The Chevrolet Aveo (/əˈveɪ.oʊ/ ə-VAY-oh) is a five-passenger, front-drive subcompact car (B-segment) marketed by General Motors (GM) since 2002 over two generations. Originally developed by South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motors and marketed as the Daewoo Kalos, the takeover of Daewoo by GM to form GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) resulted in the car's marketing in 120 countries under seven brands (Chevrolet, Daewoo, ZAZ, Holden, Pontiac, Ravon and Suzuki) — prominently as the Aveo.

The second-generation Aveo, developed by GM Korea (formerly GMDAT), was introduced in 2011 and was also marketed as the Chevrolet Sonic in markets including the Americas, Japan, Middle East, South Africa and several Southeast Asian markets. Production of the second-generation model ended in October 2020.

Since 2017, GM marketed the Chinese market Chevrolet Sail sedan in Mexico and other Central American countries as the Aveo. Developed by GM PATAC in China and produced by joint venture SAIC-GM, it was positioned below the more advanced Sonic. In 2023, GM imported a new version to Mexico in a sedan and hatchback form, developed and manufactured by another Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling.

Common 2017 Chevrolet Sonic problems

The 2017 Chevrolet Sonic has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, electrical system, and brakes.

One of the most significant issues is the failure of the AC compressor, which has been reported to have failed twice in some cases. This failure can lead to major leaks and failures in the heating and cooling system, which can cost almost $3000 to repair. Additionally, the engine has been reported to overheat on the highway due to these failures, further exacerbating the problem.

Another issue reported by owners is engine problems, including issues with the timing belt, water pump, and cylinders. These issues can cost thousands of dollars to repair, with some mechanics suggesting that it is cheaper to replace the engine entirely rather than fixing individual components.

The electrical system has also been a source of problems for some owners, with issues such as the chime changing in sound after calling OnStar from the vehicle and speakers crackling after making calls through OnStar.

The brakes have also been a problem for some owners, with issues such as the master cylinder and power brake booster needing to be replaced at low mileage.

These problems have led some owners to describe the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic as a "lemon" and a "money pit," with some reporting that they have spent thousands of dollars in repairs.

It is important to note that these problems may not affect all 2017 Chevrolet Sonic vehicles, and some owners may have had positive experiences with the car. However, these common problems should be taken into consideration when purchasing a used 2017 Chevrolet Sonic. It is recommended that potential buyers thoroughly research the car's history and consider getting a pre-purchase inspection to identify any potential issues before making a purchase.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-28
  • VIN: 1G1JD5SB5H4
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: In June of 2023 I was driving my vehicle and suddenly the Traction Control, power steering and check engine light came on. I was able to get the vehicle safely home without the use of the power steering. Once I shut the vehicle off, it would not start again. I got the vehicle to my local dealership and they diagnosed it as one of the main wire harnesses was rubbing against a bolt near the battery, which is a known issue, and caused an electrical short in the system. It caused the ECU and electronic power steering to short out. They replaced the ECU, but have not been able to replace the eletronic power steering because it's no longer being manufactured. The vehicle at the time of incident was only 6 years old. I feel like this is a violation of the Magnuson-Moss Act. There are no third party vendors that make this part. It has only ever been available through GM directly.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-26
  • VIN: 1G1JB5SH6H4
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Vehicle has 53k miles. I have had the error code p0011 (camshaft, vvt bank 1 too advanced) for most of the time I've had this car. Spend thousands at a certified dealership to get this issue fixed, only for it to pop up again. I was told the solution for this code is a new engine. This was after I spend thousands and my power train warranty expired. Oil changes and Routine maintenance were all done in timely manner. This engine was built to fail.

