2010 Nissan Rogue problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Rogue is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan. It made its debut in October 2007 for the 2008 model year. Beginning in 2013 for the 2014 model year, the model has been merged with the X-Trail sold outside the North American market, making them identical. It is currently Nissan's best-selling vehicle in the United States.

As of 2023, the Rogue was manufactured at the Nissan Smyrna Assembly Plant in Tennessee, United States and at the Nissan Motor Kyushu plant in Kanda, Fukuoka, Japan. Between August 2014 and March 2020, it was also built at the Renault Samsung Motors plant in Busan, South Korea under contract.

First generation (S35; 2007)

The first-generation Rogue made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 7 January 2007. It replaces the Nissan X-Trail in Canada as Nissan's entry-level SUV and the body-on-frame Nissan Xterra in Mexico due to the Smyrna plant freeing capacity for the Suzuki Equator, although the Xterra continued on sale in the United States and Canada through 2015 after being withdrawn from the Mexican market after the 2008 model year.

The first-generation Rogue was available in three trim levels in the United States: S, SV and SL, available with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Common 2010 Nissan Rogue problems

The 2010 Nissan Rogue has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues primarily concern the fuel gauge, check engine light, and sunroof.

  • Check Engine Light due to Code P0444: Some owners have reported experiencing the check engine light coming on due to code P0444. This code indicates a problem with the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) system. Specifically, it suggests a leak in the system, which can lead to fuel vapor escaping into the atmosphere. This issue can negatively impact fuel efficiency and increase emissions.
  • The Sunroof May Not Close Completely: A few owners have reported issues with the sunroof not closing completely. This can be an inconvenience, especially during inclement weather, as it may allow water to enter the vehicle. The problem might be due to a mechanical issue with the sunroof motor or a wiring problem that prevents the sunroof from closing properly.

These problems, while not affecting all 2010 Nissan Rogues, have been reported by some owners and should be considered when purchasing or maintaining this vehicle. It is important to note that these issues may not be exclusive to the 2010 model year and could potentially affect other model years as well.

What is the most common problem with a 2010 Nissan Rogue?

Transmission failures are the most widespread complaint from owners at around 125,000 miles. The CVT transmission is a known weak spot across many Nissan vehicles and when it fails it has to be replaced.

Does the 2010 Nissan Rogue have transmission problems?

Unfortunately, Rogue models usually experience CVT failure hindering them from exceeding 3000 RPM. This problem is especially noticeable when the vehicle is climbing a hill or maneuvering sloppy terrain, where it encounters a loss of power, which stops the car abruptly.

What is the biggest problem with Nissan Rogue?

The problematic transmission system is the likely culprit for the Rogue's most reported issue: acceleration loss. Reports claimed they experienced shaking, jerking, and stalling before the SUV accelerated. Faulty A/C: The Rogue's A/C system is prone to malfunction, causing it not to heat or cool the interior.

How many miles can a 2010 Nissan Rogue last?

Despite these major issues, the Rogue could still last drivers 200,000 miles or more, but normal longevity considerations like timely oil changes and other maintenance go out the window with the Rogue. Owners could do everything right and still see their Nissan SUVs fail at 95,000 miles due to poor manufacturing.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-08
  • VIN: JN8AS5MV3AW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I have a 2010 Nissan Rouge that is having powertrain issues, specifically the CVT, three times, after driving a long distance in very hot weather, and then going on a long uphill grade, the vehicle lost power. It dropped from 70 to about 40mph, this happened on two interstates along the same stretch and a third time on a California state highway. I did some research and found that this is a common problem with the Rogues powertrain's CVT over several years and there was also a class action lawsuit for some years of this Rogue, but not for a 2010. Nissan did pay for some repairs on other years to the lawsuit claimants.

SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-03
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT7AW
  • Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was driving the vehicle and stopped at a Sonic drive thru. I shifted the car into park and I began to hear a very loud creaking noise. When I shifted the car into drive, the car wouldn’t move. I called a Firestone mechanic and he concluded that it was the CV belt that is connected to the transmission. Regardless, only a transmission shop could handle this issue. I called CARMAX AUTO, and spoke with a JASON HEWITT. Mr Hewitt informed me that CarMax will have a tow truck come get the car. The following day, the car was towed by CarMax to Amaco for an official diagnostic. I was notified the following day that my vehicle had a damaged axle and appears to have been cause by a “car accident.” Mr Hewitt told me to file a claim in my insurance. I told Mr Hewitt that most likely the tow company damaged my axle. He stated he didnt know what exactly caused it but they will not be able to address the transmission issue until this axle and converter is paid for. Additionally, I’ve had the car for 14 months and 6 months into my lease agreement, the check engine light came and stayed on due the catalytic converter. The air and heat stopped working in September of 2023.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-21
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT7AW
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Subject: Urgent Mediation Request: Vehicle Purchase Issue Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction and concern regarding my recent vehicle purchase experience at K&O Auto Wholesale Inc, located at 8664 Phillips Highway, Jacksonville, FL 32256. On August 21st, at 5:22 pm, I purchased a vehicle from K & O Auto, having been assured by the salesperson Martin that the vehicle was in impeccable condition. This assertion was accompanied by the claim that the vehicle had recently arrived and undergone a thorough inspection. Initially, the test drive went smoothly, with no dashboard warnings detected. Consequently, I made the purchase for $6,400. However, my drive back to base revealed a slight exhaust noise and odor, though these issues seemed to dissipate momentarily. The following day, the engine light came on, accompanied by a strong exhaust odor. I promptly contacted your dealership, and I was instructed to bring the vehicle in after work for assessment and scheduling of a mechanic's appointment. This conversation was documented for reference. Upon arriving at the dealership, I was met with a starkly different response from Martin, the dealer. He abruptly informed me that the vehicle was sold "as is" and suggested buying a flush from Walmart or Autozone to remedy the issue. This abrupt about-face left me stunned, especially considering the initial assurances provided. It appears that the dealership may have misrepresented the vehicle's condition, manipulated the check engine light, and provided a misleading diagnosis. In light of these circumstances, I urgently seek mediation to swiftly resolve this matter. Given the transaction's integrity and the ethical considerations surrounding dealership practices, an equitable and timely resolution is crucial. I eagerly await your response. Thank you for your prompt attention. Sincerely,

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-28
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT5AW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The transmission/power train on this vehicle is experiencing common failures as reported by many owners. On my way to work, my Nissan Rogue began to stall and lose speed while on the highway. The speed decreased from 70 mph down to 50 mph. Approximately 5 minutes way from work, my vehicle barely accelerated through 4 way stop while making left turn which posed a high risk with on coming traffic headed in my direction I had my vehicle inspected by my ASE certified mechanic and was informed that my Rogue prompted transmission failure code. He (Dale Baca, Alternative Auto Care in Thornton, CO) also informed me that this was a recurring issue with my Nissan Rogue as well as other Nissans with the CVT transmission. No indication of failure or warning lamps was given on my dashboard on the day of July 28th, 2023.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-19
  • VIN: JN8AS5MV1AW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I live in Colorado and on one than more occasion I have been driving at elevation (crossing a mountain pass) and the vehicle loses any power to the gas - the pedal is literally on the floor but car loses speed. The last time this happened (this past May), I was trying to climb one of the passes, and my car would not go faster than 35mph, in an area with a minimum 60mph speed limit. I had to move into the shoulder so semi trucks could pass me. I can't believe this hasn't been a recall issue - if you Google this problem, you will find many Nissan owners (particularly early Rogue models) complaining of this exact issue. It is incredibly dangerous and if this is a mechanism of the vehicle (a heat or elevation issue), it should never have been sold in mountain or desert regions. Regardless, Nissan should be fixing this problem at no charge to the customer.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-11
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JN8AS5MTXAW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Vehicle was involved in crash on 4/11/2023. the vehicle left the right side of the road, driver overcorrected and lost control of vehicle and vehicle flipped 3 times before ending up on the roof, slid into an embankment on opposite side of the road which sent it airborne back into the highway. the vehicle is a complete loss, damage all the way around the car, all glass except drivers side window was busted out, front end was 60 yards down the road, motor mounts broke and motor moved, wheels broken, doors were moved and crushed in spots, roof and frame bent, etc. Driver lived thankfully. The major problem is that all the airbags deployed (curtain bags all the way around, both seat airbags) EXCEPT the steering wheel airbag and the passenger dash air bag. These are the 2 major airbags that should have deployed ina collision like this. I want Nissan to investigate why these did not employ.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-27
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT1AW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Safety put at risk due to horn not being able to work and the primary reason for this complaint is the engine. The car stopped accelerating, which was resolved, but then the car would no longer go in reverse!!! It is unknown why this has happened. We suspected the CVT prior to even learning of the CVT class action lawsuit. Please advise! Thank you for your time and consideration!

