The Jaguar E-Pace (X540) is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV (C-segment in Europe) produced by the British car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) under their Jaguar marque. It was officially revealed on 13 July 2017 and was the second production Jaguar SUV.

The car is built in Graz, Austria, by Magna Steyr and from 2018 by Chery Jaguar Land Rover, JLR's joint venture with partner Chery, in Changshu, China.

Overview

Designed under the direction of Jaguar chief designer Ian Callum, the vehicle uses the JLR PTA platform, as used by the second incarnation of Range Rover Evoque and the second incarnation of Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The car has a transverse front engine and is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.

Stunt driver Terry Grant performed a world record barrel roll jump in the car for the reveal which took place at the London ExCel centre. The car did a 270 degree barrel roll and travelled 50 feet (15.3 metres) through the air.

Common 2020 Jaguar E-pace problems

The 2020 Jaguar E-Pace has been reported to have several common problems by its owners, primarily related to electrical and computer issues, as well as engine and transmission concerns.

  • Engine Transmission Alert: Some owners have reported that the Engine Transmission Alert comes on and does not turn off, which could be due to an emissions issue.
  • Engine Loses Power: A significant concern for some E-Pace owners is the engine losing power, both on the freeway and in the city, making it difficult to accelerate and maintain speeds above 30-35 mph.
  • Electrical and Computer Issues: Several owners have reported various electrical and computer-related problems, such as the navigation screen going blank, Apple CarPlay crashing frequently, and touch unlock on the outer door not working consistently. These issues can be frustrating and may require professional assistance to resolve.
  • Other Issues: Some owners have reported finding loose bolts in the inner door pocket, a small trunk that cannot fit 5 bags of groceries, and front 12V power on the dash not powering off with the vehicle. These issues may not be as significant as the engine and transmission problems but can still affect the overall driving experience.

In addition to these owner-reported issues, the 2020 Jaguar E-Pace has also faced some common faults related to its engine and exhaust system. The 2.0L diesel Ingenium engine, used across the Jaguar Land Rover range, is known to have timing chain issues, which can cause engine failure if not addressed.

Jaguar, as a brand, has historically ranked low in reliability surveys, with the E-Pace itself ranking towards the bottom of the survey's family SUV category.

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-23
  • VIN: SADFT2GX2L1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine coolant light is on consistently. I had to start taking pictures. I was told by a service advisor that a recall was just done on the E-Pace. Yet I have never received any documentation at all. This issue has been going on since 2020. The car cabin has filled with fumes, several times while driving. I had to start taking pictures., because AutoNation Jagur/Land Rover Southbay declined to give me documentation for all of the times I came in for a TOPOFF. I could not download all of the repair orders, and manufacturer correspondence. Thank you for looking into this matter.

Negative 2020 Jaguar E-pace car reviews

  1. D'angelo Dooley 2025-07-21

Jaguar's E-Pace has some serious issues that need to be addressed. The engine power loss and limp home mode are well-known defects that Jaguar has attempted to fix with a software patch. However, this patch has caused further issues with the start/stop function and the synchronization between the engine and transmission. The lack of Apple or Android connectivity and poor voice recognition are also major drawbacks. It is important for Jaguar to take responsibility for these issues and work towards a solution that will satisfy their customers. Potential buyers should be aware of these problems before making a purchase decision.

I purchased this car as an alternative to the Volvo XC40 I wanted to order, which was far out on production. Although it was almost $10,000 more, I thought it would be a good option. However, I found the tech to be extremely lacking and the interior to be simple, similar to my Chevy Cruze rs. Unfortunately, the car has had transmission issues twice, leaving me stranded on the road. When I was asked to review the car by Jaguar, my review was taken down. If you are considering purchasing this car, please be cautious.

  3. Wade Casper 2025-06-19

I purchased this car based on its captivating appearance, without reading any reviews. Although there have been some issues, such as the engine fan sound resembling a Moulinex juicer, wrinkling of the leather seats, and the need for a transmission replacement, the gear kicks on acceleration and deceleration are better than Roberto Carlos. Additionally, the air conditioning fan changes speed on its own. Despite some challenges with customer service and mechanics, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the right expertise and attention.

Although I am disappointed with my first luxury car, I have learned a valuable lesson about researching reviews before making a purchase. Unfortunately, my vehicle has required multiple repairs, including a brake job and alignment, despite only having 12000 miles. However, I am confident that these issues will be resolved and I am hopeful for a better experience in the future. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hi! I noticed that you recently purchased a 2019 2 ltr petrol e pace. I wanted to let you know that I've had some trouble with the boot lid opening when I put my foot under the rear end. It seems to be hit and miss, and I'm wondering if you've experienced the same thing. Also, I've had some trouble with the finger locking. Have you had any issues with that as well?