  • VIN: 1G1JF5SB5H4
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The heating and cooling system has failed numerous times. The water outlet has been defective causing the engine to overheat along with the thermostat housing. The water outlet failed within a month of buying the car. It wasn't even 3 years old and only had 60 000 miles on it. Last month it failed. Just last week the thermostat housing failed. Now today the water outlet failed again. This car really needs investigated and have parts recalled. It's not fair to have a car for this short of time to have these issues. Each time it's been repaired by a certified mechanic.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-09
  • VIN: 1g1jd5sh9h4
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Purchased this vehicle in February 2022 with 105,000 miles. Oil sticker indicated recent oil change and oil color was light and clear. The day after purchase the check engine light came on. Diagnostic scan indicated bad thermostat assembly and 2 oil sensors needed replacement. Radiator fluid was low. AC didn't cool. Repairs completed almost $900. The check engine light came on again the next day. The check engine and check oil lights/alarms need to be actual gauges. The vehicle overheated 3 times due to low coolant and faulty fan sensor fuse. Where is all the coolant going? A leaky hose was replaced but it didn't fix the coolant leak. Of course the car will easily overheat so I keep coolant with me to avoid being disabled during rush hour traffic on the Interstate in 105 degree temperatures. The engine continues to run hot and the check engine light stays on. The oil light/alarm is something new that started last Monday after driving 20 miles to Yukon, OK. No warning of any problem until I exited onto the service road to wait for a green light. The oil alarm/light turned off upon acceleration but returned again when the idle RPM went below 1000. Repairs were estimated at over $2200 for a new oil pump. I requested an engine flush and oil change instead since an oil pump could NOT be located. The oil filter was found to have collapsed but a new oil filter did not fix the low oil pressure at idle. So many defects with this vehicle!!! What the heck???? Odometer reading today is 107,364. It seems Chevy has manufactured a car that will barely make it past 100,000 miles and repair parts aren't available? Something isn't right with this picture. This car isn't safe to drive. Sincerely, NOT-Okay in OKC, OK.

During the crash, the front end of the vehicle was severely damaged but the air bags did not deploy. The driver sustained a head laceration and right and left knee injuries which required medical treatment. A police report was taken at the scene. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet notified. The failure mileage was 120,000.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-14
  • VIN: 1G1JD6SH8H4
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The thermostat has gone out in this vehicle 4 times in the past 14 months. Luckily for me I had the vehicle repaired at a shop that offers a warranty on the thermostat. But I still have to pay out of pocket every single time for a rental car in order for this vehicle to get repaired. I now have to put it back into the shop for the 5th time in 14 months for the thermostat to be replaced yet again because it went out. I am not happy with this as I live in Alaska and it keeps going out in the winter months.

Negative 2017 Chevrolet Sonic car reviews

  1. Allen Quigley 2024-10-29

I purchased my car in January 2019 from a Chevy dealership in Las Vegas as a certified pre-owned car with 41k miles on it. The car ran smoothly until April 2021 when my engine overheated suddenly with no warning. Unfortunately, my dash did not have an engine temperature gauge like other cars, so I was unaware of the engine's temperature while driving. I took it to the shop and the thermostat module needed to be replaced since it was leaking coolant. Two days later, my engine overheated again due to a leaking water pump. These two repairs cost me around $1,000. In February 2022, my coolant reservoir cracked and had to be replaced for around $300. Then in April 2022, my coolant flange, water pump flange, and radiator fan all needed to be replaced, costing me another $1,000. If you are considering purchasing this car, I recommend getting a good warranty. Unfortunately, my warranty did not cover any of the repairs because I did not call them beforehand and take it to a shop in network. Over the past few years, I have spent around $2,500 on repairs, which includes a messed up window seal when I first got the car because it melted from being parked out in the heat. If you live in a hot and dry climate like the Mojave desert, I would not recommend this car. However, if you do decide to get it, always have coolant in your trunk just in case.Other than the features and the value of what you get, the cars overheating issues are not worth it. It's worth noting that GM only acknowledges this being an issue for the 2012-2016 model year Sonics and not the 2017-2019 models, even though it definitely is an issue.

  2. Issac Stamm 2024-10-20

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it with 2000 miles on it and have had a few issues over the years. The radio stopped working after two years and cost me 1000 bucks to fix. A couple of years later, the air conditioner stopped working and I had to replace a valve, which cost me 1800 dollars. Now, at 75 thousand miles, the catalytic converter is having some problems, but I haven't taken it in yet. I'm considering trading it in and moving on, but I'm not sure yet. I've been diligent with regular oil changes and transmission flushes, so it's either just my bad luck or this car is not the best quality. Thanks for listening to my story!

