Common 2004 Nissan 350z problems

The Nissan 350Z 2004 is known for several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Worn Fuel Damper: Many owners of 2003 to 2009 Nissan 350Zs have reported worn fuel dampers that cause ticking noises. This issue can occur while the engine is idling and can also cause the airbag warning light to turn on. A faulty fuel damper can produce a ticking noise, and replacing it on both sides can resolve the problem.
  • Engine Problems: The 2005 Nissan 350Z has several engine-related problems, including stalling, excessive oil consumption, crankshaft and camshaft sensor failure, and tapping noises coming from the engine bay. Some owners have reported hearing their engine knocking at 40,000 miles, which is often dismissed as normal. These issues can affect the car's performance and reliability, and in some cases, may require expensive repairs.
  • Timing Chain Guide and Tensioner Failure: The timing chain guide and tensioner in the 2004 Nissan 350Z can fail, causing the engine to stall while driving. These components are located in the front and back of the engine and can be replaced easily with a 10-millimeter bolt and connector. A faulty timing chain guide and tensioner can cause the engine to stall, and replacing them can fix the issue .
  • Faulty Fuel Damper: A faulty fuel damper can cause loud ticking noises, especially when the engine is idling. This issue can be resolved by replacing the fuel damper, which is a simple fix. However, it is essential to ensure that the noise is not coming from the timing chain, which can also produce a ticking noise .
  • Rear Wheel Hub Bearings: The rear wheel hub bearings in the 2004 Nissan 350Z can wear out, causing a howling or humming noise from the rear of the vehicle. This noise may change pitch from turning left to right, and the wheel may have play when raised up and shaken. Replacing the hub bearings can fix this issue .

In conclusion, the 2004 Nissan 350Z has several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. These issues include throttle body problems, worn fuel dampers, engine problems, timing chain guide and tensioner failure, faulty fuel damper, and rear wheel hub bearings. While some of these issues can be resolved with simple repairs, others may require more extensive and expensive fixes. It is essential to be aware of these common problems when buying or owning a 2004 Nissan 350Z to ensure its longevity and performance.

I RECENTLY CONTACTED NISSAN ABOUT THIS AS I SAW THERE WAS A NISSAN RECALL (NO. R2022) ON THE CAMSHAFT AND CRANKSHAFT SENSORS. HOWEVER, NISSAN INFORMED ME THAT MY CAR WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AS THE RECALL WAS FOR 2003 VEHICLES. THEY STATED THE RECALL WAS VIN SPECIFIC. I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE SYMPTOM SPECIFIC AS THE SYMPTOMS OF THE VEHICLE IN THIS INCIDENT WERE EXACTLY THE SAME AS WHAT WAS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-04-10
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE GAS GAUGE DOES NOT SHOW FULL WHEN THE TANK IS FULL. THIS IS CAUSED BY FAULTY SENSORS IN THE TWO TANKS WHICH NISSAN REFUSES TO ADMIT. I ALONG WITH HUNDREDS OF OTHERS ON ONLINE FORUMS HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE AND HAVE TO SPEND MONEY OUT OF OUR POCKETS ALTHOUGH THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECT. IT SEEMS TO BE WITH THE 2003/2004 MODELS. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-04-01
  • VIN: JN1AZ34D04T
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THOUSAND OF REPORTED CASES OF NOT BEING ABLE TO FUEL UP THE NISSAN 350Z. THE PROBLEM SOURCE IS THE FILLER NECK SHUTTER VALVE. NISSAN IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE FOR YEARS AND HAVE BEEN MAKING CUSTOMER FOOT THE $400-$500 BILL INSTEAD OF TAKING ACTION ON THE FAULTY PART. THE FAULTY SHUTTER VALVE CAUSES FUEL TO SPEW OUT WHILE FILLING THE TANK COVERING THE CAR AND OPERATOR IN FUEL. THE RISKY PART IS PEOPLE ARE CHANGING THE WAY THEY FILL TO TRY TO BYPASS THE ACTION OF THE SHUTTER VALVE BUT ALSO WORKS AGAINST THE SAFETY FEATURES OF THE GASOLINE NOZZLE CAUSING IT TO NOT SHUT OFF WHEN FUEL REACHES MAX. I PERSONALLY CANT ONLY GET 7 GALLONS IN MY CAR BEFORE IT SPRAYS OUT WHICH IS VERY ANNOYING SINCE I HAVE TO FIGHT TO ADD 7 GALLONS OF FUEL EVERYOTHER DAY. I FOUGHT WITH THIS ISSUE IN MY 2003 350Z AND MY 04. IT IS EXTREMELY COMMON AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED YEARS AGO. *TT

