2011 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution problems
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, popularly referred to as the 'Evo', is a sports sedan and rally car based on the Lancer that was manufactured by Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors from 1992 until 2016. There have been ten official versions to date, and the designation of each model is most commonly a Roman numeral. All generations use two-litre intercooled turbo inline four-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive systems.
The Lancer was originally intended only for Japanese markets, but demand on the "grey import" market led the Evolution series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the United Kingdom and in various European markets from around 1998. Mitsubishi decided to export the eighth generation Evolution to the United States in 2003 after witnessing the success Subaru had in that market the previous year with the Subaru Impreza WRX.
All domestic-market versions, until the release of the Evolution IX in 2005, were limited by a gentlemen's agreement between Japanese car manufacturers to advertise no more than 280 PS (206 kW; 276 hp). However, sources say Mitsubishi had already been producing cars with more power but had been underrating the official power outputs in order to comply with the agreement. Therefore, each subsequent version has unofficially evolved above the advertised power figures, with the Japanese-market Evolution IX reaching an alleged output of around 321 PS (236 kW; 317 hp). Various special versions available in other markets, particularly the UK, have official power outputs up to 446 PS (328 kW; 440 hp).
The tenth and final generation of the Lancer Evolution, the Evolution X, was launched in Japan in 2007, and overseas markets in 2008. The Evolution X was produced for almost 10 years until Mitsubishi retired the Lancer Evolution in April 2016.

Common 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution problems
The 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is known for some common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the issues and their details:
- Timing Chain Issue: The timing chain can stretch over time, causing the engine to throw a specific code (P0012) and leading to a decrease in power and efficiency . This issue is common in pre-2011 models and can be fixed by replacing the timing chain with an upgraded one .
- Fuel Pump Failure: The fuel pump can fail over time, especially in early evo x models. An upgraded blue fuel pump (86278024) can fix this issue .
- Master Cylinder Failure: The master cylinder in the 5-speed transmission is made up of mainly plastics and can fail completely, making it impossible to actuate the clutch . Upgrading the master cylinder can solve this problem .
- Suspension Knocking Noises: During corners, knocking noises in the front suspension can occur, which can be fixed by lubricating the front suspension struts or replacing the Bilstein dampers if they have reached their limits .
- Input Shaft Bearing Noise: A whining noise that increases as you drive and gets the loudest at around 40 miles per hour is most likely due to the input shaft bearing .
- Power Window Safety System: Mitsubishi has updated the brake assist system and improved the power window safety system for all 2011 models.
- Body & Paint Issues: The 2011 model faced 53 major complaints, 3 major recalls, and 167 TSBs, with the Body & Paint category being the most common complaint.
In general, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is considered a reliable car, but like any vehicle, it can have issues, especially in its earlier models. Regular maintenance and sensible driving can help extend the life of the car and avoid unexpected or catastrophic repairs.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-07
- VIN: Ja32u2fu7bu
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: While driving the vehicle the headlights will turn off at random intervals. The passenger side rear tail light is out and remains out despite changing the bulb. Water leaks through a gap in the body into the light and the trunk. Headlights need to be reliable in order to ensure safety and visibility, especially at night and during inclement weather. My father is a retired auto mechanic and has been doing his best to troubleshoot the problem. I am experiencing financial hardship at the moment and I cannot afford to bring my vehicle anywhere that would charge. There are no warnings, the lights just stop working periodically and the tail light stopped working about a week ago.
STEERING,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-14
- VIN: JA32U2FU3BU
- Components: STEERING,STRUCTURE
- Summary: I got a service needed warning for the electric power steering and I lost all power steering... As it turned out, the rack and pinion was bad because the subframe rotted out where the rack and pinion mounts up and a custom built subframe and rack and pinion had to be installed on the car at a cost of almost $5,000...
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-11
- VIN: ja32u2fu6bu
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The contact owns a 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer. The contact stated that while having the vehicle inspected, the front crossmember was corroded. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 72,000. Consumer called the local dealer back for an estimate, part to be replaced and was given $1150.19. Dealer would get the parts in a week.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-07
- VIN: JA32X8HW8BU
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Routine service at 112 Mitsubishi Dealer/Service Center noted that my front crossbar was severely corroded and “coming apart in chunks”. They noted that this defect is known and was recalled on later model years of my car, but not my 2011. Considering it was recalled already and is the same issue, I would recommend and hope the 2011 model year can also be included in the recall. It is available for inspection through mid September when I expect to repair it. There were no warnings leading up to this discovery of the defect, as it is structural. I am not an expert, but I would expect this advanced corrosion could fully compromise the car structure in a catastrophic way, resulting in an accident and/or injury.

