Common 2008 Nissan 350z problems

The Nissan 350Z is a reliable car, with some of its model years scoring better than others for reliability. According to Cars.com, the Nissan 350Z received a rating of 4.8 out of 5.0, with 100% of the drivers on its site recommending it. US News & World Report scored the 2009 Nissan 350Z a 4.5 out of 5.0 for reliability. However, there are some common problems that affect the Nissan 350Z, particularly the 2003 to 2009 models.

One of the most common problems is throttle body issues. The throttle body on the Nissan 350Z is prone to carbon buildup, which requires regular cleaning to maintain its performance. However, cleaning the throttle body can sometimes lead to issues like high idle, erratic idle, and intermittent power surging. These issues happen when the Nissan 350Z's computer registers too much air and takes a while to adjust. While it is trying to change settings, the idle may bounce from low to high, and the vehicle may also surge forward. Some owners were able to resolve this problem by disconnecting the battery for an hour and resetting the computer, while others had to replace the throttle body to fix the issue.

Another common problem is worn fuel dampers, which can cause ticking noises. Many owners of 2003 to 2009 Nissan 350Zs have complained about having worn fuel dampers that cause ticking noises. Some of them reported hearing odd noises coming from their engine compartment while in idle mode. Others complained that the airbag warning light constantly turns on while the engine emits a ticking noise. A faulty fuel damper can produce a ticking noise when the engine is idling. Most owners were able to resolve this problem by replacing the worn fuel damper on both sides.

The 2005 Nissan 350Z has quite a number of engine-related problems, one of which is stalling. Other common issues include excessive oil consumption, crankshaft and camshaft sensor failure, and tapping noises coming from the engine bay. Some owners have heard their engine knocking at 40,000 miles. Unfortunately, most of them were told this was “normal,” so it doesn’t need fixing.

The timing chain guide and tensioners are also a common problem in the Nissan 350Z, particularly in the 2003 to 2006 models. The timing chain is located in the front of the engine and connects the top of the engine to the bottom of the engine. If the timing chain guide and tensioners fail, the engine can suffer from reduced performance, misfiring, and even catastrophic failure. Replacing the timing chain guide and tensioners can be a complex and expensive repair, but it is necessary to prevent further damage to the engine

The rear wheel hub bearings are another common problem in the Nissan 350Z. The hub bearing is what attaches the wheel to the vehicle itself. If the rear hub bearings fail, the vehicle may produce a howling or humming noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. The noise may change pitch from turning left to right. Another way to check for a problem with rear hub bearings is to grab the top of the tire and the lower part of the tire and shake it back and forth. If there is play there, new hub bearings are needed

In summary, while the Nissan 350Z is a reliable car, it does have some common problems that affect its performance and longevity. Regular maintenance and careful handling can help prevent some of these issues, but it is important to be aware of them and address them promptly if they do occur.

What are the cons of the 2008 350Z?

Cons. Some low-grade interior materials, steering wheel doesn't telescope, poor rearward visibility, stiff-leg clutch can be a pain around town.

Is Nissan 350Z a bad first car?

In conclusion, the Nissan 350Z can be a great first car for drivers who are looking for a car that is fun to drive and has impressive performance. However, the car may not be the best choice for new drivers or those who are on a tight budget.

  • VIN: JN1BZ34DX8M
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY 08 350Z (CURRENTLY HAS 70K MILES) ON THE HIGHWAY APPROX 60 MPH WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO DOWNSHIFT FOR MY EXIT. THE CLUTCH PEDAL WENT DOWN AND STUCK WHEN I SHIFTED OUT OF 6TH AND THE CAR WOULDN'T GO INTO ANY GEAR. I MISSED THE EXIT AND PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AND STOPPED. TURNS OUT THE SLAVE CYLINDER THAT HAD BEEN REPLACED 20K MILES AGO UNDER RECALL HAD GONE BAD AGAIN! EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE IS THAT IN 68K MILES, I'VE HAD TO HAVE THE SLAVE REPLACED 2X, CLUTCH REPLACED 3X, FLYWHEEL RESURFACED 2X, FLYWHEEL REPLACED 1X, CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER REPLACED 1X, MULTIPLE TRANS SERVICES, MULTIPLE TIMES BLEEDING THE CLUTCH. ALL WORK DONE AT DEALER USING OEM PARTS. THIS IS A KNOWN 350Z DEFECT AND NISSAN SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR REPLACING THE CLUTCH SYSTEM W/ AN IMPROVED DESIGN BEFORE MORE PEOPLE ARE INJURED OR KILLED!

