2021 Nissan Altima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Altima is a mid-size car manufactured by Nissan since 1992. It is a continuation of the Nissan Bluebird line, which began in 1955.

The Altima has historically been larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less so than the Nissan Maxima. The first through fourth-generation cars were manufactured exclusively in the United States and officially sold in North and South America, along with the Middle East and Australia. For other markets, Nissan sold a related mid-size sedan called the Nissan Teana which was between the Altima and Maxima in terms of size. In 2013, the Teana became a rebadged version of the fifth-generation Altima.

The name "Altima" was originally applied to a top trim line of the Nissan Leopard for the Japanese market in 1986, and then to the Nissan Laurel mid-size car sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1992, Nissan discontinued the Stanza which was a Nissan Bluebird clone, replacing it with the US-built Altima, while remaining a compact car. The first Altima was produced in June 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altima models for the North American market were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant also began producing the model to meet high demand.

Common 2021 Nissan Altima problems

The 2021 Nissan Altima has been reported to have several common problems, including premature brake wear, unresponsive steering, and a dead battery.

Premature brake wear is the most widespread complaint from 2021 Nissan Altima owners in the first 10,000 miles. The front brakes, in particular, tend to wear out quickly. Replacing the brake pads costs around $120, while a new set of rotors is an additional $150. There are some aftermarket brake pads which cost $150, and tend to last much longer.

Unresponsive steering is another issue reported by 2021 Altima owners at around 15,000 miles. The electronic power steering simply needs to be reset usually, which will allow it to reset and become more responsive. Usually, this can be done for under $50, depending on local labor rates.

A dead battery also shows up on some Altima models in the first 5,000 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories in the Altima which sometimes drain the battery while the car is off. Diagnosing the source of the problem costs around $50, while fixing the issue can cost $20 to $100.

The 2021 Nissan Altima has a recall covering a tie rod ball joint fastener which was not properly installed. Nissan will adjust and reinstall the fastener for free on affected models.

In addition to these issues, the 2021 Nissan Altima has been reported to have problems with the engine, paint and trim, electrical accessories, steering and suspension, climate system, engine electrical, brakes, drive, transmission, infotainment system, gear selector and linkage, sensors, emission-control devices, fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank, and other components.

