2001 Oldsmobile Aurora problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Aurora is a luxury sedan, manufactured and marketed by General Motors from 1994 until 2003 over two generations — sharing platforms with Buick Riviera and using the Cadillac-derived G platform. At the time of production, the Aurora was the flagship vehicle in the Oldsmobile lineup. It originated as the 1989 Oldsmobile tube car concept.

The Aurora replaced the Toronado coupe and eventually the Oldsmobile 98, LSS and Regency in the Oldsmobile range — using V8 and V6 engines. It was equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission.

Origins

Early design work on what would become the Aurora began as early as the late 1980s with the 1989 Oldsmobile Tube Car engineering concept, designed by Bud Chandler. In addition to the overall similar shape, the Tube Car featured many detailed elements that were later found on the production automobile, including a full-width taillamp, wraparound rear windshield, and frameless windows. Unlike the eventual production car, the Tube Car used a pillarless hardtop design with suicide doors. The final production design was signed off on in July 1989, originally set for a 1992 start of production.

By the Aurora's introduction, Oldsmobile sales had fallen from a record high of 1,066,122 in 1985 to 402,936 in 1993; rumors of the division's demise were rampant, which GM at the time firmly denied. Competition from Acura, Infiniti and Lexus offered similar products that benefited from superior durability and reliability reputations. GM developed the Aurora to rejuvenate Oldsmobile as a result. The Aurora bore no Oldsmobile badging save for the radio-CD-cassette deck and engine cover (during focus group testing, potential customers had been repelled when they learned the Aurora was in truth an Oldsmobile). At one point, then-division head John Rock (who had recently arrived from the GMC division) proposed using the Aurora name to replace the Oldsmobile brand entirely and offer cars in a similar fashion to GM's nascent Saturn division (a plan ultimately nixed by the GM higher-ups, though for a period Saturn's no-haggle pricing was implemented). Instead, the Aurora used a stylized A emblem, foreshadowing a similar restyling of Oldsmobile's corporate "rocket" emblem for 1997.

One bizarre footnote of development was a 1993 incident where a prototype Aurora, driven by freelance car reviewer Tim Dunne, was nearly totaled after a four-foot log fell from a Michigan Department of Natural Resources truck (Dunne was able to maneuver the Aurora so much that only the right front wheel was struck); this subsequently led then-governor John Engler to purchase an Aurora (Engler having been a life-long Oldsmobile customer).

Oldsmobile subsequently borrowed Aurora styling cues for its Intrigue and compact Alero models.

Common 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora problems

The Oldsmobile Aurora, particularly the 2001 model, is known to have several common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequent issues and their details:

  • Fuel Pump Failure: The 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora may experience fuel pump failure, which can lead to problems such as difficulty starting the car, stalling, or reduced engine power. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear on the fuel pump, electrical problems, or contamination in the fuel system.
  • Power Steering Pump Whine: Some owners of the 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora have reported a whining noise coming from the power steering system, which can be caused by a failing power steering pump or low power steering fluid levels.
  • Transmission Slipping: The second generation Oldsmobile Aurora models (2001-2003) may experience transmission slipping, which can cause a range of issues such as reduced power, difficulty shifting gears, and decreased fuel efficiency. This problem can be caused by various factors, including worn out transmission bands, a malfunctioning torque converter, or low transmission fluid levels.
  • Steering Wheel Squeak: Some owners of the 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora have reported a squeaking noise coming from the steering wheel, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn out steering components, low power steering fluid levels, or a loose steering wheel.
  • Brake Pads and Rotors: The Oldsmobile Aurora may experience brake pad wear, rotor warping, or brake caliper sticking, which can cause a range of issues such as reduced braking performance, increased stopping distances, or a grinding noise when braking. These problems can be caused by various factors, including normal wear and tear, excessive heat, or contamination in the brake system.

It is important to note that these issues may not affect all Oldsmobile Aurora models and that regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these problems.