SO FAR THE CAR IS WORKING OK WITH THE EXCEPTION THAT THE TRANSMISSION, ENGINE, GAS PEDAL, GEAR-SPEED-CLUTCH STICK, ARE NOT FUNCTIONING AS EXPECTED BY THE STANDARDS APPROVED BY MITSUBISHI AUTOMOTIVE USA. THE CAR CANNOT ACCELERATE PROPERLY AND IT IS CONSUMING TOO MUCH GASOLINE AND ENGINE OIL. THERE WERE SEVERAL RECALLS ABOUT THE CAR AND THEY WERE DONE BUT THE MAIN PROBLEM REGARDING ACCELERATION HAS NOT EVEN BEEN CONSIDERED AS A RECALL YET AS FAR AS I KNOW.

MY MECHANIC CHECKED OUT THE ENGINE ALL COMPUTERS SYSTEMS ARE GOOD AND THE ENGINE RUNS FINE HE IS LINKING IT TO THE TRANSMISSION BEING A CVT AND POSSIBLY A DEFECTIVE OR BAD DESIGN. THIS LONG DELAY HAS RESULTED IN CAUSING AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE I WOULD TRY TO ACCELERATE AND THE CAR WOULD STALL OUT FOR THAT AMOUNT OF TIME THE ENGINE THAT'S NOT THE PROBLEM IT'S THE TRANSMISSION
SEAT BELTS,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-01-28
- VIN: JA32U2FUXBU

- Date Of Incident: 2018-07-16
- VIN: JA32U2FU1BU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: PURCHASED 2011 LANCER IN 2011. IN MARCH 2013 MITSUBISHI ISSUED A TECH SERVICE BULLETIN AND REVISED IT IN JUNE OF 2013. THE ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT COMES ON AND MUST BE TAKEN TO DEALER FOR SERVICE. MITSUBISHI DOES A SIMPLE SOFTWARE UPGRADE TO THE ECM AND RESETS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT IS MITSUBISHI IS SIMPLY LETTING THESE VEHICLES GET TO THIS FAILURE POINT AND VEHICLES CAN GO INTO LIMP MODE (MEANING DRIVE NO FASTER THAN 45MPH) RATHER THAN PROACTIVELY AVOIDING THE PROBLEM. FURTHER, THEY ARE KNOWINGLY ALLOWING VEHICLES TO GET PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD WITHOUT REPAIR THUS FORCING CUSTOMERS TO PAY TO HAVE THIS KNOWN ISSUE RESOLVED. TO ADD TO THE PROBLEM IS MITSUBISHI WILL NOT ALLOW NON-MITSUBISHI SERVICE CENTERS, MECHANICS OR REPAIR SHOPS TO UPDATE THE ECM AND I AM FORCED TO TAKE IT TO AN AUTHORIZED MITSUBISHI DEALER FOR FIXING. BECAUSE THESE VEHICLES HAVE HAD OTHER SAFETY RECALLS AND WARRANTY REPAIR WORK, THEY SHOULD HAVE SIMPLY TAKEN 15 MINUTES TO UPGRADED THE ECM SOFTWARE AND RESET AT THE TIME TO AVOID THIS FROM HAPPENING RATHER THAN LETTING THE WARRANTY EXPIRE AND CHARGING ME TO FIX A KNOWN ISSUE.
WHEELS,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-04-12
- VIN: JA32U1FU1BU
- Components: WHEELS,ENGINE
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 MITSUBISHI LANCER. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED RAPIDLY ON ITS OWN WITHOUT WARNING AND THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN DRIVING. ALL UPPER GEARS ARE DIFFICULT TO SHIFT INTO. THE CLUTCH FAILED TWICE IN LESS THAN 40K MILES THEN THE REPLACEMENT FAILED AFTER ONLY 1,000. NOT SURE IF THEY ARE RELATED.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-12-06
- VIN: JA32W8FVXBU
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: AFTER FILLING UP ON GASOLINE, MY 4 YEAR OLD MENTIONED THAT SHE SMELLED GAS IN THE CAR. I IMMEDIATELY GOT HOME AND PULLED INTO MY GARAGE AND SMELLED IT, TOO. THEN NEXT MORNING, MY GARAGE WAS OVERWHELMED WITH THE FUMES. AFTER HAVING A MECHANIC INSPECT THE CAR, HE FOUND GAS WAS LEAKING FROM THE TOP OF THE TANK, WHERE THE FUEL PUMP GOES. APPARENTLY, IT WAS COMPLETELY CORRODED, WHICH CAUSED THE PLASTIC FUEL PUMP HOUSING ATTACHED TO IT TO CRACK AND SUBSEQUENTLY LEAK FUEL EVERYWHERE. THIS FUEL PUMP HOUSING IS LOCATED DIRECTLY BENEATH MY SON'S CAR SEAT, ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE BACK SEAT. THIS IS A SERIOUS FIRE HAZARD. AFTER REACHING OUT TO OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME VEHICLE, APPARENTLY THIS CORROSION IS VERY COMMON. BUT MY CAR IS NOT EVEN 6 YEARS OLD, WITH ONLY 48K MILES (PURCHASED IT NEW ON 12/27/2011). THIS SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING ON SUCH A RELATIVELY NEW CAR.

