2002 Nissan Altima problems
The Nissan Altima is a mid-size car manufactured by Nissan since 1992. It is a continuation of the Nissan Bluebird line, which began in 1955.
The Altima has historically been larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less so than the Nissan Maxima. The first through fourth-generation cars were manufactured exclusively in the United States and officially sold in North and South America, along with the Middle East and Australia. For other markets, Nissan sold a related mid-size sedan called the Nissan Teana which was between the Altima and Maxima in terms of size. In 2013, the Teana became a rebadged version of the fifth-generation Altima.
The name "Altima" was originally applied to a top trim line of the Nissan Leopard for the Japanese market in 1986, and then to the Nissan Laurel mid-size car sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1992, Nissan discontinued the Stanza which was a Nissan Bluebird clone, replacing it with the US-built Altima, while remaining a compact car. The first Altima was produced in June 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altima models for the North American market were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant also began producing the model to meet high demand.

Common 2002 Nissan Altima problems
The Nissan Altima, a popular midsize sedan, has been known for its reliability, affordability, and comfortable ride. However, over the years, there have been numerous reports of transmission problems with the Altima, particularly its continuously variable transmission (CVT). This issue is particularly prevalent in models from the 2002 to 2010 model years.
- Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a significant problem in the Nissan Altima, with owners reporting lurching, stuttering between gears, or hesitation as they drive. The 2016 model, in particular, has been criticized for its CVT transmission, which uses belts and pulleys instead of regular automatic transmission components. These belts tend to wear out quickly and fail earlier than expected, leading to costly repairs.
- Lack of Acceleration: Another common problem reported by Nissan Altima owners is a lack of acceleration, where the car takes more time to reach higher speeds. This issue is caused by a problem with the gearbox, known as the transmission, and can make driving on big roads unsafe due to slower acceleration.
- Crankshaft or Camshaft Position Sensor Failure: A failing camshaft or crankshaft position sensor can cause the vehicle to not start or cause the engine to stall while the car is moving. This issue is intermittent and can be challenging to diagnose, but it is covered under a recall for some Nissan Altima models .
- Fuel Pump Premature Failure: The fuel pump in the Nissan Altima can fail prematurely, leading to engine stalling or failure to start. This issue is more common in the 2007 to 2012 model years and can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty components or poor maintenance .
- Catalytic Converter Issues: The catalytic converter in the Nissan Altima can become clogged or damaged, leading to reduced engine performance and increased emissions. This issue is more common in the 2002 to 2006 model years and can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty components or poor maintenance .
- Motor Mount Failure: The motor mounts in the Nissan Altima can fail, leading to excessive vibration and noise. This issue is more common in the 2002 to 2006 model years and can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty components or poor maintenance .
- Cam Sensor Failure: The cam sensor in the Nissan Altima can fail, leading to engine stalling or failure to start. This issue is more common in the 2002 to 2006 model years and can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty components or poor maintenance .
In summary, the Nissan Altima has been known for its transmission problems, particularly in the 2002 to 2010 model years. Transmission failure, lack of acceleration, crankshaft or camshaft position sensor failure, fuel pump premature failure, catalytic converter issues, motor mount failure, and cam sensor failure are some of the most common problems reported by Nissan Altima owners.

