2021 Bmw X3 problems
The BMW X3 is an SUV manufactured by BMW since 2003, based on the BMW 5 Series platform. Now in its third generation, BMW markets the car as a Sports Activity Vehicle, the company's proprietary descriptor for its X-line luxury vehicles.
The first-generation X3 was designed by BMW in conjunction with Magna Steyr of Graz, Austria—who also manufactured all X3s under contract to BMW. BMW manufactured the second-generation X3 at their Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, United States. Starting with the third generation, BMW South Africa's Rosslyn plant began production of the X3, alongside the Spartanburg plant, after the facility underwent a major upgrade to prepare for the X3 production, replacing the long-running 3 Series production in the plant. About 76,000 units will be manufactured there annually.
The car was the first mid-size, premium SUV on the market. In 2008, BMW started competing with the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (renamed GLC-Class since 2016), and numerous other SUVs in this segment. The X3 is smaller than the X5 and X6, and bigger than the X1 and the X2.
An all-electric variant is sold as the BMW iX3.

Common 2021 Bmw X3 problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2021 BMW X3, several common problems have been highlighted:
- Vibration Issues: Some owners have reported vibration issues, particularly around 50-55 mph, which have been attributed to driveshaft problems. Despite being a well-documented issue, BMW has faced challenges in addressing and resolving this issue promptly.

- Fuel Economy: The 30i model of the BMW X3 has been criticized for its poor fuel economy, especially when compared to other engine options like the B-58 engine. Some owners have found the fuel efficiency to be subpar, leading to higher fuel costs over time.
- Tech Issues: Complaints have been raised about tech-related problems, such as Apple CarPlay connection issues and the lack of certain features like remote start and the iDrive Recorder App in earlier models. These shortcomings have left some owners feeling dissatisfied with the technology offerings in the 2021 BMW X3.
- Design Flaws: Specific design flaws have been mentioned, like the plastic part in moonroofs that can deteriorate easily, leading to costly repairs. Additionally, issues with brake pads and rotors needing frequent replacement have been highlighted, impacting the overall ownership experience.
These common problems with the 2021 BMW X3, as reported by owners, shed light on various aspects of ownership that potential buyers should consider before investing in this vehicle.

- Summary: This complaint is not due/regarding an accident. It is a complaint about the response time to remedy a recall which has been months long now. In July 2024, BMW recalled 291,112 X3 models from 2018 to 2023 due to a risk of the interior cargo rail detaching in a crash. The attachment bolts for the rail could become damaged, increasing the risk of injury to passengers. What is taking so long to get this fixed? Seems the remedy is to simply replace bolts. I am unable to use this car while it has a safety recall outstanding. Please expedite this fix, it has been several months and in the meantime this car sits being unproductive.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
- VIN: 5UXTY5C00M9
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Vehicle has consistently presented with a loud screeching noise from the brakes. When emergency braking needed, there are incidents of a slipping feel to the brakes where they do not seem as through they are applying properly. The slipping feel and noise of the brakes increases during wet/snowy weather. The noise is not a safety concern as much as the slipping feel of the brakes is significantly concerning. When emergency braking is applied, any slipping is putting my safety and the safety of passengers in my vehicle/surrounding vehicles is at high risk. Multiple service appointments surrounding this persistent problem have resulted in dismissive responses from BMW. The service center has inspected the brakes, acknowledged the loud consistent screeching noise, but BMW states the brakes are normal and the noise is expected because they are "sport brakes". BMW now recommends replacing rotors but insists it is only due to the "noise complaint". The vehicle is only serviced at a BMW dealer/service center and has been inspected by BMW. There are no warning lamps or messages related to the problem. The problem was existing when I first purchased the vehicle in 2022, was acknowledged by BMW, and has been persistently reported at every service appointment as not subsiding and in fact increasing in volume. I believe there is a manufacturing problem with the BMW x3 SAV model that impacts the braking system (brake pads and rotors), causing slipping when emergency braking is engaged and causing excessive noise from front and rear brakes.

