Common 2006 Nissan 350z problems
The Nissan 350Z, produced from 2003 to 2009, is known for its superb comfort and outstanding performance, as well as above-average reliability. However, it does suffer from a few common problems that owners have reported.
One of the most common issues is related to the throttle body, which is prone to carbon buildup in some units of the 2003 to 2009 Nissan 350Z. This buildup can lead to high idle, erratic idle, and intermittent power surging. These issues occur when the Nissan 350Z's computer registers too much air and takes a while to adjust, causing the idle to bounce from low to high and the vehicle to surge forward. Some owners have resolved this problem by disconnecting the battery for an hour and resetting the computer, while others have had to replace the throttle body entirely.
Another common problem is worn fuel dampers, which can cause ticking noises in the engine compartment while the car is idling. This issue has been reported by many owners of 2003 to 2009 Nissan 350Zs. The fuel damper can produce a ticking noise when the engine is idling, and in some cases, it can cause the airbag warning light to turn on. Replacing the worn fuel damper on both sides has resolved this problem for most owners.
The 2005 Nissan 350Z has a number of engine-related problems, including stalling, excessive oil consumption, crankshaft and camshaft sensor failure, and tapping noises coming from the engine bay. Some owners have reported hearing their engine knocking at 40,000 miles, but have been told that this is "normal" and doesn't need fixing.
The 2006 Nissan 350Z has been rated as the worst model year for engine problems, with the most reported problem being grinding between gears. The average cost to fix this issue is $3,000, with an average mileage of 30,000 miles.
In addition to these specific issues, the Nissan 350Z has some common problems that affect high-mileage vehicles. These include synchro wear, timing chain guide and tensioner failure, and broken fuel dampers, which mainly affect 2003-2006 350Zs. Other issues, such as oil consumption, sensor failure, and clicking driveshafts, can affect all 350Zs.
In summary, while the Nissan 350Z is a reliable and dependable sports car, it does have its fair share of problems. Regular maintenance and careful handling can help ensure a long service life for this vehicle.

WENT BACK AND LEFT THE CAR THERE FOR A FEW HOURS. THE NEXT DAY MAY 11TH, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON AND HAD TO BRING THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED DUE TO A WIDESPREAD DEFECT WHERE COOLANT LEAKS INTO THE TRANSMISSION, CAUSING TRANSMISSION FAILURE. WHEN THAT COOLANT MIXES WITH TRANSMISSION FLUID IT CREATES A TOXIC HELL STEW THAT DESTROYS THE TRANSMISSION. GIVEN THE OCTOBER 2012 CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT, NISSAN IS ASKING THAT I PAY $3,000 TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION. I DID ALSO PAY FOR ANOTHER PART, WHICH DID COST ANOTHER $250. SO WITHIN A WEEK I PAID $4,450 TO FIX MY CAR, WHILE I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THIS ISSUE BY NISSAN AND I AM THE FIRST OWNER OF THIS CAR.
AIR BAGS,WHEELS PROBLEM

- Summary: I RECENTLY BOUGHT A USED VEHICLE AT NORFOLK MOTORSPORTS IN NORFOLK VA. THEY HAD BOUGHT THE VEHICLE THRU INSPECTION AND IT DID NOT PASS IT, ACCORDING TO THE MANAGER, IT WAS MISSING THE AIR BAG ON THE PASSENGER AND THEY WAS GOING TO BUY THE WHOLE COMPONENT FOR IT INSTEAD. I HAD A MEETING WITH THE OWNER OF THE COMPANY ALONG WITH THE MANAGER, SALESPERSON; THE OWNER HAD STATED TO ME AND MY FIANC AT THE TIME THAT HE COULD HAVE EASILY CLIPPED THE WIRE TO THE SEAT AND IT WOULD PASS INSPECTION. ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER I FINALLY RECEIVED THE VEHICLE AND NOW THE PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT IS SHOWING THAT ITS ON "OFF", TO ME, THIS INDICATES THAT THEY TRIPPED THE WIRE TO LET IT PASS INSPECTION. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THEY TRIPPED THE WIRES FOR THE TIRES LIGHTS ON IT. I HAD ASKED FOR MONEY BACK BUT WOULD NOT GIVE IT TO ME SINCE IT IS CONSIDERED A "LEMON". THEY ARE ONLY WILLING TO GIVE ME A TRADE-IN INSTEAD. TILL THIS DAY I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE TITLE BECAUSE AT THE TIME OF SALE THEY TOLD ME I HAD TO CALL THE DAY BEFORE AND THEIR ADMINISTRATIVE PERSONNEL WOULD GIVE IT TO ME. THEY HAVE BEEN GIVING THE RUN-AROUND ON THIS VEHICLE THAT I HAVE PAID IN CASH FOR. THEY NOW WANT TO ME TO PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT IS THE" ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT", ALONG WITH ANOTHER LIGHT ABOUT THE TIRES. I AM AFRAID THEY WILL ALSO TRIP THE WIRES ON THAT VEHICLE SO IT WILL PASS INSPECTION. THEY TRYING TO FORCE MY HAND INTO SOMETHING THAT I DO NOT WANT INSTEAD OF GIVING MY CASH BACK THAT I GAVE TO THEM FROM THE BANK. *TR

