortunately, the transmission went at 87,000 miles, which was a big disappointment. It cost $2,000 to fix, and the garage said that Mopar transmissions are not very good.
-
The 3.3l v6 is very responsive and gets pretty good mileage for a car this size. The seats are easily removed, although they can be a little heavy once out, they are still very comfortable. There is so much to love about this car!
-
Over the course of 5 years, we had to address several issues with the steering and alignment of our van. Despite having to get the front end aligned within the first month of ownership, we had to replace two sets of tires and tie rods, and undergo 5-6 alignments, all before reaching 60,000 miles. As a result, we have decided to part ways with the vehicle.

The thing I'm mainly concerned with is the area around the strut on drive front is rusted out on mine. The safety factor is a big concern as the hole is large and the strut can be seen from under the hood. I was wondering if there is a recall for this issue, as if mine is that way, there must be others also. Other than that, the van is fine.

I have owned this van since I got it new in 1999. If you're considering buying a used one, I would recommend being cautious. Overall, the van is reasonably solid, and the seats are heavy and mostly comfortable (way better than current stow-and-go). However, quality and reliability are a concern - the alignment went bad after about 80,000 miles and they've never been able to fix it right since. The front suspension on the driver's side is rusting through the body, and I've gone through two transmissions. Additionally, the A/C compressor blew at only 34,000 miles, and there have been many other expensive failures. If you can find one of these with low miles, it's a good van for long trips. While the city mileage is low, the highway mileage is not terrible.
