2002 Hyundai Santa fe problems
The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.
The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.
As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

VEHICLE IS NOT DRIVABLE, OPENED CASE WITH HYUNDAI, NOT EXPECTING MUCH. VEHICLE ALSO HAD TO HAVE ENGINE CRADLE REPLACED (HYUNDAI DID REPLACE AT NO EXPENSE) HOWEVER THEY SCREWED MORE UP AND IT HAD TO BE RETURNED TO FIX THEIR MISTAKES. VEHICLE WAS "INSPECTED" FRONT TO REAR AND WAS "OK", TWICE. THAT WAS END OF 2015. THIS CORROSION COULD NOT HAPPEN IN THAT SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME. 2002 Hyundai Santa fe recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2002 Hyundai Santa fe.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:COIL SPRINGS
- Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model Year 2001-2006 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured from March 31, 2000, through February 15, 2006, that are registered and operated, or which were originally sold and registered, in the following 20 salt belt" states and the District of Columbia: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The affected vehicles may experience front coil spring corrosion from road salt, causing the coil spring to fracture and make contact with the tire.
- Consequence: If the front coil spring fractures due to corrosion it could cause the coil spring to make contact with the tire, possibly puncturing the tire and increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the coil spring, free of charge. The recall began on October 24, 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 124.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
- Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 83,355 MY 2001-2003 SANTA FE VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE REAR TRAILING ARMS, WHICH COULD LEAD TO THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE REAR TRAILING ARM STEEL. OWNERS MAY SEE OR FEEL SLIGHT TO MODERATE CHANGES IN VEHICLE OPERATION WHICH WILL INCREASE IF THE VEHICLE IS NOT REPAIRED. THESE CHANGES INCLUDE A LOWERING OF VEHICLE HEIGHT THAT CAN LEAD TO TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. OWNERS MAY ALSO NOTICE A CREAKING SOUND.
- Consequence: IF THE CORROSION IS ALLOWED TO PROGRESS, THE REAR TRAILING ARM MAY FRACTURE WHILE DRIVING, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR TRAILING ARMS FOR INTERNAL CORROSION DAMAGE. IF SPECIFIED LEVELS OF CORROSION DAMAGE ARE FOUND, THE REAR TRAILING ARMS WILL BE REPLACED. REAR TRAILING ARMS THAT DO NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT WILL HAVE DRAINAGE HOLES ADDED AND WILL BE TREATED WITH RUST-PROOFING MATERIAL TO ARREST THE CORROSION PROCESS. INSPECTION, TREATMENT AND REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES WILL BE CONDUCTED AT NO COST TO OWNERS. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

- Components: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
- Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 120, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES OTHER THAN PASSENGER CARS."
- Consequence: THE TIRE PRESSURE LABELS DO NOT CONTAIN THE INFORMATION REQUIRED BY THE STANDARD.
- Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A CORRECT LABEL AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON OCTOBER 29, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:STARTER ASSEMBLY
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.7 LITER V-6 ENGINES, IMPROPERLY MANUFACTURED CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSORS (CPS) WERE INSTALLED. THE CPS CASES WERE IMPROPERLY MANUFACTURED AND DID NOT MEET DIMENSIONAL SPECIFICATIONS. INTERNAL GAPS WITHIN THE CASES ALLOWED EPOXY TO CONTACT THE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD, WHICH RESULTED IN CRACKING OF THE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD CAPACITOR.
- Consequence: A DAMAGED CPS CAPACITOR COULD RESULT IN ENGINE STALLING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CPS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON MARCH 10, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-829-9956.

