2001 Ford Escort problems
The North American version of the Ford Escort is a range of cars that was sold by Ford from the 1981 to 2003 model years. The direct successor of the Ford Pinto, the Escort also largely overtook the role of the European-imported Ford Fiesta as the smallest vehicle in the Ford model line in North America. Produced across three generations, the first generation was a subcompact; the latter two generations were compact cars. Becoming highly successful in the marketplace, the Escort became the best-selling car in the United States after 1982, a position it would hold for much of the 1980s.
Produced across three generations, the Escort was the first world car developed by Ford, with the first-generation American Escort designed alongside Ford of Europe, who transitioned the Escort Mk III to front-wheel drive. During its production, the Escort also underwent a wide use of platform sharing and rebranding. The first generation served as the basis of the longer-wheelbase Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz, the two-seat Ford EXP/Mercury LN7 and was rebranded as the Mercury Lynx. The second generation was introduced for 1991, growing into the compact segment. Moving away from a shared design with Ford of Europe, the Escort now shared a platform with the Mazda 323 and sharing a body with the Ford Laser (a model line sold in Asia and Oceania); the Mercury Lynx was replaced by the Mercury Tracer. For 1997, the third generation served as an extensive redesign of the previous-generation sedan; the Escort ZX2 two-door was introduced, with the Mercury Tracer adopting a similar redesign.
Ford introduced the Ford Focus in North America for 2000 as its third "world car", phasing it in as the successor of the Escort. After 2000, the four-door Escort was moved primarily to fleet sales (with the coupe remaining available); production ended entirely after the 2002 model year. In contrast to the first-generation American Escort and Escort Mk III of Ford of Europe (and the Mondeo/Contour and Mercury Mystique), the Focus adopted a much larger degree of commonality between its European and North American variants, in effect, becoming the original world car Ford had originally envisioned with the Escort.
During its entire production, the Escort was produced by Wayne Stamping & Assembly in (Wayne, Michigan) and the first generation was also produced by Edison Assembly in (Edison, New Jersey), San Jose Assembly Plant in (Milpitas, California), and Oakville Assembly in (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) while the second and third generations were also produced by Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly in (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico).

Common 2001 Ford Escort problems
The Ford Escort, produced from 1990 to 2003, has been known for several common problems that have affected its reliability and performance. The most frequently reported issues are related to the engine, electrical system, fuel system, and transmission.
- Engine Issues: The 1999 Ford Escort has the highest number of engine-related complaints, with 96 reports. Among the most common problems are dropped valve seat cylinder #4, rough running, and idling roughly, which can cause the engine to stall.
- Electrical Issues: Electrical problems are the second most common issue in the Ford Escort, with 29 complaints reported across all model years. These issues include brake lights staying on even when the car is turned off, and the engine not running after maintenance work was done on the chassis.
- Fuel System Issues: The fuel system is another trouble spot for the Ford Escort, with 25 complaints reported. The most common problem is the fuel pump not working properly, causing the engine to not start.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems are the fourth most common issue in the Ford Escort, with 15 complaints reported. The most common problem is the transmission not shifting properly, causing the car to jerk or hesitate when accelerating.
- Rust and Corrosion: The Ford Escort is notorious for rust and corrosion issues, particularly in the rear chassis rails, rear wheel-arches, bottom of the fuse box, and under the battery. This can lead to expensive repairs, and if left unattended, can cause the car to fail its MOT test.
- Suspension and Steering: After 50,000 miles, the shock absorbers and suspension bushes can wear, causing MoT test failure. Replacing them is not an expensive job, but the cost can add up if all of them need to be replaced.
In summary, the Ford Escort has several common problems that can affect its reliability and performance. These issues include engine, electrical, fuel system, and transmission problems, as well as rust and corrosion. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and servicing can help prevent some of these problems, but it is important to be aware of the potential issues and budget for repairs accordingly.
Are Ford Escort good cars?
The Escort has been Ford's bread-and-butter car for over 15 years. Think of it as the car that brings consumers into the Ford family. The Escort's low price, decent reliability and above-average crash test scores have consistently offered recent college grads and young families an attractive set of American wheels.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-03-03
- VIN: 3FAFP13P31R
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I PURCHASED ALL FOUR MICHELINS ABOUT A YEAR AGO. SINCE THEN I HAD TWO BLOWOUTS ON THE REAR DRIVE-SIDE TIRE AND ONE ON THE FRONT DRIVER-SIDE TIRE. ALL THREE BLEW OUT ON THE SIDEWALLS, TWO OF WHICH WERE ON THE INNER SIDE SIDEWALL AND ONE ON THE OUTER SIDE SIDEWALL. THERE WERE NO NAILS, GLASS, OR OTHER DEBRIS RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE BLOWOUTS. THE FIRST ONE NOT ONLY LEFT A GAPPING HOLE ON THE INNER SIDE SIDEWALL, BUT IT GOT SO HOT IT ALSO BLEW OUT THE TIRE STEM AND WAS SMOKING FOR A GOOD HOUR AFTERWARDS. THEY REPLACED THAT TIRE WITH A BRAND NEW MICHELIN OF THE SAME TYPE. THEN THE SECOND BLEW OUT HAPPENED ON THAT NEW TIRE SEVERAL MONTHS LATER ALSO LEAVING A GAPPING HOLE ON THE INNER SIDE SIDEWALL AND IT WAS SO HOT THE GUYS COULDN'T EVEN TOUCH IT TO FIX IT UNTIL THEY DOUSED IT WITH WATER. THEY REPLACED IT WITH A BRAND NEW MICHELIN AS WELL. THEN SEVERAL MONTHS LATER (TODAY) THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE BLEW SIMILARLY. I DID NOT CRASH AND THERE WAS NO FIRE, HOWEVER THERE WAS A LOT OF SMOKE AND THESE INSTANCES COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN A LOT WORSE SINCE I WAS ON THE FREEWAY EACH TIME, BUT I'M LUCKY THEY WERE NOT. I DEFINITELY FEEL WE ARE DEALING WITH SOME DEFECTIVE TIRES HERE. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-06-02
- VIN: 3FAHP31391R
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I HAVE A 2001 FOCUS ZX3 - 5SP THAT TENDS TO STALL WHEN THE AC IS ON. BUT IT MAY NOT STALL DURING THE "INITIAL" USE PERIOD. WITHOUT WARNING, IT WILL STALL AFTER THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF AND THEN RESTARTED. MY SERVICE SHOP CHECKED THE COMPUTER CODES FOR A PROBLEM AND NOTHING CAME UP. YESTERDAY, IT WAS DRIVEN FOR ABOUT 30MINS WITH THE AC ON (OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE AROUND 80+ DEGREES). THE VEHICLE RAN FINE WITH THE RPMS NORMAL WHEN STOPPED. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF FOR ABOUT 90 MINS. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO RESTART IT WOULD STALL. TO GET STARTED I NEEDED TO KEEP FOOT ON GAS PEDAL (TO MAINTAIN A HIGH ENOUGH RPM TO PREVENT THE STALL). IF I DID NOT KEEP THE RPMS UP, VEHICLE WOULD STALL. WHILE DRIVING AND STOPPING, I NEEDED TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL TO MAINTAIN THE RPMS. (THIS CAN BE CHALLENGING WITH A 5-SPD.) THE VEHICLE WAS THEN PARKED FOR OVER FOUR HOURS. IT THEN STARTED WITHOUT PROBLEM AND RAN NORMALLY. DURING THIS PERIOD I DID NOT HAVE THE AC ON. I SEE THAT THIS MAY BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE FOCUS. HOWEVER, NEITHER FORD MOTOR'S CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE NOR THE LOCAL FORD DEALER ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A FORD DEALERSHIP (ECHELON FORD) ON 6/8/10 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY COULD NOT RECREATE IT. I WAS CHARGED $108 FOR THE SHOP TIME AND STILL HAVE NO TECHNICAL ANSWER TO THIS CRITICAL AND POTENTIALLY FATAL PROBLEM... *TR

