Mitsubishi Lancer evolution problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, popularly referred to as the 'Evo', is a sports sedan and rally car based on the Lancer that was manufactured by Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors from 1992 until 2016. There have been ten official versions to date, and the designation of each model is most commonly a Roman numeral. All generations use two-litre intercooled turbo inline four-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive systems.

The Lancer was originally intended only for Japanese markets, but demand on the "grey import" market led the Evolution series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the United Kingdom and in various European markets from around 1998. Mitsubishi decided to export the eighth generation Evolution to the United States in 2003 after witnessing the success Subaru had in that market the previous year with the Subaru Impreza WRX.

All domestic-market versions, until the release of the Evolution IX in 2005, were limited by a gentlemen's agreement between Japanese car manufacturers to advertise no more than 280 PS (206 kW; 276 hp). However, sources say Mitsubishi had already been producing cars with more power but had been underrating the official power outputs in order to comply with the agreement. Therefore, each subsequent version has unofficially evolved above the advertised power figures, with the Japanese-market Evolution IX reaching an alleged output of around 321 PS (236 kW; 317 hp). Various special versions available in other markets, particularly the UK, have official power outputs up to 446 PS (328 kW; 440 hp).

The tenth and final generation of the Lancer Evolution, the Evolution X, was launched in Japan in 2007, and overseas markets in 2008. The Evolution X was produced for almost 10 years until Mitsubishi retired the Lancer Evolution in April 2016.

Common Mitsubishi Lancer evolution problems

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution cars are known for their high-performance capabilities, but like any other car, they have their fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Transmission Issues: The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) used in some Lancer Evolutions is known to have issues, particularly around the 100,000-mile mark. Transmission replacement is a costly repair, but regular transmission fluid flushes can help extend the life of the transmission.
  • Suspension Knocking Noise: A knocking noise coming from the suspension when turning corners can indicate a problem with the front suspension struts. This is not a major issue and can be resolved by lubricating the struts.
  • Whining Noise: A whining noise coming from the gearbox, particularly at speeds over 40mph, can be a symptom of failing gearbox output shaft bearings. Replacing the output shaft bearings can solve this problem.
  • Bad Smell from Climate Control: A fishy smell coming from the climate control can be caused by a blocked evaporator drain hole. Unblocking the evaporator drain hole can resolve this issue.
  • Engine Idling Problems: The idle control valve can fail, causing the engine to idle at a higher RPM than normal. Cleaning or replacing the idle control valve can fix this problem.
  • Actuator Failure: The actuator can fail, causing sudden jolts or boosts after a slight power loss at high revs. Replacing the actuator can solve this problem.
  • Climate Control Issues: Early Lancer Evolutions are known to have issues with the climate control system, including bad smells, lack of power, and lukewarm air. Troubleshooting the AC system, checking for blockages or damage, recharging the AC system, and changing the air filter can help resolve these issues.
  • Sticking and Grinding Gears: The gears in the transmission can stick or grind when shifting, particularly in older models. Regular maintenance and addressing any issues promptly can help prevent this problem.

It is important to note that many of these issues can be prevented or mitigated with regular maintenance and prompt attention to any problems that arise. Additionally, not all Lancer Evolutions will experience these issues, and many owners report high levels of satisfaction with their cars.

Are Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution reliable?

