2018 Bmw X3 problems
The BMW X3 is an SUV manufactured by BMW since 2003, based on the BMW 5 Series platform. Now in its third generation, BMW markets the car as a Sports Activity Vehicle, the company's proprietary descriptor for its X-line luxury vehicles.
The first-generation X3 was designed by BMW in conjunction with Magna Steyr of Graz, Austria—who also manufactured all X3s under contract to BMW. BMW manufactured the second-generation X3 at their Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, United States. Starting with the third generation, BMW South Africa's Rosslyn plant began production of the X3, alongside the Spartanburg plant, after the facility underwent a major upgrade to prepare for the X3 production, replacing the long-running 3 Series production in the plant. About 76,000 units will be manufactured there annually.
The car was the first mid-size, premium SUV on the market. In 2008, BMW started competing with the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (renamed GLC-Class since 2016), and numerous other SUVs in this segment. The X3 is smaller than the X5 and X6, and bigger than the X1 and the X2.
An all-electric variant is sold as the BMW iX3.

Common 2018 Bmw X3 problems
The 2018 BMW X3 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. Here are the details of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Electrical Problems: Electrical issues are another common problem for the 2018 BMW X3, with one specific complaint about a drivetrain malfunction causing a total lockdown and leaving the vehicle stranded.
- Steering Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the steering system, where steering has become increasingly heavy.
- Automatic Gearbox Problems: Drivers have reported an issue with the automatic gearbox on their BMW X3, where it selects the wrong gear for them.
- Rear Spoiler: The rear spoiler fitted to some cars made between 14 July 2017 and 22 February 2018 could fall off, causing additional wind noise when it starts to come loose. Owners are advised to speak to a BMW dealer to find out further information, as improved fixings will need to be fitted to solve this issue.
- Restricted Fuel Supply: A problem in the fuel tank of examples made from 16 August 2016 and 21 January 2018 could lead to restrictions in the fuel supply and cause the engine to stall. If your car is affected by this, it will need to have the fuel system inspected by a dealer in order for repairs to be carried out.
- Isofix Restraints: The rear Isofix restraints on cars constructed between 1 August 2010 and 15 April 2016 could work loose over time. A BMW dealer will be able to tell you if your car is subject to this recall and book the car in for repairs.
- Front Passenger Airbag: A small number of X3s built before 2013 could have a problem with the front passenger airbag not deploying correctly in a collision. Owners are advised to contact their BMW dealer to find out if their car is affected by this.
- Power Steering Failure: An electrical issue with the power steering system could cause it to fail on X3s built between 19 September 2011 and 8 December 2015. Affected examples will need to have a new power steering system fitted to fix the fault.
- EGR Cooler: There have been three recalls for leaking EGR coolers, which apply to various models built between 5 August 2010 and 24 October 2017. Owners are advised to contact their dealer for further information, as the vehicle will need to be inspected if it is suspected to be one of those affected.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-15
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 5UXTR9C50JL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: January 15, 2021 our BMW burned to the ground. I had just picked it up after an oil change at the dealership. Only the second oil change and the SUV had less than 17,000 miles. My safety was certainly at risk as I was stopped at a red light when the engine started smoking. I exited the car, but within 1-2 minutes the car was engulfed in flames. Several pieces flew off the SUV was tires popped or other components exploded. People in the area were near the SUV when pieces flew off the car. I am sure by now the car has been destroyed. Until I saw a recent BMW car fire recall and read the documents I did not know I had the ability to file a claim. We submitted an insurance claim and they investigated and the dealer investigated. The dealer was found to not be at fault. To my knowledge the insurance investigator and the dealer (BMW of Portland) inspected the car. Warning lights appeared on the dash one traffic light, about one mile prior to the vehicle dying at the light where it caught fire. The warning lights came at the same time the vehicle died. I was able to start it again and then it died a the next light and started smoking. Also important is that I just saw the recent BMW fire potential recall that does not include the X3 in the 2018 model year, but does include the 2017 model year. NHTSA recall # 24V-608. We were paid a significantly diminished value for the vehicle based on depreciation, which meant we were out $10-$12,000 on a vehicle we had planned to keep for a very long time.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-23
- VIN: 5UXTR9C56JL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The sos antenna in our x3 had a leak around the seal due to a poor design. Over time the tcb got corroded and caused an sos system malfunction. I have researched other cases in which a malfunction had not popped up, but still replicated the same issues as with the warning. Part of the module is the automatic sos help, if one were to get into an accident and rely on this system not realizing it was faulty, it could result in much slower response times if said person were unable to access a phone able to call proper emergency response teams.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-28
- VIN: 5UXTR9C58JL
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: While reversing heard a clanking noise (like a heavy wrench falling off from few feet). Came out and checked and found a broken piece of suspension coil spring near the front left wheel. Checked the inner portion of the coil with hand and felt uneven surface on the lower part of the coil similar to the unevenness on the broken part. Remaining coil is still hard to move and seems to be in place. Car is only 6 yrs old and driven for less than 35k miles. Asked around with local shops and they say with this age and miles it should not crack like this and could be a quality issue. No rust is visible and remaining part of coil looks intact. Please check photo as well.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-20
- VIN: 5UXTS3C55J0
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Something is wrong with the BMW OEM windshields with HUD. I have had to completely replace 3 in 5 years. In between replacements have had Safeliite try and fill pits in it. My last windshield lasted 21 days before cracking on the side at the very edge. I was driving and the road construction had very uneven lane heights so the car was higher on the passenger side. All of the sudden I heard a crack. The was not rock or debris that hit the windshield. There have been lots of complaints about the BMW windshields with HUD especially the X series SUV’s. People are saying softer glass. All I know is this is dangerous and BMW is up charging for replacement windshields if you don’t have insurance or a warranty. The cost is in the thousands for the replacement. I’ve never had a car that had such issues with the windshield being damaged so easily and or faulty glass. My last windshield replacement was 6/29/23, cracked 7/20/23