It is important to note that these problems are relatively minor compared to some other midsize sedans from the same year, offering improvements in reliability from earlier years for the Altima. However, it is recommended to keep an eye on these issues and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-28
  • VIN: 1N4BL4BV0MN
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Every time I drive under an over pass my vehicle will come to a stop. Placing me in DANGER with traffic.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
  • VIN: 1N4BL4EW6MN
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I Serviced my vehicle with a Nissan Dealership, and was told brake pads were good. Within a couple of weeks there was a scratching sound like the brake warning indicator. I brought my car to a mechanic to be repaired but brake pads were confirmed to be fine. Further investigation indicates a bad brake caliper in the rear. Mechanic contacted Nissan to order a rear caliper and was told it’s a known issue with the rear calipers. With the caliper not functioning properly this is a direct safety violation and can cause my brakes to seize or not function hindering my/others ability to stop. I will have the repairs done with my mechanic and I have submitted a case file with Nissan. If Nissan is aware of the brake calipers having issues then this should be on the recall list and immediately fixed.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-18
  • VIN: 1N4BL4DV0MN
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I am writing to formally lodge a complaint regarding a recurring transmission issue with my 2021 Nissan Altima. The car has been experiencing significant power loss while driving, which I am certain is linked to a malfunctioning CVT transmission system. Despite ensuring that the transmission fluid levels are correct, the problem persists. Recently, the car lost power while I was going at least 50 mph on a busy road, which is very dangerous. Additionally, I have come across numerous complaints from other owners of the same model experiencing similar transmission issues. This history of complaints indicates a widespread problem that poses a serious safety risk and warrants a recall. Although there is an extended warranty, I don’t think it is fair for others being out of warranty when this is a very known issue with all owners. A CVT should last way longer than 70,000 miles, and some owners even report issues as early as 25,000 miles. Some mechanics even tell all their Nissan customers about the cons of the CVT, so it is very well known to not be good. Nissan basically has a deadly issue on their hands. I kindly request a thorough investigation and appropriate action to resolve this matter. Thank you for your attention to this serious issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-02
  • VIN: 1N4BL4FW7MN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Based on comments from various post online, it is a common issue that the doors’ lock on altimas with no warning or reasoning just stop working. Whatever position the lock is in, is the one that the lock will stay on even if a safety feature that’s advertised and you expect is for the Altima to automatically lock up when you begin to drive. At this point my personal Altima has not been inspected or fixed by anyone, just a day to day experience of having to check my backseat before getting in to make sure no one is in the back of my car because the doors do not lock. It’s been since about February that the car doors locking mechanism will not engage on two of my car doors, even if you press the lock/unlock switch inside of the door, the lock/unlock button on the key fob, nor the button on the outside of the door handle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-02
  • VIN: 1N4BL4DV9MN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: This has been an ongoing issue for over 2 years where I go somewhere, park and come back out and my car won’t start. I literally have to have someone come in to give me a jump so the whole time I was thinking it was a bad battery so I went and bought a new battery. Well fast forward not even 7 months later I’m in the same position I go to the store come out and my car completely has no power so I take the car to autozone and what do you know a faulty engine and alternator. So I get on line and see I’m not the only one with this issue. My main concern is I’ve always gone to my car dealership to get oil changes and not once have they ever told me after putting my car on the machine that they found an issue with neither. And again this has been going on for quite some time. My issue is now my warranty is out and it just so happen to just have ran out after my last oil change and again this was going on then and they never mentioned it. What are they going to do about this problem.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
  • VIN: 1N4BL4DV1MN
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I purchased my car from Sheehy Nissan of Waldorf on November 1, 2022. At the time of purchase the vehicle had 38,709 miles. It reportedly had one previous owner and was originally titled on 3/11/2021. From the day I purchased this vehicle I have had trouble with the automatic emergency braking system. I am experiencing sudden unintended brake activation in various situations. I have experienced the emergency braking system activating when I am driving at high speeds (60-70 mph) with nothing in front of me. I have had it automatically brake when I am in traffic maintaining safe distances and speeds. I have experienced it braking when I have been leaving a parking garage - again with nothing near or around my vehicle. When this occurs, it is when the warning lights turn off. So, it is completely random and unpredictable. The warning light turns on 100% of the time I drive the vehicle. I took my car to Sheehy Nissan of Waldorf for repair of this issue on 3/28/23, 6/13/23, and 8/3/23, but, to date, they have been unable to correct the problem. Most recently (8/25/23) I was given an estimate of an additional $1,977.43 for a 4th attempt to fix this problem. I met with the Service Manager, [XXX] , on 8/28/23 to discuss the matter. He said he would talk to the Nissan area rep and their warranty rep and get back to me. Two days later he responded that the area rep offered to cover 40% of the repair cost, making my cost $808.96 for the 4th repair attempt. As you are aware, this is a known issue with this vehicle and many other Nissan models. The NHTSA started an investigation into Nissan regarding this issue in September 2019. There have been multiple lawsuits and class action suits against Nissan for this same problem, yet they continue to sell these vehicles without fixing the problem or issuing a recall. • VIN: 1N4BL4DV3MN
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

This first happened not long after I purchased the car last year on the interstate in heavy traffic with low speed and nothing close enough to set it off. Sometimes just the emergency light will just appear and disappear quickly and sometimes it comes on and the brakes go on. The dealer service and the regional technician has inspected it a few times and could find no error but it only happens sporadically. I checked recently and there is a class action suit against Nissan for the same problem in Tennessee. There seems to be the same problem with other models from 2019 to present.

Negative 2021 Nissan Altima car reviews

  1. D'angelo Hirthe 2024-11-24

2017 was a great year for family sedans, but I wasn't aware of that at the time. Unfortunately, Toyota's 2018 redesign of the Camry resulted in a less comfortable ride with stiff seats. On the other hand, the Altima did not receive a significant upgrade with its 2019 redesign, but it still drives better than the new Camry. The Altima has a stronger passing power on the highway and better uphill drive due to its good low-end torque. However, the front seats are narrower than those of the 2018 Altima by about an inch, which makes them less comfortable than the older Altima. It's a shame that Nissan cut corners in this area. Lumbar support is not standard except for the highest trim, which is why I chose to buy the base model. Why pay thousands more for an equally uncomfortable car? I ended up with the Altima because I couldn't find my first choice, a new Ford Taurus, and the new Camry gives me back pain in just 10 minutes. The Altima has the best drivetrain power delivery among cars of this class and price, and I wanted to get a sedan before more redesigns make them even worse. I did not trade in my 8-year-old Camry because it is still much more comfortable to sit and drive than any of these new cars. I am sure my old Camry will outlast the new Altima!

  2. Alexis Bogan 2024-09-07

Despite having only 36,000 miles on my 2020 Altima SR, the seats started to rip. I reached out to Nissan Affairs for assistance, but unfortunately, they did not follow through on their promise to call me back. It is disappointing to see such cheap materials used in an otherwise nice car. As a customer, it is disheartening to feel like no one cares after signing on the dotted line. However, I am confident that Nissan will take responsibility for this issue and provide a satisfactory resolution.

