Daewoo Leganza 2001 problems

daewoo logo

The Daewoo Leganza is an executive car (E-segment), sometimes classified as luxury large family car (D-segment), that was manufactured and marketed by the automobile manufacturer Daewoo. The Leganza was available as a front engine, front-wheel drive, four door, five passenger limousine in South Korea over a single generation for model years 1997-2002 and internally designated as the V100.

The Leganza replaced mid-size luxury car Daewoo Prince and was succeeded by the Daewoo Magnus (V200) using a new version of the Leganza's platform. The name Leganza was a portmanteau of the Italian words elegante (elegant) and forza (power).

Development

The Leganza (V100), along with Lanos (T100) and Nubira (J100) were central to Daewoo's effort to develop a proprietary range to replace vehicles previously licensed from GM.

Daewoo turned to global consultants and suppliers in developing the three new lines. Under design direction of ex-Porsche and ex BMW engineering chief Dr. Ulrich Bez, the Leganza was developed in just 30 months, using Daewoo's growing in-house R&D network in Korea, Worthing and Munich along with other global consultants. Transmissions were provided by ZF and engines were sourced from GM Australia.

The Leganza was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, using the themes developed for Giugiaro's 1990 Jaguar Kensington concept, which also heavily influenced the 1991 Toyota Aristo (sold as the first generation Lexus GS outside of Japan). Styling was also compared to the Maserati Coupé, another of Giugiaro's designs. Bodywork achieved a Cd of 0.32 Cd.

Development of the Leganza began at the end of 1993, after work began on the Lanos and the Nubira, delaying the Leganza introduction in some markets. After initial research of the Leganza leading to development of a mid-size executive car, further work on the V100 (prototype name) began. Styling took three months, the summer of 1994, aided by ItalDesign's offices in Kensington. Road tests began in May 1995, ended exactly a year later, and the Leganza was ready for production in February 1997.

Common Daewoo Leganza 2001 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Daewoo Leganza 2001, here are the common problems associated with this car:

  • Electrical Problems:
    • Owners have reported issues such as battery drain, charging problems, malfunctioning sensors, and warning lights related to the electrical system.
    • Electrical wiring problems have also been known to cause issues in the Leganza's electrical components.
    • Proper care and regular maintenance of the car's electrical system are advised to prevent these issues, with repairs potentially including battery replacement or fixing damaged wiring.
  • Fuel System, Suspension, and Brakes:
    • First-generation Leganza models (1997-2002) experienced issues with the fuel system, suspension, and brakes.
    • Second-generation Leganza models (2002-2004) showed improvements in these areas but had their own set of problems, including engine issues and a faulty timing belt tensioner.
    • For Leganzas equipped with the X20SED or X22SE engine, common problems included overheating, misfires, and oil leaks, with maintenance like regular oil changes and coolant flushes recommended to prevent these issues.
  • Camshaft Position Sensor:
    • A faulty camshaft position sensor can cause starting problems, indicated by the engine management warning light appearing on the dashboard.
    • Overheating of the sensor can lead to failures, resulting in starting issues, and replacement of the sensor is necessary to rectify the problem.
  • EGR Valve Blockage:
    • EGR valves are prone to getting blocked with carbon build-up, leading to problems like hesitation, lack of power during acceleration, and poor engine idling.
    • Cleaning out the EGR valve is recommended to address these issues, which can be done using a toothbrush and carb cleaner.
  • ABS Reluctor Ring:
    • The ABS warning light appearing on the dashboard may be caused by a cracked ABS reluctor ring, potentially damaging the ABS sensor.
    • Identifying the affected wheel through a diagnostic check is necessary, followed by replacing the ABS reluctor ring and damaged sensor if needed.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt repairs to ensure the optimal performance and longevity of the Daewoo Leganza 2001.

The Leganza was powered by Holden-sourced D-TEC DOHC 16V I4 engines (two displacements were made using the same block and bore, differing in stroke): 2.0 L (1998 cc) – 131 hp (98 kW; 133 PS) at 5,400 rpm, 185 N⋅m (136 lb⋅ft) at 4,600 rpm of torque – used in models sold in Europe.

Which car company manufactured the Leganza?

Why did Daewoo fail?

Negative Daewoo Leganza 2001 car reviews

  1. Kristopher Harris 2024-07-11

I bought my Laganza used and fell in love with its style (I even mistook it for a Lexus at first!). When I sat in the car, I was pleasantly surprised by the ample leg room, which sealed the deal for me. Although I had to replace the sensor light twice, it was covered under warranty, and otherwise, the car has been very reliable and dependable. I find everything under the hood easy to locate. While the car's get up and go is okay, I would prefer more power when the A/C is on. The gas mileage is fair. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

  2. Norbert Crona 2024-05-27

    This is inadequate.

  3. Jeffrey Marks 2024-05-13

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I purchased it a couple of years ago with 70k miles on it, and now it has 111k miles. Unfortunately, the engine has been making a ticking noise lately, which has been a bit frustrating. Despite doing regular maintenance like oil changes and timing belt replacements, the car has still had some issues. Additionally, the air conditioning stopped working, which was a bummer since it was working perfectly for the first year I had it. My husband likes the power button, but I personally don't use it much. Overall, I don't think I would purchase another Leganza. Thanks for listening!

  4. Ricky Hintz 2024-03-20

I've driven my Daewoo a lot and, overall, it's been a good car. Unfortunately, the company is in trouble, which is a shame because I believe these cars are better than those made by other Korean car makers. The handling can be a bit sloppy for its type of suspension, but that's a minor issue in the grand scheme of things.

  5. Oswald Jaskolski 2024-02-14

The dealership has replaced numerous sensors, yet the engine light persists. Additionally, the air compressor required replacement at only 33,000 miles. However, I am confident that we can resolve these issues and ensure the vehicle is running smoothly.

Positive Daewoo Leganza 2001 car reviews

  1. Afton Carter 2024-11-25

I'm so happy with my purchase of this car, especially since I got it at a great price due to the company going bankrupt. I feel like I got an amazing deal and I plan on keeping it for a few years, so I don't have to worry about the resale value. Overall, I'm really satisfied with my purchase!

  2. Ambrose O'Keefe 2024-11-13

I'm so glad to hear that you had no problems with your car! After reading the expert review, I have to respectfully disagree with their notes on the suspension being less than good. In my opinion, it's a great car at a good price. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good value.

  3. Corbin Wisoky 2024-10-26

I have had my Leganza for over three years and I absolutely love this car. It has great styling, really nice features, and it is a pleasure to drive. I think that this car should have done much better in the US than it did. GM has rebadged them as Suzukis. I would probably replace my Leganza with a comparable Suzuki (Daewoo). Well equipped car, at a really nice price.

  4. Adolfo Bashirian 2024-10-16

I love the car! It's a shame that it's not worth more. I feel like I was taken advantage of when Daewoo went bankrupt!

  5. Larry Bergnaum 2024-10-16

Best car you ever owned! It's a shame Daewoo is no longer in the US. If given time, this car maker would have surely outdone all imports.
