2006 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution problems

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, popularly referred to as the 'Evo', is a sports sedan and rally car based on the Lancer that was manufactured by Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors from 1992 until 2016. There have been ten official versions to date, and the designation of each model is most commonly a Roman numeral. All generations use two-litre intercooled turbo inline four-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive systems.

The Lancer was originally intended only for Japanese markets, but demand on the "grey import" market led the Evolution series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the United Kingdom and in various European markets from around 1998. Mitsubishi decided to export the eighth generation Evolution to the United States in 2003 after witnessing the success Subaru had in that market the previous year with the Subaru Impreza WRX.

All domestic-market versions, until the release of the Evolution IX in 2005, were limited by a gentlemen's agreement between Japanese car manufacturers to advertise no more than 280 PS (206 kW; 276 hp). However, sources say Mitsubishi had already been producing cars with more power but had been underrating the official power outputs in order to comply with the agreement. Therefore, each subsequent version has unofficially evolved above the advertised power figures, with the Japanese-market Evolution IX reaching an alleged output of around 321 PS (236 kW; 317 hp). Various special versions available in other markets, particularly the UK, have official power outputs up to 446 PS (328 kW; 440 hp).

The tenth and final generation of the Lancer Evolution, the Evolution X, was launched in Japan in 2007, and overseas markets in 2008. The Evolution X was produced for almost 10 years until Mitsubishi retired the Lancer Evolution in April 2016.

Common 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution problems

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, particularly the 2006 model, has garnered a reputation for reliability among its owners, despite some common issues that arise over time. These problems are generally not severe and can be managed with regular maintenance and care.

  • Gearbox Whining Noise: A whining noise from the gearbox, which gets louder as you increase speed, is a common symptom of the gearbox output shaft bearings failing. Replacement output shaft bearings are required to stop the noise.
  • Fishy Smell from Climate Control: If you get a fishy smell when turning on the climate control, the evaporator drain hole is likely blocked. Unblocking the evaporator drain hole will stop the bad smell.
  • Faulty Idle Control Valve: The idle control valve can fail, causing the car to idle at a higher RPM than usual. Removing and cleaning the valve may fix the problem, but if not, replacement is necessary.
  • Actuator Failure: If the car experiences sudden jolts or boosts after a slight power loss at high revs, the actuator is likely the cause. Replacing the actuator will resolve the issue.
  • Piston Ring Issues: The piston rings in the Lancer Evolution are prone to breaking prematurely, especially with modifications. Regular maintenance and avoiding excessive modifications can help prevent this issue.
  • Clutch Replacement: The stock clutch may not last beyond 30,000 miles, especially with modifications. Upgrading to a stronger, organic clutch is recommended.
  • Engine and Transmission Maintenance: As the car ages, the engine and transmission may require more attention and maintenance. The cost of significant repairs may outweigh the value of the vehicle at this point in its life.
  • Rattles and Minor Quirks: Some owners have reported minor rattles and quirks, such as rattling seatbelt harnesses and snapping plastic noises from the dashboard.

In summary, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 2006 is generally a reliable vehicle, but like any car, it has its share of common problems. Regular maintenance, careful driving, and avoiding excessive modifications can help prevent or mitigate these issues.

Are 2006 Mitsubishi Lancers reliable?

2006 Mitsubishi Lancer ES CH

Great car, very reliable and economical. Great value for money also. Dependable and trustworthy car that won't cost a heap to buy and operate. Not large enough for a family of three as car seats and prams take up most of any additional space.

How reliable are Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions?

Despite what you may have heard, the Evo X has a stellar reputation for reliability. The stock aluminum 4B11T engine can easily handle 400-plus horsepower with a larger-than-stock turbo and decent tune. Non-modified cars will soldier on well past 100,000 miles with only minimal maintenance–and lots of new tires.

What is the problem with the Evo 9 engine?