  3. Seamus Kuvalis 2024-06-22

I recently visited a Nissan dealership to explore the SR, SL, or Platinum models. During my visit, the salesman informed me that the interior stitching is only available in orange for the SR models. While the orange stitching looks fantastic on cars with an orange exterior, it may not blend well with other exterior colors. I was disappointed to hear this news, but I appreciate the salesman's honesty and helpfulness.

  4. Orval Little 2024-06-12

I've always heard that these were good cars, so I thought I would give them a try. However, I found that the base S model is very bare bones. To get some nice driver assist options, aluminum wheels, and other convenience items, you have to get the SR, which comes with a list price of $28,000. Unfortunately, you can't get red, and you have to pay extra for maroon, which is not even red. Additionally, the only interior color available is black, which can be quite hot in the summer. When I compared it to the Hyundai Sonata, which is the same basic size car, I found that the Sonata has an 8-speed transmission with a stop/go feature and is also offered with a turbo engine with about 30% more horsepower. The SEL gives you all the packages offered by the Altima SR and more, including parking assist, lane departure, and remote start, all at a lower price. It is also available with tan or gray upholstery in addition to black, and the Calypso Red color is no charge. Moreover, with some

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the 2021 Altima. Overall, I think it's a great car that handles and drives well. However, I did run into a bit of trouble around 3,300 miles when the front camera needed a replacement part. The dealership assured me that it's okay to continue driving in the meantime, but it's been almost four days and we're still waiting for the part to arrive. Just wanted to give you a heads up in case you run into a similar issue!

I chose this car for its sleek appearance and advanced technology, which truly make it a dream to drive. If you're a fan of cutting-edge features, this car is definitely worth considering. However, it's important to note that its gas mileage is not ideal for city driving. With a 50-liter tank, you can expect to get no more than 400km in town. On the highway, it performs better, averaging about 6 liters for every 100km. Overall, this car is truly amazing in every way except for its gas consumption.

I've been driving an Altima rental for almost two weeks while my truck is in the shop. Although it's the low-end trim model, I find it quite comfortable. The car may be a little underpowered when starting out on an incline, but it's still acceptable. I'm really impressed with the great gas mileage it's getting. The car can easily accommodate four adults, which is a plus. I particularly like the keyless entry and remote start feature, which gives me hope that the car has nice electronics. However, the entertainment system seems to be the weak link. Although there's a nice big display, I can only connect my iPhone with a cable to access basic phone and iPod functions, which were available on a 2012 basic model Toyota. So, my message to auto manufacturers is this: I won't buy any vehicle that doesn't include Android Auto or Apple Carplay. It's not just Nissan that's losing at this game; Toyota is guilty too. I don't want to regret my vehicle purchase every time I get into my car. There was a time when it would be easy to upgrade to an aftermarket sound system, but that seems far from the case now. Since there's already a nice display installed, I wish there was a way to enable Carplay. I would even pay a reasonable amount to unlock that feature. But now, I would just have years of a less-than-optimal experience if I purchase this model.

Your Nissan is a great car! The interior is basic yet has everything you need, including a rear reverse camera, Bluetooth, blind spot signals, trunk space, back seat space, smooth ride, and reliability. The drive is incredibly smooth and comfortable, and the steering is just as smooth. The car is great on gas and has a nice trunk size with plenty of room for passengers. The standard safety and technology package is up to speed with what is expected on a modern vehicle. The car has a good reputation for lasting and being reliable. Although the power and acceleration are a bit slower compared to most standard 4 cylinder vehicles, the price is pretty average compared to most vehicles of its class, and the engine, technology, features, and design are of good quality. Overall, it's a great car that you can rely on!

The 2020 Altima has a fresh, modern exterior design and boasts a range of technical innovations inside, such as a larger screen, an updated Nissan Connect package, more comfortable seats, and additional sensors. It's also easy to drive, with good mileage and a CVT transmission that provides increased acceleration.

This Altima SL has a standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with front-wheel drive. On a trip from NY to San Antonio and back, it averaged an impressive 42.1 mpg while cruising at 80 to 85 mph, fully loaded with luggage and people. It is the best car I have ever owned. The controls are excellent, the handling is superb, and it is smooth to operate. The Bose radio is top-notch, and the seating is really comfortable. The only flaw I noticed was that the passenger seat is too low, which made my wife uncomfortable seeing forward. She is 5'6
