2024 Mazda Cx-5 problems
The Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV produced by Mazda since 2012. A successor to both the Tribute and the slightly larger CX-7, it is Mazda's first model to feature the "Kodo" design language and the first model to be fully developed with a range of technologies branded as Skyactiv, including a rigid, lightweight platform combined with a series of engines and transmissions to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.
Since 2019, the CX-5 is positioned above the smaller CX-30. As of 2022, depending on the region, the CX-5 is positioned right below the larger CX-50, CX-60 or the CX-8 within Mazda's crossover SUV line-up.
The CX-5 has been the worldwide best-selling model offered by the brand every year since 2014, with record sales in 2019 when 444,262 units were sold globally. As of March 2022, cumulative sales of the CX-5 has reached around 3.5 million vehicles.

Common 2024 Mazda Cx-5 problems
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 has been reported to have some common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the main issues is related to the engine, particularly in the turbo models.
In addition to oil consumption issues, there have been reports of cracked or warped cylinder heads and catastrophic failure of the cylinder deactivation system in the non-turbo models.
Another issue that has been reported is related to the infotainment system. Some owners have reported that the interface has a learning curve and is not as user-friendly as other systems on the market
. However, the system does support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which can help mitigate this issue
Finally, the CX-5 has been reported to have limited cargo space and lower fuel efficiency compared to its rivals, such as the CR-V, Sportage, and Rav 4, which also offer hybrid options
. This can be a significant drawback for buyers who need a vehicle with more space or better fuel economy.
Overall, while the 2024 Mazda CX-5 has been reported to have some common problems, most of these issues have been addressed for the current model year. However, potential buyers should still be aware of these issues and consider them when making their purchasing decision.
Are there any known problems in a Mazda CX-5?