EXAMPLES INCLUDE WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS FILLED TO THE POINT OF OVERFLOWING, THE FUEL GAUGE RANDOMLY REPORTS, 3/4, 1/2 1/4 AND SOMETIMES EMPTY. THE FUEL GAUGE RANDOMLY REPORTS DIFFERENT FUEL LEVELS EACH TIME THE IGNITION IS TURNED ON. FURTHER RESEARCH OF THE DESCRIBED MATTER ON VARIOUS ONLINE 350Z FORUMS INDICATE THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTS FOR MANY OTHER 350Z OWNERS, WHICH INDICATES A PRODUCT DEFECT. VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-09-01
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: MORE THAN 50 PERCENT OF 2003-2007 NISSAN'S HAVE ISSUES WITH POWER WINDOWS, EVEN HIGHER PERCENTAGE WITH THE 350Z. STILL NO RECALLS HAVE BEEN ISSUED, IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE SHOULD THE DOOR BE JAMMED THE NEXT ESCAPE ROUTE WOULD BE THREW THE WINDOW. IF THE WINDOW IS NOT OPERATING THEN YOU HAVE A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM. ALSO IN THE CASE THAT THE CAR IS SUBMERGED IN WATER ALL POWER WINDOWS ARE FUNCTIONAL FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS BUT NOT IF THEY ARE CONSTANTLY GETTING STUCK. I HAVE BROUGHT MY 2004 NISSAN 350Z FOR THE SAME REPAIR OF THE DRIVER SIDE POWER WINDOW HALF A DOZEN TIMES WHILE UNDER WARRANTY. ALL THEY MADE WAS ADJUSTMENTS AND OPERATED NORMAL FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS AND THEN BACK TO THE SAME ISSUES TIME AND TIME AGAIN. IT'S ABOUT TIME THEY START REPLACING PARTS BY A RECALL PROCESS. I HOPE THIS DOES NOT FALL ON DEAF EARS. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

Negative 2004 Nissan 350z car reviews

  1. Kelley Weimann 2024-09-14

I have experienced several issues with my 350z, including two transmission replacements within a span of 10,000 miles, as well as problems with the windows and stereo. Despite these challenges, I have taken proactive steps to address these issues and ensure that my vehicle is in top condition. While it has required some time in the shop, I am confident in the measures taken to maintain the quality of my z.

  2. Giuseppe Glover 2024-09-05

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with my Z, which I purchased brand new in March of 2003 from the wonderful team at Thompson Nissan in Doylestown, PA. While the service at the dealership is top-notch, I have noticed an issue with excess road noise that has made driving my Z less enjoyable than I had hoped. It seems that this is a common issue among 2003 Z owners, as many have shared similar experiences. Have you had any similar issues with your Z?

Positive 2004 Nissan 350z car reviews

  1. Demario Kihn 2025-01-01

I was considering American muscle, but for reliability purposes, I opted for Japanese muscle. And I must say, I have not been disappointed. I receive compliments all the time. I even drove this car 3000 miles across the country and loved every minute of it.

  2. Bradly Ferry 2024-10-22

It's been such a blast driving this vehicle! I've had some close calls, but it's all part of the fun. Whenever I'm in Hemet, CA, I love taking my car for a spin on the curvy mountain roads.

  3. Sid Ruecker 2024-10-06

I bought my Z car brand new in mid '04, so I actually got the 2004.5 model with the softer suspension. It was my third Z car, but unfortunately, I had to trade it in due to some issues with the cops. While the interior was well put together and thought out, it was littered with cheap plastic. One downside was the very expensive insurance, and the fact that there was no cargo space at all. As a musician, this was a major issue for me, as I couldn't take anything with me. Additionally, I experienced unnecessary razzing by the cops, which even resulted in jail time. The car had some mechanical issues as well, such as bad rear bearings, leaky rear fluid, tire problems, check engine light, and two sets of brakes. When I traded it in after 3.5 years, no one wanted it, and those that did offered me only $14k, despite the fact that I had paid $40k for it.

Although some people may complain about the limited luggage space or the fact that it can only seat two people, it's important to remember that this car was designed for driving pleasure, not hauling cargo. In my experience, nothing compares to the sheer joy of driving my Z. I've driven a Mustang GT, WRX, 3 Series (2003), A4, and even a C5 Vette, but none of them have been as enjoyable as my Z. Plus, I'm getting great gas mileage at 23+ mpg!

I hope you're enjoying your new car as much as I have! Just a heads up, if you're not a fan of attention or have a heavy foot, this car may not be the best fit for you. It's definitely a fast ride and only seats two people, but the mileage is impressive for a sports coupe with this much power. While long trips can be a bit tiring, you can easily customize the car with bigger rims, tires, and other style touches. If you're a driving enthusiast, this car is perfect for you!