Mitsubishi Evo IX engine

One possible problem is noisy hydraulic tappets which can take a while to quieten down if the engine hasn't been run for a few days. Lack of frequent oil changes is the usual reason, causing blockages in the oilways and air to stay trapped in the tappets.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-10-14
  • VIN: JA3AH86C36U
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: REAR SUBFRAME WHERE THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL AND SUSPENSION BOLTS ONTO IS RUSTED, JUST LIKE THE FRONT SUBFRAME . MANY OWNERS 2003-2006 MITSUBISHI LANCER EVOLUTION OWNERS ARE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE. MITSUBISHI RECENTLY ISSUED A RECALL ON THE FRONT SUBFRAME DUE TO RUST. THE REAR SUBFRAME IS ALSO A CONCERN AND IS WORST THAN THE FRONT.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-03-25
  • VIN: JA3AH86CX6U
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THE REAR SUBFRAME OF MY VEHICLE EXHIBITS SIGNIFICANT CORROSION PERFORATION WHERE THE REAR AXLE AND SUSPENSION MOUNTS TO THE BODY. THE RUST IS SO BAD, THAT I'M WORRIED IF I HIT A POTHOLE THE ENTIRE REAR SUBFRAME ASSEMBLY / CONTROL ARMS COULD DETACH, RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN INCREDIBLY WELL MAINTAINED, HAS ALWAYS BEEN WASHED THROUGHOUT THE WINTER MONTHS (UNDERCARRIAGE), AND THE BODY DOES NOT SHOW ANY RUST. I HAVE NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN ANY LOSS OF CONTROL, ETC ... JUST CONCERNED THIS COULD HAPPEN. MY VEHICLE HAD THE FRONT SUBFRAME REPLACED LAST YEAR (RECALL) DUE TO RUST PERFORATION AND LACK OF CORROSION PROTECTION FROM THE FACTORY AND THE POTENTIAL FOR THE FRONT CONTROL ARMS TO DETACH RESULTING IN AN UNSAFE CONDITION. I SEE THE SAME POTENTIAL FOR THE REAR. ALSO PLEASE NOTE, THE PHOTOS I'M ATTACHING ARE NOT FROM MY VEHICLE, BUT THEY ARE NEARLY IDENTICAL TO THE AREAS OF CONCERN ON MY VEHICLE (AND ARE FROM THE EXACT MAKE / MODEL VEHICLE). I'D BE HAPPY TO ATTACH SIMILAR PHOTOS FROM MY VEHICLE IF NEEDED, BUT AGAIN, THEY SHOW THE SAME AMOUNT OF RUST IN THE EXACT SAME AREAS.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-09-30
  • VIN: JA3AH86C16U
  • Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: MY ACTIVE CENTRAL DIFFERENTIAL PUMP FAILED. ABOUT 4 MONTHS AGO ALL OF THE FLUID WAS GONE SO I REFILLED IT. LAST WEEK IT WAS EMPTY AGAIN SO I FILLED IT AND THE FLUID JUST DUMPED OUT ON MY DRIVEWAY. THE CAR ONLY HAS 82000 MILES ON IT.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-10-14
  • VIN: JA3AH86C16U
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I HAVE A RECALL ON MY 2006 MITSUBISHI FOR CORROSION ON SUBFRAME, I CALLED MY LOCAL DEALER, THEY CHECKED THE CAR AND ORDERED THE CROSS MEMBER, SO WE MADE AN APPOINT TO TAKE CAR INTO DEALER FOR REPLACEMENT, LEFT THE CAR WITH THE DEALER FOR THE DAY, LATER THAT DAY I GOTTEN A CALL STATING THEY CANNOT GET THE BOLTS LOOSE DUE TO CORROSION AND I HAVE TO PAY TO REMOVE IT, I FIND IT STRANGE THAT THERES A RECALL ON A PART DUE TO CORROSION AND NOW THE BOLT IS SEIZED DUE TO THE SAME CORROSION, AND I HAVE TO PAY 392.00 TO REMOVE CROSS MEMBER BOLT SO THEY CAN CHANGE A PART THAT THEY RECALLED, I TAUGHT THAT A BIG COMPANY LIKE THIS WOULD RECALL A PART AND THEN TAKE CARE OF THE ISSUE, AND NOT CHARGE THE CUSTOMER FOR THE REPAIR. THIS IS THE WORST RECALL I EVER HEARD OF.

