buick logo

The Buick Envision is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by General Motors and marketed under the Buick brand since 2014. It is exclusively manufactured in China by the SAIC-GM joint venture, supplying the Chinese and North American markets.

Concept

The Envision was first introduced in 2011 as a design concept. It was a small crossover with two large scissor doors opening upward. The concept was a plug-in hybrid with advanced technology such as a solar roof and head-up display. The waterfall grille made it to the production version of the Envision.

First generation (2014)

The Envision was first introduced in China in August 2014, also known by its Chinese name, “Ang Ke Wei” (昂科威). It went on sale in China on October 20.

The Envision debuted in the U.S. at the North American International Auto Show on January 11, 2016, sharing the segment with a second generation GMC Terrain and the Chevrolet Equinox. It went on sale in the United States in the summer of 2016, making it the first Chinese-built GM vehicle to be sold in America. It was initially offered with all-wheel drive, and subsequently with optional front-wheel drive for model year 2017.

The North American version of the Envision features two powertrains: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 197 hp (147 kW) and 192 lb⋅ft (260 N⋅m) torque, and a turbo-charged 2-liter four-cylinder engine SAE certified at 252 hp (188 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m) torque. Both were initially paired with a third-generation six-speed transmission. For the 2016 model year, the Envision was only available in Premium I and Premium II trim levels, with the 2.0L turbo engine, seven active safety technologies, and OnStar/Intellilink connectivity. The trim levels expanded to five for the 2017 model year.

In addition to the larger engines offered in North America, Chinese buyers also have the option of a turbocharged 1.5-liter unit.

Trim levels for the first generation Envision were known as the 20T and 28T.

Common 2023 Buick Envision problems

Based on consumer reviews, the 2023 Buick Envision has several common problems. One of the most significant issues reported is related to the transmission, with some owners experiencing jerky shifts and issues with the transmission not going into 9th gear unless paddle-shifted. This can negatively impact the driving experience and may require frequent visits to the dealership for repairs.

Another issue reported by owners is the lack of lumbar adjustment in the seats, which can lead to discomfort during long drives. This is a concerning issue, as proper seat adjustment is essential for maintaining good posture and preventing back pain.

The sound quality of the radio has also been criticized by some owners, who have described it as "tinny". This can detract from the overall driving experience, especially during long trips.

In addition, some owners have reported issues with the doors, specifically the bottom of the doors being open to all elements of the weather. This can lead to slush, snow, sand, and gravel accumulating in the door wells, which can be messy and inconvenient.

Another issue reported by owners is the difficulty in balancing the 20" rims that come with the car, as well as issues with the Continental tires being road force bad on half of them. This can lead to a rougher ride and may require frequent tire replacements.

Finally, some owners have reported that the car is not as American-made as they had expected, with 91% of the vehicle being made in China. This can be a disappointment for those who prefer to buy American-made products.

Overall, the 2023 Buick Envision has several common problems that can impact the driving experience and require frequent repairs. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and weigh them against the car's positive features before making a purchase decision.

BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-26
  • VIN: LRBFZSR40PD
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: RE: N222375790-06. Due to the industry-wide semiconductor shortage, the park assist feature is not functional on this car. I was informed of this at the time of sale and told that when parts were available I would be contacted for a "no additional cost retrofit". SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-22
  • VIN: LRBFZPR48PD
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: 2023 Buick Envision. Brakes failed. This was a new car driven 1k miles. There was no warning notification, no alert and no dashboard lights prior to this incident. Of course I had expected the normal brake resistance when I stepped on the pedal. Instead, my foot sunk closer to the floor. I pressed the pedal as hard as I could a few times until it slowed to a stop. I do not drive fast so this was to my advantage. I was later told that the Allstate Milewise device that I had been using was not recommended but in this case it was not a factor. The service manager shared documentation that there was potential system conflicts with this. This was not disclosed to me with my 2020 Envision. Therefore, I continued to use it in the 2023 vehicle. I forwarded the information to Allstate, so they could investigate further. I received call back saying to return the device and find alternative insurance options. When I was told to pick up my car, I asked what was found to cause the brake failure and to highlight the fix in the receipt. A reset of the software was the final fix: LOOKS LIKE ALL MODULES ON CAN BUS 2 LOST BRAKE CONTROL MODULE TESTED CHARGING SYSTEM WITH THE DCBS AND PASSED PERFORMED GLOBAL RESET SCANNED ALL MODULES DID FIND UPDATE FOR THE SERIAL DATA GATEWAY UPDATE MODULE 45YY212842554” I was told that until this happens again that is all they can do.

