2013 Subaru Outback problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different SUV-themed vehicles: a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, the Outback (1994–present, also sold as Legacy Outback (Japanese: スバル・レガシィアウトバック, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi Autobakku) in some markets), and an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994–2011).

Most versions of the Outback wagon and Outback Sport have had all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

History

The original Outback station wagon was derived from the wagon variant of the second-generation Subaru Legacy. The first-generation Legacy, which made its debut in 1989, did not receive the cosmetic and suspension modifications to create an Outback version, although Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which added a compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.

Earlier, a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant had been offered on the preceding Subaru Leone for the 1988 and 1989 model years. Subaru also sold a raised-roof variant (chassis code BF) of the first-generation Legacy wagon outside the United States. North American Legacy wagons were only offered as the flat-roof variant (chassis code BJ) until a special "GT" model was marketed for the 1994 model year.

The second-generation Legacy wagon became the first generation of the Outback crossover series, called the "Legacy Grand Wagon" in Japan in 1995, and the "Legacy Outback" in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the "Outback" variant added partial protective plastic side body cladding for off-road conditions, used a raised roof, and would later raise the suspension to provide additional ground clearance. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.

When launched in Australia in 1996, the name "Legacy Outback" was shortened to "Outback", followed in other markets afterwards. In the United States, Subaru also retailed the Legacy SUS sedan between the 1997 and 2007 model years, with similar modifications to distinguish it from the equivalent Legacy model sedan. The Impreza Outback Sport was introduced at the 1996 New York Auto Show, but for the 1997 model year, the donor model names were dropped, and the cars were known as the "Outback" and "Outback Sport".

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-20
  • VIN: 4S4BRCKC2D3
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: We bought this around June 2018 with ~96,000 miles. I change oil every 6 months or 6,000 miles with OEM filters and Mobil 1 0w-30 oil. This car has burned 1/2 to 3/4 of oil initially. After 140,000 miles it climbed to over 1 1/2 quarts between changes. I had repeated O2 sensor codes and sensor replacements and finally catalytic converter codes. Replaced the converter around 160,000 miles. I took off the intake manifold after seeing excessive oil deposits under the throttle body. There's was over 1/8" of caked oil inside the manifold and butterfly valves. I'm very confused as to why the class action lawsuit didn't cover my Serial number. I checked this before buying the car and incorrectly assumed all the affected cars were included in the recall/repair process.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
  • VIN: 4S4BRBKC0D3
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: * I detected a noise in the front end and an instability in the handling. My independent service mechanic found the cradle on the right front severely rusted out at the point where the control arm attaches. He had to condemn the vehicle. * My mechanic says that it could have resulted in a total loss of ability to steer. He says that he is unable to order the part from the manufacturer because so many are on back order. He is also unable to find any used ones. Finally, he says that in the last 3 months he has had to condemn 3 other Outbacks due to the same problem. THIS SOUNDS LIKE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE TO ME. *Problem confirmed by my independent service center *No *No

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-09
  • VIN: 4S4BRBACXD3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I was driving on a highway when my car started to suddenly stutter, hesitate, and jerk after about an hour on the road. I pulled over on the shoulder immediately and tried to better position the car further off the highway with the same vehicle behavior. Initially I thought a tire had blown so sudden was the impact but after exterior inspection I realized the tires were fine and the problem was probably under the hood. The CVT transmission and TCM malfunctioned, and electric parking brake engaged creating a noise. My ability to steer the vehicle in a predictable direction was gone creating a safety hazard on the highway or any road. The car had to be long-distance towed back to where I live; it could not be safely driven. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by two independent service centers, one a general service center and the other a foreign car expert service center. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone else. There were dashboard warning lights that came on at the time the vehicle started to shake. The lights were the vehicle dynamics control warning light and the check engine warning light. A " boat load" of transmission codes that lead to the vehicle being assessed at the foreign car service center. I am asking for Subaru’s assistance in resolving this matter. I purchased a Subaru based on recommendations from other family members and their experience of having multiple Subaru vehicles some of which lasted 300,00 miles. If this is a manufacturing problem I believe that Subaru has a responsibility to notify their owners of the potential problem (which didn’t happen in my case) and a responsibility to resolve the problem when it occurs. I took my vehicle into my nearest Subaru dealership for a warranty repair that I was notified of approx. three years ago. No one notified me of the potential CVT transmission problem at that time. My vehicle cannot be driven in its current state and it is dangerous to drive because of this problem.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-02
  • VIN: 4S4BRBKCXD3
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: Electronic seat recliner motor (outer bushing) noise when reclining, but Kendall Subaru in Eugene saying motor can not be fixed (defective design), only replaced with another (defective) motor @ cost near $1,000. Seat then stuck all the way back; even with seat headrest behind my back (w/sweaters on top of it even) driving comfort/visibility are not as good. [This entire electronic seat recliner motor system is inferior/defective to begin with vs. a typical manual seat reclining lever design, for at least the following reasons: 1) much slower/less easy to operate 2) plastic activation buttons easily break off 3) much less reliable, where manual lever system safety & other problems are almost unheard of 4) much more costly].

