The Nissan Armada (retrospectively referred to unofficially as the Nissan Pathfinder Armada) is a full-size SUV manufactured by Nissan for the North American market. From 2003 to 2015, the first-generation Armada was assembled in Canton, Mississippi based on the Nissan Titan. From mid-2016 onwards, the second-generation Armada has been built in Yukuhashi, Kyushu, Japan and shares the same platform as the Nissan Patrol, with American-specific modifications, and went on sale in late mid-2016 as a 2017 model. A luxury version of the Armada has been sold as the Infiniti QX80 (originally QX56).

First generation (TA60; 2004)

The 2004 model Pathfinder Armada was unveiled on April 17, 2003, at the New York International Auto Show. Developed under Carlos Ghosn's NRP (Nissan Revival Plan), development was done in September 1999 to 2003 under lead designers Shiro Nakamura and Diane Allen and chief engineers Yuzo Sakita and Larry Dominique. In January 2001, a final exterior design by Giovanny Arroba had been approved by Sakita, Allen, Nakamura, and Nissan executive management, with the final design freeze being completed in July 2001. It is assigned the platform code TA60.

Prototypes based on the Y61 Patrol were hand-assembled as mules from 2001, with the first TA60-specific prototypes being completed and sent to testing in early 2002. Design patents were filed in 2003, with production starting on August 14, 2003, and going on sale on October 1, 2003.

The Armada had a 5.6 L VK56DE V8 engine that made 305 hp (227 kW) and 385 lb⋅ft (522 N⋅m) of torque. This was mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, and the Armada had a choice of either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. There are some Armadas that are capable of using E85. It has a towing capacity of up to 9,000 lb (4,000 kg).

The rear door handles are installed on the "C" pillar as part of a Nissan design tradition that started with the 1986 Nissan Pathfinder. When the four-door Pathfinder was introduced, Nissan chose to conceal the door handles as a part of the "C" pillar trim to visually make it appear like a two-door truck with a camper shell, with conventional door handles on the front doors.

The switch to the Armada name occurred in September 2004 for the 2005 model year, where it received new badges without "Pathfinder." The 2005 model year also included a backup camera.

MY STEERING WHEEL IS NOT STRAIGHT, EVEN AFTER THE RECENT WHEEL ALIGNMENT WHEN THEY DISCOVERED THAT I DID NOT HAVE CAMBERS INSTALLED ON THE FRONT END. THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEVER ASSISTED ME, AND NOW NISSAN IS OFFERING TO REPURCHASE THE VEHICLE, BUT WOULD LIKE FOR ME TO PAY THEM $18K. I AND MY FAMILY ARE COMPLETED EXHAUSTED WITH THIS MATTER, ESPECIALLY AFTER OUR TRIP THAT SHOULD HAVE TAKEN 20 HOURS TOOK US 26 HOURS, DUE TO THE CONDITION OF THE VEHICLE. THE VISOR HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE AND IT IS STILL NECESSARY TO INSERT A FOLDED NAPKIN/CLOTH BETWEEN THE VISOR AND THE HEADLINER TO KEEP IT STATIONARY. AT THIS TIME THE VEHICLE HAS 1375 MILES ON IT. I FIRST NOTICED THE VISOR MOVEMENT ON THE DRIVE HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP (AFTER PURCHASING IT (NEW)). I'M CONCERNED THE CONSTANT MOVEMENT WILL EVENTUALLY ALLOW THE VISOR TO (UNEXPECTEDLY) DROP DOWN FROM THE UP POSITION OBSTRUCTING THE DRIVER'S VIEW OF THE ROAD IN FRONT OF HIM/HER. I AM WORKING WITH NISSAN TO GET THE PROBLEM CORRECTED. THE PASSENGER SIDE SUN VISOR DOESN'T APPEAR TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM.