POWER TRAIN,AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-05-17
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JN1AZ36A26M
- Components: POWER TRAIN,AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: THE DATE IS WHEN I RECEIVED MY CAR FROM THE BODY SHOP AFTER 3-CAR WRECK. DROVE IT TO WORK AND THE CAR HAD NO POWER TO CLIMB A HILL. CALLED INSURANCE COMPANY, TOOK IT BACK THEY DID NO REPAIRS TO THE ENGINE, SO IT WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS THE CAR WASN'T DOWNSHIFTING PROPERLY, THEN IT STARTED MAKING A SOUND LIKE IT WAS STUCK IN A SPIN CYCLE AND SHOOT OUT CAUSING THE CAR TO GO FASTER. TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP NOTHING. SO WITH THE CAR DOING THE SPIN CYCLE AND SHOOTING OUT FAST, IT STARTED MAKING THIS THUMPING NOISE FROM UNDER THE HOOD WHEN COMING TO A STOP. THIS WAS SO FREQUENT I THOUGHT THE ENGINE WAS ABOUT DROP OUT, SO I TOOK IT TO TRANSMISSION SHOP; THEY FOUND A CODE FOR AN ELECTRICAL SOLENOID AND RESET IT. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. A WEEK LATER IT DID BUT ALL THE TIME. TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, THIS TIME THEY WITNESS THE PROBLEM AND CALLED THE CORPORATION TECH'S; WHO RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE IDLE RELEARN AND ODOMETER CLUSTER (MILES OFF). THEY WERE REPLACED BUT MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, INSURANCE COMPANY SENT A THIRD PARTY INSPECTOR OUT. HE FOUND OUT THAT THE TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE ARE BAD AND IS NOT RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT. I CALLED NISSAN CORPORATION RECEIVED A CLAIM NUMBER, A MONTH LATER THEY CALLED TO SAY THEY ARE NOT GOING TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP TO CHECKOUT MY PARKING BRAKE BECAUSE THE LIGHT FOR IT DIDN'T COME ON WITH THE OLD ODOMETER CLUSTER BECAUSE I DROVE MY CAR HOME FROM THEIR SHOP AND IT WAS ENGAGED BUT NOTHING INDICATING THAT IT WAS. MY AIRBAGS DID NOT EXPLODE FROM THE WRECK EITHER AND ALSO THE CAR TIRES WILL NOT MAINTAIN THE PROPER AIR PRESSURE. HAD TO GET MY OIL RECHECK SEVERAL TIMES AFTER GETTING THE OIL CHANGED. THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE HERE IN HAWAII WITH ALL THIS TRAFFIC, STILL AT THE DEALERSHIP. I HAVE THE REPORT FROM THE INSPECTOR IF YOU WANT IT. *TR
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-12-24
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING TO VISIT MY GRANDSONS ON CHRISTMAS EVE, THE REAR DRIVE WHEEL BROKE. THE WHEEL BROKE FROM THE CAR AND TRAVEL DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN AND GET IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I COULD ONLY SIT HELPLESS AS I WATCH THE BROKEN WHEEL BOUNCE DOWN THE HIGHWAY. THE WHEEL CAME TO A STOP MORE THAN 400 YARDS. A QUOTE FROM THE CHP OFFICER, "IT NEVER HAPPENS THIS WAY. USUALLY THE WHEEL LANDS ON SOMEONE ELSE'S CAR CAUSING A ACCIDENT." THIS IS THE SECOND WHEEL THAT HAS BROKE ON MY CAR. SUMMER 2011 I HAD TO REPLACE A CRACKED WHEEL WHEN GETTING NEW TIRES. THE REMAINING TWO WHEELS ON THE CAR HAVE BEEN LOOKED AT AND CRACKS HAVE BEEN FOUND. SINCE MY INSURANCE WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF NEW WHEELS, I'M FORCED TO REPLACE THEM MYSELF. WHILE DOING SOME INVESTIGATIVE WORK, I HAVE FOUND MORE THAN A DOZEN CASES JUST LIKE MINE. THE TIRE SHOP I VISITED TODAY SAID THEY HAVE HAD 3 OTHER NISSAN 350Z - 2006 WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. HOW MANY CASES HAVE NOT BEEN REPORTED? NISSAN WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND RECALL THEIR BAD BATCH OF WHEELS FROM 2006. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE NISSAN RESPONSIBLE AND RECALL THESE WHEELS? *TR

I HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED AND FOUND ALL 4 CHROME WHEELS HAD CRACKS AND WAS ADVISED TO PARK VEHICLE AS IT WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. I CONTACTED THE SERVICE MANAGER AT MY DEALERSHIP AND HE ADVISED THAT THE RIMS ON MY VEHICLE WERE SENT OUT TO BE CHROMED BY SOMEONE ELSE OTHER THAN NISSAN CAUSING NISSAN NOT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE CRACKED RIMS. THIS VEHICLE, A TOURING ROADSTER 350Z WAS BOUGHT NEW FROM A NISSAN DEALERSHIP WITH THESE CHROME RIMS ALREADY ON THEM, THIS OTHER DEALERSHIP ALSO HAPPENS TO BE OWNED BY THE CURRENT DEALERSHIP I GO TO. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THE DEALERSHIP ALSO WOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE BECAUSE THEY ONLY WARRANTY THIS FOR 3YEARS/36,000. MY VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 19,600 MILES ON IT. *TR

VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-11-18
- VIN: JN1AZ34E16M
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING IN A HEAVY RAIN, WITH THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ON A MEDIUM SPEED, THE WIPERS STOPPED. BY TURNING OFF AND ON THE WIPERS, I COULD NOT GET THEM TO RESTART. WHILE TRYING TO GET TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD, THE WIPERS BEGAN WORKING AGAIN ON THEIR OWN. THEY WERE OFF FOR APPROXIMATELY 45 SECONDS. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN, APPROXIMATELY 1 MONTH LATER. IN A 45 MINUTE DRIVE HOME, IN HEAVY RAIN, THE WIPERS QUIT ON 3 OCCASIONS. EACH STOPPAGE SEEM TO LAST FOR 30-45 SECONDS. THEY WOULD RESTART ON THEIR OWN, THERE DIDN'T SEEM TO BE ANYTHING THAT I COULD DO TO START THEM. I TOOK THE CAR TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO FIX. THEY SAID THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM AND TO BRING IT BACK WHEN IT WAS HAPPENING ALL THE TIME. I TOLD THEM THAT IT WAS TOO DANGEROUS AND I DID NOT WANT TO DRIVE IT IN THE RAIN AS IT WAS TOO HAZARDOUS. THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AS THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH NISSAN CORPORATE, THEY HAD THEIR TECH DEPARTMENT TRY AND TROUBLESHOOT WITH THE DEALERSHIP. THEY FOUND NOTHING. I NOW HAVE A VEHICLE WHICH I FEEL IS EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS IN INCLEMENT WEATHER AND HAVE HAD NO SUPPORT FROM THE MANUFACTURER IN RESOLVING IT.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-10-06
- VIN: JN1AZ34D66M
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: ON 10/6/2010 I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND EVALUATION OF PROBLEM IN SHIFTING MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION HAD PROBLEM WITH 1-2 AND 4-3 SHIFTS WITH GRINDING AND DIFFICULTY SHIFTING. THE CAR WAS FOUND TO HAVE A FAULTY TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO FOUND TO HAVE, AS STATED BY THE TECH, NO VISIBLE OIL IN THE ENGINE. THIS INDICATES A CONSUMPTION OF 5+ QUARTS WITHIN 6500 MILES. A TSB BY NISSAN: NTB07-088 DATES BACK TO 2007 OF HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION. THE NEWEST TSB (NTB07-088D) ONLY REPLACES THE SHORT-BLOCK OF THE ENGINE AS WAS DONE BY THE DEALER. THIS HAS NOT ADDRESSED THE DAMAGE OF THE ENGINE DUE TO OIL STARVATION, AS THE TSB COVERS ONLY PARTIAL OIL CONSUMPTION, NOT NEAR TOTAL AS IN THIS CASE. AS OF THE REPAIR, THE ENGINE HAS A ROUGHER IDLE AND THE NEW TRANSMISSION IS STILL DIFFICULT TO SHIFT FROM NOW 1-2 AND 5-6. *TR