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-15
  • VIN: 4S4BRCKC8D3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: At all speeds vehicle shudders when letting off accelerator then nearly stalls. This is extremely dangerous when entering expressways or crossing oncoming vehicles. Dealer identified transmission as the problem and could reproduce, but not determine reason. Said drive until Check Engine light comes on then bring back. Light has never lit up. Dealer says Subaru stopped using this transmission because of problems, but is not allowed to rebuild or repair transmission. Says it cannot get new or rebuilt transmission from Subaru or anyone else just from totaled car auction. Dealership is offering $2500 trade in. This problem is well documented online regarding 2013 Subaru Outback’s with 2.5L engine.

AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-10
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 4S4BRBCC0D3
  • Components: AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was pulling into a parking space very slowly when the car went into overdrive and suddenly accelerated at a high speed. It plunged down a slight decline and hit a large tree. My airbag failed to deploy although I was thrown violently forward, and the car sustained severe front end damage. The car is considered a total loss and I spent a day at a hospital emergency room. The sudden unexpected acceleration and the lack of airbag inflation is going to be assessed by Subaru on 10/24/23. I understand that there are two class action lawsuits against Subaru (in NJ & CA) for this same unanticipated acceleration issue.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-08
  • VIN: 4S4BRDAC0D2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Over time, brake pedal travel has increased and brakes have a ‘soft’ or ‘mushy’ feel. Unable to ‘lock up’ the brakes, and can frequently hit the end of travel on the brakes. Cannot stop quickly. Rotors, pads and calipers have been replaced and passed state inspection, but still unable to stop quickly in an emergency situation.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 4S4BRDPC9D2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? ACTUATOR ASSY-EPB, part number 26002aj02c (from technical service bulletin), part is not available How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Brake light and iSight warning light comes on. Safety systems will not operate properly when these lights are on Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Brake light and iSight warning light comes on, this started several months ago After driving this car for about an hour, shutting it off then starting it back up after short amount of time, like 20 minutes, the brake warning light and iSight light (safety system/adaptive cruise control/automatic braking) will come on immediately, they will stay on until the car has been allowed to cool down for several hours. This happens more often in hot weather. This has happened about a couple dozen times already. Took the car to Eurasian Autoworks in Tilton NH, the mechanic, who i'm told is a former Subaru master tech says this is a common problem and is usually fixed by replacing the emergency brake actuator under Technical Service Bulletin 06-58-17R. I called the local dealership and they do not have any of these parts available. I called Subaru customer support, case number [XXX] . and was told the part is discontinued and essentially said I should get one from a junkyard. I do not believe a 10 year old car should have safety related parts unavailable, especially on a common issue with this year/model of car. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
  • VIN: 4S4BRCCCXD3
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I had 2 dealerships look at my vehicle and both gave me an answer that is blowing me off. As now I have seen it’s a major issue with a lot of people. Oil consumption progressively increased until it was 2 burning 2 quarts of oil for every fill up. That’s ridiculous especially when I was very religious about taking care of my vehicle. I cannot understand how a manufacturer can get away with not issuing a recall to fix their major known problem. It took me awhile to complain and the vehicle has been sitting for awhile now. It only has 145,000 miles on it. I bought a Subaru with taking care of it, keeping up with maintenance and it should have lasted in my opinion at least 200,000 miles. When you pay good money for a product and take care of it you certainly hope it lasts longer than it did. I hope others complain enough that they are forced to do something about it. I am not going to hold my breath. I am sure will not be made to take care of their issues. Know this, I’ll NEVER waste my money on another subraru EVER again! Thanks for letting me vent.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-11
  • VIN: 4S4BRCCC4D3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Like many other Subaru Outback owners, the torque converter, valve body tied to the transmission has put my Subaru out of commission at only 127k miles. There are many listservs and threads of Subaru owners who were duped by Subarus marketing of Subarus lasting into 200k miles who only reached half that because of these faulty transmissions and like myself have experienced car shuttering, stalling, and having to tow and chunk their allegedly safe cars that died half into their marketed lifespan. These cars are unsafe, have left my stranded and needing a tow and with many costly repairs https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/Discussion-t37876_ds770713