I recently sold my '02 GLS V6 Santa Fe AWD just a few days ago (Feb 2012). As the second owner, I can confidently say that it was HANDS DOWN the best car I've ever owned. It had an impressive 246K!! miles on it, and the most amazing part was that there wasn't a SINGLE rattle or loose panel inside. This was completely unheard of for me, as I had always owned Fords. Although I had to repair the engine and transmission along the way, it was a real trooper! Initially, I was hesitant to buy it as it seemed too utilitarian, but over the years, I grew to totally respect its design integrity and heartiness. I went shopping for another car yesterday, an '07 with 90k miles to replace it, but what a DISAPPOINTMENT! It was so cheaply made. I might just have to scout around for another low miles '02 again. What happened to Hyundai?

I've been impressed with my Hyundai Santa Fe. As a long-time Honda/Toyota buyer, I was initially skeptical about Hyundai. However, the Santa Fe's unique and bold styling caught my eye, and I decided to get one last fall. Since then, my experience has been nothing short of impressive. Hyundai's advertising claim, 'Driving is Believing,' is absolutely true. Once you drive one, especially the FWD version which is sportier, you'll definitely want to get one.
-
You have to drive it. So many people stare at this SUV. It rides beautifully, turns great, and has plenty of room. The stereo is good and it gets about 22 miles per gallon. I have the LX front-wheel-drive model and I love it. I kept my BMW and got this SUV after testing every other SUV. I did like the Lexus, but I love this SUV. It's a smooth ride with heated seats and a great view of the road.
-
We purchased our SUV brand new in September of '01 and have been extremely satisfied with it overall. We opted for the extended warranty at a very affordable price, which has definitely paid off for us. Despite its weight, the 2.7 V6 engine provides plenty of power and we're pleased with its reasonable fuel mileage of 20 mpg on average. While we have experienced a few mechanical issues, they were mostly covered under warranty. For example, we had to replace both front axles when they cracked, and we've had a strange squealing noise from the rear that the dealership fixed, although it does seem to reappear from time to time. Additionally, the rear hatch door handle release latch sticks in, and the door will not latch shut if you don't pull it out by hand. The radio also goes on and off by itself. However, we're happy to report that this SUV is GREAT in the snow with its full-time 4WD. We plan on keeping it for a long time!
-
I have owned this vehicle for over a year now and I am consistently impressed with the comfort and styling of the Santa Fe. The ride and spaciousness are major pluses. We have taken several trips and neither my back nor anyone else's has experienced discomfort after a long ride. With the warranty, there is a lot of peace of mind. I would definitely buy another one and highly recommend it.

When I bought my 2002 Santa Fe in 2006, I was thrilled to have found such a great deal. It had only 45k miles on it and had only one previous owner. The first couple of years were fantastic, but unfortunately, some problems started to arise. At 80k miles, I had to replace the transmission, and at about 100k miles, everything from engine coolant to power steering fluid started to leak. To top it all off, while driving on the freeway just two days after an oil change, my engine started knocking, and as I was trying to pull over, it began to smoke. When I opened the hood, I discovered a small engine fire. Needless to say, I had to get a new engine, but I decided to get rid of the car instead. I had already spent close to $5,000 on repairs and was ready to move on.

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned owning a 2002 Santa Fe LX for 9 months. However, after turning 10,000 miles, you mentioned that the engine started to sound like a diesel engine at idle. The service department and regional representative said it was normal engine noise, but I can understand how concerning that must have been for you. Additionally, you mentioned that the alternator was under-powered and the lights would fade after a stop, and the transmission indicator would blink with the turn signals. It's unfortunate that you had to deal with those issues. If you ever need any assistance with your vehicle, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for sharing your experience with me!

On the second day of owning it, I took my car on a long trip to Florida. Unfortunately, after just 2 hours, the AC froze up. Despite seeking support from the dealer, I was left without any assistance. I have since tried replacing the compressor, checking for leaks, and replacing sensors, but nothing seems to work. As a result, I am unable to take my car on trips longer than 2 hours when I need AC. Additionally, I have had to replace the O2 sensor 3 times. When I first bought the car, it was in the shop for almost 3 months straight. It is worth noting that the warranty is not transferable if bought used. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing this car again.