My GT finally arrived last week, and I've been spending the past week driving it around town. It's the best car I've ever driven, and for the money, the best deal. I absolutely love this car!
-
Fun to drive, very reliable! The only problem I had was with the driver's side window motor. I added a cold air intake and high flow exhaust, and now it gets 24.5 MPG. The track model handles really well with its 18/19 inch wheels, bimbro brakes, and stiff suspension.
-
I'm pretty happy with my Z! As the second owner of a 2006 GT convertible with only ~15K miles, she's like new. I love almost everything about it - the good looks, the fun driving experience, and the quality fit and finish. While the mileage isn't the best, it's to be expected. It's a great car as a second vehicle, but I'm not sure I'd want it as my primary driver. I really enjoy the three F's - fast, fun, and did I mention fast? The top is easy to put up and down. Although the '06 model is missing USB and i-connectivity, I had Sirius/XM installed and it sounds great on the Bose system. I can't wait for my next Z!
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2006 350Z (base) that I bought back in August of that year. I still absolutely love every second behind the wheel! It's such a fun car to drive, even around town. Plus, the only time it's ever in the shop is for routine maintenance, which is great. Since I live in the mid-Atlantic region, I use it year-round, but I did get a set of good winter tires, which are a must if the Z is ever going to see snow. The gas mileage I get driving around town (~19 combined) is decent for the class of car and engine, but nothing spectacular. While the car is comfortable for shorter drives, I start to feel anything over about 4 hours (mainly in my right leg since the base model does not have cruise control). Thanks for listening!
-
I did a lot of research before buying my car and was aware that oil consumption could be an issue with some 06 Zs. However, I decided it was worth the risk as the Nissan warranty gave me peace of mind. Unfortunately, in Jan 2009, my car started making weird noises and suffered a loss of power and oil pressure. Despite regularly servicing my car at the dealer, the service manager determined that the engine needed to be replaced under recall. It took 2 weeks, and my car has been in the shop more times than our Porsche and BMW combined! We've had issues with the clutch assembly, brakes, electrical system, trunk release, passenger power window, TPMS, heat shield, and wheel hub. The car has been kept at the dealer for days or even weeks at a time, and while they didn't provide a loaner car, they did offer a shuttle service. Thankfully, we have multiple cars!

I've been driving my manual 2006 350Z Touring Convertible for 4 years now and it has been a fun experience. However, I was expecting higher quality and reliability for the price I paid ($40k). It's a great car to drive, with its good power and mileage, and the styling always turns heads. Although I mainly use it for commuting, I have had a blast pushing the speed and cornering a few times. On the downside, I had to replace the stock tires after only 26k miles, which cost me $700. I have also experienced some reliability problems, including a cracked drive shaft, a cracked convertible top, bubbled coating on both door handles, a failed convertible top mechanism, belt replacement after 2.5 years, and interior paint degrading and peeling off. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my car and appreciate its unique features.