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-17
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT2AW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: While driving the vehicle at average highway speeds for over one hour approximately, the CVT transmission fluid overheats, and an engine code PO744 is set. This code is followed by reduction in engine power and speed limited to a safe mode of 25 mph. The danger of being rear-ended while attempting to safely exit the freeways here in California is high. This has happened multiple times on different roadways, uphill, downhill, and through the desert Nissan has many technical service bulletins, but no recalls. A CVT for this 2010 is $4000 or more, later models received a CVT fluid cooler, this year it's almost $1400 to install with no hopes the CVT will hold up.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-13
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT5AW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The Nissan Rogue is my 16 year old sons car. He was on a main road with his younger sister and a friend when he slowed down to turn a corner and as he pushed gas the car began to jerk violently then there was a bang and a click noise the car stayed running but was unable to accelerate he tried putting it in park and it started rolling away… 4 other bystanders had to help push the vehicle out of the way so a total of 7 people were pushing car off main road into a parking lot. Had someone look at it in that parking lot. It is something to do with the CVT transmission. Had to have it towed to my home to see if it can be repaired. Or if I wasted my money. Either way definitely have to get rid of it due to the danger. There was 3 teens in this car and they could have been seriously injured in this car when it broke down on a major street or when they were pushing it into a parking lot. By the grace of god my kids and their friend are safe. After this I would never buy another Nissan for the fact that I was terrified that they could’ve been seriously injured for a CVT transmission that has had numerous complaints and issues. It is definitely not safe for anyone, let alone a new teenage driver My son also told me that 2 weeks ago he was at a stop sign tried to accelerate when car would not move then it started jerking forward and finally drove normal. After that it could not be replicated until yesterday when it had incident on main road.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-21
  • VIN: JN8AS5MV3AW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The airbag light on the dash started flashing indication something has a malfunction and the light showing passenger airbag is off. The vehicle was taken to Larry Miller Nissan for a $176 diagnostic. They related the passenger sensor for the airbag had failed in the seat cushion and the airbag would not deploy in an accident to protect the passenger. They said $2,526.69 is the cost to fix the problem. This is obviously a safety issue and should be corrected by the manufacturer. This started approximately 10 days ago. The vehicle was taken in on the earliest date available. Is the manufacturer responsible for making sure the airbags function properly in the event of an accident? Thank you

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-14
  • VIN: JN8AS5MTXAW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 2010 Nissan Rogue SW pre-owned certified on 2/24/2012; Mileage: 13,403. Purchased SECURITY+PLUS service Warranty. The summer of 2014 Rogue started a whining noise going up hills or under a light load. There was no other indication from the vehicle that it was under distress, no warning lights appeared etc. Dealership mechanic test drove and confirmed the CVT was failing. 6/13/2014; Mileage 44228 per Warranty, installed: "1-Transaxle Assy; 1-Trans Exchange Expense; 5- NS-2 CVT TRANMI; 1Tranmission CO; 1 Cooler Kit-AUTO." "Certified concern, per Tech Line replaced CVT Transmission Assembly, Programmed TCM, Installed Transmission cooler, operates per design." The CVT was flushed and cleaned on 6/06/2018 at 78,882 by same dealership. Miles since new CVT was replaced 44228 - 78882 = 34654 June 24, 2021 upon returning from a trip the car was not shifting properly. At starting of an intersection the VOC light flashes and came on, and the car hardly would go across the intersection with the gas pedal pushed to floor. There were times gear shifting would rev and not shift smoothly. It was dangerous doing only 55mph in a 75 mph on I-10 returning. On July 22, 2021; Mileage 92762; took to dealership for digonostic; they reported: "caused by check codes and A/B counts no code present. Transmission has B counts recommend transmission replacement." "CVT Assembly $4890; front lower control arms if done at time of CVT $650 & drive belt $180.". And, of course, they informed me that the Warranty expired 1 year to the month. However,it is my understanding that 2010 Rogue were given an extended 10 year warranty/150k. My Warrenty book indicates differently. I believe Nissan's Warranty on my specific vehicle is misleading and needs reviewed. And may be considered fraudelant. A 2010 Nissan Rogue has less than 94,000 miles 1 CVT replaced prematurely now requiring another new CVT transmission replaced. North America Nissan denied asst beyond warranty

Negative 2010 Nissan Rogue car reviews

  1. Beau Kris 2024-07-28

The Nissan Rogue has been a reliable car for me, with a mileage of 18K. However, the AC has been a concern for me, especially during the hot summers in Texas. Despite this, I appreciate the CVT and the storage compartments in the doors and console. While the acceleration could be better, I am satisfied with the overall performance of the car. In my opinion, Nissan could improve the battery and tires in their cars. It would be great if manufacturers asked for feedback on their cars as well as the dealerships. Overall, I am confident in the quality and reliability of the Nissan Rogue.

  2. Percival Morissette 2024-07-11

My 2010 Rogue has been experiencing issues when driving uphill, causing a loss of power and preventing acceleration even when the pedal is fully pressed. After a full day of inspection at the local Nissan dealership, it was determined that the car's safety mechanism activates to prevent transmission overheating. While this is a valid safety feature, it is concerning when driving in high-speed traffic. I am confident that this issue will be resolved and that appropriate measures will be taken if necessary.