- Summary: Sirrus XM Advertising pops up in the middle of the speedometer and stays there. Blocks vision of speedometer. Big Blue square comes on at night distracting driver. Several internet posts and complaints advise that it comes on blocking the rear camera vision. Contacted Sirrus they say they cant do anything about it, it is built into the car. Contacted BMW and their "Genius" squad they don't know how to get rid of it. I see postings of other car brands having the same complaint. Consumers don't spend $70.000.00 for a vehicle to be solicited for a service that they don't want. Besides the safety factor. This is an invasion of privacy and none requested solicitation. Please look into this.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-08
- VIN: 5UXTS1C01M9
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Driving on a highway with occasional traffic lights, my 2021 X3 Plugin hybrid's sunroof's from glass cracked with a loud bang. I had it closed and the sun shade part also was closed. The loud bank also felt like an impact on my head and I felt in a bit of a shock like the time I was hit from behind with a shock and having to think. I first though it was a tire and slowed down to safely exit into a business parking lot to asses the situation. After checking the tires I noticed something on the roof. The glass was cracked and deformed in an upward direction. It was still pushing upward and a 4-6 inch section fell off and onto the top of the sun shade part. In safety, the loud shock caused a brief distraction on a highway going at least 50 MPH. Also if the sun shade was open some of the glass could have fallen on me. I searched online and found previous complaints about 'exploding sunroofs': https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2018/bmw-exploding-sunroof-lawsuit.shtml. I did not see anything coming toward the car or notice other cars possibly slowing down or getting hit by something that would have hit my sunroof and bounced around in the traffic. I mobile detailer helped clean up the glass so I can drive on and able to take it to the dealer.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-29
- VIN: 5UXTY3C06M9
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Both front end tie-rods had to be replaced at 28000 miles. They were making a loud popping noise when steering the vehicle on uneven pavement. The bushings on the tie-rods were worn out and could have failed at any time, resulting in a complete loss of steering control. The vehicle has not been in any accidents or received any damage to wheels and/or tires from hitting any curbs or potholes. In my opinion, this is a dangerous condition which warrants additional investigation. The repair / replacement was performed at the auto dealership where the vehicle was purchased new in April 2021.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-14
- VIN: 5UXTS1C06M9
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The BMW X3 went in for a recall to reprogram the DME. After updating the DME software by BMW the DME was no longer talking to other modules. The BMW Assistant Service Manager said and I quote him "IT'S A KNOWN ISSUE WITHOUT A FIX". I ask for clarification and I was told that there were some 100 modules or so that are in the car and that they now no longer reliably talked with other modules as a result of the updating the DME recall software. I was given one example by BMW of possible implications to modules not talking to each other where BMW was not sure if the airbag was getting correct information. BMW when on to say they were not sure what exactly was and was not affected but they considered it now a safety issue. They have had our BMW X3 since February 7th, 2023 after numerous fix attempts. As of today that would be 101 days at the BMW service department. BMW also said there were other BMWs with the same issue. Bottom line BMW treated the issue as a safety issue. Again that safety issue was created by a failed updating the DME software module on a recall. There is a dashboard emissions warning light that appears when the hybrid battery is drained. BMW also indicated that they have no idea what the full extent of failed software update, has done. RECALL . VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-25
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5UXTY9C02M9
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: I was slowly pulling into a parking space and as I applied pressure to the brakes, there was no response. In fact the car seemed to rev up and accelerate, jumping the curb and ramming a tree. I was able to steer away from the tree to avoid hitting the center of the front end, but smashing the left front. Even after hitting the tree the car did not slow and I’m trying to pump the brakes, there was no response… I kept going over a grassy area, across a sidewalk and back into the driveway in front of the building, finally the brakes engaged and the car came to a stop. I was then able to pull into another space safely out of the way. I was so lucky it was only 7:15 am and no pedestrians were around and no other vehicles. So I did not hit anyone and did not injure myself.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-27
- VIN: 5UXTS1C07M9

Vehicle as of April 2023 is currently held at dealership for 3rd time still without fix. Each check engine light results in a trip back to the dealership service center because we wouldn't know what is the severity of the issue. My safety is put at risk because a normal drive suddenly becomes worrisome and interrupted at random times and we have to attempt to safely pull over to call roadside assistance. Currently in communication with local dealership and have reached out to BMW Customer Relations without response yet.