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-15
- VIN: 5UXTR9C59JL
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I am writing to report a potential safety problem with my 2018 BMW X3, VIN: (provide VIN here if available), that was purchased in May 2018 and has covered 36,000 miles since then. The vehicle has always been garaged and well-maintained. A few weeks ago, I experienced a critical malfunction with the vehicle's moonroof. I opened it normally, but it failed to close afterwards. I should note that this was merely the 4th or 5th time I have ever operated the moonroof since the car was purchased. As of now, the moonroof remains in the open position unable to close it even manually. With summer on the horizon, the interior of the car is exposed to direct sunlight and increasing temperatures. This situation raises significant concerns for my family, particularly the potential health risks to my 7-year-old daughter due to prolonged exposure to excessive heat and sunlight. Upon experiencing this issue, I contacted the service department for troubleshooting. The technicians diagnosed the issue as a problem with the interior sunshade motor, an electrical issue that necessitates a labor-intensive process to fix, including the removal of the vehicle's headliner. Subsequently, I reached out to BMW North America, seeking support and resolution for this significant malfunction. To my disappointment, they declined to acknowledge the problem or offer any assistance towards remediation. This response was unexpected and unsatisfactory, considering the potential health risks and safety concerns the malfunctioning moonroof poses to occupants of the vehicle. I respectfully request your department to investigate this matter and take appropriate action to protect the safety and wellbeing of consumers who may be dealing with similar issues. This may well represent a widespread manufacturing defect that could affect numerous vehicles of the same make and model, thereby posing substantial risks to a large number of people. Thank you for your attention to this matter. The contact stated that the manufacturer initially told them that they would not handle the repairs. As of now, all communications from the manufacturer has stopped and no repairs have been.

