Plymouth Grand voyager problems
Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler. From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan, along with the Dodge Caravan. As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.
From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide.
The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).
The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

- Summary: THIS LETTER IS REGARDING A MANUFACTURER DEFECT IN THE 2000 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER AND 2000 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY VANS. *BF THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLES IN WET WEATHER. WHEN IT RAINS AND THE DRIVER GOES THROUGH WATER, THE VEHICLES SHUT THEMSELVES DOWN COMPLETELY. LIGHTS TURN OFF, POWER STEERING IS ARRESTED, AND THE DRIVER HAS TO COAST TO A STOP. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES TO MY PARENTS, AND MORE THAN ONCE, THEY HAVE HAD TO SECURE THE SERVICES OF A TOWING COMPANY TO GET THE VEHICLE(S) HOME OR TO A REPAIR SHOP. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT NIGHT ON TWO-LANE HIGHWAYS, LEAVING THEM STRANDED IN PITCH-BLACK DARKNESS. THESE ARE THE ONLY VEHICLES THAT MY PARENTS HAVE TO DRIVE TO AND FROM WORK, WHICH IS AN HOUR AND A HALF AWAY FROM HOME. MY FATHER HAS VISITED THE CHRYSLER-DODGE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES, AND THEY TOLD HIM THAT THIS IS A LARGE-SCALE PROBLEM WITH THESE PARTICULAR MODELS OF VANS. THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THE ISSUE, BUT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A FULL-SCALE RECALL ON THE VEHICLES. THERE IS A KIT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE KIT IS OVER $300, AND THE ONUS IS ON THE CONSUMER TO PURCHASE THE KIT AND HAVE IT INSTALLED. MY DAD SPENT OVER $700 TO HAVE THE KIT INSTALLED ON BOTH VANS. THIS MANUFACTURER DEFECT IS DANGEROUS NOT ONLY TO THE DRIVERS OF THE VEHICLES, BUT TO OTHER MOTORISTS. PLEASE CONSIDER DOING A NATIONAL RECALL FOR THIS FACTORY DEFECT.

Vehicle year: 1993
This van has 179K miles on it and is still going strong! We've done some expected repairs and replacements, but nothing too extensive (the most expensive was a rebuilt transmission right after purchase). It's way more comfortable than the new minivans we've rented for a couple of trips. Although the heater takes a while to warm up, it's still a reliable ride for winter nights. The A/C only blows from the dash, so the back of the car can get pretty warm in summer, but it's still a great vehicle. We plan to keep driving it until it finally gives up!

Vehicle year: 1999
I thoroughly enjoyed this vehicle. Our family has owned several models, including the 86, 92, 96, and 99. The only issue we encountered was with the electronic module on the transmission.

Vehicle year: 1994
My v6 Voyager has 90,000+ miles and it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. I really appreciate all the travel accessories and the ride is excellent. The gas mileage is not as good as I would have liked, but it's not bad either. The only issue I've had is that it seems to go through tires quickly. So far, I haven't had any major repairs, just regular maintenance items.

Vehicle year: 2000
I purchased this vehicle in 2002 with 80,000 miles on the clock, and it has now clocked 180,000 miles. Despite the high mileage, all of the original parts are still in place. The only issue I have encountered is the need to replace the belt every three months.

