nissan logo

The Nissan Juke (Japanese: 日産・ジューク, Hepburn: Nissan Jūku) is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) produced by the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan since 2010. Debuted as a production vehicle at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March, it was introduced to North America at the 2010 New York International Auto Show to be sold for the 2011 model year, and it currently slots below the compact Qashqai.

The second-generation model was revealed for the European market in September 2019, offering larger dimensions by utilising the newer Renault–Nissan CMF-B platform. The second generation marks the withdrawal of the model from most markets outside Europe and Australasia to make way for the Nissan Kicks.

The name "juke" means to "dance or change directions demonstrating agility", and is also derived from the word "jukebox".

Common 2011 Nissan Juke problems

The Nissan Juke, a compact crossover SUV, has been in production since 2010. While it has gained popularity due to its quirky style and compact functionality, certain model years have been plagued with reliability issues. One of the most problematic iterations is the 2011 Nissan Juke, which has received a significant number of owner complaints.

One major issue with the 2011 Nissan Juke is the failure of the turbo, which can occur around an average of 89k mileage. This problem can lead to a terrifying noise from the car, as reported by a California owner who experienced the issue at 57,000 miles. The repair cost for this issue is estimated to be around $2,840.

Another concern for the 2011 Juke is the engine issues, including oil leaks and outright failure. Some owners have reported experiencing both engine and turbo failure at 90k miles. These issues can be costly to repair, with one owner quoted $6,000 for repairs after noticing the car burning oil for years and reporting it to the dealership with no action taken until the engine locked up.

The 2011 Nissan Juke has also been subject to seven recalls, with potential faults ranging from possible fuel leaks to oxygen sensor problems. It's essential to check that any car you're interested in buying has had the necessary work carried out.

In addition to the 2011 model, the 2012 Nissan Juke also has its fair share of issues. The top problem of this model relates to electrical problems that prevent the engine from turning over. With 16 written complaints, owners have complained about the vehicle refusing to start randomly, particularly after the vehicle has sat for several days.

The 2012 Juke also struggled with transmission-related issues, including grinding noises and blown transmission. An owner experienced a loud rumbling noise and fluctuating revs while driving their 2012 Nissan Juke, which required replacement of the failed automatic transmission (CVT).

Lastly, the 2012 Juke had engine issues, particularly with the engine timing belt. Out of 148 NHTSA complaints, engine issues were the most common problem reported.

When purchasing a used Nissan Juke, it's crucial to have a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic or specialist who can identify any potential issues with the car. Additionally, obtaining a vehicle history report can help check for any past accidents or maintenance issues

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-09
  • VIN: JN8AF5MV9BT
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The timing chain rattled, wearing a hole in the timing cover causing oil leak. After driving my car and parking it, all of the oil leaked out on to the ground. When trying to drive the car, even before the oil leak, the car would completely shut off whenever I would slow down, including in the middle of intersections. After taking it to a mechanic, they told me that the timing chain had worn a hole in the timing cover, and a Nissan dealership service shop told me that I would need to get the engine replaced. Even before all of the oil leaked out, I was put in great danger not knowing when my car would shut off when driving it and slowing down. At one point, the service engine soon light came on, but it went away and the car drove like normal for a period before the oil leaked out. I was never informed about any recalls or service notices when I bought the car or when getting it routinely serviced.

Negative 2011 Nissan Juke car reviews

  1. Emilio Kihn 2024-11-20

I have owned several Nissan trucks and have always found them to be a solid brand. My oldest son's 09 Altima has well over 150,000 miles and has had no issues. When I bought one of the first Titans made, it did have some issues, but nothing I couldn't fix myself. I don't usually complain much, I just handle problems as they come up. When my wife wanted a Juke, I trusted the Nissan brand and didn't do as much research as I should have. Unfortunately, the motor on the one she bought turned out to be total garbage. If you are considering buying one, I would recommend watching videos on Juke timing chains. Our engine was replaced due to a recall before 36,000 miles, but they never fixed the factory defect. No mechanic in Middle Tennessee will do an engine repair on one. After calling everyone I know and 20+ others, the best quote I received was $5200 to put in a new engine. I am selling it to a parts dealer because I don't want to make it somebody else's problem. Now when I see a Juke on the road, I always listen. They all have the rattling timing chain rubbing on the cover. It seems like Nissan would make more money selling replacement engines with a properly rated timing chain, but I can't find one. I would advise against buying a Juke. Just don't.

  2. Arch Cummerata 2024-10-02

The car is definitely fun to drive, but unfortunately, like many other reviews, it doesn't get the gas mileage it should. The 11-gallon gas tank is also quite disappointing. However, I have found that I can get up to 26 mpg on the highway if I drive carefully - meaning no quick accelerations, not going over 65, and using ECO mode. If you need to pass someone and hit the gas, you will get around 23 mpg. It's worth noting that I use 91 octane fuel. I have also noticed that the electronic gas mileage estimate is not always accurate. If you calculate the mileage by dividing the total mileage by the number of gallons used, you will get better numbers. For example, the car states 22.8 mpg, but I am actually getting 23.4 mpg. Additionally, the interior has a lot of plastic, the seats are quite stiff, and there is no armrest, which is a bit inconvenient.

