2017 Nissan Altima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Altima is a mid-size car manufactured by Nissan since 1992. It is a continuation of the Nissan Bluebird line, which began in 1955.

The Altima has historically been larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less so than the Nissan Maxima. The first through fourth-generation cars were manufactured exclusively in the United States and officially sold in North and South America, along with the Middle East and Australia. For other markets, Nissan sold a related mid-size sedan called the Nissan Teana which was between the Altima and Maxima in terms of size. In 2013, the Teana became a rebadged version of the fifth-generation Altima.

The name "Altima" was originally applied to a top trim line of the Nissan Leopard for the Japanese market in 1986, and then to the Nissan Laurel mid-size car sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1992, Nissan discontinued the Stanza which was a Nissan Bluebird clone, replacing it with the US-built Altima, while remaining a compact car. The first Altima was produced in June 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altima models for the North American market were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant also began producing the model to meet high demand.

Common 2017 Nissan Altima problems

The 2017 Nissan Altima has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners:

  • Engine Problems:
While not as frequent as transmission issues, engine problems in the 2017 Altima can be severe, leading to stalling, power loss, and complete shutdown. These symptoms are more severe compared to similar models, requiring a comprehensive inspection by a mechanic and a detailed test drive to detect any potential engine issues.
  • Electrical Issues:
Various electrical problems have been reported, ranging from fires to malfunctions in windows and door locks. Some of these issues have even resulted in accidents and property damage. To avoid electrical problems, it is advised to have a mechanic inspect the engine compartment for fire damage and thoroughly test all electrical components to ensure proper functioning.

These common problems with the 2017 Nissan Altima highlight the importance of thorough inspections and test drives when considering purchasing a used vehicle to avoid potential costly repairs and safety hazards.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 1N4AL3APXHC
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Hello, I have a 2017 Nissan Altima, VIN# 1N4AL3APXHC185845 and a few years ago there was a safety recall on the headlight system. The lights are very dim, they will not get bright after changing the bulbs multiple times and still not a fix. The lights are very dim at night and very hard to see. I tried scheduling an appointment and the Nissan dealership says this recall expired. My 21 year old daughter is driving the car and she keeps asking me that she cannot see with the lights on and working fine. Multiple times she has almost hit something close to the side of the road or another parked car because the lights are so dim but working fine. How can a safety recall expire, if an accident happens and Nissan refused to fix the safety issue and had a recall then Nissan Corporation may be liable for any injuries due to this accident. I just want to get the headlights fixed according to the safety recall but every time I call, it gets disconnected or I cannot get thru to anyone and they just keep me on hold.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 1N4AL3AP5HC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The airbag light turns on whenever someone else drives the car and moves the driver seat. The light stays on until we clear the code and then starts over again when someone moves the seat. The airbag code said that there was a problem with the sensor in the driver seat and the airbag may not deploy. The dealer wants more than $3,000 to fix this problem but I believe it is a manufacturer defect that affects safety and there should be a recall. I have read that there are many other drivers of 2017 Altimas who are having the exact same problem as I am having.

  • VIN: 1N4AL3AP4HC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: After coming to a complete stop at a stop light, the car fails to accelerate into the intersection. Its hesitation leaves you vulnerable in the intersection and could cause a head on collision or even a T-Bone accident. I feel like driving this vehicle puts the lives of my family at risk. After reading all the very similar complaints I don't understand how Nissan hasn't issued a recall yet. Nissan is leaving themselves open to a wrongful death lawsuit. How can they let this issue continue unresolved?

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • VIN: 1N4BL3AP3HC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: My passenger occupancy sensor has triggered an airbag off warning light. I took it to a Nissan dealer who told me a part needed to fix it (the module) is back ordered from Japan with an indefinite delivery date. My car as you can tell a 2017 Altima. The 2013-2016 Altimas were recalled for this same problem as well as the 2017 Maximas. I do believe that the occupancy sensor was defective from the manufacturer and should be recalled and that my car's value has been diminished because of this flaw. I am asked to pay for the part in advance not knowing when they will receive it. I cannot have anyone sit in the passenger seat of my car for fear the airbag will not deploy. Please help.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-15
  • VIN: 1N4AL3AP5HN
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: 2017 Nissan Altima. First time it happened was November 2023. Air bag warning light came on and when reset it stayed off till August of 2024. Another reset and a few days later the light was right back on. Nissan has not been helpful with this problem to find a solution to this problem without big price tag. They want to replace the seat, other components etc. that will cost over $3,000. Other owners are complaining of this as well. Recall only goes up to 2016 models however I feel that the 2017 models probably have the 2016 parts. Time for Nissan to do a recall for this model as well.