IN ADDITION TO THIS, THE STEERING COLUMN MAKES AN AUDIBLE CLICK NOISE WHEN TURNING PAST THE 12 O'CLOCK POSITION ANYTIME THE STEERING WHEEL IS CRANKED, IT DOES NOT HAPPEN SOMETIMES, IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME. THIS IS MOST LIKELY DO TO POOR LUBRICATION OF A BEARING OR JOINT IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE SERVICE STABILITY SYSTEM LIGHT COMES ON AND VEHICLE CHIMES AS WELL BUT THE ESC WORKS AS IT SHOULD, NO MATTER THE DRIVING CONDITIONS IT COMES ON, MOST LIKELY A FAULTY CIRCUIT BOARD.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-07-14
  • VIN: 1G3GR64HX14
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I AM WRITING TO YOU TO DETAIL AN ISSUE WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM ON THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE WITH NO BRAKE PRESSURE OR VERY LITTLE FOR MONTHS NOW AND IN SEPTEMBER OF 2014 I TOOK THE CAR TO A SHOP TO HAVE THE BRAKES CHECKED. THE SHOP TOLD ME THE MASTER CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT MY COST AND I ALLOWED THEM TO REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER. WHEN I DROVE THE CAR HOME IT SEEMED AS IF THE PROBLEM HAD BEEN CORRECTED. HOWEVER, I HAD AN APPT WITH MY DR. AND HAD NO ISSUE GETTING THERE. LEAVING THE APPT AND ONTO THE FREEWAY HOME AND I NOTICED AGAIN BRAKE PRESSURE HAD BECOME LACKING AGAIN. I GOT OFF THE MAJOR FREEWAY AND TOOK SIDESTREET HOME AND AS I GOT EVEN CLOSER TO HOME THE SAME ISSUE HAD RETURNED. I HAD ALMOST NO BRAKE PRESSURE AND BY THE TIME I GOT AROUND THE CORNER FROM MY HOME THE LOW BRAKE FLUID INDICATOR HAD COME ON. THIS HAD NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. THERE WERE NO LEAKS OF BRAKE FLUID FROM THIS VEHICLE BEFORE. I WOULD NOTICE SUCH A LEAK . TAKING IT BACK TO THE SHOP THE NEXT MORNING THE SHOP FOREMAN INDICATED TO ME THAT IT WAS NOW THE ABS UNIT WHICH WAS NOW LEAKING BRAKE FLUID AND THAT IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $1500.00. I CHECKED INTO A RECALL FOR THIS ABS LEAKING ISSUE AND NOT ONLY CALLED GM BUT CHECKED MY VIN WITH THE DATABASE AND NOW I AM BEING ADVISED THAT THIS VIN IS NOT IN THE RECALL LIST FOR THE SAME ISSUE THAT OVER 8147 UNITS HAVE HAD. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY IF THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH OTHER VEHICLES SAME MAKE AND MODEL AND YEAR WHY I AM NOW FORCED TO NOW BE WITHOUT A CAR SINCE I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE THIS ABS MODULE AT THIS SPECIFIC RIDICULOUS COST AND I CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR BEING THE HUGE SAFETY HAZARD IT IS BEING WITHOUT PROPER BRAKES. I CANNOT GET MY CAR TO PASS UTAH STATE INSPECTION EITHER WHICH MEANS I CANNOT LICENSE THE CAR FOR THE YEAR. I CANT GET TO WORK OR ANYWHERE ELSE I COULD KILL SOMEONE OR MYSELF WITH NO BRAKES. *TR

  • VIN: 1G3GS64C814
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE CAR WOULD INTERMITTENTLY SPUTTER OR SHUT OFF, EVEN IN A CURVE. IT FINALLY FRIGHTENED ME SO MUCH THAT I REPORTED IT TO THE DEALER ON 2/12/2009. THE DEALER CHARGED ME $463 PLUS TAX TO REPLACE THE FRONT AND REAR ENGINE CRANKSHAFT SENSORS. THIS MALFUNCTION IS VERY SIMILAR IN NATURE TO IGNITION FAILURE AND COULD EASILY LEAD TO INJURY. MY CAR IS A 2001 OLDSMOBILE AURORA WITH THE 4.0 V-8 ENGINE. IT HAD 48,000 MILES AT THE TIME OF FAILURE. THE REPLACEMENT PARTS HAVE WORKED AS I NOW HAVE 123,000 MILES ON THE CAR AND THE PROBLEM NO LONGER OCCURS. I WENT ONLINE AND FOUND 20 OTHER OWNERS WHO REPORTED THE SAME ISSUES AT THE FOLLOWING WEBSITE: HTTP://REPAIRPAL.COM/STALLING-DUE-TO-IGNITION-MODULE-OR-CRANKSHAFT-POSITION-SENSOR-FAILURE-144 I BELIEVE THAT A SERVICE BULLETIN SHOULD HAVE BEEN ISSUED AT MINIMUM. *TR