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-12-17
  • VIN: JA3AH86CX6U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I WAS HEADING TO A CLASS WHEN I NOTICED MY CLUTCH PEDAL WENT ALMOST ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. THE CLUTCH WAS STILL DISENGAGING/ENGAGING WHEN I SHIFTED SO I MADE IT TO MY DESTINATION. I WAS WORRIED ABOUT DRIVING IT BUT I DECIDED TO TRY AND SEE IF IT WAS STILL DOING IT, SO I TRIED TO BACK OUT OF A SPOT BUT IT WOULD NO LONGER GO INTO GEAR AND THE CLUTCH PEDAL WAS ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. TURNED OUT MY BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER WAS FAULTY AND I LEARNED THROUGH ONLINE FORUMS AND FRIENDS THAT IT WAS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THE LANCER EVOLUTION. I WAS SURPRISED AT THAT AND WONDERED WHY MITSUBISHI WOULD NOT ISSUE A RECALL FOR FAULTY BRAKE MASTER CYLINDERS. IT DAWNED ON ME THAT MOST PEOPLE WITH THIS TYPE OF CAR ARE THE "DO IT YOURSELF" KIND OF PERSON AND MORE THAN LIKELY WERE FIXED BY THE OWNERS OF THE CARS, THEREFOR NEVER REPORTED THROUGH MECHANICS OR DEALERSHIPS. AFTER THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS REPLACED, THE THROW OUT BEARING RETAINING CLIP CAME LOOSE AND DAMAGED THE PRESSURE PLATE. SO NOW IT IS BEING REPLACED, AND I BELIEVE IT WAS ALL CAUSED BY THE MASTER CYLINDER. HAD IT WORKED PROPERLY, I NEVER WOULD HAVE HAD THESE PROBLEMS AND SPENDING ALL THIS MONEY. WHAT I AM HOPING IS THAT MORE OWNERS COME FORWARD WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND REPORT THEM, AND THAT IT DOESN'T HAPPEN TO SOMEONE WHILE THEY'RE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY OR STUCK IN TRAFFIC. THEY COULD POTENTIALLY LOSE HYDRAULIC POWER TO THE CLUTCH SYSTEM AND BRAKES, RESULTING IN A HAZARDOUS SITUATION THAT COULD DAMAGE TO PROPERTY OR CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-07-01
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: THERE IS AN ACTIVE CENTER DIFFERENTIAL PUMP FAILURE THAT IS BECOMING COMMON IN ALL LANCER EVOLUTIONS OF THIS YEAR. MINE WENT OUT LAST YEAR AND I HAVE BEEN HAVING TO DRIVE WITH IT FOR A YEAR NOW NOT KNOWING WHETHER THE DIFFERENTIAL IS CORRODING AT AN ACCELERATED RATE OF NOT. I DID THIS BECAUSE AFTER I HAD MY VEHICLE ASSESSED THEY TOLD IT WOULD BE $2500 TO REPLACE. I RESEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AND CAN BE DANGEROUS THEREFORE CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO PAY THIS ABSURD AMOUNT EVEN WITH KNOWING THAT ALMOST 60% OF EVO DRIVERS HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS SAME ISSUE. *TR

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-08-12
  • VIN: JA3AH86C96U

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-04-10
  • VIN: JA3AH86C16U
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: THIS IS A VERY WELL DOCUMENTED AND KNOWN ISSUE AMONGST EVOLUTION GEN 9 OWNERS. THE OEM TIMING BELT BRACKET TENSIONER WAS MADE INCORRECT AND CAUSES THE TIMING BELT TO RUB AGAINST METAL. THERE HAS ALREADY BEEN A REPLACEMENT BRACKET MADE THAT CORRECTS THE ISSUE BUT I THINK THIS NEEDS TO BE A RECALL. MITSUBISHI NEEDS TO OWN THIS ONE AND MAKE IT RIGHT, IT'S A FAULTY PART, INITIATE THE RECALL. *TR

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-01-27
  • VIN: JA3AH86C06U
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: MY ACD HYDRAULIC PUMP HAS FAILED. RPM'S SURGE WHEN ACCELERATING AND WHEN AT IDLE, I FEEL LIKE IT IS PUTTING MY ENGINE UNDER EXTREME PRESSURE. FROM MY RESEARCH I HAVE SEEN THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE MITSUBISHI LANCE EVOLUTIONS. THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL, AND WHAT THEY ARE CHARGING TO GET A NEW ONE WHICH YOU CAN ONLY GET FROM THE DEALERSHIP IS RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS! *TR