THE GEICO ADJUSTER COULDNT BELEIVE THAT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY NOR THE SEATBELT RETRACTED! THE ONLY THING THAT SAVED MY WIFE WAS THE SEATBELT FOR A SEC AND HITTING THE STEERING WHEEL. THE ADJUSTER ALSO HAD SAID THAT THE SENSORS FOR THE AIR BAGS WERE TRIPPED AND IT DID NOT WORK. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE! GEICO IS FILING A SUBROGATION CLAIM AGAINST MITSUBISHI SINCE WE CALLED MISTSUBISHI AND THEY DIDNT WANT TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. MARIAS AT MISTUBISHI JUST SAID TO FILE A CLAIM WITH OUR INSURANCE WITHOUT EVEN SENDING THEIR OWN PEOPLE TO CHECK OUT THE VEHICLE. MARIEAS CAN BE REACHED AT 18886487820 CLAIM NUMBER 1254613189. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO BE SERVICE AND THE PERSON WHO WAS DOING THE SERVICE ON MY CAR TOLD ME THAT THE ACD/AYC PUMP HAS GONE OUT AND I NEED A REPLACEMENT. AFTER DOING RESEARCH, I SEEMS THAT MULTIPLE PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME ISSUE WERE THESE PUMPS GO OUT UNEXPECTED. THERE ARE ONLY 1400-1600 OF THESE CARS MADE YEAR IN THE STATES AND TO SEE MANY PEOPLE HAVE THIS PROBLEM IN THE U.S. AND AROUND THE WORLD MIND BOGGLING TO MANY OF US. Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my new EVO X. I've been driving it for the past two weeks and it has been an absolute blast! I love everything about it - from the sleek looks to the amazing handling and power. It definitely turns heads on the road! Some people may just see a Lancer, but those who truly know cars can appreciate what a great driving experience it provides. I've owned a variety of cars in the past, from BMWs to RX8s, and everything in between. I was considering several other options before choosing the EVO X, including the RX8 R3, 350Z, G37, MB, and BMW. But for the price and the amount of driving fun it provides, I think it's a great value. Plus, it seats five, so I can take my family out for a drive every once in a while. I haven't pushed it too hard yet due to its low mileage (I got it with only 50 miles!), but I can't wait to hit 1,000 miles. The interior is decent, although I'm not a huge fan of the cloth armrest. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend the EVO X to anyone looking for a fun and reliable car. Thanks for reading!
-
This car has not met the expected standards of reliability for its price range. It has been plagued with issues that could potentially result in engine damage.
-
This Lancer is not your typical one. I've owned it for a year and haven't had any issues except for the clutch. Even though I don't drive hard or launch the car, I had to replace the clutch at around 12k. I ended up getting an aftermarket clutch and a new flywheel because of the warp. Other than that, I really enjoy the car and the fun that comes with it. I joined a local car club and ended up modifying the car a bit. The gas mileage isn't great, but with a 2.0 engine pushing out nearly 300hp on a 3k pound car, it's worth it. The interior is just okay if you have the base model, but an EVO is made for driving, not luxury.
-
After 1yr, I'm still very happy with my purchase. It's easily better than the more expensive STi. It did great through the winter and always gets looks. Plus, it continues to be fun to drive!
-
I was a bit worried about buyer's remorse before purchasing this car, but now that I have it, I'm glad I took the risk. Initially, I was planning to get a reasonable car, like an Acura or something, but I thought, you only live once, so I went for the Evo. Since driving it off the lot, I have a perma-smile on my face. Although there are a few things I don't like, such as the driver's seat not being very adjustable, the clunky shifts into 2nd and 3rd until the clutch warms up, the tiny trunk (not big enough for golf clubs w/ sub), and no fold-down seats for snowboarding, the good outweighs the bad. It's sharp when you want it to be and tame on your daily commute. All in all, it's not a bad daily driver, and it's fast.