Both the dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the issue and confirmed that the sensor was still unavailable. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50.

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-17
  • VIN: LRBFZNR41PD
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: I had the brake fail twice in the past 2 months while driving the vehicle and was not able to stop it. I kept pushing on the break pedal but vehicle wouldn't slow down. I was only able to stop the vehicle by shifting the gear to neutral and letting the car come to stop on its own. While driving along, multiple signs such as malfunction indicator light, brake light, ABS light, traction control, electronic stability control, Forward collision system failure etc lit up on the dashboard and I could no longer slow the vehicle down using the brake pedal. The image of the dashboard with all the lit up signs is attached for your reference. Once the vehicle came to stop, I turned it off and waited to catch my breath. When I turned the vehicle back on, most lights were off but malfunction indicator light was stayed on. However, brake started working. I narrowly avoided hitting a car in front of me on the highway because I couldn't slow down the vehicle. I would have hit the vehicle in front of me if it had slowed down. It put my life along with of those around me on the freeway in danger and it could have turned out a lot worse. I am taking the vehicle to the dealership tomorrow morning. Prior to the brake fail, there were no warning lights, messages, or other symptoms of the problem. The warning lights only came on while I was driving and the brake was no longer working.

Negative 2023 Buick Envision car reviews

  1. Sofia Cummings 2024-07-18

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the car. I completely understand where you're coming from regarding the features and price. It can be frustrating when you feel like you're not getting the most bang for your buck, especially when it comes to the preferred trim. Hopefully, the manufacturer will take this feedback into consideration for future models. Thanks again for sharing!

  2. Ron Reinger 2024-05-19

The car was initially a great convenience, but unfortunately, it started having multiple issues. During the second week, I began experiencing brake problems, which were very loud. I took it in for repairs, but within a week, the issue resurfaced. It turned out to be a manufacturer issue. I also had trouble with the lift not opening, and sometimes the car wouldn't move even after putting it in drive. However, after putting it back in park and then back into drive, it would grab. Recently, my check transmission light came on, and unfortunately, the parts needed for repairs are on backorder, which is quite frustrating. This may be a common issue with this car if parts are not readily available. I am currently without a car and still making payments, which is disappointing.

  3. Julien Kreiger 2024-03-29

Overall, I think this is a decent vehicle for the price. However, I do think that the engine could be more powerful. Additionally, the interior finish is not as refined as some other vehicles in this class.

Positive 2023 Buick Envision car reviews

  1. Hazel Raynor 2024-09-18

The vehicle is smaller than a Terrian and bigger than an Encore. It has good trunk space and offers 4 modes of driving. The ride is smooth and easy on the body. The front doors open wide, making it easy to get in and out. The dashboard is awesome, with lighting around the front dashboard and on the sides of the front seat doors. It also has a light in the rear to slide your foot under when opening the trunk. The back camera is great for easy use of seeing back vision from the driver's perspective. However, the cruise control does not have the slow down feature behind other cars, which is a feature that I miss.

  2. Jackson Torp 2024-07-03

After eyeing the Buick Envision ST for over 6 months, I finally bought one. It rides great in town and on the highway. I absolutely love the black leather seats with the red stitching, but my favorite feature has to be the gigantic moonroof. I test drove so many different vehicles, but this one really caught my eye style wise. It's a very nice looking car!

  3. Wilton Lind 2024-06-28

Gorgeous blue with cream interior. The Buick is as quiet as a bank vault, and it has nice power and handling. Although the Avenir trim lacks lumbar adjustment, the A/C and sound system are great. However, the back of the seat does not fit my long torso as the back turns towards the dash too low, which sticks in my back.

  4. Berry McLaughlin 2024-06-07

Traded my 2021 this spring and got an excellent trade-in value. I must say, Buick definitely holds its value. I recently bought a 2023 Cinnabar Metallic Envision Avenir and I absolutely love the color. The comfort is great too. I have learned that manually shifting into 9th gear improves my mileage to an average of 8.4L/100 km, which is way higher than what the brochure lists. The SUV handles great and is eye-catching with all the luxury a person could want.

  5. William Balistreri 2024-05-27

The Envision is a fantastic value and a really enjoyable ride.