  • VIN: JA3AH86C56U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: COMPLAINT *10261125*-THIS COMPLAINT IS 100% ACCURATE, MITSUBISHI HAS RECALLED MANY OUTLANDER SUVS ON THIS SAME ISSUE, PLEASE INVESTIGATE, HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE, TURN SIGNALS, HIGH BEAM, LOW BEAM, HORN, FOG LIGHTS, ENGINE, EVERYTHING WORKS AT RANDOM AND CANNOT BE STOPPED, MY ENGINE WILL NOT START, THIS IS A BIG SAFETY CONCERN AND A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT CAN HAVE DEVASTATING RESULTS, "COMPLAINT NUMBER: 10261125 2006 THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH MITSUBISHI LANCER EVOLUTIONS MADE FROM 2003-2006. I HAVE HAD 2 OF THESE CARS AND SAME PROBLEM... ALMOST STARTED A FIRE IN MY CAR.. . WHERE THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS GOES THROUGH THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT FENDER, THERE'S A RUBBER GROMMET THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BLOCK WATER. WELL IN MY 2 CARS AND ABOUT 100 OTHERS ON THE AUTO FORUM I FREQUENT,(WWW.EVOLUTIONM.NET) THE RUBBER GROMMET FAILS TO DO ITS JOB OF BLOCKING WEATHER AND WATER IS LEAKING THROUGH GOING DOWN THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS AND INTO THE WIRING CONNECTORS. FROM THERE THE AVERAGE OWNER LIKE ME IS GETTING THERE HORN, LIGHTS WIPERS SRS LIGHT ETC. TURNING ON/OFF RAPIDLY WHILE DRIVING. SOME HAVE EXPERIENCED THE CAR SUDDENLY SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING, WELL ALONG WITH THAT YOU LOOSE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. PLEASE DO WHAT EVER NEEDS TO BE DONE TO MAKE THIS A RECALL. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-08-15
  • VIN: JA3AH86C36U
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: MY 2006 MITSUBISHI EVOLUTION 9 STARTED TO MAKE ABNORMAL ENGINE NOISES AUDIBLE WITHIN THE CAB. THE CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED REGULARLY AND IS MORE THAN WELL KEPT... THE NOISE COMES FROM WITHIN THE TIMING BELT COVER AND SOUNDS MUCH LIKE A WASHING MACHINE. THIS NOISE IS ALSO WELL DOCUMENTED AMONG EVO 9 OWNERS. HERE IS A LINK TO THE THREAD. HTTP://FORUMS.EVOLUTIONM.NET/EVO-ENGINE-TURBO-DRIVETRAIN/262773-IX-ENGINE-IDLE-NOISE-BELT-VIDEO.HTML IT APPEARS THAT THE TIMING WHEEL RUBS ON THE TIMING BELT AND CAUSES THIS NOISE. THE CURRENT FIX IS TO REPLACE YOUR TIMING BELT, CRANKSHAFT BLADE(TIMING WHEEL), AND TIMING BELT TENSIONER REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE OR TIMING BELT SERVICE INTERVALS AT THE EXPENSE OF THE OWNER. IF THE TIMING BELT WERE TO FAIL FROM HEAT GENERATED DUE TO FRICTION (RUBBING) THE ENGINE WOULD BE DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR (INTERFERENCE ENGINE) NOT TO MENTION THE VEHICLE WOULD BE STRANDED... AND THE FAILURE MODE HAS A VERY HIGH CHANGE OF CAUSING THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. A SIMPLE FMEA WOULD SHOW THIS TO BE A GLARING ISSUE. TO SPEAK TO HOW OFTEN THIS OCCURS...THE SOUND IS PRESENT ANY TIME THE ENGINE IS IDLING, HOWEVER BELT FAILURE FROM THIS ISSUE COULD HAPPEN AT ANY SPEED DURING ANY DRIVING CONDITIONS/MANEUVERS. THE LOCAL MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP IS ANYTHING BUT HELPFUL, AND MITSUBISHI HAS NOT BEEN FORTHCOMING WITH SOLUTIONS OR FIXES. *TR

