The Mercury Grand Marquis is an automobile that was produced by Mercury from the 1975 until 2011 model years. Introduced as the flagship sub-model of the Mercury Marquis in 1975, the Grand Marquis became a stand-alone model line in 1983, serving as the largest Mercury sedan. The model line served as the sedan counterpart of the Mercury Colony Park station wagon up to 1991. The fourth generation was the basis of the 2003 and 2004 Mercury Marauder.

From 1979 until 2011, the Grand Marquis shared the rear-wheel drive (RWD) Panther platform with the Ford LTD Crown Victoria (Ford Crown Victoria after 1992), and from 1980, the Lincoln Town Car. For over three decades, the Ford and Mercury sedans were functionally identical, with two of the three generations of the model line sharing the same roofline. The Grand Marquis was available as a four-door sedan for nearly its entire run; from 1988 to its final year in 2011, it was the only body style that was offered. A four-door hardtop was available from 1975 to 1978 and a two-door hardtop coupe from 1975 to 1987.

The Grand Marquis was the second-best-selling Mercury line (after the Cougar) with 2.7 million units produced; at 36 years of continuous production, the Grand Marquis was the longest-running Mercury nameplate (the Cougar, 34 years). Ford manufactured the Grand Marquis, alongside the Mercury Marquis, Mercury Marauder, Ford (LTD) Crown Victoria, and (beginning in 2007) the Lincoln Town Car, at two facilities: the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri (1979-1985) and the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Southwold, Ontario, Canada (1986-2011).

Ford announced the discontinuation of the Mercury brand in 2010, but a few 2011 model-year Mercurys were made. The last Grand Marquis - and the final Mercury branded car - was produced on January 4, 2011, at St. Thomas Assembly.

Common 2000 Mercury Grand marquis problems

The 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the electrical system, specifically the ignition switch. Owners have reported that the car suddenly turns off while driving, and the dashboard lights flicker or go out. This issue can be caused by a faulty ignition switch, which may need to be replaced.

Another common problem with the 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis is related to the steering system. Some owners have reported that the steering gear may fail, causing difficulty in steering the car. This issue can be dangerous, especially at high speeds, and may require a replacement of the steering gear.

The intake manifold and valve cover gaskets may also leak oil, causing a mess and potentially damaging other parts of the engine. This issue can be caused by wear and tear or by a manufacturing defect and may require a replacement of the affected gaskets.

The alternator may also get too hot, causing it to fail prematurely. This issue can be caused by a faulty alternator or by a problem with the car's electrical system. It is important to address this issue promptly, as a faulty alternator can cause the car to stall or fail to start.

In addition to these issues, some owners have reported problems with the transmission, engine, and fuel system. These issues can be serious and may require extensive repairs or replacement of parts.

It is important for owners of the 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis to be aware of these common problems and to address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicle. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these issues from occurring or becoming more serious.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-20
  • VIN: 2MEFM75W5YX
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I BELIEVE THIS ISSUE EFFECTS MILLIONS OF FORD AND MERCURY VEHICLES, MANY OF WHICH ARE TAXI, GOVERNMENT, AND POLICE CARS. APPARENTLY, THE COMPUTER (PCM) THAT CONTROLS THE ENGINE CAN SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS DRIVING WHEN CERTAIN SENSORS FAIL (AT LEAST 2 KNOWN SENSORS PER MY RESEARCH). I FOUND THIS OUT AT 65 MPH, 2 HOURS FROM HOME. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THERE ARE NO NEW PCMS MADE FOR MY 2000 CAR, AND THAT I HAD TO RELY ON A REBUILT AFTER MARKET PCM. THE AFTERMARKET SELLER RELATED THAT THESE COMPUTERS LAST APPROXIMATELY 10 YEARS. EVEN IF I REPLACE THIS PART, I BELIEVE THIS EFFECTIVELY MAKES MY (AND ANY SUCH) CAR A RISK TO DRIVE, AS MOST REBUILT AUTO PARTS ARE CREATED BY SIMPLY REPLACING ANY FAILED COMPONENTS OUT OF THE MANY COMPONENTS IN THE ASSEMBLY OF THE PART, AND LEAVING OTHERS STILL OLD AND WORN. WHEN WOULD THE OTHER PARTS FAIL, AND IF THE CAR IS OPERATING IS A HIGH RISK UNKNOWN. ON TOP OF THE FACT THAT THIS CREATES A SPECTACULAR HAZARD TO MOTORISTS, I DON'T THINK THAT'S FAIR TO CONSUMERS. I CAN DEMONSTRATE WHAT THIS CAR DOES, AND GO OVER THE OEM FACTORY MANUALS WHERE THEY CITE "REPLACE THE PCM". ALSO, WHY DO THESE SENSORS FAIL TO A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION, HAVE NO LOGIC CHECK (SUCH AS TESTING OTHER SENSORS TO SEE IF THEY CONCUR BEFORE AN ENGINE SHUT DOWN) AND WHY CAN'T THEY BE DISCONNECTED TO ALLOW THE ENGINE TO KEEP WORKING TILL YOU CAN GET TO THE REPAIR?