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-06-20
  • VIN: JN1BZ34D78M
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I PURCHASED MY 08 350Z GRAND TOURING OCTOBER 5, 2015 FROM HOY FOX TOYOTA IN EL PASO TX. 3 DAYS LATER IT LEFT ME STRANDED. THE CLUTCH STAYED TO THE FLOOR AND IT WOULDN'T GEAR. THEY SOLD IT TO ME SAYING IT HAD A NEW CLUTCH SO I DECIDED AFTER TEST DRIVING IT TO TAKE IT. I HAD TO WAIT 30 DAYS FOR MY POWER TRAIN WARRANTY TO KICK IN SO I CAN MAKE A CLAIM. INITIALLY IT WAS THE MASTER CYLINDER WHICH WAS COVERED. HOWEVER, THAT WAS NOT THE CASE. LATER THEY SAID I NEEDED A WHOLE NEW CLUTCH KIT FOR AROUND 2800. OF COURSE I DON'T HAVE THAT AMOUNT OF MONEY. I PURCHASED AND EXEDY AFTERMARKET CLUTCH , FLYWHEEL AND PRESSURE PLATE AS THEY TOLD ME TO DO. TOOK IT HOME NOVEMBER 15 AND IT WORKED FINE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. IT THEN BEGAN TO LEAK CLUTCH FLUID AND CLUTCH FELT SOFT. I WENT BACK AND THEY KEPT TELLING ME TO GO TO NISSAN. I PAID FOR A DIAGNOSIS AT VIVA NISSAN IN EL PASO TX AND THE CONCENTRIC SLAVE CYLINDER WAS THE ISSUE. I HAD TO GO BACK AND FORTH AND TRY TO GET THE HELP TO FIX THIS ISSUE. I BOUGHT A SLAVE CYLINDER ONLINE BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW I HAD THAT PART UNDER WARRANTY. I TRIED TALKING TO THEM AT DEALERSHIP BUT NO HELP UNTIL I MADE A BAD REVIEW. THEY TOOK THE CAR IN AND THEY SAID NO WORRIES WE WILL FIX IT. THEY REPLACED THE SLAVE CYLINDER AND IN 3 DAYS ONCE AGAIN IT FAILED. PLASTIC NISSAN PARTS ARE NO GOOD. THEY GET DAMAGED EASILY AND EVEN NEW CARS WITH LESS THAN 5000 MILES NEED IT ALL REPLACED. THE ONLY SOLUTION WE ALL MIGHT HAVE IS A HEAVY DUTY SLAVE CYLINDER FROM ZSPEEDSPORTS AND ITS EXPENSIVE. I'VE BEEN READING SO MANY CASES AND WE ALL HAVE THE SAME ISSUES. IT'S RIDICULOUS WHAT WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH AND FOR NISSAN NOT TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE IMMEDIATELY . I HAVE NO CAR AND ITS AT DEALERSHIP ONCE AGAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME. I HAVE A CASE NUMBER 23013379. THESE VEHICLES NEED TO BE REPLACED AND FIXED. TOO MANY CASES AND NO HELP FROM DEALERSHIP.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-05-22
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE IS A 2008 350Z ROADSTER WITH 15,000 MILES, AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED AT AROUND 7500 MILES (UNDER WARRANTY) DUE TO BEARINGS THAT WERE BROKEN. WHEN THE CAR IS BROUGHT TO MID-HIGH REVS IN 1ST/2ND GEAR, THE CLUTCH WILL DISENGAGE AND FALL TO THE FLOOR. THIS IS ACCOMPANIED BY A VERY STRONG BURNING SMELL (CHARACTERISTIC CLUTCH BURNING SMELL) AND IS EXTREMELY DAMAGING TO THE CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION. THE CLUTCH PEDAL HAS TO BE PULLED UP MANUALLY AND IS NOTICEABLY SOFTER AFTER THIS HAPPENS. THIS PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED 2-3 TIMES IN THE PAST YEAR. THIS PROBLEM WAS NOTICED IN 2007 350Z'S AND HAS CONTINUED INTO THE 2008 350Z'S. THE 350Z MENTIONED IN THIS REPORT WAS MANUFACTURED IN 10/07. *TR

  • VIN: JN1BZ34DX8M
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: DRIVING ON FREEWAY APPROXIMATELY 70-75 MPH, WHEN APPLYING PRESSURE TO CLUTCH PEDAL I REALIZE THERE IS LITTLE TO NO CLUTCH PEDAL PRESSURE AND CLUTCH PEDAL STICKS TO THE FLOOR AND HAS TO BE PULLED BACK WITH MY FOOT. FELT SLIGHT PEDAL PRESSURE AT THE END OF PEDAL TRAVEL AND DISENGAGED AND CHANGED GEARS INTO NEUTRAL. PUMPED CLUTCH WHILE IN NEUTRAL TO SEE IF CLUTCH PEDAL PRESSURE COULD RETURN TO NORMAL WITH NO SUCCESS. CLUTCH ENGAGEMENT REMAINED THE SAME AT THE VERY END OF TRAVEL AND WOULD NO LONGER GO INTO GEAR. CONTINUED PUMPING CLUTCH PEDAL AND WAS LUCKY TO GET BACK INTO SIXTH GEAR WITH A GRIND INTO GEAR TO CONTINUE DRIVING ON FREEWAY AT SPEED. STILL PEDAL CONTINUED TO STICK HALFWAY OR MORE DOWN AND HAD TO BE RETURNED BACK TO STATIC POSITION MANUALLY. DROVE TO LOCAL DEALER SINCE WAS ON THE WAY TO INTENDED DESTINATION WHERE PROBLEM STILL OCCURRED AND EACH GEAR ENGAGEMENT BEING IRREGULAR TO NORMAL. LEFT CAR AT DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOR OVERNIGHT DELIVERY SINCE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS CLOSED ON SUNDAYS. CLUTCH PEDAL IS STILL HALFWAY DEPRESSED AS LEFT. *TR

IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT NISSAN RECALLED THE 2007 350Z FOR THE SAME ISSUE (CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER), BUT IT'S APPARENT THAT THE PROBLEM CONTINUES WITH THE 2008 MODEL AND I'M ASKING THAT THE NHTSA INSTRUCT NISSAN TO EXTEND THE FIX TO 2008 MODELS. *TR

IN ADDITION, THE TRANSMISSION STALLS AND IS LESS LIKELY TO GRIND IN SECOND GEAR IN WARM WEATHER CONDITIONS; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE STILL PERSISTS. WHEN SHIFTING FROM 3,500 RPMS TO 4,500 RPMS FROM FIRST TO SECOND GEAR, THE TRANSMISSION WOULD GRIND MORE. THE DEALER ADVISED HIM TO BRING IN THE VEHICLE FOR INSPECTION. THE CONTACT WILL TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THEM WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,500 UPDATED 02/24/09. *LJ WHEN THE CONSUMER SHIFTED TO SECOND GEAR FROM FIRST GEAR, THE TRANSMISSION WOULD GRIND AND WOULD NOT ENGAGE. UPDATED 02/26/09. *JB

Positive 2008 Nissan 350z car reviews

  1. Carlos Reichert 2024-11-25

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new Nagaro Red! It sounds like you made a great choice with the Nismo cat back exhaust - the quality build and sound are definitely worth it. The extra features like the Bose stereo and leather heated seats are also a great addition. Thanks for sharing your positive experience and recommendation!

  2. Brycen McKenzie 2024-10-29

Your car is great and fun to drive! Although it's missing a few features like an iPod dock, memory seats, and usable cup holders, it still has awesome power and looks. I recommend getting the windows tinted and a spoiler for a finished look. The car rides low, so be prepared to replace the windshield a few times. Limited sight visibility takes some getting used to, but you'll get the hang of it. You can expect to get around 30 mpg under normal driving conditions. Overall, it's a great car!

  3. Hiram Kulas 2024-10-06

I bought this car back in July and have put approximately 3300 miles on it since then. I just gave it its first oil change and I must say, this car is an absolute MACHINE! It feels amazing on the road, with great fuel economy and outstanding performance both off the line and from 60+. Since it's the enthusiast version, it comes with limited slip and traction control, which really helps it stick to the road. It's also very maneuverable. I test drove the 2008 Mustang GT, Chevy Cobalt SS supercharged, Mazda rx8, and Mitsubishi eclipse GT, but the 08 350Z Enthusiast just blew them all away. Although it only has 2 seats and room for golf bags, no one can really fit in those so-called '4 seater sports cars' anyway. This is definitely the best car I have driven to date. I'm very happy with it!

  4. Waino Gottlieb 2024-09-20

Hey there! I was on the hunt for a car that was stylish, unique, and zippy, and I found everything I was looking for with the Nismo! It's an absolute blast to drive, and every time I get behind the wheel, it feels like I'm heading to an auto X. I test drove a few other cars, including the STI, G35, and RSX, but I truly believe that the Nismo is the fastest and best handling out of the three. The performance is simply excellent! While the interior isn't super fancy, it's still great because things like leather and power seats add weight. The car has been purpose-built, and it definitely shows. The ride can be a bit bumpy due to the seam-welded body, but if you're like me and love feeling connected to the road, you'll absolutely adore this car. Oh, and the exhaust roars, by the way! I like to joke that it runs on diced lions. :)

  5. Nathaniel Miller 2024-09-09

I owned the base model for 6 months before it was unfortunately totaled in the rain while driving 45 in a 55mph zone. However, I must say that it was one of the best cars I have ever had. Even a Porsche wouldn't have made me much happier. Although, it's important to note that it's really only a car for sunny days. You probably already know why you like the car, but here are some issues to consider. The base model doesn't come with LSD, which is inconceivable for a RWD car of this caliber. Additionally, the brakes aren't as powerful as the engine. Fortunately, the 370 fixed this issue. The car does come with HID, which is nice, and has the same power as the top-end models, including Nismo. However, it doesn't have LSD or VDC, nor does it come with Brembos. I'm currently looking into AWD.