  • VIN: 4S4BRDKCXD2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The electronic parking brake warning light keeps flashing indicating a failure in the off-on mechanism. The brake could go on while the car is in motion, causing loss of control. Or the brake could fail while in park, and the car could roll. Subaru mechanic has been telling me they are waiting for a part, which is on back order nationwide. This has been going on with my car for months, literally. I deal with Subaru of Rockville, MD, (240)903-9338.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-31
  • VIN: 4S4BRBPC1D3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: The hood latch released while I driving on the 101 freeway at about 70 MPH. The secondary lock held and I was able to get off the freeway. The hood would not latch after this occurred. I took the vehicle to Kirby Subaru of Ventura and had the latch replaced. I am from a medical background, where we have certain "never" events. I would consider this to be one of those never events. If the secondary latch had failed I likely would have had a catastrophic event.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-01
  • VIN: 4S4BRBKC5D3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My horn became intermittent, and stopped working. The car will not pass state inspection. It was diagnosed as a faulty clock spring. The dealership stated that this was a common failure on Subaru's, especially those that had the Takata airbag replacement recall. They said there was no TSB or recall for the part. I reached out to Subaru customer service who said that due to the age and mileage on my car, there was nothing they could do to assist replacing the part.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-22
  • VIN: 4S4BRBKC8D3
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: I experienced a sudden unintended acceleration of my 2013 Subaru Outback while braking to make a left hand turn at a stoplight on Federal Road in Brookfield, CT. I was able to squeeze the brake hard while shifting into neutral to avoid slamming into the car in front of me while the engine raced. The car would have gone out of control had I not been able to press very hard on the brake pedal. This incident was not the first time this unintended acceleration of the vehicle occurred. About a month ago, I was in a similar situation on the road when I was decelerating and applying the brake that the car had a rapid unintended acceleration that caused me to press very hard on the brake pedal to keep the car from lurching forward. I’ve owned the vehicle since December 2012 and this situation has probably occurred less than 5 times over the 10 years of operation. Each time I thought it was perhaps my error for somehow touching the accelerator with my foot while the brake was applied. After the recent November 22 incident, I now realize that there is likely a systemic problem with the accelerator. I plan to have accelerator inspected by the dealer.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-07
  • VIN: 4s4brbccxd3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Driving back to work, the seat belt alarm started chiming. I noticed the airbag light was on for the passenger side along with this chime. Looking it up, I see recalls for the ODS system in later years than my vehicle, but not yet for the year of mine. No incident occurred.

  • Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.

  • Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
  • Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
  • Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Legacy vehicles manufactured November 26, 2008, to June 7, 2013, and 2010-2014 Outback vehicles manufactured January 9, 2009 to June 7, 2013. Due to contamination, components within the windshield wiper motor bottom cover may interfere with each other. If an obstruction, such as a buildup of snow or ice prevents the wiper arms from being able to stop in the parked position, the wiper motor may overheat and the bottom cover may melt.
  • Consequence: If the windshield wiper motor overheats, the wipers may fail, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, the wiper motor cover may melt, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace the windshield wiper motor bottom cover assembly, free of charge. The recall began October 2016. • Consequence: The engine may inadvertently start and run for up to fifteen minutes. The engine may continue to start and stop until the fob battery is depleted, or until the vehicle runs out of fuel. Negative 2013 Subaru Outback car reviews

  1. Gaetano Jacobi 2024-11-11

I needed another transmission at 71 thousand miles. Unfortunately, the A/C is not cold enough when it's hot out and the heater is not hot enough when it's cold out. Additionally, I seem to go through too many headlights and tail lights. While I started out getting 31 miles per gallon, now I only get 25 tops on the highway. In 2013, there were some factory engine and transmission problems, but the manufacturer would fix them for free if you had any issues. Lastly, I found that when I tilted my steering wheel to my comfortable level, it blocked the speedometer. Despite these issues, I still really wanted this SUV.

  2. Ryann Smitham 2024-10-14

Subaru has a great idea with their AWD feature and high ground clearance. The gas mileage is good and the sound system is great. The interior and appointments are also very nice. However, the car's heavy steering and tendency to wander can add to fatigue during long trips. Additionally, some customers have reported excessive oil consumption between oil changes, which can be frustrating. While it's important to note that there is a lawsuit pending regarding this issue, it's still a great car overall. We hope that Subaru will address this issue soon. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Lennie Hettinger 2024-09-20

Although my experience with my Subaru Outback has been disappointing due to a transmission failure at 83,000 miles, I am confident in my decision to seek alternative options for repair. Despite the power train warranty only covering 60,000 miles, I have taken the initiative to find a used replacement online. While Subaru of America offered a goodwill gesture of $1,000 towards the repair, I have decided to pursue a different course of action. I remain confident in my ability to find a solution that meets my needs and look forward to continuing to drive my Subaru Outback.