Can be felt in steering. 4/22 Vehicle is taken to BMW for inspection; needed to come back as they couldn't figure it out. 5/22 Vehicle sound is replicated by BMW dealer service center. I have not received any warning messages or lights prior. Current lights that stay lit longer than usual are the assisted driving and the hazard. This has been since the power failure however. Vehicle has been out of service for a collective 150+ days this year. No remedy to to issue. 11/22 Car broke down again on the highway; extreme shaking, bouncing, loose and uncontrolled steering. 12/22 Car back in service and immediate rattle under front driver's side, loose steering and wobbly tires. Electrical failure, no start and all dash lights glowing. (possible battery issue). 1/23 Car is back to BMW for further inspection. No information yet I believe safety and others is at risk because there have been two times that I was driving and the car felt that is was not controllable. The BMW service center has had it in their garage 5 occasions without remedy. One certified mechanic has been unable to diagnose as well. Parts repaired: Struts, Guides, Swing Arm/Sway, Both front lower control arms, tires and drivers side CV axle.

The contact stated that both vehicles were more than a vehicle's distance apart and that the feature should not have been activated. The dealer was notified about the failure and informed her that they were aware of the matter; the contact was then given an appointment for a diagnostic. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown. The contact stated that the failure mileage was 13,600.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-17
- VIN: 5UXTR9C5XJL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: * Components: Per dealership, Heat exchanger (metal) and oil filter housing (plastic), oil filter housing supports the heat exchanger, vehicle inspected by dealership and available for further inspection. *Vehicle unexpectedly overheated while driving on interstate risking the safety of driver/passengers and others. Dealer's (manufacturer) technician stated that the heat from the metal exchanger warped the plastic oil filter housing causing coolant to leak from heat exchanger, thus not allowing coolant to circulate to engine (leaking out) and causing vehicle to overheat. Metal warping (or potentially melting) plastic seems hazardous *Dealer's technician (manufacturer) inspected and identified the problem and quoted a cost of $3,140.80 to repair (this is seemingly a manufacturer's design flaw). Vehicle's warning system displayed an alert that coolant level was low while driving on interstate and recommended adding coolant soon. Driver pulled over within 5 min of warning light and added coolant. Within 5 min of driving away, Vehicle's onboard warning system displayed warning that vehicle coolant was low and engine temperature was elevated but it was safe to drive a low speed and consult nearest dealership, 2 min afterwards, vehicle alerted driver that engine overheated and to stop vehicle and contact nearest dealership. Vehicle towed to nearest dealership.

The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with brake master cylinder failure. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-16
- VIN: 5UXTS3C51J0
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: THE VEHICLE'S REAR LIFTGATE HAS OPENED RANDOMLY SEVERAL TIMES WITHOUT NOTICE OR WITHOUT INPUT FROM THE USER. THE FIRST INCIDENT WAS WHEN BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT, THE REAR LIFTGATE OPENED SUDDENLY. THIS IS CONCERNING BECAUSE IT WAS A BUSY PARKING LOT AND OUR DOG WAS IN THE CAR AND BEGAN TO JUMP OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND COULD HAVE JUMPED INTO MOVING TRAFFIC. ANOTHER INCIDENT OCCURRED IN OUR DRIVEWAY WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND UNLOCKED AND UNOCCUPIED. WE NOTICED THAT THE HATCH HAD OPENED BY ITSELF AT SOME POINT WITHOUT ANY INPUT FROM ANYONE. I DO NOT WANT TO WAIT FOR AN ADDITIONAL INCIDENT TO OCCUR WHICH COULD LEAD TO THE INJURY OR DEATH OF AN OCCUPANT, HUMAN OR OTHERWISE. OUR VEHICLE IS OUTFITTED WITH A FACTOR TOW HITCH SO WE BELIEVE THAT THE CAR DOES NOT HAVE THE CAPABILITY OF HANDS-FREE LIFTGATE OPENING WITH A 'KICK' MOTION. WE DO NOT KNOW IF THE SENSORS FOR THIS FEATURE ARE STILL INSTALLED BUT DISABLED AND/OR IF THEY BECAME ENABLED BY MISTAKE THROUGH A SOFTWARE UPDATE AT THE DEALERSHIP.

We recently upgraded our car from a 2016 BMW X3 28i to a brand new 2018 X3 M40i and we couldn't be happier! While we enjoyed our previous car, the M40i is a significant improvement in every aspect. If you're considering the X3 30i, we highly recommend going the extra mile to get the M40i. It's an absolute joy to drive - incredibly powerful, handles like a dream, and the sound is just fantastic. The new interior is also a major upgrade from the 2016 model. We opted for the Premium and Executive packages, which we believe are essential for the added features they provide. Of course, there are other options available, but we're thrilled with our choices. If you can, we suggest finding ways to make the M40i work for you - it's worth it! You won't regret it.