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
- VIN: JM3KFBBM2R0
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: when you are driving in rainy weather on a highway the side view mirrors and windows fog up and you can't see. Putting on the defroster doesn't help. You have to drive with the windows open. On most cars if you open the windows the water would be evaporated from the rubber on the windows. The rubber is not thick enough on the front windows to do this. Bought it to a dealer and they said the same thing as far as the front windows are.
STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-28
- VIN: JM3KFBCL4R0
- Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I bought this car brand new with 51 miles on it on 7/24 and have taken it to the dealership mechanics twice for the same problem. Within 3 seconds of “letting go” of the steering wheel, the car veers and pulls directly into the right berm. The car requires continuous redirection of the steering wheel to get it to drive straight on. The dealership where I purchased this has not reported this defect to the manufacturer despite me requesting it. The car was inspected prior to me purchasing it, and upon me noticing that it veers off the road, I took it back to the dealership garage (on 7/31) and the mechanics reported that they had rebalanced and realigned the tires. The mechanics also told me they had realigned the front and rear axles and said that they had probably been affected by being strapped down tightly on the delivery truck (?). I picked up the car the same day (7/31) after they said they fixed it, and within 10 miles of leaving the dealership, I noticed that the car continued to pull me off the road to the right. I turned around and returned to the mechanics’ and requested they report this to the manufacturer. The car has remained at the dealership mechanic’s since 7/31. No warning lights or messages have ever shown on the car. I consider this a major safety hazard as the car is constantly and consistently veering either off the road into the berm, or into the right lane if attempting to pass.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-20
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JM3KFBCL8R0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Something malfunctioned with the brake system of the car. The car was in park and off. I exited the car, reached back into the car for an item, and shut the door. I then walked up the driveway and to the front door. At that point, the car began to roll down the driveway. Someone coming down the road in front of the driveway hit it on the front passenger side. The car then continued to roll across the street and part way up the driveway across the street, coming back across the street and then ran into the same car that hit it. I was then able to open the car door and get inside. It was still off and in park. I depressed the brake pedal, started the car, put it into drive, and moved it to the side of the street. After the incident, I tried multiple times to replicate the incident with my car. I tried leaving it in reverse, even though I know it was off and parked. I also tried leaving it in neutral and turning it off, even though I know it was off and in park. Each time, the car began to roll immediately. There was no way that I could have done what I did that day, which was to step out, reach back in to get a bag, shut the door, and then walk away. The car was definitely off and parked when it happened. The vehicle is currently at a Mazda authorized repair shop, and I am awaiting the final word on whether or not they can detect what exactly caused the brakes to malfunction. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the issue; however, I did notice that something seemed to be going on with the screen of the car prior to the incident. though the clock was set to the correct time, the screens auto-sensor for day and night mode was not functioning correctly. (When it got dark, the screen was still staying lit up brightly. I confirmed that it was on "auto" mode, and it should have dimmed since it was after 9:30pm and dark out, but it didn't. I had to manually switch it to "night" each time it was dark.)
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
- VIN: JM3KFBCL6R0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The most recent incident: Driving 35 MPH on a 4 lane divided boulevard, vehicle 5-6 car lengths in front of me indicates intention to turn right. No traffic in lane to my left should I need to change lanes. I continue to coast. At approximately 2-3 car lengths, the vehicle in front has nearly completed the right turn - there is no risk of collision - but my car BRAKES HARD. This is the 4th time my car has activated emegency braking in a situation it is not warranted. I have been dirving for 36 years with no accident. I do not need nor want this technology as it is more prone to causing accidents than preventing them. Additionally, the car throttle response is slow to recover in these situations, so while I mashed the acclerator to the floor to avoid being rear-ended - the car did not accelerate for 1-2 seconds (RPM went up, but the engine did not engage for several seconds). In situations where AEB might have been marginally helpful, detecting cross traffic running red lights, the car has NEVER detected this - and thankfully I'm an experienced driver so AEB was not needed. This technology, IMO, is not safe and will lead to over-reliance causing more accidents in the future.
POWER TRAIN,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-29
- VIN: JM3KFBBLXR0
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SEATS
- Summary: Since the day we purchased our new 2024 Mazda CX-5, two issues have become apparent. Firstly, there is a clicking noise emanating from the rear passenger seats behind the driver whenever the vehicle is in motion. Secondly, there is a noticeable rumbling in the drivetrain during idle or stop-and-go traffic. I have visited the Mazda showroom twice regarding the seat back noise. Together with a Mazda technician, we determined that the rear passenger seat indeed makes a clicking noise even after being properly latched. We tested several new cars on the dealer lot and found that all of them exhibit this noise. It is quite bothersome while driving, and I request Mazda's immediate attention to resolve this issue by fixing the latch bracket to securely hold the seat and eliminate the noise. The drivetrain rumbling has become increasingly noticeable as I use the car daily for work and errands. It feels like the vehicle is being shaken underneath me when stopped at a red light, stop sign, or while parked and idling. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in addressing these concerns at your earliest convenience
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-29
- VIN: JM3KFBCL7R0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I had coplained about a long, soft brake pedal on 10 February 2024 to Hiley Fort Worth Motorcars and got a report on 13 February 2024 stated that after inspection, they could not duplicate my complaint, so they did a visual inspection and washed the car!!!! Today, 29 May 2024, I had to make an emergency stop and pressed the brake pedal to the floor! The ABS came on, but the brake pedal should never reach the floor. The other car had stopped and I swerved out of the way. No warning lights came on nor sounds. Additional information; if the brakes are applied by the adaptive cruise control, and you step on the brake pedal after the brakes have been applied automatically, the brake pedal is nice and firm, like it should be. But if there is no intervention with the car, the brake pedal is very long and soft.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-10
- VIN: JM3KFBEM3R0
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: My drivers door locked from the inside the other day and would not open. It had to be opened from the outside.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-31
- VIN: JM3KFBCMXR0
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I have a 2024 Mazda CX-5 but this is in any model and year that has the Adaptive Radar Cruise Control. When you set the distance you want to follow the vehicle in front of you, you will go the speed you are going until you come to the space you have set for the vehicle in front of you. Your vehicle will slow to match that vehicles speed. If that vehicle slows down, you will slow down. What it doesn't do it turn on your brake lights so the vehicle behind you knows that your vehicle is slowing down. Sometimes if the vehicle in front of you slows down fast, so does your vehicle. You have no control how fast it does that, it just does it. Now if the vehicle behind you doesn't realize that your vehicle has done this, well it has been very close two times so far. I do not want my new car rear ended. I did not know it did this with the brake lights and Mazda doesn't tell you that you have no brake lights when this happens. Why would they have a setup like this. It is like brake checking the vehicle behind you. I do not use my cruise control for that reason. It would be nice to be able to use it on a new car but I do not want to get hurt or get someone else hurt by doing so. I did contact Mazda and they know it does that. This is what they told me "Case Number [XXX] Hello. My name is Dominique. I am sorry that you have had some very close calls while slowing down while vehicles were behind you. As for the question you had asked about cruise control activating the brakes when your vehicle starts to slow down, it does not activate the brake lights. It is just like when you are driving without cruise control and you go to take your foot off of the gas pedal instead of using the brake to slow down, it would not activate brake lights either unless you actually mash the brakes, the same with cruise control. Thank you for being a part of the Mazda family. " Isn't that great. I am now a safely hazard or at least my vehicle is, and they are all like that. Who knew. Not me. All Japanese made! I'm so glad you love the vehicle all the way around! While it could have more back seat legroom, it's great to hear that it's not a big issue for you and your wife since you usually don't have people in the back seat. Thank you for sharing your positive experience! ❤️

When you realize a sedan is not an option anymore, an SUV can be a great alternative! This CX-5 is performing admirably. And for the price, you'll feel like you got away with a steal!
-
At first, the many new features can be overwhelming, but once we get used to them, they are incredibly helpful. I have found that the CX-5 is my preferred car choice because it fits people comfortably and has a spacious cargo area for carrying shopping and other items. Additionally, it is highly reliable, easy to maintain, and a pleasure to drive.