  4. Fredy Renner 2024-09-11

I appreciate my Subaru car, but I am disappointed that it burns oil and Subaru seems to be aware of the issue but is not taking responsibility for it. During an oil consumption test conducted by my local Subaru Service department, it was found that 1 quart of oil was consumed in just 1,529 miles on our 2014 Outback with only 9,253 miles on the odometer. Although the local Service Department claims that they did not conduct the test correctly, I personally checked the dipstick before taking it in and found that it was 1 quart low at 1,520 miles. According to the oil consumption test, 1/3 quart in 1,200 miles is out of specification. When I contacted SOA, I was advised to go back to the dealer. I believe that Subaru should stand behind their product and take responsibility for this issue. I urge Subaru to read the lawsuit against them and take appropriate action.

  5. Carlos Reinger 2024-08-09

I love my car, but unfortunately the fuel mileage has been a bit of a disappointment. After 25,000 miles, it dropped about 5mpg both in the city and on the highway. It became unpredictable and I wasn't sure what to expect. Most of the time, I was getting around 23mpg in the city and 27mpg on the highway. However, I did manage to get the best city mileage of 26mpg and highway mileage of 34mpg. Over the last 5000 miles, I averaged 23.2mpg. Fortunately, after reaching 59000 miles, the fuel mileage is back to 26mpg in the city and 30mpg on the highway, sometimes even reaching 34mpg on the highway. I can't explain why it dropped for a year, but I'm glad it's back. Even though I've had the motor rebuilt three times in 15,000 miles, I still like my car and I'm happy that the last motor seems to be lasting. I did find that I get better fuel mileage on the highway when I drive below 68 or above 74, which is interesting. I took a 3500 mile vacation in May and averaged 28.8mpg, even though I did a lot of 80+ driving. Unfortunately, the gas mileage has been doing very poorly lately, at 22mpg in the city and 26.5mpg on the highway. I think I'm done with this car.

Positive 2013 Subaru Outback car reviews

  1. Myrl Goldner 2024-11-10

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Outback! It sounds like it's been a great investment for you, especially with its impressive value and resale. It's also great to hear that it runs on regular fuel, which is a nice cost-saving feature. It's always tough to choose between different car brands, but it sounds like the Outback has really won you over. And with the added bonus of being $15K cheaper than a comparable Volvo wagon, it's definitely a smart choice. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

  2. Ansley Beahan 2024-10-25

Congratulations on your new 2013 Subaru Outback! It's great to hear that your previous 2000 Subaru Legacy/Outback held up so well for 12 years. It's always impressive when a car can last that long. It sounds like you made a wise decision in replacing your 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser and 2008 Ford Edge SEL with the Outback. With its AWD, the Outback is a competent and safe car, and it's great to hear that you're getting a solid 24.3 mpg in city driving. Additionally, the car is exceptionally quiet, making for a peaceful driving experience. Enjoy your new car and happy driving!

  3. Clair Stracke 2024-09-13

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2013 3.6 with the special appearance package! It sounds like it's a pleasure to drive, especially with the paddle shifters. As your first Subaru, it's great to hear that you're impressed with the fit and finish. The interior space seems to be more than enough for you and your wife, and it's easy to get in and out of. It's also reassuring to hear that the car feels incredibly solid. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  4. Elmer Schulist 2024-09-08

I recently traded in my BMW sport car, which was frequently in the shop, for a great Outback. I chose this car for obvious outdoor activities as well as a daily driver. The car handles well around sharp curves, although there are a couple of minor quirks with the audio system and ignition keys. Despite this, I find the car fun to drive and impressive off-road. It handles bumps and potholes flawlessly. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase!

  5. Candelario Wilderman 2024-09-07

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you recently purchased a car in July 2013. Even though you weren't initially planning on buying a new car, you found one on the lot for 4k off sticker and decided to go for it. That's great news! It sounds like you made a fantastic choice. The car is incredibly sturdy, useful, and easy to drive. I'm glad to hear that it came with a manual, which was important to you. Additionally, the backseats are much more comfortable than any SUV you've been in, and there's lots of space in the back too. With the first snow of the season hitting, I'm thrilled to hear that you're pleased with how the car handles. It's just phenomenal in the snow, especially with a manual transmission. The only thing you have to worry about is the cars around you. Overall, it sounds like you made a great purchase and I hope you continue to enjoy your new car!
