Common 1998 Plymouth Breeze problems

The Plymouth Breeze, manufactured in 1998, is known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. This article will discuss these issues in detail.

  • Engine Won't Start: Some owners of the 1998 Plymouth Breeze have reported that their car won't start. This issue can be caused by several factors, including a bad fuse, a broken wire, or a problem with the distributor cap. In one instance, a car owner reported that their car started for a few seconds and then shut off. They tried to restart the car, but it only turned over and did not crank fully. The car owner replaced the fuse and the distributor cap, but the car still did not start. They also found a small wire that was broken and replaced it, but the car still would not start. The car owner also reported getting codes P0141 and P0138, indicating a problem with the oxygen sensor.
  • Factory Defect in Head Gasket: Some 1998 Plymouth Breeze owners have reported a factory defect in the head gasket that can cause it to go bad. This issue can lead to several problems, including overheating, leaking coolant, and reduced engine performance. If the head gasket goes bad, it can be expensive to replace, and it is recommended that buyers ensure that the car they are buying has had the head gasket replaced or that it has not gone bad.
  • Rough Idle: Another common problem with the 1998 Plymouth Breeze is a rough idle. This issue can be caused by several factors, including a failing ignition coil. A failing ignition coil can create several symptoms, including a check engine light coming on, the engine running poorly or stalling, and increased emissions. Ignition coil replacement can help solve this issue.
  • AC Fan Works, but Car Won't Crank: Some owners of the 1998 Plymouth Breeze have reported that their car's AC fan works, but the car won't crank. This issue can be caused by several factors, including a blown fuse or a problem with the starter motor. In one instance, a car owner reported that their car's AC fan worked, but the car would not crank. They checked all fuses and found that none were blown. The car owner also reported that the four-way flashers worked, indicating that the battery had plenty of power.

In conclusion, the 1998 Plymouth Breeze has several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues include failure in spark plug tube seals, engine won't start, factory defect in head gasket, rough idle, and AC fan works, but car won't crank. Owners of this car should be aware of these issues and take appropriate action to address them.

Why was Plymouth discontinued?

Plymouth (1928-2001): Once a well-known brand under the Chrysler umbrella, Plymouth was discontinued due to overlapping models and declining sales. Oldsmobile (1897-2004): Established in 1897, Oldsmobile faced declining sales and was eventually phased out by General Motors to streamline its brand portfolio.

Why did Oldsmobile go out of business?

Why did they stop making Oldsmobile? General Motors (GM) stopped making the Oldsmobile due to overall mismanagement of the brand that resulted in Oldsmobile going from the #3 best-selling brand in the 1980s selling over a million units, to being an afterthought with consumers in the 1990s and early 2000s.

When did they stop making Plymouth Breeze?

2000

2000: The mid-sized Breeze ended production. This was also the last year for the Voyager minivan as a Plymouth.

Why did Plymouth cars fail?

The demise of Plymouth was due to lackluster cars that were similar to other models offered by other brands in the group, although Chrysler Group had a few tricks up their sleeves with the new PT Cruiser being planned to revive the Plymouth brand.

Why did Plymouth stop?

It's all about the money. As staid as it may sound, the answer has nothing to do with corporate intrigue, malfeasance from competitors, or even cars so bad it killed the brand, even if the Plymouth Prowler didn't help much. Plymouth went the way of the dodo for one simple reason: Money.

What were the problems in Plymouth?

Many of the colonists fell ill. They were probably suffering from scurvy and pneumonia caused by a lack of shelter in the cold, wet weather. Although the Pilgrims were not starving, their sea-diet was very high in salt, which weakened their bodies on the long journey and during that first winter.