If there was a vehicle coming in the other direction, there could have been a fatality.

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
  • VIN: 1N4AL3APXHC
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: In November 2023 vehicle had an airbag warning light, took to Nissan Dealer. Inspected by Nissan service. Diagnostic and "repair" performed on driver side airbag. 8 months later in mid July -SAME airbag warning light came on. Needed an oil change in a few weeks and was not driving the vehicle due to out of town vacation. Took Vehicle to the same Nissan Dealership on 8/5/2024. Nissan again inspected and we were again charged for a diagnostic and told needed to fix by replacing the entire seat for $3000. When we asked the service manager why it wasn't fixed he stated perhaps the service in 2023 caused "corrosion" or a faulty airbag or faulty electrical. This is an internal issue inside the seat. Dealership would not help fix. Called Nissan Corporate and filed a case. This vehicle has never had any accidents or damage. Half of the national average of mileage. Meticulously cared for and taken only to Nissan for oil changes. Never touched the seat . After owning this vehicle for less than 7 years it has 45,142 miles . Filed a report with BBB a week ago and have not had any response. Was hoping in good faith Nissan would do the honorable thing and replace this seat as this is our family car. We take our children. to school in it. Go to church in it. Drive to family for get together in it. Now we are worried that the airbag may randomly deploy, or not deploy at all. It is a huge safety concern. We are worried that there may be other 2017 Nissans out there with similar issues. And we cannot sell , as we would never want to put another family at risk . Bottom line , Nissan is being negligent. There is a vehicle that clearly has faulty manufacturing / parts - and they do not wish to do the right thing. We do not feel we should be responsible for something that is not our fault. We hope this can be investigated, as this is an extremely popular vehicle - and there may be many more families at risk. Thank you

AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-10
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1N4AL3AP3HC
  • Components: AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I left for work, acceleration at slow speed around 30 mph within 40 seconds, the car began to gain speed, I let off the gas pedal, still accelerated. I tried slowly using brakes to slow down - no response. At this point, I notice that cruise control light, was lit up, on the dashboard but not set. I'm now gaining speed of 72 MPH. Not even 1 mile, from turn off. I literally fish tailed three times, then the car slowed down and I ended up sideways, in a ditch. Chipped hubcap and some plastic piece hanging, from underneath the car. I had a bystander, whom was headed towards me - stop in fear of what happened. Got the car out of ditch. I parked, checked for leaks, nothing. Since this incident, I'm in fear of this happening again. I'm assumption was the accelerator stuck. No brakes is dangerous, let alone feeling like my life was gonna end. I cried. Thinking Jesus my children were home. I have noticed that both airbag "warning" signs have displayed and won't go off. I would hate to have or hear of a fatality, from this. Please look into other reports. I felt like I couldn't even explain this bizarre, unlikely/impossible event to happen but it did.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
  • VIN: 1N4AL3AP2HC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The airbag warning light began going off October/November 2023 and was intermittent at first and became constantly on. I took it to the dealership in December of 2023 and they said that the airbag sensor plug had become disconnected under the front passenger seat, they said they reconnected it and the warning light was out. It was also stated that this is a common issue when items get under the front passenger seat. In May 2024, the airbag warning light again started to come on intermittently and then became consistently on. Took the car back to the same dealership which diagnosed the fault as an airbag sending unit in the passenger seat. The dealership stated that there was no way to tell if the airbag would operate as intended. The repair would require a new seat as Nissan does not make a replacement airbag unit and would cost $2800. If this, by the dealership's own statement, is a common problem with an important safety feature it would seem that Nissan should be responsable for making any vehicle affected safe.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-01
  • VIN: 1N4AL3APXHC
  • Components: STRUCTURE

The contact stated that on two separate occasions, the center light console located on the roof in between the front driver and passenger seat had fallen off while driving at various speeds. After the initial failure, the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the console was repaired free of charge. The contact stated that almost two years after the initial failure, the same failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the contact was provided an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed the contact that there were no recalls or warranties on the vehicle. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline to file a complaint. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

  • Summary: my transmission went bad at 80,000 miles it is a 4 cylinder cvt and my car shudders when shifting and at random times when i press on the gas from a stop the car slowly rolls forward. my safety is at risk because if it happens when I'm turning onto a road or major road it can cause me to get hit because the accelerator doesn't work at random times. it is because my transmission is slipping. But i don't understand why because i have taken great care of my Nissan Altima. this issue needs to be fixed with Nissan before someone gets seriously injured or killed. the least Nissan could do is help pay for a new transmission.