Vehicle year: 1995
My grandparents bought the van brand new in 1994, when I was in 9th grade. I remember going with them to choose it. After my granny passed away in 2003, it was left to me in her will. However, my papa kept it for a few more years to help my disabled aunt until he could get a new truck. When I started my office job in 2008, my papa gave me the van since he no longer needed it. It had been a part of our family for 25 years, and I had it for 10 of those years. During that time, it took me on many camping trips and got me to where I needed to go. Unfortunately, last year it needed some major engine work, and I knew it was only a matter of time before I would have to let it go. I managed to get the necessary parts and found a mechanic to do the repairs, but after only three months, it started making loud noises. I had my brother-in-law take a look, and he thought it might be a blown rod or something in the engine. I called a friend who works for the Dodge dealership, and he confirmed that it was a bent or loose rod. I was devastated because the van, which my granny had named Charlie, had been a part of my life and family for so long. I tried my best to keep it running, but the cost of repairs was too much. The mechanic advised me to junk the van since it was worth less than $1000.Last Friday, I called a junk yard and, trying my best to hold back tears, arranged for a free tow of my van. The tow man arrived and loaded my beloved van onto the dolly tow. As it pulled away, I couldn't help but cry even more. Before saying goodbye to my friend and buddy Charlie, I started him up one last time and cleaned out my belongings. I hugged the steering wheel and bid farewell to my faithful companion. Although it was difficult, I knew I couldn't afford the repairs anymore. I kissed my hand and placed it on the windshield, saying goodbye once again. After driving around the parking lot one last time, I turned off the engine and signed the papers, handing over the title and keys to the tow guy. It was another hard parting. As the van was secured onto the dolly tow, I couldn't help but hear Charlie saying, 'Steven, don't do this to me. You need me and I need you.' I know it may sound strange, but when something as good as this mini-van is a huge part of your family for 25 years, it grows on you like a beloved pet that you have to put down. Although I have since gotten a new car, a 2002 Honda Accord, it will never replace Charlie. It was a Christmas and Birthday gift from my sister and her husband, and I gave them the money from the sale of Charlie. If you are looking for a good family mini-van, I highly recommend the Plymouth Grand Voyager SE. Charlie passed away just before Christmas last year at 157K miles. Thank you for the wonderful memories, Charlie. You were a great van.You got me places and you will be very much missed. I still miss you from time to time. When I see another mini van like you, I just cry and think of all the great times we had. Now you get to help somebody else that needs the good parts for their mini van. Time to pass it forward Charlie. RIP buddy. Your former owner, Steven G. Reynolds.

Vehicle year: 1993
We purchased this minivan second-hand, and it came with a warranty extension which turned out to be a wise decision. Although we experienced some issues with the transmission and air conditioning, we were able to have them repaired under warranty. We have noticed some wear and tear on the interior plastic molding, but it is easily fixable. The sliding door has come off its track a few times, but we were able to fix it without any major issues. Unfortunately, we did lose a favorite cassette when the Infinity cassette player stopped working. We have had some trouble with the driver seat recline mechanism, but we are working to resolve it. Overall, we have had some challenges with this minivan, but we are doing our best to address them.

It's great that you were able to take it for a test drive and everything seemed fine. However, after putting about 1800 miles on it, it seems like the transmission is having some issues. Specifically, there is a clunk and jerk when slowing down to 5 mph, and it feels like there may be a slip in the transmission when coming to a stop sign and then taking off.

The previous owner invested around $5000 in repairs to keep the van running, which included replacing two head gaskets, new tensioners, and a new timing belt. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the serpentine belt and transmission within the first month of owning the van. What should I do next? :(

This is a well-designed vehicle that provides great comfort. However, there have been some engineering design and manufacturing flaws that can be frustrating. Unfortunately, we had to replace our transmission at about 40,000 miles, which seems to be a common problem that Chrysler has yet to fix. Additionally, we experienced some issues with the paint peeling off the roof early on, and there was too much sealant that ran from the windows. We also had some minor issues with the clothes hooks, tape player, and front speakers, as well as the remote entry devices in the door. Despite these issues, I remain hopeful for Detroit's future against foreign competitors.

Hi there! I noticed that you had to replace the transmission twice, and that the brake system components may not be as reliable as you'd like. Additionally, you mentioned that the 3.3 Chrysler engine doesn't quite have the horsepower you need, and that the spare tire rack can't securely hold a full size tire. Lastly, I understand that the seats can be quite heavy and cumbersome to lift out if you need more room, and that the sound system could use an upgrade. Thanks for sharing your feedback with us!