STEERING,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-06-15
  • VIN: 1P3EJ46X1WN
  • Components: STEERING,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I HAVE NOTICED THAT A WHITE SMOKE HAS BEEN COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, NOTICEABLY WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED OFF, OR WHEN I AM STOPPED. I HAVE LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD, AND IT SEEMS TO BE COMING FROM BEHIND THE ENGINE, ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. I DID REPLACE THE VALVE COVER CASKET, AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE ISSUE, AND CLEANED THE ENGINE. HOWEVER, IT IS STILL OCCURRING... I NOTICE SATURATION ON THE TWO LINES RUNNING BEHIND THE ENGINES, BUT NOT SURE IF IT A CRACK IN THE CYLINDER HEAD. HOWEVER, I AM NOT LOOSING OIL NOR ANTIFREEZE. ALSO, THEY ARE NOT MIXING IN THE ENGINE. IT IS JUST HAPPENING THERE. I DID FIND ON FORUMS AND ON NHTSA THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE 1999-2000 MODEL YEAR FOR THE STRATUS/BREEZE/CIRRUS WITH A 2.4 LTR ENGINE, AND THAT IT IS MOST LIKELY THE HIGH PRESSURE RETURN LINE FOR THE POWER STEERING. I HAVE NOT YET CHECKED THE FLUID LEVEL IN THE P/S. I HAVE HEARD THAT OTHER CARS HAVE CAUGHT FIRE, AND THAT P/S FLUID IS HIGHLY FLAMMABLE... I CALLED DAIMLERCHRYSLER AND THEY SAID THAT WITH MY VIN ITS NOT COVERED UNDER SAID RECALL, AND THE 2 RECALLS ON THE CAR HAVE ALREADY BEEN ADDRESSED. 1998 PLYMOUTH BREEZE, BASE SDN 2.4L 4CYL ENGINE VIN: [XXX] OWNER(SELF): [XXX] PLEASE NOTE WHAT I'VE FOUND: NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06V001000 NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE05036 SUMMARY: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.4 LITER ENGINES, THE HIGH PRESSURE POWER STEERING HOSE MAY PREMATURELY HEAT AGE AND DEVELOP A LEAK. • VIN: 1P3EJ46C0WN
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1998 PLYMOUTH BREEZE WITH A 2.0 LITER MOTOR. I HAVE ONLY 6000 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE I DRIVE VERY LITTLE WITH IT. I AM 81 YEARS OLD AND DONT DO MUCH DRIVING ANY MORE. I RECENTLY FOUND MOTOR OIL IN MY WATER INSIDE MY RADIATOR. *TR I WAS TOLD BY A CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP THAT MY HEAD GASKET WAS BLOWN. THEY TOLD ME THAT ANY MOTOR BETWEEN 1995-2005 HAD DEFECTIVE HEAD GASKETS AND THAT CHRYSLER CORPORATION HAD CORRECTED THE PROBLEM BY INTRODUCING A NEW REVISED VERSION ON THE HEAD GASKET ...THICKER, MORE DURABLE! ANYWAY THE DEALERSHIP NEW ABOUT IT AS DID MANY PERSONS ON THE INTERNET THAT OWNED THESE VEHICLES FROM THE YEARS THAT I SPECIFIED. SO I CALLED CHRYSLER CORPORATION AND TYLER ASKED ME FOR THE VIN NUMBER TO MY VEHICLE AND TOLD ME THAT I HAD 2 RECALLS ON IT BUT THEY KNEW NOTHING OF A DEFECTIVE HEAD GASKET PROBLEM WITH THE YEARS I SPECIFIED AND WOULD NOT OPT TO FIX IT FOR ME OR ANYONE ELSE FOR THAT FACT. SO I AM REPORTING CHRYSLER CORPORATION FOR THEIR LACK OF HONESTY AND CUSTOMER SUPPORT SINCE WE BALED THEM OUT OF A BAD FINACIAL SITUATION AND NOW LOOK AT THEM. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT THE BAIL OUT WAS NOT WORTH IT. WE SHOULD HAVE LET THEM GO UNDER!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it used with 20,000 miles and have put 165,000 miles on it over the past five years. While I've had to replace the head gasket twice (which seems to be a chronic problem with this car), as well as the brakes, cylinder, and some steering components, the rest of the body is in good shape, with only some rust on the front of the hood. Overall, I've been quite satisfied with my purchase. While it may not be the best car out there, it was definitely worth the price!

The car has 97,000 miles on it and is still running great. Although I had some problems with the head gasket at 70,000 miles, Chrysler fixed it for me. However, I still had to pay around $300 for the repair, which I believe should have been covered by Chrysler due to the defective gaskets they produced. Overall, it's a pretty good car for the cost, but I would still advise people to stay away from Plymouth's.

The Breeze may have its faults, such as oil leaks and a lack of power due to its 2.0 engine, but it has never left me stranded. I have had the head gasket and multiple oil leaks fixed, which has improved its performance. While it may not be the best option for everyone, it still has its merits and can be a reliable choice for some.

I really like this car! I have the 2.4L and it has more than enough power. It has given me no problems, even after 60000 miles. I have taken good care of it and in return, it has never let me down. Surprisingly, for a small car, it has a lot of room, which is great for a big guy like myself!

  5. Darren Reilly 2024-07-27

I appreciate the aesthetics of the car. However, it has experienced multiple issues such as the a/c malfunctioning twice, head gasket and rear brake cylinders replacement, heater coil issues, and now the transmission is making unusual noises and burning oil. Despite these challenges, I am determined to pay off the car before the transmission fails completely.

Hi there! Thank you for considering my car. It has been well-maintained and has a lot of life left in it. With only one previous owner, it has been driven 122,000 miles and has had no major mechanical problems. The 2.4 L engine runs great, although it can be a little sluggish with the AC on. It gets 20 city/26 hwy, which is pretty good for a car of its age. I have serviced the cooling system, transmission, belts & hoses, and given it a tune-up as recommended. The only major item that needed to be repaired/replaced was the fuel pump. The body is still solid and there is almost no rust, which is impressive for a Minnesota car. Let me know if you have any questions!

About to eclipse 100 thousand miles, but only had to do oil leaks and brakes. It could be more comfortable.

Your dad bought this car new in 1999. It has manual windows, locks, and transmission with a 2.0 motor. After your dad passed away, your mom drove it from CT to WA to give it to you so your kids could drive it. The 2.0 motor is not very powerful, but with the manual transmission, it can spin up to 5000+ RPMs for decent getup and go with only one person in it. However, if you load it down with 4 adults, it can be a bit sluggish. On the bright side, it gets 28 mpg combined! There is plenty of room for 4 people, with plenty of legroom in the back. The body is tight, but there are some suspension rattles. The interior has held up well, with lots of interior room and a big trunk for a car of this size. Unfortunately, the head gasket had to be replaced last month for nearly a grand! Other than that, it has been a solid and reliable car. Everything works.

You've got yourself an excellent car with great mileage and comfort!

  5. Norbert Hoeger 2024-10-14

We bought the car new and absolutely loved it during the 6 years we had it. Although we had one issue with the head gasket, it was quickly resolved under warranty. Even after 6 years, the car still felt brand new with its super-tight steering. The 2.4L engine provided great gas mileage and made the car zippy and fun to drive. Unfortunately, the resale value was not as high as we had hoped, and when it was rear-ended, the cost of repairs exceeded the car's value, resulting in it being declared a total loss.
