2017 Ford Ranger problems

ford logo

The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.

Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.

For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.

The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

Common 2017 Ford Ranger problems

The Ford Ranger is a popular pickup truck, but like any vehicle, it can have common problems that affect its reliability and performance. Here are some of the commonly reported issues with the Ford Ranger, based on complaints from owners:

Ford Ranger Transmission Problems

The most widely reported problem with the Ford Ranger is with the model's transmission system. Many drivers of the Ford Ranger have noted issues with the automatic transmission, with problems being so prevalent that a number of recalls on the model have been announced on both older and newer models. Some of the symptoms of this problem include transmission fluid leaks, problems in changing gears, a slipping or dragging clutch, and a burning smell in your car. If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, it’s likely that you’re having problems with your Ford Ranger’s transmission. With the help of a trained mechanic, they will be able to diagnose the exact fault with your transmission system and repair it for you. The average quote for an automatic transmission diagnostic on the Ford Ranger is £127.79 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.

Ford Ranger Engine Problems

Some drivers have also experienced problems with the engine on their Ford Ranger. It can be difficult to diagnose the exact problem with your car's engine by yourself, as many of the symptoms of different engine problems can be very similar. These symptoms commonly include the check engine light illuminating, a smoking exhaust, frequent overheating, and decreased fuel economy just to name a few. That’s why it’s crucial that you get the fault checked out by a specialist as soon as possible. The average quote for an engine repair on the Ford Ranger is £347.08 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.

Ford Ranger Fuel Injector Problems

Another commonly reported problem drivers have experienced with the Ford Ranger is with the model’s fuel injector. The most common symptoms of a faulty fuel injector are a misfiring engine, the check engine light illuminating, and rough idling. These problems are most commonly caused by your fuel injector becoming clogged or dirty, and the symptoms can feel very similar to those of a faulty fuel pump or fuel filter. That’s why it’s so important that a trained specialist checks out your car for you to diagnose the problem correctly. Luckily if you do have this problem, a fuel injector replacement is relatively inexpensive. The average quote for a fuel injector replacement on the Ford Ranger is £168.56 when booked with WhoCanFixMyCar.

Ford Ranger Oil Pump Problems

Owners of Ford Rangers commonly encounter issues related to the oil pump. Whether it’s an audible rattle or the oil pressure light coming on, it’s usually caused by deteriorating or poor parts used in this component. Depending on which component in your oil pump is creating the issue, you may require replacement parts to avoid any further engine issues.

Ford Ranger Turbocharger Failure

Ford Ranger owners have reported turbocharger failure and damage to the crankshaft. Whether you’re noticing a significant drop in the fuel economy of your vehicle or hearing unusual noises coming from your engine, it’s worth checking out some of these common faults as replacement parts could be required.

Ford Ranger MAF Sensor Issues

Some of the common symptoms when you’ve got a MAF sensor (mass airflow sensor) issue can be similar to those listed above for faulty fuel injectors. The sensor on your Ford Ranger could be defective, but it may simply be that it is too dirty to detect air levels properly, meaning that cleaning it could restore normality.

Ford Ranger SCR System Failure

The Ford Ranger’s SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, which helps reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOx) that the engine emits, has been reported to fail on Euro-6 models (built from 2016 onwards). This fault causes increased AdBlue consumption and is signalled via the engine management light.

Ford Ranger Transmission Fluid Leaks

Both automatic and manual transmission Ford Rangers have shown issues, sometimes leading to recalls. Any slipping or dragging is a clear sign of a potential transmission issue, and you should also be wary of any burning smells while driving. Concerns over your transmission should be dealt with swiftly by replacing any faulty parts.

Ford Ranger Steering Noise

The steering noise could be a worn joint, again, have a dealer check it. It’s not a problem that has come to our attention.

Ford Ranger Chassis Rust

If you notice your engine light coming on, an unsteady idling or find your engine misfires at times, you probably have fuel injector issues. This has been noted as a common problem for some Ford Rangers, with the cause often being a dirty or clogged filter. However, if your fuel injector is faulty, it will require a replacement to restore proper working order.

Ford Ranger Light Problems

The problem with the lights could be a timer issue, have it checked by a dealer.

Ford Ranger Suspension Upgrade

If you have other owners with similar concerns you could try getting together and approaching Ford as a group. Other than that I would suggest you go to a suspension specialist and look at having you suspension upgraded.

Ford Ranger Differential Marks

Cars have all sorts of marks on them from production, they usually indicate a check has been done along the way. It will have some affect on the speedo – I estimate about 2 per cent – and it will have an affect on the speeds in each ratio. I would recommend you talk to your tyre retailer to determine that full affect of the change.

These are some of the most commonly reported problems with the Ford Ranger, based on complaints from owners. While some of these issues can be relatively minor and easily fixed, others can be more serious and require extensive repairs or replacement parts. It's important to be aware of these problems and to address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of your vehicle.