Despite what you may have heard, the Evo X has a stellar reputation for reliability. The stock aluminum 4B11T engine can easily handle 400-plus horsepower with a larger-than-stock turbo and decent tune. Non-modified cars will soldier on well past 100,000 miles with only minimal maintenance–and lots of new tires.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-14
  • Date Complaint: 2023-05-05
  • VIN: JA32W8FV0DU
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The vehicle's right front lower control arm is no longer secured to it's inner rear mounting location at the front crossmember. This condition allows for unintended movement of the right front wheel and was caused by structural failure of the front crossmember at the control arm to chassis attachment point due to corrosion exactly as described in SR-20-003REV_2. SR-20-003REV_2 only applies to certain earlier model year vehicles of the same type and design (Lancer model years 2008-2010). Later model years 2011-2015 are not mentioned in SR-20-003REV_2. The subject of this complaint is a 2013 Lancer Evolution. SR-20-003REV_2 should be expanded to include newer model year vehicles as the remaining fleet continues to age and deteriorate. A Mitsubishi dealer has confirmed the problem. Repair estimate out of pocket cost exceeds $5500.00 (replacement parts plus 25 hours labor). The vehicle is now considered unsafe to operate on public roads and must be towed away from the dealer.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-07
  • Date Complaint: 2022-11-22
  • VIN: Ja32u2fu7bu
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: While driving the vehicle the headlights will turn off at random intervals. The passenger side rear tail light is out and remains out despite changing the bulb. Water leaks through a gap in the body into the light and the trunk. Headlights need to be reliable in order to ensure safety and visibility, especially at night and during inclement weather. My father is a retired auto mechanic and has been doing his best to troubleshoot the problem. I am experiencing financial hardship at the moment and I cannot afford to bring my vehicle anywhere that would charge. There are no warnings, the lights just stop working periodically and the tail light stopped working about a week ago.

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-07-01
  • Date Complaint: 2022-09-20
  • VIN: JA32U2FU2AU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: The car started flashing a warning sign and loosing power. When trying to accelerate it stops. Eventually it puts the car into a limp mode and will stall altogether. This happens any long distance trip. My car year and model is not the only Lancer being effected by this computer glitch. It’s very dangerous due to the fact that the cars loosing power while you’re driving. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the middle of the highway it will just stop working. All research I have done points to an error within the computer that tells the car when to cool down the transmission. I have seen many blogs, forums and actually know another Lancer owner who’s model is a 2012 and has the exact same issue. I don’t know why this hasn’t been addressed yet when it’s affecting more than just one Lancer here or there. Bad for the engine bad for the transmission bad for my travel. And the worst part is that any mechanic is unable to detect the issue unless the car is actively coding. I’ve had this car for 3 years now and I feel it’s a big safety concern and needs to looked into. First occurrence was on a trip down to a local lake car stalled on the side of a highway this was in 2018. Now any trip further than over 30 miles or more the car will throw this code it looks like a gear and it has a exclamation point in the middle. It’s progressively getting worse and effecting the over all performance more each time I wish to travel. Please find out why this issue is occurring in multiple years of the same model of car because it inconvenient and dangerous. I would hate for myself and my kids to get killed in an accident due to not being able to get out of the way of a bigger vehicle or a truck.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-07
  • Date Complaint: 2022-05-12
  • VIN: JA32V6FV6FU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Without any prior warning lights or issues with the car. While i drove to work, about 10-15 miles away or 20 min drive, i came to a stop at a red light and when it turned green the car could not get into 2nd gear and would juts rev mostly in place. First gear didnt really have any pull. After a few seconds it finally took second gear but it jerked the car off causing it to stop very suddenly and thats when the service transmission light came on. I was stuck at the light for at least 5 minutes, can’t imagine that happening on the highway. I took the car to the dealership they said they found a code P183D which basically means i need a new transmission. This car has barely 90,000 miles and they are quoting me over $15,000 just for the parts. They privided me with a TSB which list my car as a year and model with known issue but told me the repairs are not covered by the manufacturer.

    Vehicle year: 2006

Congratulations on your new Evo! It sounds like you had a great time driving it, but unfortunately, you experienced some issues with the clutch system. It's understandable that you were disappointed with the wear and tear of the clutch, especially since it wasn't covered by the warranty. It's important to be aware of these potential issues when purchasing a car. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  2. Dameon Mayer 2025-05-05

    Vehicle year: 2008

I bought the car with high hopes and loved it for the first month. It was fun to drive and a great car. However, I started to notice some issues with the transmission. Unfortunately, it progressively got worse and started to pop second out when I downshifted. I took it back to Mitsubishi, but their service department was not very helpful. They gave me the runaround every time I called and didn't even provide me with a rental car. It took them a week to remove the transmission, and now I have to wait for Mitsubishi to give the okay to repair or replace it. During all of this, I am paying for a car that I can't even drive, and Mitsubishi won't give me a rental car. It's been frustrating, to say the least.