- Summary: I've owned my 2002 Nissan for about 6 months now the previous owner informed me prior to purchase about issues she was having and the reason she was selling the car, explain to me that her friend who has worked on cars 20+ yrs felt if cause could be found it was repairable but seems luck she had is now the luck I'm having. I have a couple ppl look over the car under hood and run diagnostics but nothing can be found.. I can't afford to junk the car my income budget is tight and doesn't allow much wiggle room to purchase a new ride a friend told me about the NHTSA website so we went exploring entering my VIN number comes back no recalls but looking over the recalls for saying make and model and year of my vehicle there's 12 to 15 recalls on it from headlights which I'm is an issue to engine stalls to catalyst issues but yet I'm told that no because we're done on my vehicle I know I'm not the first owner it's a vehicle that I just purchased but I want to speak to someone that can clarify or help me with finding out if my vehicle is actually supposed to be in recalls of these certain things because they were fitted the descriptions of what can take place fit what I'm experiencing and what the previous owner is experienced perfectly please contact me thank you for your time
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-02
- VIN: 1n4al11d12c
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: first, I started to notice my car would loose power while driving, over a couple months, it started to stall and/or completely shut off while driving at low speeds or at red lights! When this first stared happening, the car would immediately fire back up when cranked, after about a month of this, I noticed, I could not drive at or above 45mph or it would shut down, or drive for more than 15 minutes and it would shut off…AND NOT START AGAIN! It would crank, but not start, I would have to wait 30 minutes or more and then it would start right up! This is dangerous due to the immediate- no- warning shut off, whenever and wherever! I’ve almost caused multi car pile up! Not to mention my kids in the back seat and on the interstate! We could have been slammed into, and pushed down the interstate and over into other lanes! There’s a recall on 2002 Nissan Altimas for THIS VERY ISSUE!!! Somehow, my vehicles VIN # does not qualify! INFACT….. My VIN# NEVER EVER qualifies for ANY recall, but yet, my vehicle has the exact same problems!!

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-09-28
- VIN: 1N4BL11E12C
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: MY ENGINE IS DESTROYED BECAUSE A SCREW CAME LOOSE FROM THE THROTTLE BODY IN THE PLENUM, GOT SUCKED INTO AN ENGINE CYLINDER AND DESTROYED THAT CYLINDER. THIS WOULD COST SOMEWHERE BETWEEN $3K TO $5K TO REPAIR, MORE THAN THE CAR IS CURRENTLY WORTH. IN TALKING TO A NISSAN MECHANIC AND DOING ONLINE RESEARCH, THIS IS APPARENTLY NOT AN UNHEARD OF PROBLEM FOR NISSAN CARS. THERE HAS BEEN AT LEAST ONE RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM IN THE PAST FOR SOME NISSAN 4 CYLINDER CARS BUT THERE WAS NEVER A RECALL FOR 6 CYLINDER NISSAN ALTIMA CARS (MY CAR IS A 3.5L 6 CYLINDER MODEL) THE CAR WAS RUNNING FINE. I PARKED IT AT MY GYM AND WHEN I CAME OUT, STARTED IT UP. I WAS REWARDED WITH AN AWFUL NOISE AND ENGINE VIBRATION ALL OF A SUDDEN. I ONLY LIVED 1.5 MILES AWAY, SO I SLOWLY LIMPED THE CAR HOME. AFTER SOME MECHANICAL SLEUTHING AND BRINGING A MECHANIC TO MY HOME, WE DETERMINED THAT A SCREW HAD COME LOOSE AND GOTTEN SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE. I CALLED NISSAN USA TO EXPLAIN THE PROBLEM AND SEE IF THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. BUT ALL THEY OFFERED WAS THAT THEY "WOULD TAKE A LOOK " AT THE PROBLEM IF I PAYED TO TOW THE CAR TO A DEALERSHIP. THEY WOULD NOT MAKE ANY GUARANTEE THAT THEY WOULD THEN HELP ME IF THE PROBLEM TURNED OUT TO BE AS I HAVE DESCRIBED. IF THEY DIDN'T AGREE TO FIX THE PROBLEM, THEN I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR TOWING THE CAR BACK TO MY HOUSE. HERE IS ONE URL THAT LISTS 10 COMPLAINTS FOR THIS PROBLEM WITH NISSAN PATHFINDER AUTOS, WHICH USE THE SAME 6 CYLINDER ENGINE AS MY CAR. HTTPS://REPAIRPAL.COM/LOOSE-SCREWS-INSIDE-INTAKE-MANIFOLD-CAN-CAUSE-INTERNAL-DAMAGE-IF-THEY-FALL-OUT-448 WHAT MAKES THIS SO AWFUL IS THAT I HAD A RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE OLDER CAR (2002 WITH ONLY 95K MILES) AND THIS PROBLEM MAKES THE WHOLE CAR A JUNKER NOW DUE TO NO FAULT OF MY OWN WITH NO RECOURSE FOR ME!