The Sonic Turbo Premier has been a fun temporary replacement for my ten year old BMW X3 while it's in the shop for age-related repairs and maintenance. Although it may not be as powerful as my Bimmer, it still has some positive qualities. The exterior styling is simple and inoffensive, and the cabin is surprisingly roomy and well-equipped with gadgets and buttons. However, I did find the legroom to be a bit cramped, especially for taller drivers like myself. Additionally, the visibility is not great due to the short stubby hood and large headrests. Overall, while the Sonic may not be my first choice for a long-term vehicle, it has served its purpose well as a temporary replacement. As you touch the visually decent plastic trim, you may realize that it is not the softer, richer material it masquerades as, but basic hard plastic straight from a Yugo. However, let's talk about the performance of this car. I mostly drove it in town with speed limits around 45 miles per hour. At first, I thought I was going way too fast until I checked the speedometer and realized that I was actually chugging along about five miles below the speed limit! The car feels a bit strained and bothered when driven at speeds greater than 35 - 40 mph. Still, this is not yet the most fun you can have with the Sonic Turbo. Go find an empty stretch of road without speed bumps (like the access road to my work's parking lot) and floor it. I did just that, going about 30 mph I floored the accelerator and ... absolutely NOTHING happened for at least a second, then the little beast huffed and puffed and lurched forward at the breakneck speed of 40 mph, I almost died laughing. Unfortunately, this lack of performance is less laughable when you have to pull out into heavy, fast-moving traffic. Just be cautious and wait for any acceleration to kick in.

This car had more problems than my Chevrolet Cobalt. Every winter when there is a cold spell, the engine light comes on because there is water buildup somewhere in the motor and freezes. When the temperature gets warmer the light goes off. I had the water pump and coolant lines changed (under warranty) and now I have to have the suspension replaced. We mostly do highway driving, so I'm not sure why it would need replacing?

  5. Jamie Keebler 2024-06-27

I strongly advise against purchasing a Sonic. In my experience, I have owned two of these cars and both have caused me significant issues. The first car had numerous problems and did not even last 5 years. The second car, a 2017 model, has also been problematic and has required multiple visits to the dealership for the same issue. This is unacceptable for a brand new vehicle. Despite being under warranty for 20,000 miles, I have already had to bring it back three times since Thanksgiving due to a camshaft issue. Based on my experiences, I cannot recommend purchasing a Chevy vehicle.

Positive 2017 Chevrolet Sonic car reviews

  1. Cale Bernier 2025-01-05

Hello! Have you considered the 2017 Sonic Hatchback? It has more passenger and cargo room than the new Toyota Corolla Hatchback. Plus, the Sonic LT/RS comes with power drivers seat, heated seats, and pushbutton start, which are not available in the Corolla's XSE hatchback model. The Sonic also has a sunroof, which is not an option in the Toyota. The Sonic's turbo charged cast iron engine with a 6 speed automatic is a great feature, while the Corolla does not offer a turbo and has a cvt transmission. The Sonic's 7 inch screen is built in, unlike the Corolla's which looks slapped on. The Sonic's electric steering is better than the Toyota's, and the ride is surprisingly better than the Corolla's. Visibility is also better in the Chevy Sonic. Additionally, the Sonic costs less than the Toyota and is built in America. It also has a larger back window and can hold more upright luggage. Lastly, the Sonic is quieter inside than a Mercedes S class. The only issue I have is that the Sonic lacks a temp gauge. Why not give it a try?

That's a fantastic car for the price!

This car has decent room for being a compact. I have been averaging 29 mpg in the city and on the highway, even after driving it for 97,000 miles. It has had no major maintenance issues besides normal wear and tear, and there have been no mechanical failures.

In 2016, I managed to stack a bunch of discounts and bought this car brand new for only 14.5K. I was torn between a 2017 Cruze RS and a Sonic, but ultimately chose the Sonic as it was 7K cheaper. The quirky gen 1 styling is definitely a plus for me, and I've had good reliability with it so far (despite the 1.4T being considered less reliable than the 1.8). The 1.4T is a blast to drive and has great acceleration without any turbo lag. The seats are comfortable, the sunroof doesn't leak, and there's a decent amount of space for a compact car. Plus, the road noise is probably the best in its class (it's even quieter than a same year Corolla). Unlike other small cars, it doesn't start rattling at high speeds. There's also enough room under the hood that with a bit of know-how and YouTube, you can easily fix and/or do preventative maintenance at home. The 6-speed automatic is solid, quiet, and doesn't get lost. The only real problem I've had is with the cooling system, but I was able to fix it with a bottle of stop leak. The LT is higher to the ground and puts a lot of strain on the front suspension, but it's still fine and can probably last another 75K. The tradeoff for comfort, styling, and quietness is that you pay more at the pump, as the car averages about 29mpg combined, which is very poor for its class. Overall, I find it fun to drive and unbeatable for the price. If you're buying a used Gen 1 Sonic, I advise using synthetic oil, especially on the 1.4, and changing the Turbo oil feed line (a $40 OEM part that you can easily install at home or have a mechanic do it for 1 hour of labor). Since there's no option for a 1.4T hatch LT, you can put it as an RS model.
