STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-13
- VIN: WD3PG2EA8H3
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I was driving in a very remote location in central Utah on a paved Utah state highway and I crossed a cattle guard at about 45 mph. Immediately after crossing the cattle guard, the power steering malfunctioned, an alarm sounded and this message in bright orange appeared on the instrument panel display “Power Steering Malfunction. See Owners Manual". I immediately pulled over and stopped the vehicle. Luckily, I had cell service, so I called my Mercedes-Benz dealership and talked to someone in the service department and I also called my mechanic at an independent Mercedes-Benz shop. After these phone calls and I concluded that it would not harm the power steering system to drive, I decided to continue driving -- without power steering assist. It was hard to steer, but not unsafe on the rural 2-lane road nor on rural I-70. After driving about 30 miles in 1/2 hour, I stopped at a rest area and turned off the engine for about 10 minutes. When I restarted the vehicle, the power steering was again functional and has not malfunctioned since then. After returning home I called Mercedes-Benz national customer assistance center. They were very unhelpful. All they would tell was that there was no recall campaign for my vehicle for this issue and that my vehicle is no longer under warranty – information I already knew. The agent told me I should schedule an appointment with my dealership to run diagnostics on the vehicle - not done. This doesn’t make sense to me as the power steering is now functioning correctly. Safety risk: This failure of the electronically controlled power steering system only happens when the vehicle is moving at a higher speed and the tires cross some kind of rough area on the road, such as a cattle guard or a rumple strip, making steering very difficult. See more information the Metris Forum website where others describe this occurrence. https://www.metrisforum.com/threads/another-2016-looses-power-steering-after-cattle-guard.10402/#post-120744.

- Summary: Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain model year 2015-2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris vans. These vehicles have electrical power steering control units with improperly welded contact pins.
- Consequence: The improperly welded pins may lose contact, deactivating the power steering assist and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the electric power steering rack, free of charge. An interim notice is expected to be mailed on November 17, 2017. A second notice will be mailed to owners when parts become available. Owners may contact Daimler's customer service at 1-877-762-8267.

- Summary: Daimler Vans USA LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris vehicles. These vans were to be equipped with the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) feature, however, the installed instrument cluster and steering wheel does not support the function, and thus, the BSM system does not work on the vehicle.
- Consequence: If a vehicle is in the driver's blind spot, but the BSM system does not warn the driver, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy: DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will install the correct instrument cluster and steering wheel to enable the BSM function, free of charge. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on May 8, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy becomes available. The recall began on May 26, 2017. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267.

I've owned my Metris for about a year and I absolutely love it! As the owner of a wine touring company, it has been the perfect vehicle for couples and small groups. While it may be more utilitarian compared to other Mercedes Benzes, it certainly doesn't lack any important features. I find the way it drives to be fantastic, although I do need to sort out a rattle in one of the seats. The amount of space in the 3rd row is incredible and surpasses any other minivan or SUV in its category. I am so happy with my Metris that I am even considering buying a second one for my business!

Hey there! That's a really nice car you have!

I recently purchased an Explorer Conversion van on a 2017 chassis and have had the pleasure of taking it on three cross-country road trips from NY. During our travels, we were able to visit most of the Lower 48 National Parks, as well as dozens of national monuments, state parks, museums, and other attractions. Despite driving through some of the major US deserts and experiencing occasional strong lateral winds, the engine has performed without any issues. Even in extreme temperatures of 110+ degrees Fahrenheit, the A/C worked perfectly. While driving uphill during rain and changing from 'C' to 'E' mode, I did experience a Check Engine Light, but after pulling over, restarting the engine, and switching back to 'C' mode, the CEL turned off. Although I did experience a dashboard rattle during the first year of ownership, it fortunately went away about two years ago and now the van is very quiet. During our most recent trip, we noticed a small round hole in the windshield center that developed into a visible crack on the passenger side. However, thanks to Geico and Safelite, we were able to get it replaced in Helena Mt in just a couple of hours - a true miracle for us!

I'm so glad I bought this van! Even with over 251,000 miles on it, it's still performing exceptionally.

This vehicle is perfect for long trips, as it has ample space for luggage, two dogs, and two cats. It is also great for moving, as it can accommodate beds, sofas, and over 50 boxes. Additionally, it is ideal for yard care. Furthermore, it performs well in rainy conditions, as it is generally above road spray.

I like it! However, I must admit that the seats are not the most comfortable for long distance travel.

Hi there! We've been using our Metris cargo van for our business, driving it about 3 days a week and covering 47k miles so far. We usually carry around 400 lbs of cargo, which has been quite manageable. While we've had a few issues with the van, such as needing to replace the tires and aligning it a few times, we've been able to get them resolved. We did have to replace the strut bushing at 25k miles, and unfortunately, it's gone bad again now that it's out of warranty. We're also experiencing some issues with the A/C and wipers, but we're confident we'll be able to get them sorted out. We've found some helpful discussions on the Metris forum, and while the dealership has been less than helpful, we're grateful for any assistance we can get. Thanks for taking the time to read our story!
