Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler. From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan, along with the Dodge Caravan. As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.

From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide.

The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).

The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

  • Summary: THIS LETTER IS REGARDING A MANUFACTURER DEFECT IN THE 2000 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER AND 2000 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY VANS. *BF THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLES IN WET WEATHER. WHEN IT RAINS AND THE DRIVER GOES THROUGH WATER, THE VEHICLES SHUT THEMSELVES DOWN COMPLETELY. LIGHTS TURN OFF, POWER STEERING IS ARRESTED, AND THE DRIVER HAS TO COAST TO A STOP. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES TO MY PARENTS, AND MORE THAN ONCE, THEY HAVE HAD TO SECURE THE SERVICES OF A TOWING COMPANY TO GET THE VEHICLE(S) HOME OR TO A REPAIR SHOP. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT NIGHT ON TWO-LANE HIGHWAYS, LEAVING THEM STRANDED IN PITCH-BLACK DARKNESS. THESE ARE THE ONLY VEHICLES THAT MY PARENTS HAVE TO DRIVE TO AND FROM WORK, WHICH IS AN HOUR AND A HALF AWAY FROM HOME. MY FATHER HAS VISITED THE CHRYSLER-DODGE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES, AND THEY TOLD HIM THAT THIS IS A LARGE-SCALE PROBLEM WITH THESE PARTICULAR MODELS OF VANS. THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THE ISSUE, BUT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A FULL-SCALE RECALL ON THE VEHICLES. THERE IS A KIT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE KIT IS OVER $300, AND THE ONUS IS ON THE CONSUMER TO PURCHASE THE KIT AND HAVE IT INSTALLED. MY DAD SPENT OVER $700 TO HAVE THE KIT INSTALLED ON BOTH VANS. THIS MANUFACTURER DEFECT IS DANGEROUS NOT ONLY TO THE DRIVERS OF THE VEHICLES, BUT TO OTHER MOTORISTS. PLEASE CONSIDER DOING A NATIONAL RECALL FOR THIS FACTORY DEFECT.

I was considering purchasing an SUV, but after comparing it to my Voyager, I realized that the van actually has more benefits. It gets better MPG, has more cargo space, can hold more people, and provides a better ride. Despite not having the same cool factor as an SUV, I ultimately decided to keep my Voyager because it offers more practicality and functionality.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager that I purchased back in 1999. At the time of purchase, it had 57,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I did experience some transmission problems within the first few weeks of owning it, which required a new transmission. Since then, I have taken good care of the vehicle, but it seems that it needs another transmission at 162,000 miles. I have also had to have the A/C fixed a few times, but unfortunately, it has quit again. Additionally, the body integrity has not been great. Despite these issues, I have enjoyed owning this vehicle and have had no problems with any other vehicles I have owned. However, I have decided not to purchase another Chrysler product. Thank you for listening to my experience!

You must have gotten one of the good ones! It's great to hear that you've had very little trouble with this van, even with 206,000 miles on it. The worst issues you've had were an air conditioner condenser leaking and an idler pully bearing, but other than that just routine maintenance like tires and brakes. It's impressive how much you can fit inside, and the driver side sliding door is a real plus. Plus, it's comfortable to drive and gets decent gas mileage for a van this size.

Our Voyager has 75,000 miles on it and is on its third transmission. Do you need to know anything else? Unfortunately, this vehicle has cost us over $4,000 in 2 years and has been quite a headache. We have had some issues with Chrysler's customer service, but we remain hopeful that they will be able to assist us. We are hesitant to purchase another American vehicle, but we will keep an open mind. Thank you for listening to our experience.

I recently purchased a van from a dodge dealership. Unfortunately, within 2 months of buying the car, I had to take it to a mechanic due to bad sway bar bushings. At 84,000 miles, the oil light came on and it turned out to be a bad oil pressure sensor. Then, at 88,000 miles, the valve guide fell out of the head, causing low compression in the number 2 combustion chamber. I had to have the head rebuilt for a total of $1000.00. Six months later, at 102,000 miles, the front main burst and it threw a connecting rod on an interstate merge in D.C. To make matters worse, there were numerous electrical problems to go along with the poor craftsmanship. I hope this information helps others make a more informed decision when purchasing a vehicle.

Your 1995 Plymouth Voyager sounds like a fantastic vehicle! With 130,000 miles, it has proven to be exceptionally reliable, running smoothly with no engine or mechanical problems. It's great to hear that it has been able to handle everything you've needed it to, from carrying soccer teams to moving your mother's antiques. And after 10 hours behind the wheel, it's wonderful that you find it so comfortable to drive. It's impressive that this is your third Chrysler mini-van, all of which have performed reliably up to 120K+. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

Our '96 Grand Voyager has had little problems. I'm glad to hear that you picked up an extended service contract from Chrysler when you bought it used. The only thing you had major work done on was the A/C, which is great. It sounds like it runs clean and smooth and has good mileage. Overall, it seems like you've had a positive experience with your vehicle!

I bought this van from a family member and had it shipped across the country by rail. It has had a rebuilt transmission, and I recently replaced it, making it the third transmission including the original. The van rides, drives, and looks like new, except for the peeling paint on the roof. All accessories work great, and it has never needed any major repairs, except for the transmissions. However, it will soon need new suspension to replace the original, new brakes that are three years old, and a new computer to address shifting issues with the new rebuilt transmission.

After owning the vehicle for three years and driving 47,000 miles, the Service Engine Soon light started to come on and off. I took it to the dealership, and the computer indicated that it was a Vapor Silonoid issue. After a quick fix that cost $150.00, I was on my way. However, when I got home, the Service Engine Soon light came back on. Unfortunately, this issue is not covered under the Chrysler Extended Warranty that I purchased. This vehicle has already been to the dealer for a variety of other problems, so if you are considering buying one, good luck. I have had bad experiences with American cars in the past, and I am disappointed once again. I will not be buying American cars in the future.

Your vehicle is really good and reliable for the most part. Unfortunately, the transmission went at 87,000 miles, which was a big disappointment. It cost $2,000 to fix, and the garage said that Mopar transmissions are not very good.