  3. Nasir Gutkowski 2024-06-10

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share that I bought my car last December and have driven about 8800 kilometers (in Canada). Today, I noticed that the 'Service Regine Soon' light is on. I haven't had a chance to take it to the dealership yet, but I'm a bit disappointed. After all, this is a brand new car - shouldn't it be more reliable? I decided to buy a new car so that I wouldn't have to deal with the hassle of going to garages, so I hope this issue can be resolved quickly. Thanks for listening!

  4. Jeramie Heidenreich 2024-05-23

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I was wondering if you could help me out. I recently purchased a vehicle from Metro Nissan in Montreal with 44kkm and a 4-year guarantee. Unfortunately, after only 2 months of driving, I've been experiencing a lot of issues with it. I was hoping to return it after a month or two, but unfortunately, it seems like it's too late to change it now. Do you have any advice on what I should do next?

  5. Mackenzie Ferry 2024-03-24

The fuel gauge is significantly inaccurate, as it does not register any movement until driving between 100 to 140 miles, and only moves two notches at 240 miles. Despite two attempts by Nissan to fix the issue, no improvements were made. However, according to the Nissan Fix Hotline, this is considered a normal condition and no further repairs can be made. As a result, the case has been forwarded to the NJ Lemon Law.

Positive 2010 Nissan Rogue car reviews

  1. Tatum Graham 2024-11-14

I've already reviewed this vehicle, but I wanted to write a follow-up. Since purchasing my Rogue S w/360 pkg in April, I've put 13,000 miles on it! I've loved driving every single mile! As an outside salesperson, I practically live in this car, driving through three states. It's very comfortable for long drives, and I can pile four suitcases of samples, along with various other binders and miscellany, all in the cargo area. This keeps my backseat clear of items, etc. The AWD is awesome in torrential rain! I felt very safe after a three-hour drive in that rain! Once you set your mirrors correctly, visibility is not that big of an issue. I love the smooth ride and its get-up-and-go! I absolutely adore this Rogue.

  2. Jermey Effertz 2024-11-04

I really like this car, but I have had a few issues with it. Sometimes it locks itself with me outside and without me pushing any lock, which can be frustrating. One time it even did this with the engine running and the key inside! It happened to me at around 8:45 p.m. while I was dropping off a book at my library's after-hours drop box. Additionally, the back-up visibility is not great, possibly due to the window size/placement. The backup lights are also quite dim, making it look like they are not turned on most of the time. Acceleration from the highway ramp onto the highway is not the best either. I think the backup camera could use some guidelines for reference. I noticed on your list of models that I didn't understand what CVT means. I bought the lowest priced model, and I found it strange that the rear view camera was only offered in this model. Personally, I would have preferred a sunroof instead of the camera since it does not have guide lines on the screen.

  3. Jasen Cartwright 2024-09-16

Before buying this car, I had the pleasure of driving a Nissan 350z 2006, Altima Coupe 2008, and 2009 Mercedes C300 Sports. As I am going to have a baby, I needed a car that would be more suitable for my growing family. When comparing the Rogue to these cars, here's what I found: The Rogue handles better than the C300, is equal to the Altima, and slightly lower than the 350z. The braking and acceleration are the same as the Altima. In terms of road comfort, the Rogue is below the C300 but above the Altima and 350z. As a Nissan, the Rogue has trademark quick acceleration and darn good braking. The interior is decent, but if you're expecting luxury, you might want to consider the Murano. In terms of fuel economy, the Rogue is better than the three cars I previously mentioned, getting around 24 mpg city (I haven't tested it on highways yet). Overall, the Rogue is a great fit for a starting family.

Great car! It looks and feels amazing. I can tell you that I did extensive research before purchasing this car. The Rav4 and the CRV were also on the top of my list. However, after driving them all, my wife and I both agree that the build quality of the Rogue was much better than the others. Unfortunately, the interior of the CR-V and the Rav4 feel very plastic-like. Another major motivation for choosing the Rogue was the warranties.

I purchased my 2010 S AWD Nissan Rogue with 38,000 miles from Hertz car rental for $15,500 in August 2011. After using it for 6 months, I wanted to share my thoughts on this car. I found this page helpful when choosing the Rogue, as I was looking for an SUV that was affordable and fuel-efficient. I considered other models such as the Sportage, Tucson, Forester, and Rogue. Having previously driven a Nissan Sentra, I was drawn to the Rogue's SUV look and feel, while still providing a car-like driving experience and safety. Living in the Northwest, this type of car is perfect for me. I didn't need a fancy ride or towing capabilities, so the city-like SUV Rogue was a great choice. Plus, it was priced $1,500-$2,000 less than the other models I considered.