  4. Sean Tremblay 2025-04-16

    Vehicle year: 2012

I've owned my Evo for two years now, and it's still running strong. I've kept up with regular oil changes and maintenance check-ups without any issues. The acceleration is impressive - once the RPMs hit 4k, you'll feel the power kick in and it's a thrilling experience. While there is some turbo lag, it's only noticeable at speeds below 10mph, and the Evo more than makes up for it with its performance. One of the best things about driving an Evo is taking corners - it handles them with ease thanks to its rally-bred suspension and differential. Even when other cars slow down, the Evo seems to want to go faster. In short, this car is an absolute joy to drive.

It took them a week to remove the transmission, and now I have to wait for Mitsubishi to give the okay to repair or replace it. During all of this, I am paying for a car that I can't even drive, and Mitsubishi won't give me a rental car. It's frustrating, but I'm hopeful that we can resolve this soon.

Great performance right out of the box! The handling is as nimble as the S2000, with just a slight understeer. As the RPMs climb effortlessly, there is very little turbo lag. The TC-SST is superb! The automatic is great in LA traffic, and the Manual Sport just screams for open pavement. Although I have driven stick my entire life (I'm 29), I welcome TC-SST technology as an early adapter. The shifts are fast! I don't have to give up the power as I would driving a torque converter auto! The AWD noise can be clunky sometimes, and the turn radius is a bit larger than I'd like. The gauges could use more driver info, but the seats are AWESOME. The steering wheel is the perfect size. My only gripe is that the car has no

This is my first EVO, and I have to say it's the best value for your money. It catches everyone's eye, including the police! However, if you drive responsibly, you'll be as safe as kittens. It responds well to modifications, with bolt-ons providing a 15 to 22 horsepower gain. They're also relatively inexpensive, making them great for groups of four. However, the power can be overwhelming, so it's best to save it for solo drives. The AWD is amazing, providing excellent grip and acceleration. Launching is a breeze, and the transmission is smooth. The six-speed is a must-have.

This car is definitely worth considering for any car enthusiast! It's powerful, fun to drive, and incredibly reliable - as long as you treat it well. Personally, I've put around 25,000 miles on it so far and it still drives just as smoothly as the day I bought it. I've even noticed that it seems to be getting smoother with time! Of course, I don't push it too hard - just the occasional power spurt here and there. And despite all that driving, I'm still using the original tires, which have great grip in dry conditions and still perform well in heavy rain. This car really sticks to the road, even when taking tight turns at around 50 mph! For someone like me, owning this car is truly a dream come true!

It's such an amazing honor to be the first to write a review on the 2011 GSR! Okay, enough with that nonsense. As I pulled out of the dealership into heavy traffic, it finally dawned on me that I was in a supercar. Just before screeching to a halt to avoid hitting the car in front of me, I realized how lucky I was. Finally, after 30 minutes, I made it to the highway. I hit the pedal to the metal and the twin-scroll turbo unleashed all its fury on that unmistakable 4B11, throwing me back in my seat with brain-crushing torque. I clicked to 4th gear and looked down to see that I was already splitting hairs at 120 MPH. Oh dang, this thing can move! Then, I had to pump fluid.

I bought my Evo last winter after searching for a number of cars in the $40k range. It was definitely the right choice! Before, I used to relax by playing video games, but now whenever I have downtime, I crave to drive my Evo. It's such a fun car to drive! In fact, I can confidently say that only a few cars like the 90-05 NSX, certain 911s, and a few Italian supercars can give you a more exciting experience. Even the GT-R feels less exhilarating for daily driving. I've also learned a few tricks from the forum. For example, when someone tailgates me, I take a ramp with cruise control on and watch them understeer like crazy. And when it snows, I put on my winter tires and have a blast driving around town while others are stuck. What's not to love about owning an Evo?