2017 Nissan Altima recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2017 Nissan Altima.

2020-05-28
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2018 Nissan Altima vehicles. If the primary hood latch is inadvertently released, there is an increased likelihood that the secondary hood latch may corrode over time.
  • Consequence: Corrosion to the secondary latch may cause it to bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed. If the primary latch is inadvertently released again and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a stronger release spring in the hood release lever, a warning label near the secondary hood latch, and an Owner’s Manual addendum card with instructions on how to lubricate and maintain the secondary hood latch mechanism, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 30, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: Recall 16V-029 remains open for any unremedied 2013-2015 Altimas and this recall applies to all vehicles covered by 16V-029 even if those repairs have already been performed.
2018-12-19
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: STRUCTURE:EMERGENCY:ESCAPE/EGRESS/EXIT
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Altima vehicles, previously remedied under recall number 17V-040. The door latch-lock cable may not have been routed properly in the rear door when the remedy was applied. As a result, the cable may interfere with the window regulator causing the rear passenger door to unlatch and inadvertently open without warning when the window is lowered.
  • Consequence: If the rear passenger door opens while the vehicle is moving, the rear passengers have an increased risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will secure the latch-lock cables in the correct position using the new remedy procedure, free of charge. The recall began February 5, 2019. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7669.

  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Altima vehicles. The rear door latch/lock cable on the vehicles may have been improperly routed. As a result, lowering a rear window may inadvertently cause that door to unlatch and open.
  • Consequence: If the rear passenger doors inadvertently open while the vehicle is in motion, it may increase the risk of injury to the rear passengers.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will correct the rear door latch/lock cable routing, free of charge. The recall began on February 16, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Negative 2017 Nissan Altima car reviews

  1. Aric Considine 2024-09-15

At first, everything seemed fine, but after a year, things started to fall apart. I would recommend doing some research on Altimas or even Infinitis. There have been some class action lawsuits aimed at getting Nissan to address some issues with their cars. It's a shame that some of their products have not lived up to expectations.

  3. Mason Kerluke 2024-07-10

The transmission of this car broke down at 65k, causing sudden acceleration and braking without warning on a highway, nearly resulting in a rear-end collision. It is my professional opinion that this car poses a significant safety risk and should not be driven. I strongly advise against purchasing this vehicle, as it could endanger the lives of you and your loved ones. As an expert in the field, I can confidently say that this Nissan model is not up to the standards of safety and reliability that consumers deserve.

  4. Jamie Hegmann 2024-07-05

Although I have experienced some issues with my current car, I am confident in my assessment that it is not up to the standard of my previous Nissan. Specifically, the brake light switch has been a recurring problem that has caused significant inconvenience. In contrast, my previous Nissan was highly reliable and required minimal maintenance.

  5. Brendon Reichel 2024-06-22

I bought my car brand new and unfortunately, it has been giving me a lot of trouble since then. The car has not held its value and the brakes have been squeaking a lot. I have had to replace them three times in just one year. I am disappointed with my experience and will not be purchasing another Altima in the future.

Positive 2017 Nissan Altima car reviews

  1. Marley Gerlach 2024-11-14

Nissan is a fantastic car with a powerful engine.

  2. Norbert Nader 2024-11-05

A 2017 Altima LS just purchased is an excellent driving and riding car. It's loaded with everything!

  3. Mervin Strosin 2024-11-01

Great comfortable ride! I love it for what I needed. If you're looking for more bells and whistles, then the SV and other models might be a better fit for you.

  4. Savion Schuster 2024-10-17

I really love my 2017 Nissan Altima! However, I have been experiencing some trouble with the center Nissan caps on the tires. Unfortunately, I have had to replace two already and now another one is missing. These caps are quite expensive and I would prefer not to keep replacing them, nor do I want my car to be missing one. I was hoping the company would be able to offer some assistance, but they have not been willing to absorb any of the cost or provide a discount. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  5. Joan Jones 2024-09-03

The Altima is the best choice in its class, offering the most of what I was looking for. Although there are some features that were left out, such as seat memory, lane departure, and key recognition when opening doors, it still has fantastic safety features like adaptive cruise. The entertainment and navigation systems work very well, and the trunk has ample room. I am averaging about 35 MPG, which is about average for this Altima. Overall, I am confident in my decision to choose the Altima over other vehicles in its class. The 2017 Altima SL is a great ride, with a radio receiver, CD player, and Bluetooth functions that work exceptionally well. While it would have been nice to have an additional USB port for charging, the existing USB port is perfect for music streaming and phone extension via Bluetooth. Overall, Nissan has done an excellent job with the 2017 Altima SL, with only a few minor areas for improvement.