I upgraded from a 2008 STi to the 2010 EVO X. Although the STi had a more pleasant interior, the seats in the X are amazing. I highly recommend the SSS package, as it is well worth it. However, the overall build quality of the X is not as good as the STi, and there is a lack of space. The buttons feel cheaper and the seating position is not great, despite the amazing seats. Both cars are great options, but if you want something similar to the X, you should consider buying a 2011 STi, as the 08-2010 models don't compare. The paint quality of the X seems to be better than the Subaru, and there is less turbo lag, even though the motor is 0.5L smaller. One of the biggest differences is fuel economy, as the 5-speed is too short and gets 8mpg less than the STi did.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my EVO over the past 6 months. While I've enjoyed driving it, there are a couple of things that have been bothering me. Firstly, I've noticed that the paint is quite thin and scratches easily. To avoid this, I've invested in a clear bra for the front, rocker panels, and trunk deck. It's a bit pricey at around $1000, but it's definitely worth it to protect the car. Secondly, I've found that the windshield is quite thin, which I believe is due to Mitsu's efforts to save weight. Unfortunately, I got a minor chip in mine and the windshield ended up splitting when I tried to repair it. I'm currently in the process of replacing it with a standard Lancer windshield, which is a bit thicker but also heavier. Just something to keep in mind if you're considering an EVO. Let me know if you have any questions!

These cars are good and fun to drive, with great handling, good power, and a top-notch AWD system. While the interior is just okay and the comfort is not great, it's important to remember that this car is not meant to be a cruiser. In my opinion, the premium over the GSR's is not worth it, but if you have the budget, it's definitely a great option. If you're willing to wait, you may be able to snag a better deal in the future. Overall, it's a great car for those who prioritize performance and excitement.

We have owned our 2008 EVO for four months now and were initially very excited about our purchase. However, after waxing the vehicle for the fourth time 1 1/2 weeks ago, my husband noticed a massive amount of paint chips above the rear tires on both sides of the car and also on the hood. After researching online, we found that many other people have experienced the same issue, and unfortunately, Mitsubishi has not been very helpful in resolving the problem for most of them. If you are considering purchasing this vehicle, we would advise against it due to the paint chipping and windshield issues that seem to be common. We have had a disappointing experience with the quality of this car and regret our purchase.

Upon driving the car out of the dealer lot, I was blown away by the sheer power and torque of this beast. While the seats are supportive, adjusting them when reclining can be quite challenging. However, the transmission, while slightly notchy, is still superior to that of a Honda. Although the interior plastic parts are not up to par with my 06 Civic, this is a minor issue compared to the overall performance of the car. As someone who has previously owned a 2003 WRX, I can confidently say that the GSR's transmission is not a significant concern for me.