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-08-14
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: THIS REPORT CONCERNS AN UNUSED SPARE DONUT TIRE IN THE TRUNK OF A 2001 OLDSMOBILE AURORA (ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT). LAST WEEK WE NEEDED IT AND WHEN WE LOOKED AT IT IN THE TRUNK IT IS VERY OBVIOUSLY SEPARATED. IT WAS NEVER USED YET WAS TOTALLY SEPARATED. FIRESTONE HAS BEEN UNRESPONSIVE (NOT EVEN COLLECTING INFORMATION ON THE TIRE TO RELAY TO THEIR FACTORY) - 2 EMAILS AND 3 PHONECALLS. THIS TIRE IS A T125/70R16. IT WAS NEVER ON A RECALL LIST THAT I CAN FIND. I AM SURE IT IS SITTING IN MORE TRUNKS THAN MINE. FORTUNATELY THE TIRE WAS OBVIOUSLY SEPARATED SO I DID NOT MOUNT IT AND DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT BUT I NEEDED IT LAST WEEK AND ENDED UP NEEDING TO GET MY CAR TOWED SINCE THE SPARE WAS SEPARATED/UNUSABLE. I HOPE YOU CAN AT LEAST GET THE INFORMATION IN THE SYSTEM SO SOMEONE DOESN'T MOUNT A TIRE THAT WILL IMMEDIATELY BLOW OUT. AND I ALSO LEARNED TODAY I CANNOT GET A REPLACEMENT (THE DEALER TOLD ME I SHOULD CONTACT A JUNKYARD - THIS IS A 2001 CAR- NO SPARE???). MY MAIN CONCERN IS THAT THE INFORMATION GET USED TO MAKE SURE OTHER PEOPLE DON'T HAVE THIS ISSUE. I AM SURE PLENTY OF CARS HAVE THIS SPARE TIRE. *TR

Negative 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora car reviews

  1. Roy Weimann 2024-09-29

I love this car, but it has had some problems. I bought it just a few months ago, and unfortunately, the check engine light has already come on. I've had to replace the driver's door module ($88) and two bulbs. However, the comfort features are so great that I'm still happy with my purchase. I really hope this car lasts until I can pay it off!

  2. Derek Wyman 2024-09-14

I had my Oldsmobile for a year and it was alright, but I recently traded it for a Honda Accord. While the engine and transmission were solid, there were a few issues that came up over the course of the year, such as the water pump ($350), power steering pump ($200), front-end wheel bearings, tie rods, and front-end alignment ($650), and the A/C compressor ($900). Additionally, there was an oil leak that caused me to go through 4 quarts in between oil changes. Unfortunately, the interior quality wasn't very good, with the headliner falling down and the door panel plastic crumbling. Overall, it was a great car, but the maintenance costs were quite expensive.

  3. Dagmar D'Amore 2024-07-21

This car has a comfortable and stylish design. However, there have been some issues with fit and finish, such as rattling, water leaks, and warped brakes. Additionally, there have been some problems with the exterior trim and major electrical issues that have yet to be resolved despite multiple visits to the shop. The steering wheel also makes a popping sound when turned. On the bright side, GM did provide a

This car is still a blast to drive even after 3 years of ownership. It always turns heads as it is almost one of a kind in my town. I even saw another black one on the highway and the couple in that car waved in surprise. However, I must admit that the reliability of this car has been quite disappointing. I purchased it with only 26,000 miles on it and have had to replace the water pump, secondary air pump, front end parts, steering parts, and at 74,600 miles, right before the warranty expired, the transmission went out. Unfortunately, the car has not been the same since. It shifts hard around 40 mph and despite the dealerships' attempts to fix it, the issue persists. I believe it has something to do with the O.D. Despite the costly repairs, I still think this is a fantastic car.

  5. Aidan Fritsch 2024-05-18

Who wouldn't love the smooth and powerful acceleration of the 3.5L V6 engine that also delivers great fuel economy? Additionally, you'll stand out from the crowd since there aren't many around.

Positive 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora car reviews

  1. Jesse Sporer 2024-10-29

Overall rating is 'Very Good'. The only problem was the Computer Control Center, and this was handled under the warranty at 45,000 miles. City mileage is OK at 18.5 mpg and 24 on the highway. The car is very comfortable and handles well.

  2. Reid Klocko 2024-10-22

This is definitely one of the best American cars ever made! It's a shame they stopped producing them. Although GM has had some issues lately, this car is a real gem. I've driven it from NY to Florida and it's both comfortable and fuel-efficient, getting 27 mpg. We've owned it for 2 years and have had no problems with it. I understand that some people have had issues, but every car has its quirks.

The 2001 Aurora 4.0 that I have owned for the past 2 years has been an amazing car! I have never driven or seen anything like it in the 43 years that I have been driving. I cannot express enough how great this car is!

Congratulations on your successful bid for the Aurora on E Bay! It's great to hear that you have a personal connection to this car, having owned a 3.5 L back in 2001. It's also impressive that your 4.0 L has been going strong since February, with only minor issues that were easy to take care of. It's clear that you have a keen eye for a good deal, and I'm sure you'll find another great car for your wife when her lease is up. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with the Aurora, it sounds like an exceptional value for money. Have a great day!

This car is great, but I'm disappointed that General Motors discontinued Oldsmobile and failed to transfer the Aurora to another line, such as Buick. As a lifelong GM customer, I feel alienated. Have you considered offering a similar model under a different brand? Thank you for your attention to this matter.