- Summary: TOOK OUR 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA IN TO NISSAN FOR A RECALL REPAIR (2003 RECALL FOR EXHAUST / CATALYTIC CONVERTER ISSUES) - RECALL STATES IF ENGINE IS DAMAGED, THAT IT WILL BE REPLACED. ENGINE HAS BEEN DESTROYED DUE TO CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILURE. NISSAN HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THE RECALL AND DAMAGE AND INDICATED THE ENGINE WOULD BE REPLACED. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED LAT YEAR BY MY DAUGHTER, WE WERE UNAWARE OF THE RECALL UNTIL INCREASING OIL CONSUMPTION BECAME EXTREME. I CONTACTED STEVEN'S CREEK NISSAN AND THEY CONFIRMED THE RECALL REPAIRS HAD NEVER BEEN COMPLETED. I WAS TOLD TO BRING THE CAR IN FOR THE REPAIRS. I WAS VERY EXPLICIT IN THE DESCRIPTION OF THE OIL CONSUMPTION AS WELL AS METALLIC RESIDUE ON COMPONENTS - (I HAD REPLACED THE CAM / CRANK POSITION SENSORS WHEN THE ENGINE BEGAN TO RUN ROUGH - THEY BOTH HAD A GREY PASTE RESIDUE ON THEM). NISSAN ACKNOWLEDGED THE ENGINE WAS INDEED DAMAGED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AFTER HAVING THE CAR FOR NEARLY 2 MONTHS, I RECEIVED A CALL ADVISING THEY DID NOT HAVE THE PARTS ANYMORE AND WOULD NEED TO USE AFTERMARKET PARTS. THEY GAVE ME A PHONE NUMBER TO THE NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS, WHO AUTHORIZED THE AFTERMARKET PARTS. MULTIPLE TIMES, NISSAN CALLED TO SAY THEY HAD THE PARTS AND THE REPAIR WOULD BE COMPLETE BY THE END OF THE NEXT WEEK. THIS NEVER HAPPENED. AFTER ANOTHER MONTH PASSED, NISSAN CALLED TO SAY THEY DIDNT HAVE THE PROPER TOOLS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. I WENT TO NISSAN AND OBSERVED THE CAR HAD NOT MOVED OR HAD ANY WORK DONE AT ALL SINCE IT WAS DROPPED OFF IN JUNE. NISSAN HAS CALLED BACK AGAIN AND ADVISED THEY ARE UNABLE TO DO THE REPAIR AND THAT I SHOULD COME PICK THE CAR UP AS IS AND TRY SOME OTHER DEALERSHIP. NISSAN HAS HAD THIS VEHICLE SINCE 06/09/17. NISSAN HAS HAD THIS CAR FOR 5 MONTHS AND HAS NOT BEGUN THE RECALL REPAIR.

I bought my Altima with 75K miles and it has been a reliable car for me. It has taken my abuse very well and I haven't had any major issues to complain about. However, there have been a few minor problems such as the cam shaft sensor failing around 150K miles, both rear calipers seizing around 100K miles, and the #4 cylinder ignition coil failing around 175K miles. The BOSE CD changer has also been completely unreliable and the pop-out gasoline door is difficult to open. Around 150K miles, the car started having intermittent difficulties with engine starts, taking 10-15 seconds to start, but my mechanic hasn't found a good solution to the problem. Additionally, the door actuators tend to seize when it's cold out. Overall, I still love my Altima despite these minor issues.