Not sure what it thought it saw- tree shadows? The feature was set to medium. If another car was behind us it would have slammed into us. 5th time in 2 years. The dealer just shrugs and says to not set it to high responsiveness. This is a bad defect.

This beautiful machine has exceeded our expectations. It has exceptional performance and handling capabilities, and is pure opulence with cutting edge technology.

Handles well, has a good turbo, and decent mileage for a big car. It would be even better if it had more USB ports, as we have lots of electronics that need to be plugged in, such as my Apple Watch, cell phone, and iPad. Overall, it's a great car!

I checked out everything from Audi S to Mercedes AMG to Jaguar S and Porsche GTS and it out-classes & is less expensive than all of them! I love this car inside & out!! Great fun to drive yet practical… truly a winning combination! 2021 X3 M40i—Phytonic Blue Metallic exterior with Cognac interior

Hi there! Have you considered the power of that?

The BMW X3 xDrive30e is a really nifty machine! Although it's more expensive than its gasoline counterparts, the nearly $7,500 rebate makes the price really great. The exterior styling is lovely, especially compared to the current whisker phase the X3 has been going through lately, and the ride is impressively smooth despite its not-so-impressive ground clearance. The interior feels grand and luxurious, even compared to its costly Daimler rival. The headlamps are brilliant for lighting up dark roads and the 360-degree camera feature makes blindspots cease to exist! Contrary to this article, I've found the MPG to be amazing, although I've only been using the comfort mode for a long while now. Quick sidenote: Perhaps the writer's MPG may have been unimpressive because of all those sporty, bulky, and therefore heavy additions... Anyway, I do, however, find the driving to be rather unpleasant: Although the ride is smooth as silk, I find the pull of the brakes and seemingly slow acceleration to be quite unpleasant (this is my first time using a PHEV or EV, so perhaps that's just my love of petrol cars talking). Although never struggling to achieve motorway speeds, something is very obviously missing with the driving experience of the xDrive30e. The climate control area of the infotainment system, however, is very likable. The software is very user friendly and I love how easy it is to cancel a route or mute voice guidance. The console wheel, too, is an awesome feature that I hope never goes away in BMWs. However, some of the buttons blend together in darker environments, and the shifter is far from ideal, perhaps the most confusing piece of technology I've witnessed in any car. But, although short on range, the xDrive30e satisfies that craving of owning a hybrid/electric car superbly, which brings me to my next point: The BMW xDrive30e has no competition other than itself! In 2021 and 2022, PHEV luxury cars are a rare breed, with most luxury vehicles being either fully electric or fully gas-powered. It's even more difficult to find a luxury crossover that is a PHEV, but BMW has bridged this gap successfully. BMW has accurately executed a European luxury crossover while still maintaining its 'SUV-ness,' making it unique among other vehicles. Although the xDrive30e and its alternatives may appear similar, they have little in common, except for the xDrive30i or the sDrive30i, which are the PHEV's main competitors. Despite this, I am glad that BMW offered this eccentric vessel, and I do not regret my purchase, even if it has now been perhaps forever discontinued.