POWER TRAIN,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-02-10
  • VIN: JA3AH86C86U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I FIRST NOTICED THAT MY 2006 MITSUBISHI LANCER EVOLUTION MR STARTED TO MAKE A GRINDING/SCRAPPING NOISE THAT SEEMED TO BE GENERATING FROM THE TIMING BELT AREA. THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 30,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. IT SEEMED TO BE A NOISE THAT WAS PRESENT AT IDLE AND UPON COLD START UPS. I STARTED TO RESEARCH THIS ON VARIOUS FORUMS AND INTERNET, ONLY TO FIND THAT IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH A CLEAR SOLUTION. THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW DEALERSHIPS WHO HAVE SEEMED TO HAVE RESOLVED THIS ISSUE BUT EACH FIX SEEMED TO VARY WITHIN THE TIMING BELT AREA. THE TIMING BELT, SENSOR BLADE, TENSIONER, TENSIONER PULLEYS, ETC. HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO CAUSE THIS ISSUE. THE DEALERSHIP THAT "FIXED" MY TIMING BELT AREA GRINDING NOISE SUGGESTED THAT I REPLACE THE TIMING BELT ONLY, WHICH I DID. ONLY TO HAVE THE PROBLEM RESURFACE ABOUT 2500 MILES LATER. I AM UNWILLING TO KEEP PUTTING TIMING BELTS IN MY CAR TO TEMPORARILY FIX THE PROBLEM. IT SCARES ME THAT THE DEALER KEEPS TRYING TO GO DOWN THIS SAME ROAD WITH THE SAME CONCLUSION. THIS CAR IS MY DAILY DRIVER AND ABOUT 90% OF THE TIMES MY KIDS ARE IN THIS CAR WITH ME. IT WOULD BE TERRIBLE IF MY ENGINE BRAKES DOWN ON ME WHILE DRIVING AROUND WITH MY KIDS IN THE CAR. THIS CAN BE A DANGEROUS PROBLEM. I URGE MITSUBISHI TO STRONGLY CONSIDER A RECALL FOR THIS. WITH SUCH AN AMAZING CAR I WOULD HOPE MITSUBISHI WOULD STANDBY IT AND DO THE RIGHT THING! *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-08-26
  • VIN: JA3AH86C16U
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: IN AUGUST I NOTICED A WEIRD NOISE COMING FROM THE TIMING BELT AREA OF MY CAR. THE CAR WAS PERFECTLY FINE AND DRIVEN NORMALLY. I STARTED THE CAR AND THE NOISE APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE. THE NOISE SOUNDS LIKE A WASHING MACHINE AND IS ONLY PRESENT WHEN THE CAR IS STARTED UP AND IS COLD. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES OF DRIVING, THE NOISE DISAPPEARS. I AM WORRIED THAT THERE IS SOMETHING TERRIBLY WRONG IN THAT AREA. I DO NOT WANT MY ENGINE TO BREAK. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-03-01
  • VIN: JA3AH86C36U
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE TIMING BELT AREA. SOUNDS LIKE A FAULTY PULLEY OR THE BELT RUBBING ON SOMETHING. TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE TIMING BELT IDLER PULLEY. BEFORE I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP I TOLD THEM I STILL HEAR THE SAME SOUND JUST QUIETER. THEY TOLD ME IF IT GETS LOUDER TO COME BACK. THAT WAS ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND IT HAS GOTTEN LOUDER SINCE. MY CONCERN IS CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. NOBODY HAS BEEN ABLE TO PROPERLY DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE. THIS COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF SEVERE ENGINE FAILURE OCCURRED AT SPEED. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-11-20
  • VIN: JA3AH86C66U
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: A COUPLE MONTHS AGO, I NOTICED A SQUEAKING SOUND COMING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE OF MY ENGINE WHEN MY CAR WAS IDLING. AFTER THE CAR WARMED UP (5-10 MIN), THE SOUND WOULD GO AWAY. THE SOUND APPEARED TO BE BELT RELATED SO I CHECKED THE SERPENTINE (ACCESSORY) BELT AND NOTICED SIGNS OF WEAR AND TEAR ON THE BELT AND THE IDLER PULLEY . I CHANGED THE BELT OUT (WAS CLOSE TO RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT DATE ANYWAY) BUT THE SOUND IS STILL THERE. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THIS PROBLEM IS QUITE COMMON WITH 2006 EVOLUTION OWNERS AND THERE IS NO DEFINITE FIX FROM THE DEALER. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY THE MANUFACTURER BECAUSE THE WEAR AND TEAR CREATED BY THE BELT/PULLEY (OR WHATEVER THE CULPRIT MAY BE) COULD EASILY LEAD TO A FAILURE IN ONE OF THE ACCESSORY SYSTEMS (ALTERNATOR, WATER PUMP, POWER STEERING) AND COULD BE DANGEROUS TO MY CAR OR EVEN WORSE TO ME. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-02-01