I'm glad to hear that you love this vehicle! It sounds like it has a lot of great features, like the back seats that fold down almost flat for extra cargo space and the different drive modes to adjust gas consumption. It's also great to hear that the seats are comfortable for longer trips and that there's nice leg room in the back. The trunk space sounds like a plus too! It's unfortunate that you had some trouble with a reoccurring 'Check Engine' light, but I hope that the issue has been resolved. Overall, it sounds like a great vehicle!

My BMW X3 is an exceptional vehicle with a solid build quality and a well-organized layout. The new iDrive system took some time to get used to, but it has been a great addition. With over 700 miles driven, I am pleased to report a mileage of 29.2 mpg on the highway. After 25,000 miles in just 18 months, my lifetime average for the X3 stands at an impressive 30.7 mpg. The vehicle is incredibly comfortable to drive and ride in, making long trips a breeze. Although luggage space is somewhat reduced due to the non-run flat tires, removing the soft cover provides some relief. I have had two visits to the dealer for regular oil changes, and the BMW Connected feature has been a wonderful addition. While I regret not opting for adaptive cruise control, I have found the towing hook and Apple Play to be unnecessary. The Apple Play implementation is subpar, and I have it turned off. However, the BMW Connected feature allows me to look around the vehicle, lower windows, sound an alarm, and send destination information directly to the system. Despite some issues with the 360 camera and other electronics, the X3 has been a delight to drive, with a range of over 500 miles and a lifetime average of 30.5 mpg. Overall, I highly recommend the BMW X3 to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable vehicle.

If you own a 2017-2024 X3, it's important to be aware of an issue with the tailgate and liftgate that may cause rainwater to leak inside. The liftgate gasket design is flawed, as the roof bar's gaskets go directly to the liftgate gasket's under. This can cause rainwater to seep under the liftgate gaskets and into the backside of the car, potentially damaging the stereos and main battery. If you're experiencing this issue, it's recommended to have it checked by a dealer service. To prevent this issue from occurring, it's suggested to change the liftgate gasket every two years. It's important to note that this issue does not affect X5 models. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I had the pleasure of driving this 'loaner' for a week. Unfortunately, I found that the car felt disconnected from the road and required constant attention to stay in the lane. Despite checking the tire pressure and making adjustments, I didn't notice any improvement. However, I believe that BMW still produces high-quality vehicles. I did experience some difficulty with Bluetooth and syncing my iPhone, but I'm sure that with some troubleshooting, it could be resolved. That being said, if you're looking for a more affordable option, I would recommend checking out Mazda. You could save yourself 10K!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share something with you - I've been experiencing some squealing from the brakes or rotors on my BMW. I took it to the dealership to be serviced, but they claim there's nothing wrong. I don't mind a little squeak here and there, but a loud squeal every time I reverse or move forward just doesn't seem right. Do you have any advice or suggestions on what I can do? Thank you so much!

Hi there! As a Torontonian, I am the proud owner of a BMW 2018 X3 series that was factory delivered on lease for 4 years. I absolutely love my vehicle and all of its amazing features! However, after driving 40K in just 2 years, I was informed by the service department that both front tires had worn out on the outside and needed to be replaced. Since each tire functions individually, tire rotation was not an option. I was advised to replace both front tires and get a wheel alignment done. Despite having no past accidents, rough driving, or rim damage from curb hits, my new car had low tire tread. I suspect that the lane assist system retracts the vehicle between lane markings, especially on curved highways, but I cannot prove it. Unfortunately, I was told that once the lease period ends after 4 years, at 80K, I will have to replace the tires as per the lease agreement. I am very disappointed that I have to replace the tires twice during the 4-year lease period, especially since it's not my fault. It feels like the manufacturer is experimenting on customers at our expense. If any other X3 owners have feedback, I would love to hear it!