I have the 2021 X3 30i. After owning many different cars ranging from sedans, hatchbacks, and pick up trucks, I must say that the X3 is the most comfortable car to get in and out of. Like a few others have mentioned, I wish the seat was a touch more comfortable, and an armrest for my left arm, or bringing the seat closer to the door would definitely be more comfortable. The HK surround sound audio is okay, but nowhere near as loud and punchy as the HK found in smaller models like the sedans. Driving dynamics are actually pretty good, and for an SUV, it's very fun to drive. It's probably the best SUV I've driven in terms of handling and sharp turns, with a lot of confidence on snowy roads. Ground clearance and elevation in the X3 are also more than decent, it's got more than enough ground clearance for light off-roading, and the elevated positioning really helps for good visibility and seeing the lines on the road better. However, my biggest complaint is the fuel economy. I initially opted for the 4-cylinder instead of the M40i to get better fuel economy considering how bad gas prices are getting. The dealer told me it would be a no-brainer, but my mistake was not doing my own research because the ratings between the 30i and M40i are not that far off. Which is honestly very upsetting considering a lot of people like myself would be opting for the weaker engine to save money on fuel. The fuel ratings they state online are nothing like what I'm getting in the real world. I have a short drive to work every morning, less than 10km with barely any traffic, and I'm losing anywhere between 4-6% on my gas tank with each trip via myBMW app. I reset my trip meter on the last fill-up, and it claims 118km of real distance to be driven, and my km range states I have done over 220km of range. It makes you wonder, where did 100km go? Especially when you take into account that this car requires premium gas, it's very upsetting that this car is more thirsty than a tri-athlete.For instance, I have noticed that when I am coasting into my street without pressing the gas pedal, my car takes off 2-3km of range in just 15 seconds. Even when I stop to perform a reverse park, it takes off a kilometer, even if it had just taken off a kilometer 5 seconds before. It is disappointing to see how bad the gas is. With gas prices skyrocketing, it costs anywhere between $125-$140 for a full tank, and I have to fill up once a week. As someone who paid $70,000 for a car that requires premium gas, I expected better fuel economy than my previous RAM 1500 pick up. However, I have no complaints about the comfort, auto drive, ease of access, and modest cargo space. But when the fuel economy is THIS bad, it makes me regret trading in my 340i Gran Turismo, which had almost the same amount of cargo space, better rear legroom, and the exact same fuel economy if not better. The only difference is that the 340i has an inline 6 engine, whereas my X3 has a 4-cylinder engine that SHOULD be producing better fuel economy.

Previously, I owned a BMW X5, but unfortunately experienced a transmission failure at around 100,000 km on the odometer. The cost to rebuild the transmission was too high, so I decided to give up owning it. However, I still love BMW products and ended up purchasing a BMW X3 shortly after. In hindsight, it may not have been the best decision as I recently experienced another transmission failure with my X3 at 78,000 km on the odometer. The car had to be towed to the BMW service in Auto Mall North Shore, where I was informed that a new transmission replacement would cost $12,000 or a used transmission replacement would cost $4,000, but neither option was covered by warranty. Dealing with two transmission failures between my X5 and X3 has been quite frustrating, and I have decided that I will not be purchasing another BMW in the future. I have also had some negative experiences with BMW service, and unfortunately, they did not offer any apologies for the difficult situations I have faced as a BMW owner. If you are considering purchasing a BMW, I would advise you to think carefully, as you may face significant financial losses within 100,000 km or less than 5 years. It has been a disappointing experience for me, and I would not recommend owning a BMW unless you are prepared for the potential challenges.

I've been the proud owner of this car for 14 months now and I must say, it's been a great vehicle overall. It's well-built and I haven't had any issues with it so far. I purchased it specifically for towing a small travel trailer and it does a fantastic job at it. While I do disagree with some reviewers who claim it's fun to drive, it's still a reliable highway cruiser. However, it's not the best option for off-roading. The car has a lot of technology included, which is incredibly helpful given the blind spots and other limitations of the vehicle. The interior and exterior are well-executed with nice materials, although I have noticed a decline in the quality of materials over the years. The turning radius is a bit large and it can be difficult to parallel park, but that's a small price to pay for such a great vehicle. The gear ratios and shift points can be a bit frustrating at times, but overall it's a minor issue. Lastly, while the car may not be the best looking vehicle out there, it still has a unique charm to it. BMW has decided to start doing these large I believe that the design of this vehicle may have been influenced by other manufacturers who have opted for larger grills. While the price tag of over $50,000 may seem steep, there are many other models available that offer better value. As someone who has owned three BMWs, I feel that the 'ultimate driving machine' slogan may no longer be applicable. However, this vehicle is well-suited for families who need to transport their children to school, run errands, and take road trips. Based on my experience with this particular model, I may consider exploring other options in the future.

The 2021 X3 M40i, with approximately 9000 miles, has been reported to have issues with the AC floor and rear vents blowing cold air in winter and warm air in summer. Despite no error code being detected, BMW has stated that the system is operating as intended. However, it is clear that this issue requires further attention and investigation.