  3. Rylan Bogisich 2024-08-12

Hi there! I have a 2011 Nissan Juke with 37k miles. Unfortunately, I heard a ticking noise coming from the engine, so I took it to the dealership this morning. I called them back this afternoon to find out the diagnosis, but all they said was that there is a noise coming from the motor, so they need all my maintenance records before they can touch it. I was a bit disappointed because I dropped it off and was told they would diagnose the problem and call me, but I didn't hear back from them until 7 hours later. When I called, they told me that if I wanted them to break down the motor, then I would owe them a huge bill. I asked the technician what was wrong with the Juke, and he said it sounds like the timing chain, but they are not wanting to fix the problem. Do you have any suggestions out there? Thanks!

The Nissan Juke has a known issue with the timing belt snapping shortly after the warranty ends, which can result in costly repairs. However, it is important to note that this issue is not unique to your experience and is happening to many owners across the country. It is recommended to conduct thorough research before making a purchase. In the event of any issues, Nissan should be held accountable for their product and design. Seeking legal assistance may be necessary to resolve the matter.

I purchased my 2011 Juke used almost two years ago. I had the timing chain replaced through a recall, and I must say, I love the way it feels when driving. It's quite responsive! However, I do agree that the back seat is too compact for comfortable long-term travel, so if you have a growing family, this may not be the best option for you. I do wish there was more cargo space, but I'm used to driving full-sized pickup trucks, and this is my first foray into small cars. Living in the northeast, I have noticed that the door locks are not always responsive. Sometimes, I can't open the door after shutting the car down because it won't automatically unlock as it should. The same goes for locking it from outside; it doesn't always lock when it should. My husband has taken it to work during snowstorms (he drives 38 miles one way) and exclaimed that with studded tires, my 'bionic frog' would be a tank. He was surprisingly pleased with the AWD and the way it stayed on the roads in bad weather, but had concerns about its winter performance on secondary roads. My average MPG is around 24, which is a bit disappointing since I was told the MPG would be much higher, and that was a main reason I bought it. However, I do like the styling, but then again, I've been told I have a quirky personality. Everyone that knows me thinks the styling is a perfect fit for me. Unfortunately, I have had the tailpipe come off, and of course, it was not warrantied. The upholstery is already fading and showing wear, even though I don't use it for more than going to/from work and running errands. I don't take it on rough roads since the trim on the sides will come unbolted and is difficult to get back together. Again, it's supposedly a compact SUV, so the roads I took it on should not have been an issue. I guess I feel like I paid too much for what I have, so I will be trading it when I'm not so underwater with the payments.

What a distinctive little mover! As someone who is 55+ years old, I was looking for a small and economical car that could handle the I95 corridor. And boy, does the Juke TURBO deliver! I feel confident merging onto highways, navigating winding back roads, and even tackling the Cross-Bronx in this tight, agile car. But don't worry, I'm not the guy doing 1100 miles an hour in the left lane - I'm just looking for a safe and fun driving experience. The car is relatively comfortable too. Although I'm curious to see how it handles in the snow. Overall, I'm thrilled with my purchase - it's exactly what I was looking for!

You're in for a treat with the Juke! I've owned quite a few cars in my years, and I must say, the Juke is near the top in build quality. It's built economically but extremely well, and Nissan has really outdone themselves with the quality and design, especially when compared to Toyota and Honda. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and value of my son's 2010 Rogue, and the Juke is no exception. It's such a fun car to drive daily - fast, smooth, and thrilling. I've even managed to get 31 mpg on the highway (going 55-60)! I highly recommend this vehicle - you won't be disappointed!

We were originally looking for a SV model, but unfortunately, we couldn't find one without many add-ons. Instead, we ended up purchasing a Juke S FWD with a spoiler, which I think adds to the overall look. We decided to trade my wife's car, a Vibe, because she finds the frog look attractive. Since we mostly drive in the city, we both appreciate the quick and easy maneuverability of this car, especially when it comes to finding small parking spaces. The construction is solid, and the ride is smooth. We also find the quiet interior enhances the sound system. Although the storage space in the back is not as large as the Vibe, we find it sufficient for our gym gear and groceries. Overall, we are very happy with our purchase.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my new car so far. While there have been a few concerns, such as gas mileage averaging 23mpg (lower than advertised), and a cargo rattle that I took to the dealer today, I'm remaining optimistic. The gas gauge dropped to zero and the check engine light came on, but the vehicle is now with the dealer and I'm curious to see how they handle it. Despite these bumps in the road, I'm still having fun driving the car. As a major airline pilot, I tend to focus on the technical side of things, but I'll be sure to provide feedback on how this turns out. Thanks for listening!

Best AWD compact for the price! I'm so glad I traded in my 07 Pathfinder SE for the Juke SL AWD, I already love it more! Plus, I'm already getting 30+mpg in this fun-to-drive vehicle.