The ride in my CX 5 Turbo is fantastic! I absolutely love it more every day. Mazda truly puts out an amazing product. No regrets at all!

Trading my Honda CRV (which was noisy and felt every bump on the road) for this CX5 is the best decision I've ever made. I am very happy with my CX5 and have had no problems.

The soul red colour of this car is absolutely stunning, and the interior and exterior are both real eye-catchers. The engine is quite responsive and has a good amount of get-up-and-go. For the total price of 34k (preferred trim), the leather seats are awesome, and I'm thrilled that I managed to get the 16-inch wheels in a higher trim level because they come with thicker tires, which translates to better ride comfort. The independent suspension is sublime, although the brakes can be a bit mushy. I've been driving this car for 9 months now and I'm still getting used to them. There's also this weird jerk that happens when coming to a stop from 45mph, which can be a bit annoying. I've brought it to a Mazda dealership, but the engineers just put their arms up like they don't see it and later claimed it was normal. I've driven over 9 different cars, including manuals, CVTs, and traditional automatics, and none of them did that. Even the 2016 Scion iA (auto) with the supposed same 6-speed didn't do it either. The 2013 Mazda CX9 didn't either... in fact, none of the cars I've driven or ridden in did that. I'm totally baffled, and no one seems to have a fix. All the Mazda dealerships have cancerous locations that only have high traffic 50 mph roads or semi-busy 30 mph roads, making braking from 45 a total nightmare, which is mainly when the problem happens. I hope Mazda can find a solution to this issue soon. Thank you for considering my feedback.

I am not satisfied with my car. Although I have had it for just over a month, I would prefer to return it. The technology is outdated and lacks features that I am accustomed to, such as Bluetooth, touchscreen, and remote start on the keyfob. Instead of a touchscreen, there is a little turn dial knob from the eighties that you have to use to switch between functions. The remote start is on an app and takes at least a minute or two to work, even if you are standing right by the car. I wish the remote start was on the key fob. Additionally, the reminder to put on your seat belt is quite loud and gives me a headache. This vehicle does not have Bluetooth, which I find surprising since I believe all vehicles should have wireless charging and Bluetooth as standard features. If you are looking for a vehicle with a full touchscreen, Bluetooth, and a remote start that you can hold in your hand, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

The CX-5 is a mid-size SUV that offers a comfortable and upright seating position, which is ideal for those with lower back issues. The car has some luxury details and handles nicely. However, the engine and ride could be improved to provide a more solid feel. The cabin layout could also be more spacious and less cramped. The addition of touchscreen ability for Carplay is a nice feature, but it could be more user-friendly. Overall, the car has a mix of features that could be improved to provide a more cohesive identity. While some may find the car to be fuel inefficient, it still offers a comfortable and enjoyable ride. It is important to note that everyone's experience with a car is subjective and may vary.

I am confident in my assessment that this car does not meet my expectations. While I based my buying decision on reviews from reputable sources such as Edmunds and Car and Driver, I have found that the gas mileage is not as good as my previous car and the car struggles when going uphill. The leather seats are prone to showing fingerprints and the material covering the dashboard is difficult to clean. Additionally, the technology is not user-friendly and the manual is confusing. The lack of a touch screen and the need to navigate through multiple options using a dial while driving is a safety concern. The remote start feature is only available through a phone app with a monthly fee after four years, which I find unreasonable. The car's automatic locking feature is also unreliable. Furthermore, the placement of the USB port in the console is inconvenient. Overall, I regret my decision to purchase this car and would have preferred to keep my previous car with a CVT transmission.

I've been driving the CX-5 (red) for 2 months now. While there are a few things that could be improved, overall it's been a decent experience. The paint and carpet in the cabin could be better quality, but it's not a deal breaker. I've noticed some chipping on the paint, but it's nothing major. The carpet is a bit difficult to clean, but it's not a big issue. The entertainment controls could be more user-friendly, and the auto-sensing rain wipers could use some improvement. The climate controls are a bit quirky, but they get the job done. The undercarriage and parts of the wheel well have felt material, which can hold moisture, but it's not a major concern. The engine can be a bit noisy when it first starts, but it's not a major issue. Overall, I'm satisfied with my purchase, but if I had to do it all over again, I might consider a Subaru or Toyota.
