The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. The nameplate Ioniq is a portmanteau of ion and unique. It is marketed as the first Hyundai automobile to be offered without a standard internal combustion engine, but rather sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric variants.
The Ioniq Hybrid debuted in South Korea in January 2016, with all three variants debuting at 2016 Geneva and New York auto shows. The hybrid variant launched in its home market in February 2016, followed by the electric model in July 2016. The plug-in hybrid version followed in February 2017.
From its first model year (2017) through the 2019 model year, the Ioniq Electric had been the EPA's most efficient vehicle with a rated fuel economy of 136 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (24.8 kWh/100 mi; 15.4 kWh/100 km). The Ioniq Blue Hybrid version has been rated at 4.1 L/100 km (58 mpg‑US), making it the most fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle to be mass-produced.
Following its discontinuation in South Korea in 2021, production of the Ioniq ended in July 2022 in favour of battery electric lineup of Ioniq-badged models starting from the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 sedan with Ioniq 7 to follow.

- Summary: The 12v system in my vehicle is defective, resulting in the vehicle failing to operate. Since I have only operated it about 4 times, i am unable to state whether the issue would occur while the car was being driven. I have had the car checked by the dealer twice, and it is now at the service department with an unknown date for "repair". The diagnosis from the second dealer service department directly conflicts with what the first dealer service department said. Additionally, I have discovered that this is a known issue with this vehicle model, and Hyundai has failed to address it. I have filed a formal complaint with Hyundai, as the vehicle is still under manufacturers warranty. Incidentally, there is a newly issued recall that I suspect is related to the 12v system, as well.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

- Summary: When ABS engages briefly on a wet surface, there is an incomplete transition from regenerative braking to friction brakes, resulting in a hard pedal that does not actually engage the brakes. This is very dangerous and I have experienced this loss of braking force multiple times when stopping in the rain and a tire is on a slippery manhole cover or crosswalk line. Braking force is reduced significantly for a second or two until the friction brakes are engaged. If the vehicle is rolling in Neutral, the friction brakes work as designed with no delay. It is only during normal driving when the regenerative braking is involved that this issue can be replicated.

IN PARTICULAR, I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE DEALERS REPLACE A WATER PUMP AND RELATED ASSEMBLIES FOR A TOTAL OF 3 REPLACEMENTS SINCE AUG. THIS WAS THEIR EFFORT TO DEAL WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ISSUES THAT HAVE RESULTED CONTINUED INCIDENTS OF ERRATIC AND UNCONTROLLED APPLICATION OF THE REGENERATIVE BREAKING (NOT BY DRIVER), SHUTTING OFF OF ANY ABILITY TO ACCELERATE THE CAR WHILE DRIVING, AND COMPLETE SHUTOFFS OF THE CAR WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAYS, I.E. ALL LIGHTS OFF, NO RESPONSE FROM INSTRUMENTS EXCEPT FOR BREAKING TO A STOP. I REALIZE YOU MAY BE SHORT HANDED DEALING WITH COMPLAINTS, BUT I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY CONTACT SINCE FIRST REPORTING THIS AND WAS WONDERING IF I SHOULD EXPECT ANY? - Summary: THE CAR WAS STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT WHEN WE WERE STRUCK FROM BEHIND BY A FORD F150. WE WERE PUSHED INTO THE STOPPED VEHICLE IN FRONT OF US (VERY MINOR DAMAGE IN FRONT). I WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND MY HEAD BOUNCED OFF OF THE DASHBOARD. MY DAUGHTER WAS IN THE SEAT BEHIND THE DRIVER AND HER HEAD WAS BOUNCED OFF THE BACK OF THE DRIVERS SEAT. THE SEAT BELTS KEPT US IN OUR SEATS BUT THE SHOULDER BELTS FAILED TO ENGAGE. THE CAR HAS SINCE BEEN TOTALED DUE TO DAMAGE FROM THE REAR.