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2001 ZX2 that I bought used for $9000 back in 2003. Even though the tape player didn't work (who uses tapes anyway, right?), the radio is still good and the AC is super cold! It had 32,000 miles on it when I bought it, and now it has 75,000 miles and still runs great. The gas mileage is awesome, and I've only had to replace the serpentine belt once (although it needs to be replaced again soon). Overall, this car has been a fantastic first car that saw me through college, and I plan on keeping it until it dies. Thanks for letting me share!
-
It was perfect! I loved it. It is the best car I ever had. My son wants one too!
-
I got the car in March and it's been a gem. I just wanted to clarify that it's actually a Ford ZX2, not an Escort. It runs amazingly well and the 0-60 times are even better than Civics, Cavo's, and those darn Eclipses!
-
This is a fantastic car to start with! It's cute, fun, and who doesn't love filling up the gas tank for only $15? Learning to drive a stick shift was a breeze with this car. It's very easy to handle and the ride is smooth. It's a big hit with parents because it's rated well by consumer reports!
-
ZX2 looks good, drives well, and is very fuel-efficient. I've owned it for almost 4 years and haven't had to make a single repair. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a sporty and reliable smaller car.

I encountered several issues with this car, including the need to replace the AC control valve, starter, and fuel pump. However, I am confident in my decision to not purchase another Ford Escort ZX2.
Jordy Labadie 2024-08-01
A very good first car for younger drivers. It has enough power for safe handling but not too much to get out of control. It runs very well, is highly reliable and has excellent fuel economy.
Curtis McCullough 2024-05-10
Although we bought this car used, we have taken great care of it. Unfortunately, we have experienced some issues recently, including the AC going out, the transmission needing to be rebuilt, and the engine failing. Despite these setbacks, we are confident in our ability to handle the situation. We understand that the warranty has expired, but we are willing to invest in a new engine to get the car back on the road. We have had some trouble with the tires and rims, but we have taken steps to address these issues. We are committed to maintaining this car and ensuring that it runs smoothly for years to come.
Nicolas O'Connell 2024-04-29
My first new car, not too bad. I'm glad I chose it! I love the look of it and it handles well. Plus, it gets great gas mileage. The interior could be a little more comfortable, but overall it's a great car. Although I had some issues with the power windows, doors, and hood release, I'm still happy with my purchase. The speakers could be better, but that's a minor issue. And I have to say, it's a very smooth ride!
Dereck Heathcote 2024-02-25
Great car when it's running! It has great fuel efficiency and good comfort. However, I have had the transmission rebuilt once already, and unfortunately, it seems to be on its way out again. It's a shame, considering it's only got 39,000 miles on it. I've heard that some other people have had similar problems with cars from around the same year as mine.
