2005 Porsche Cayenne problems
The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by the German company Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle. The first generation was known internally within Porsche as the Type 9PA (955/957) or E1. It was the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. It is also Porsche's first off-road variant vehicle since its Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first Porsche with four doors. Since 2014, the Cayenne has been sold alongside a smaller Porsche SUV, the Macan.
The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A or E2) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Cayenne shares its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the similar Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show. Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology. The third generation (Type PO536) was unveiled in 2017 at Stuttgart.
First generation (E1 9PA; 2002)
The original Porsche Cayenne entered into the global market to a mixed reception, but it proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV and had comparably good handling as well as powerful engines. The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup. In the eight model years of the E1 generation, a total of 276,652 units were produced.
The base model Cayenne is powered by a 3.2-L VR6 engine producing 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the VW engine. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 9.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S.

Common 2005 Porsche Cayenne problems
The Porsche Cayenne, introduced in 2003, was the first SUV model from Porsche, a sports car manufacturer traditionally. Despite its popularity, the first-generation Cayenne had several common problems that affected its reliability and performance.
- Torque Mount Failure: The torque mount on the left-hand side of the engine bay, used to keep the powerful V8 from twisting, is known to have rubber bushings that wear out under the stress of the V8 grunt. This issue can be easily replaced.
- Starter Motor Failure: The starter motor, located under the intake manifold, is prone to failure due to the Cayenne's powerful engine and coolant leaks. This issue can lead to a car that won't start, requiring replacement of the starter motor.
- Cooling System Issues: The cooling system, specifically the plastic coolant lines, is prone to breaking, causing coolant leaks and potential engine damage. This issue can be costly to repair, with some instances reaching upwards of $3,000.
- Center Carrier Bearing Failure: The center carrier bearing of the driveshaft is known to fail, causing vibrations and potentially leading to the car refusing to start. This issue can also be costly to repair, with some instances reaching upwards of $3,000.
- Porsche Communication Management (PCM) Issues: Many Cayenne owners have reported random and weird behavior from the PCM system, including unit restarts, map loading issues, and language loading problems. This issue can be resolved by resetting the system back to the original factory defaults, which will result in the loss of all personal settings.
- Heavy Gear Changes & Noisy Transmission: Early Porsche Cayenne owners commonly experienced heavy downshifts and louder gear shifts from the transmission. This issue is often misdiagnosed as a physical failure in the transmission itself, when the more likely cause is in fact the valve body assembly within the transmission.
These common problems with the Porsche Cayenne 2005, based on complaints from owners, highlight the importance of regular maintenance and inspections when considering purchasing a used Cayenne. It is recommended to have the vehicle inspected by reputable Porsche technicians to ensure it has been properly maintained and to identify any potential issues before purchasing.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-12
- VIN: WP1AC29P95L
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: We purchased the 2005 Porsche Cayenne from my brother-in-law in August of 2022. He had owned the vehicle for at least a year before I purchased it from him. Shortly after the purchase, I noticed the engine light came on. On 09/12/22 a strong smell of fuel was emitting from the vehicle in a Walmart parking lot in Denton, Texas at approximately 1030pm. I noticed a large puddle of gasoline on the ground under the vehicle and it was steady stream of fuel while the vehicle was running. The vehicle was completely unsafe to drive for fear of ignition and fire. Due to the time and location, I had the vehicle towed to my mechanic approximately 3 miles away for diagnosis and/or repair. The closest Porsche dealership was approximately 25 miles away and the tow bill would have been excessive. Mechanic identified the problem as a cracked fuel filter flange/housing that sat on top of the fuel pump. The cracked fuel housing was replaced and the total for parts and labor was $462.48. No leaking fuel since repair. A few weeks later my brother-in -law contacted me and advised he had just received a recall (OCTOBER 2022) in the mail from Porsche for the exact part I had repaired (17V-576 / AH10). He mailed me the recall and I contacted Porsche for a reimbursement. They stated they only refund for repairs done at a Porsche dealership. I believe Porsche should cover the repair cost for their faulty equipment even after the recall was received. A Porsche Service Center would charge Porsche Corporate much more for this repair than what I paid. Please assist me in getting a refund for my expense of ($462.48) for the repair of Porsche's recall. Thanks [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