- Summary: I HAVE HAD 4 INCIDENTS SO FAR OVER THE LAST MONTH, ALL LASTING UNDER 5 SECONDS. IN EACH CASE, THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING SWITCHES TO A DIFFERENT LEVEL WITHOUT ANY INPUT FROM THE USER. THIS PRESENTS AS WHAT FEELS LIKE A LEVEL 3 (STRONG) BRAKING WHEN NONE WAS ON AND NO FOOT IS NEAR THE BRAKE, OR IF THE REGEN BRAKING WAS TURNED ON (IN ONE CASE TO LEVEL 1), IT SHUTS OFF MOMENTARILY. DURING THESE INCIDENTS, THE BEHAVIOR IS ALSO IRREGULARLY CHANGING BETWEEN FOR EXAMPLE HARD BREAKING (LEVEL 3) FOR A SECOND AND THEN FLUTTERING IRREGULARLY BETWEEN HARD AND LOW LEVELS. IN ONE INCIDENT, THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT OFF (AND STAYED IN NEUTRAL) AFTER AN INCIDENT HAPPENED WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. THE CAR THEN GLIDED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AS NORMAL. IN EACH CASE, THE INCIDENT OCCURS WHILE IN MOTION, NOT TOUCHING THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT MAY BE CURRENTLY SET ON DIFFERENT LEVELS OF REGEN BRAKING (IT'S HAPPENED BOTH IN LEVEL 0 (NONE) AND 1 (LOW). THE BEHAVIOUR IS NOT HOWEVER TRIGGER BY MANALLY CHANGING THE REGEN LEVEL BUT SEEMS TO JUST SPONTANEOUSLY HAPPEN WHILE SMOOTH DRIVING. MOST CASES OCCURRED ON CITY STREETS BUT ONE OCCURRED ON A SMOOTH HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 60MPH. NONE OF THE INCIDENTS HAVE CREATED AN ACCIDENT AS I WAS NOT VERY CLOSE TO ANY CAR IN ANY CASE. I DO HAVE TWO INVOICES FROM SEPARATE CAR DEALERS LOOKING AT THE PROBLEM. IN THE FIRST CASE, THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY ERROR CODES BUT THEY FOUND THE WATER PUMP WAS LEAKING AND REPLACED THAT (PER A TSB). FOLLOWING ANOTHER INCIDENT I TOOK IT TO A SECOND DEALER WHO ALSO DID NOT SEE AN ERROR CODE NOR COULD FIND A PROBLEM. THIS, EVEN AFTER THE "EV" WARNING LIGHT CAME ON FOR A FULL DRIVE TWO DAYS PREVIOUS.

- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Ioniq electric vehicles. An unstable electrical ground may cause the vehicle to enter a fail-safe mode with reduced acceleration and power. In certain conditions while in fail-safe mode, the vehicle may accelerate after the gas pedal is released.
- Consequence: Unexpected acceleration following gas pedal release can increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will update the EPCU (Electric Power Control Unit) software and repair the ground wiring, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 9, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 215.

If you're looking for the best value, I highly recommend buying through Costco's designated dealer. I found that no other dealer could match their prices. While the 2018 Leaf is priced similarly, keep in mind that they charge an additional $2k for the fast on-board charger. As someone who isn't very tech-savvy, I was really impressed by the lifetime battery warranty that comes with the Hyundai. Plus, even though the EPA range for this car is 124 miles, I've found that I can get up to 152 miles when it's fully charged.

I leased my 2018 brand new California and it will be 2 years old in November 2020. I can get a full charge for summer which gives me 158 miles and 140 miles for winter. This is perfect for my 5-day office work driving. The main battery has a lifetime warranty. The car is very spirited off the line and the regen at level 3 is fantastic. Additionally, the AC, heater, and defroster can be programmed via the Hyundai website. I am very satisfied with my purchase and will definitely buy again. I have had no problems or maintenance issues except for tire rotation.