Positive 2020 Jaguar E-pace car reviews

Pros: This SUV has stunning looks and style, and is well laid out with a comfortable sporty cockpit. It has good driver visibility, brilliant performance technology, great features, and a smooth shifting nine-speed transmission. The vehicle is quite nimble with precise steering, super stable braking, and great cornering & windy conditions stability. It also has an excellent surround camera system and brilliant adaptive cruise control, as well as unbelievable self parking. The interior fit and finish is good, and it has great storage capability considering its size. Cons: The vehicle is a little expensive and has a feathery overly sensitive accelerator (spurts), as well as a 1 second transmission kick down delay. The touchscreen display can be washed out and the metalized windshield blocks radio frequencies. There are a few other minor issues listed under “Details of Issues”. Overall: This vehicle is well suited to city driving and equally at home in the country, but may not be the best choice for long distance trips. It is best suited to a family of four or less (children and smaller bodies in the rear). The 21 inch wheels provide a great ride in “Comfort” & “Dynamic” modes, better than the smaller offerings. The brakes are excellent and feel stable under hard braking. The vehicle has an “ECO” mode to improve fuel consumption, and there are 6 different models and a plethora of options to suit most needs. It also has all the latest safety features and collision avoidance. The top model could do with a more powerful motor, but overall it is miles better than the competition. I would rate it 5 out of 5 if it wasn’t for the metalized windshield, display washout, spurty throttle and transmission delay. Bottom Line: If you want the best looking and best handling compact SUV in the world, your search stops here. Details of Issues (nothing major): The vehicle is a bit expensive compared to the competition, and the metalized windshield blocks radio frequencies, which can be a nuisance. The Toll Tag clear patch seems to be too small, which has resulted in a reduced range of wireless devices by up to 95%. This includes door and gate openers, phones, RFID, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, radar detectors, and medical alerts. Additionally, the throttle pedal is overly sensitive and feather-light, which can cause unwanted acceleration spurts on bumpy roads or sharp corners. It also feels unnatural and uncomfortable to hold your foot up all the time when cruising. However, the car has excellent adaptive cruise control. The touchscreen can be difficult to see in bright daylight and barely visible in bright sunny conditions due to its angled position ahead of the roofline and lack of sunshade. The windshield is metalized to block UV rays, which reduces normal vision at night. The road noise is noticeable, and the car could benefit from improved floor and wheel arch insulation. The automatic relocking and arming feature can only be turned on or off by the dealership, which can be inconvenient in the country. Lastly, there is no visible external indicator that the doors are locked, except for the folding door mirrors, which can be difficult to see or hear in noisy and bright light situations.Automatic Power Fold Door Mirrors are a useful option, but it can only be turned on and off by the dealership. Keyless Door Locking can be overly complicated and imprecise, although unlocking is great. The manual goes into detail not to grab the door handle while touching the lock sensor. In reality, it is only necessary to be lightly touching the handle for the sensor not to work, or if your finger touches a little outside of the sensor area. One could turn on the auto locking full time, but that causes other irritating convenience issues. The Restricted Driver’s Foot Well is not a good place to put your left foot if you have long legs, as the wheel well intrudes into this space. There are also reflections in the driver’s side mirror from bright shiny driver’s side air vent bezel, as well as reflections from bright shiny bezels (air vents and display) on the front windshield. The Driver’s Maximum Seat Height is also quite high, with the front dash and side window sills being quite high. However, after 4.5 years, the vehicle is still performing very well with no failures and no visits to the dealership, except for 4 new tires being the only major expense. The battery in the key fob has had to be replaced three times, but that is the only issue. After 6 years, the vehicle is still performing well, with another set of tires being the only major expense due to the soft tires meeting the latest rash of chip-seal roads that just tear up the tires. Fortunately, the government is saving money on road repair. The metalized windshield is still the most annoying aspect of the vehicle. The vehicle has never been to the dealership for repair or maintenance, and it has never broken down or required anything other than an oil change and a new battery. I am not planning on buying a new vehicle since they have become computerized nightmares, spying on their owners. EVs are just now ready for primetime, no matter how much the government tries to ram them down our throats.

You and your wife have owned several SUVs over the years and it's great to hear that you really love this one. The vehicle is not only fun to drive, but also has excellent handling and braking, which stops on a dime. It's impressive that you have the nearly 300 horsepower turbocharged 4 cylinder model, which is very quick. The safety features are also top-notch, with automatic braking that can stop the vehicle for you if you happen to miss seeing a pedestrian or biker. The heated windshield, seats, and steering wheel will definitely come in handy during the winter. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

We absolutely love everything about the e-Pace! The styling, quality, ride, comfort, handling, and ease of using the info system are all top-notch. The only downside is that certain basic features, like Home Link and seat memory, are optional. The latter requires a two-jump upgrade. Unfortunately, the option for 10-way power seats with front and rear heated seats does not include seat position memory. You have to either get 14-way power seats with front seat heat or jump again to 14-way power with front and rear heat to finally get memory seats. Additionally, the options dealers are ordering or Jaguar is shipping cars missed the mark for me. I would have preferred a basic option like Home Link instead of the overly expensive rear seat click and go coat hangers or car care options. However, the covered service and 5-year warranty are great inclusions. We were coming to the end of the lease on our Volvo XC40 R-Design, which is a great SUV. We wanted to look at another SUV option before leasing another Volvo XC40, and we were so pleased with the e-Pace that we leased the Jaguar. Several YouTube reviews found fault with the e-Pace and rated the XC-40 above the Jaguar, an opinion with which I do not agree. Both are great SUVs, and the Jaguar has the added benefit of being a little more rare - an SUV you don't see around every corner!

Over the years, I have been the proud owner of Corvettes, Alpha Romeo Spider, Cadillac, Lexus, and Ford. However, my 2018 Jaguar Epace has been my all-time favorite. It handles like a charm, is speedy and comfortable, and has just the right amount of accessories.

  5. Nathan Grimes 2024-11-06

I've only had the car for a week, but I'm already in love with it. It seems like everyone who sees it can't help but smile!