MY CAR WAS DRIVING FINE BEFORE I PARKED IT, THEN WHEN I TRY TO START IT, I GOT AN ERROR ON THE INFO DISPLAY IN RED: IGNITION LOCK FAULT, ABS BRAKE PROPORTIONING. NO CRANK FROM THE BATTERY, TRANSMISSION LOCKED IN PARK. SO I GOOGLED IT AND FOUND MANY OWNERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD REPORTING THIS ISSUE. THE DRAINAGE UNDER THE WINDSHIELD CAN GET BLOCKED EASILY WITH DEBRIS, AND CAUSE WATER TO OVERFLOW INSIDE THE CABIN AND OR ELECTRICAL MODULES LOCATED IN THE WINDSHIELD COWL AREA. ON THE DRIVER SIDE AS PER VIDEO, I REMOVED THE RUBBER CARPET AND FORCED LIFTED THE PERMANENT CARPET, AND FOUND POOL OF WATER UNDERNEATH, ON THE METAL FLOOR WAS A BUNCH OF WIRES CONNECTING TO THE CAR BATTERY UNDER THE DRIVER SEAT WERE ALL UNDER WATER. I STARTED EMPTYING BUT MORE WATER KEPT COMING, FOAMS, RUBBERS WERE ALL SOAKED. ACCORDING TO THE FORUMS AFTER REMOVING ALL WATER, I NEEDED TO LOCATE 3 SET OF WIRES AMONGST THE BUNCH, THESE 3 ARE JOINED BY TWISTING AND WRAPPED WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE/GAUGE FROM THE FACTORY. THESE WIRES SINCE EXPOSED ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO CORROSION. 1 SET OF WIRE COMPLETELY SNAPPED, APPARENTLY 1 WIRE IS FOR ABS BRAKE, AND THE OTHER IS FOR IGNITION KEY LOCK THAT RENDERS THE CAR IMMOBILIZED. I FOLLOWED THE VIDEO DESCRIBING THE STEPS TO FIX THIS ISSUE MYSELF, AND BIG BOLD LETTERS ON VIDEOS TO DO NOT BRING THE CAR TO THE DEALER AS THEY WILL CHARGE THOUSANDS, IF MODULES NEED REPLACING, RUST AN OWNER RECORDED A VIDEO ONLINE OF HIS CAYENNE DASH STOP WORKING, ALL LIGHTS BLINKING WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION. LUCKILY MINE MALFUNCTIONED WHILE PARKED AT HOME, NOT DRIVING WITH MY FAMILY. I HAVE 2 CAYENNE, A 2005 AND 2008 THAT MY WIFE DRIVES. I NEED TO FOLLOW FORUM INSTRUCTION IN CLEANING THE DRAINAGE AND REMOVING THE GROMMET THAT CAN BE BLOCKED AND CAUSE WATER NOT TO DRAIN.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-06-08
- VIN: WP1AB29P85L
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: IN 2016, AT AROUND 85,000 MILES THE BIG O TIRES, LOCATED AT 3415 S MARYLAND PKWY, LAS VEGAS, NV 89169, INSTALLED FOUR NEW TIRE ON MY CAYENNE S, 2005. THE TIRE MANUFACTURER IS CONTINENTAL AND ALL TIRES ARE OF 275/45/19 SIZE. ANTICIPATING A 470 MILES TRIP ON JUNE 8, 2018 FROM LAS VEGAS TO MOAB, UT, ON THE PREVIOUS DAY I CHECK ALL TIRES FOR PRESSURE AND APPEARANCE. THE PRESSURE OF THE REAR TIRES WAS SET AT 40 PSI. NO VISIBLE DAMAGES WERE DETECTED. ON THE DAY OF THE TRIP, AT 80 MPH THE REAR LEFT TIRE SUDDENLY LOST PRESSURE REQUIRING SIGNIFICANT EFFORTS TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. AS SOON AS I MANAGED TO STOP AND LOOK AT THE PROBLEM TIRE, I NOTICED THAT ABOUT 70% OF THE TREAD LAYER WAS SEPARATED FROM THE BODY OF THE TIRE. AT THAT TIME, THE ODOMETER INDICATED THAT THE TIRES WERE USED ONLY FOR ABOUT 3,500 MILES. WHEN I CONTACTED BIG O TIRE IN LAS VEGAS ON MONDAY, JUNE 11, 2018, THE FIRST COMMENT THE MANAGER WAS THAT THE ACCIDENT WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE TIRE. HOWEVER, TWO DAYS AFTER RECEIVING THE CAR AND THE DAMAGED TIRE, HE INFORMED ME THAT CONTINENTAL REFUSED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY IN THIS CASE. THEY HAVE DETERMINED THAT A LOW AIR PRESSURE CAUSED THE DAMAGE. KNOWING THE FACTS, I BELIEVE THAT CONTINENTALS CONCLUSION IS MOST PROBABLY INCORRECT. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT FOR THE SAFETY OF MILLIONS OF USERS OF TIRES MANUFACTURED BY CONTINENTAL, THIS CASE IS INVESTIGATED.

The Porsche Cayenne is an impressive vehicle with a powerful motor, responsive suspension, and exceptional handling, especially for a 5,000 lb. truck. The tiptronic shifters on the steering wheel are outstanding, and the interior fit and finish are superb. The ergonomics are comfortable, and the driving position is firm and supportive. The quality and design of this truck are German to the nth degree, which is fantastic. The navigation and stereo are both user-friendly, and the sound system is excellent. This vehicle has plenty of usable space, and the back seats are spacious, although folding them down could be easier. In my experience, I've only had two minor issues in 14,000 miles. The first was a rattle in the rear door, which was an easy fix by the dealer. The second was squeaky windshield wipers, which were promptly replaced by the dealer. Overall, I have never had any major mechanical issues.

Typically after nine months, I trade in my cars for something new and different to drive. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo is my first Porsche and SUV, and it drives like a real sports car, not an SUV. Everything in the car is well placed, tight, beautiful, and serves its purpose. You can load the car up with options, and you can also add some of the aftermarket options from many makers. I have had no problems with the vehicle.

I was thrilled with my Mercedes sedan, but when I decided to look for an SUV, I knew I didn't want one made in the US. To my surprise, I found that only two SUVs were German-made. I test drove the Porsche Cayenne and fell in love with the S model because of its powerful V8 engine. I originally planned to buy a 2004 model, but decided to wait for the 2005 version in the hopes that it would come with a telephone.

After test driving five other so-called competitors of the Cayenne, it was no contest when it comes to performance. As a Corvette driver, I have been spoiled with high-end performance cars, but now that my wife and I will be blessed with a child, it was time to think bigger. The Porsche SUV was not on my initial list, but the more I compared, the extra few dollars can be well justified.

This vehicle has proven to be unreliable with high maintenance costs. In just three years, it has experienced a breakdown and required expensive oil changes. Additionally, the drive line has failed, and after only six years or 125000 miles, the engine needs to be replaced at a cost of $9346. As a result, I cannot recommend this SUV. A more reliable option may be a better investment.