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: BAD BEARING NOISE COMING FROM TIMING BELT AREA. THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE TIMING BELT IDLER PULLEY. I HAVE HAD IT REPLACED BY THE DEALER AND THE EXACT SAME NOISE CAME BACK WITHIN 10K MILES. THIS NOISE APPEARED WITH 31K MILES ON THE CAR. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-11-06
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: CAR NEEDS TO BE SITTING AT AN IDLE SPEED, AND FIRST STARTED BECOMING AUDIBLE A FEW MONTHS AGO, BUT WAS INTERMITTENT. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALER AND THEY DID NOT HAVE A FIX AND BLAMED IT ON THE VALVES NEEDING ADJUSTMENT AND MY SERPENTINE BELT. THE VALVES ON THIS PARTICULAR CAR ARE HYDRAULIC AND DO NOT NEED SERVICING AND WHEN I REMOVED MY OWN SERPENTINE BELT, THE NOISE WAS STILL AUDIBLE! IT IS DEFINITELY COMING FROM THE TIMING BELT AREA AND SOUNDS LIKE IT IS ALMOST HITTING OR SCRAPING SOMETHING! ITS A SERIOUS CONCERN AS I DON'T NEED A TIMING BELT FAILURE WHILE DRIVING OUT ON THE ROAD, DUE TO A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT IN ONE/SOME OF THE TIMING BELT COMPONENTS!! THE SCRAPING NOISE AT IDLE IS ALMOST DAILY WHEN HOT OR COLD, IT DOESN'T MATTER ANYMORE. I'VE ALSO TAKEN IT TO ANOTHER DEALER RECENTLY AND THEY SAID THEY WERE AWARE OF THE ISSUE, BUT THERE IS NO FIX AND ITS QUITE COMMON FOR MY VEHICLE! *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-09-01
  • VIN: JA3AH86C86U
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I 1ST STARTED HEARING A METAL SCRAPING NOISE COMING FROM THE DRIVE BELT AREA AROUND 20,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER OF MY 2006 MITSUBISHI LANCER EVOLUTION IX MR. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ONLINE, I FOUND THIS TO BE A COMMON/FREQUENT PROBLEM REPORTED BY MANY OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME CAR THROUGHOUT THE WEB. IN FACT, I EVEN FOUND A YOUTUBE CLIP OF THE EXACT SAME NOISE CREATED FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. THE NOISE HAS BEEN DETERMINED TO BE INVOLVING THE TIMING BELT RUBBING AGAINST THE CRANKSHAFT BLADE. I'VE ONLY FOUND IT TO ONLY BE AUDIBLE AT IDLE, SO IT MAKES SENSE THAT IT'S SOME SORT OF TIMING BELT TENSION ISSUE. SOME DEALERSHIPS ARE RESOLVING THIS ISSUE BY REPLACING THE TIMING BELT, CRANKSHAFT BLADE, TIMING BELT TENSIONER, AND SOMETIMES EVEN THE IDLER PULLEY. MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP DENIED MY WARRANTY REPAIR CLAIM TO GET THE METAL SCRAPING NOISE ISSUE FIXED, AND CHARGED ME $140 TO SPRAY ENGINE DEGREASER ON UNDRESSED ACCESSORY BELTS, CLAIMING THAT THE ACCESSORY BELTS WERE OVERDRESSED AND THAT IS WHAT CAUSED THE NOISE. UNFORTUNATELY, MY CAR IS STILL MAKING THE SAME NOISE, WHICH I AM CERTAIN IS BEING CAUSED BY THE SAME TIMING BELT/CRANKSHAFT BLADE ISSUE. MY ONLY CONCERN IS THAT THE TIMING BELT WILL AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE FAIL DUE TO THE OBVIOUS RUBBING/CONTACT THAT IS OCCURRING WITH THE CRANKSHAFT BLADE, SO I WOULD LIKE TO GET THIS FIXED BEFORE THAT HAPPENS. GLENDALE MITSUBISHI IN GLENDALE, CA IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, AND ACKNOWLEDGED THAT IT'S A COMMON ISSUE, BUT WAS NOT WILLING TO DISCUSS IT WITH MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP, STATING THAT MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP SHOULD CONTACT THE MITSUBISHI TECH LINE INSTEAD. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2006 LANCER EVOLUTIONS, AND FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT MITSUBISHI SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ISSUING A SERVICE BULLETIN TO GET THIS RESOLVED. *TR

THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 18,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. IT SEEMED TO BE A NOISE THAT WAS PRESENT AT IDLE AND UPON COLD START UPS. I STARTED TO RESEARCH THIS ON VARIOUS FORUMS AND INTERNET, ONLY TO FIND THAT IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH A CLEAR SOLUTION. NO PART HAVE BEEN REPLACED AS OF YET. 4. IN SHORT IT SEEMS ALMOST ALL EVO IX'S ARE AFFECTED BY THIS BELT WEAR ON THE IDLER PULLEY, POWER STEERING PULLEY, AND POSSIBLY OTHERS. I JUST DON'T WANT TO SEE ONE OF THESE BELTS BREAK ON THIS PERFORMANCE TURBO CAR AT HIGH SPEEDS... COULD CAUSE MANY INJURIES IN MY OPINION. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2002-2007 Lancer, 2004 Lancer Wagon, 2003-2006 Lancer Evolution, 2003-2006 Outlander and 2007-2013 Outlander V-6 vehicles originally sold in, or ever registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may detach due to the front cross member corroding from salt water exposure such as from road salt use.
  • Consequence: A detached front control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front cross members. Depending on the level of existing corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one that has a sealing/anti-corrosion agent applied to it. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began January 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-003.

  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 19, 2016. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-002.

Negative 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution car reviews

What a fantastic car to drive! While the interior may not be the best, I found the EVO MR to be worth the high price tag. It's not a car for those seeking speed and comfort, but rather a big, tough, raw bully car with one purpose in life: to dominate all that stand up to it. If making cars that cost 2-3 times as much shake in their boots at a red light brings a smile to your face, then this is the car for you. Buy it now!

Positive 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution car reviews

  1. Murray Veum 2025-01-08

I've owned three Evo's now. The IX MR is the top of the line for the Evolution's, and it's even better than the new 2008's according to a few companies. This model in 06 was the last year for this body style, and for the MR Edition, it was the last year for the manual 6-speed. Every Evo I've owned has never had a problem other than normal brake changes and clutch replacement at around 45-60k miles, but don't forget this is a performance machine. The clutch isn't meant to last forever. The car looks great and drives even better. You won't get any breaks in this car from cops, although... just keep it safe and you'll be okay. Go to the track to unleash the beast!

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX has fantastic handling when driven on the highway. It has excellent pick up and is smooth when you open the throttle. This car does everything you expect it to do.

  3. Adelbert Beier 2024-11-08

Let's get started! First, jump in and turn the key, but don't forget to leave the door open so you can hear that beautiful sound. When you step on the gas, you'll hear the turbo spool up and watch the needles quickly swing to the right. The speedometer goes smoothly all the way to the top. In a canyon, this car is like a race car. The steering is very light and insanely quick, so quick that I misjudged a turn and got some curb rash. But taking those turns at the speed limit is much more than fun, it creates a new love for cars. The Recaro seats are very comfy and hold you in very well while pulling those high G turns. The steering wheel fits right into your hands and the pedals are placed perfectly. This car is a $30,000 Porsche killer!

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is a blast to drive and I wouldn't trade it for anything!

  5. Brant Pagac 2024-10-18

Looking for a car with a 2.0 Liter engine that delivers an impressive 286 horsepower and 289 pounds of torque? Look no further than the Evo IX! This car is not only fast, but it's also practical for everyday use. The only other car in its class that can compete is the Subaru WRX STi. If you're a driving enthusiast like me, you'll find this car to be an absolute blast to drive. Plus, its AWD system provides excellent traction on any road surface, whether it's dry, wet, or even icy. With the ACD button, you can easily switch between different levels of traction to suit your driving needs. However, it's important to note that this car may not be for everyone, as it takes a lot of self-control not to exceed the speed limit. If you're someone who struggles with that, you may want to consider the STi instead.