  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driver air bag inflators, free of charge. The recall began May 7, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or Infiniti customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

The affected vehicles may have been built with driver or front passenger seat belt assemblies that may not properly latch or that may not unlatch when the release button is pressed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection" and number 209, " Seat Belt Assemblies."
  • Consequence: A seat belt that does not properly latch would not restrain a user, increasing their risk of injury in the event of a crash. A seat belt that does not properly unlatch when the release button is pressed may prevent the occupant from quickly exiting the vehicle in a emergency, such as after a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the both front seat belt buckle assemblies, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on September 14, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Consequence: This condition may allow the vehicle to move with the shifter in the "Park" position, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

    I recently purchased a brand new 2015 Nissan Armada 2 months ago. I owned a 2006 Armada for over 10 years and absolutely loved my truck. But it was getting older and I've never had a vehicle go over 100k before. Since the 2016 model was going to have a totally different look and seemed to be smaller on the inside, I decided to get a new one while I could afford to. Within a few days, there was a terrible smell coming from the A/C. A new car that literally smelled like dirty socks. I did some research and decided to try Lysol and let the fan blow on high to try to dry it out, but it didn't work. I took it back to the dealer who claimed nothing was wrong with the A/C, it's just when the temps reach over 100 degrees, it's hard on the A/C. They put in a freshener that lasted a couple of days, but the smell came back, but wasn't as bad as before, so I figured I'm taking a road trip, hopefully, that will help dry out the system. But here I am 2 months into it and my mom literally gagged when the air came on the other day, the smell was so bad. After talking to my sister-in-law who also owns a 2015 Nissan Rogue, she explained she has been having the same issue, so it sounds like Nissan did a bad job with the A/C unit altogether. Everyone tells me that my new car should not be smelling like this, and of course, I totally agree! I will be contacting the dealer again to see about getting something done. I also am not pleased at all with the interior. I'm not sure what type of material it is, but it's similar to suede and is already showing signs of wear on it. I thought I should invest in seat covers, but the dealer said they don't sell them due to the airbags in the seats. The sales guys said it should be covered in the warranty should they wear badly within 3 years (we'll see how that goes, but I don't plan on keeping it that long). My previous Armadas had the Bose system as well, this one is supposed to, but it never sounds quite as clear, and I miss the 6-disc option I had previously.The steering wheel can be adjusted upwards, but it does not lock in place. This may be disappointing for those who are on the heavier side or over 6 feet tall, in my opinion. Additionally, the dash and the rest of the interior are made of a softer material that looks dull and seems to attract lint, making it look dirty. Overall, I feel that for a newer model, there is room for improvement and they should have left it alone because the so-called improvements are not satisfactory.

    I recently purchased a Nissan Armada with just 700 miles on it. Unfortunately, on my way home, the brake light came on and I had no braking power while I was on the highway. There was a grinding noise and a buzzing sound. Luckily, I made it to a service station and had it checked out. They called me today saying it was fine now but are suggesting I replace the front and rear rotors and pads plus changing the brake fluid that could cost up to $1500. Fortunately, the warranty covers it for now. After further research, they found out it's not a mechanical issue, but rather a computer issue that Nissan needs to address. I called up Nissan Consumer Affairs, and they keep saying the same thing - 'We are looking at this, regional specialist will call you,' etc. Oh, and one more thing - I tested it on the highway at 60 miles with 1500 RPM, and the most I could get was 12 MPG. Good luck with finding those magical numbers of 15 and 19 MPG!

    I'm so grateful to be alive after being involved in a roll over wreck at medium speeds due to a weather related incident back in April. This truck truly saved my life! Despite ending up on its roof, the strength of the cabin structure prevented it from collapsing on itself. Although the sun roof did pop out and glass was everywhere, I was still able to climb out from the wreckage. While the computer may not be the smartest on these older models, it continued to run even after being flipped over. This vehicle is incredibly safe and I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the designers, builders and engineers who made it possible. I completely understand your preference for the pre-2016 model, but I'm happy to hear that you've found the newer models to be reliable and capable as well. It's great to hear that the Anti Roll electronics have come in handy for you, especially when dodging a deer! I can definitely see why you would want more breaking power when towing heavy loads, and it's good to know that the 3rd row seat is actually a full size bench seat.     The 2015 Armada has been driven for 133k miles and still runs great! However, the previous owners had equipped it with Goodyear Ultra Terrain tires, which made it ride like a truck. I replaced them with Continental Cross Contact LX20 tires and now it rides perfectly. I appreciate that it has maintained its reliable 7-speed transmission and strong 5.6 V8 engine.

    We've owned this 2015 Armada since new and we couldn't be happier with our choice. As the last model year of body on frame construction, it's one tough SUV that has proven to be incredibly reliable. While it may not be the most economical option out there, we've had no mechanical repairs or suspension problems to report in the 7 years we've owned it. It's been a breeze to travel from Chicago to Florida in it. We're confident that this purchase will last us for many more years to come. 🛻