I've had my Altima 3.5 SE for 2 weeks and I must say, I'm really enjoying it! The performance is great and the exterior is stunning - I've even had 8 strangers compliment me on it, with 3 of them mistaking it for a Lexus. The interior is also a huge plus, it's very spacious, luxurious and looks great in black. Of course, there are a few downsides such as the large turning radius and slightly noisier and rougher ride compared to a Camry or Accord, but overall it's a great car that's perfect for commuting or family trips. The power and fun driving aspects are definitely a plus, although I do have to be careful about tickets now!

I decided to try a Nissan and test drove a 3.5 SE Altima. Within just 30 seconds of the test drive, I knew that this was the car for me. I immediately appreciated the drive by wire accelerator. Additionally, I couldn't help but notice how well the Altima handled on my first turn, and the lack of body roll was truly impressive. The car looks sharp and expensive, like a sports car. The vehicle is also quite comfortable, with impressive leg room. If you're considering a mid-size V6 car, I highly recommend test driving the Altima. You won't regret it!

This car is fantastic! I've owned it for three years and have had no mechanical issues whatsoever. I bought it used with 31K miles and have since put over 60K miles on it. I've only needed to change the oil, brakes, and tires over the three years. The design is excellent both inside and out. It's incredibly fast with great pick up from a dead stop and takes corners like a dream. In fact, I'm so impressed that I'm going to buy a 2007 Altima in a couple of days!

This being my first car was not on my list because I didn't think I could afford it. However, not only could I afford it, I would never have known what I was missing out on. The performance, luxury, style, and class of this car are exceptional. It is the Lexus of Nissan. Who needs a Maxima! I highly recommend you go buy one, so you too can experience the greatness of this car and write your own review.

My car has been towed 3 times and has been in the shop 6 times, all due to failure to start. Despite having the throttle body, parking sensor, and alarm system replaced, and 3 recalls fixed, the issue persisted. However, the dealership has blamed different causes each time. Recently, I took it in for the same issue and was told that we flooded the car, which I find unlikely. I am disappointed with my experience and regret purchasing this car.

If it drove as good as it looks, I would be very happy. However, my stick grinds into 2nd and 3rd and the dealer says it's normal. Additionally, the car vibrates a great deal from external noise such as other cars and trucks. The vibration is strong in the steering wheel, pedals, and stick. I must admit, I miss my old car.

This car is certainly a sight to behold even after 8 years! However, I'm afraid I won't be purchasing another Nissan product anytime soon. Unfortunately, after some heavy rain, the car has had some trouble starting up. The head gaskets have worn out and leaked coolant, which has caused issues with the plugs and 02 sensors. This problem has persisted since I hit 80k. Additionally, the car seems to dent easily with any bump and feels a bit flimsy. It's definitely necessary to change the stock tires, especially if you live in an area with snow. The AC also struggles to defrost and cool the car down. Despite these issues, the car has an amazing engine, but it seems that Nissan is aware that the engine may not last. They have not taken responsibility for this. Overall, the engine is fantastic, but the fit, finish, and quality of the car leave something to be desired. You're lucky if you get 6 good years out of it.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share a quick tip with you. If you have a Nissan Altima and you've received a recall notice for the 'cold weather shutdown', I would recommend avoiding taking your car in for the recall. Our car had the screen installed and unfortunately, it has shut down three times in any weather since then. The accelerator just stops working and it's really frustrating. We've heard from other Altima owners that they've experienced the same issue. The dealership couldn't figure out what was wrong and even Nissan said they have no idea, but it seems like a lot of people are having this problem. Just wanted to give you a heads up! Let me know if you have any questions.

Your 2002 Nissan Altima, which I understand you recently traded in, was a great looking car that provided excellent comfort and ride quality. Although the amenities were minimal, overall the car was very nice. I understand that you experienced some issues with the car, such as burning oil and problems with the 02 sensors, fuel pump, and gas tank. Despite these issues, I'm glad to hear that the car drove smoothly and quietly 90% of the time when it was running well.
