2004 Nissan Altima problems
The Nissan Altima is a mid-size car manufactured by Nissan since 1992. It is a continuation of the Nissan Bluebird line, which began in 1955.
The Altima has historically been larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less so than the Nissan Maxima. The first through fourth-generation cars were manufactured exclusively in the United States and officially sold in North and South America, along with the Middle East and Australia. For other markets, Nissan sold a related mid-size sedan called the Nissan Teana which was between the Altima and Maxima in terms of size. In 2013, the Teana became a rebadged version of the fifth-generation Altima.
The name "Altima" was originally applied to a top trim line of the Nissan Leopard for the Japanese market in 1986, and then to the Nissan Laurel mid-size car sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1992, Nissan discontinued the Stanza which was a Nissan Bluebird clone, replacing it with the US-built Altima, while remaining a compact car. The first Altima was produced in June 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altima models for the North American market were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant also began producing the model to meet high demand.

- Camshaft and Crankshaft Issues: Owners have reported consistent problems related to the camshaft and crankshaft of the 2004 Nissan Altima. These components are crucial for the engine's operation, and issues with them can lead to performance issues, stalling, and potential engine damage. It's essential to address these problems promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the vehicle's reliability.
- Transmission Concerns: Some owners have experienced transmission failures with the 2004 Nissan Altima. Transmission issues can manifest as rough shifting, slipping gears, or complete failure to engage properly. Addressing transmission problems promptly is crucial to prevent further damage and maintain the vehicle's drivability.
- Steering Wheel Lock Failure: Another reported problem with the 2004 Nissan Altima is steering wheel lock failure. This issue can lead to difficulties in steering the vehicle, posing a safety risk for the driver and passengers. Prompt attention to steering-related problems is essential to ensure safe operation of the vehicle.
- Suspension Complaints: While there are very few suspension complaints on file for the 2004 Altima, it's worth noting that shocks and struts play a vital role in the vehicle's handling and comfort. Any issues with the suspension system should be addressed promptly to maintain the vehicle's ride quality and safety.
- Interior Material Wear: Some owners have noted that the interior materials of the 2004 Nissan Altima, such as plastics and fabrics, may exhibit wear over time, leading to cracking and peeling. While this may not affect the vehicle's performance, it can impact the overall aesthetic and comfort of the interior.
By addressing these common problems promptly and proactively, owners of the 2004 Nissan Altima can ensure the longevity, reliability, and safety of their vehicles. What year was bad for Nissan Altima?
Model years 2011 and 2012 are perhaps the best. Reliability is top-notch, and registered complaints are minimal. Nissan Altima's worst model years include 2002, 2003, 2009, and 2013-2015. From engine and powertrain failures to faulty electricals, these models are best avoided.
Does the Nissan Altima have a good engine?
The Altima's base engine struggles to hustle the car up to speed, and its CVT causes the engine to drone noisily during acceleration. The optional turbocharged engine delivers more punch, especially once the car is moving, but it still contends with the CVT's rubbery responses.

SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-02-11
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1N4BL11D54C
- Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: REAR SUSPENSION BUSHINGS & TAKATA RECALL THE CAR SLIPS IN THE REAR WHEELS SIMILAR TO "FISH-TAILING" IN SNOW. NISSAN OFFERED A RECALL IN 2006 TO REPLACE PARTS ON REAR SUSPENSION SYSTEM WITHOUT NOTIFYING ME UNTIL 2015, MONTHS BEFORE THE RECALL EXPIRED. NOTICES NEVER CONTAINED ANY NOTIFICATION OF ANY EXPIRATION DATE. AFTER HOURS OF CUSTOMER SERVICE CLAIMED THERE WAS NEVER A RECALL; THEN YES THERE WAS A RECALL THAT I HAD REPLACED IN 2007; THEN CLAIMING THE WORK WAS COMPLETED IN 2014, THEY FINALLY AGREED TO HAVING THE CAR INSPECTED REGARDING THIS RECALL. THE DEALERSHIP AT WOODFIELD NISSAN CLAIMED THAT MY CAR WAS "UNSAFE TO DRIVE" AND LISTED EVERY OTHER PART OF MY SUSPENSION THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED OTHER THAN THE MAIN ONE IN THE RECALL. A SERVICE ORDER WAS CREATED THAT THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO GIVE ME WHEN THE SERVICE MANAGER LOST HIS TEMPER AND GOT PHYSICALLY INTIMIDATING TOWARDS ME. MY WIFE AND I ARE FRIGHTENED TO EVER GO TO THIS DEALERSHIP DUE TO THIS. NOW I AM DRIVING AN "UNSAFE TO DRIVE" VEHICLE THAT NISSAN LEFT ME WITHOUT ANY PAPERWORK TO ADVISE ME WHAT IS UNSAFE ABOUT IT. AFTER ASKING NISSAN CORPORATION TO STEP IN, AS WELL AS BBB & IL A.G. REPORTS WERE FILED, NO ONE TO DATE HAS GIVEN ME DOCUMENTATION REGARDING THIS INSPECTION. THIS DEALERSHIP'S OWNER ALSO OWNS THE OTHER DEALERSHIP NEAR ME AND MY WIFE WHERE WE ARE NO LONGER WELCOMED. THIS, AND THE FACT THAT THE CORPORATION REFUSES TO HELP RESOLVE THIS, MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO HAVE THE TAKATA RECALL WORK COMPLETED WITHOUT GOING THRU FURTHER STRESS WITH NISSAN AND LOCAL DEALERSHIPS. THAT IS VERY UNETHICAL, IF NOT ILLEGAL.

Negative 2004 Nissan Altima car reviews
Positive 2004 Nissan Altima car reviews
-
The car has an exceptional ride and smooth handling. The power is not too bad for a 4-cylinder car.
-
I really love my Nissan! It makes me feel so safe because of its unique design (did you know it's made from one piece of steel, not many fused together?). I've never had any problems with it, and it even helped me avoid a wreck with a careless teenager. The price is much lower than its worth, and the value stays high. I'm sure anyone who buys one will love it too! I bought the 2.5, but I added all the features of the 3.5 and still saved some money!
-
I purchased the car used with 36,000 miles on it. The car feels solid and durable, and I have put it through its paces with 30,000 mostly highway miles per year. The only issue I have encountered is with the brakes, as the rotors do not seem to be well-built.
-
I really love this car! The interior has a unique style that reminds me of a motorcycle. Plus, the heated seats and steering wheel radio controls are unbeatable. It's amazing how it drives like a 6 cylinder despite only having 4. The pickup is also really good!
-
I've owned it for about 3 weeks now and I just love it! It's so much fun to drive and it's incredibly roomy. The mileage is also very good, getting 30-33 on the highway and 23+ in the city. The leather is of great quality and the Bose audio is simply awesome. It goes without saying that it's the sexiest looking car in its price-range.

Although the heater was not to my liking, I found the car to be a pleasure to drive. Despite the windows fogging up and the occasional blast of cold air on my legs, I enjoyed my 8-day rental experience. The heater issue aside, I would consider purchasing this car.
Garrett Fadel 2024-05-22
Although I have experienced some issues with this car, such as difficulty starting on certain mornings and poor gas mileage, I am confident that these are not indicative of the car's overall performance. While some may have had negative experiences, I believe that this car has the potential to be a reliable and efficient choice for many drivers.
Ernie Schmeler 2024-02-29
I have had to have my car towed away twice due to starting issues, and unfortunately, I was never informed of the recalls, including one related to the engine. As a result, I have resorted to driving around with washable paint on my car, stating that it is a lemon with multiple recalls. Despite my attempts to trade it back, I have not received any satisfaction. I continue to drive it as is, parking it in the Trump Taj Mahal parking garage for five days a week where it is visible to everyone. Additionally, during my 45-minute drive to work, it is hard to miss. It is frustrating to have a brand new car that does not start.
