The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common 2020 Gmc Sierra 1500 problems

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is a popular full-size pickup truck, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues by owners:

  • A/C temperature and air delivery mode door actuator failure: This problem has been reported by over 260 owners. When the air delivery mode door actuator fails, the HVAC system cannot deliver air to cool or heat the Sierra's cab. This issue should appear as a fault in the A/C control module, requiring a diagnostic visit and potential repair costs.
  • Fuel level sensor failure: Over 170 owners have reported this issue. The fuel level sensor in the gas tank can read the fuel level incorrectly, requiring replacement. RepairPal technicians recommend replacing the entire fuel pump module on high-mileage GMC Sierra 1500 models, which can cost around $1,000.
  • Touchscreen freezing: This is the most widespread complaint from 2020 Sierra 1500 series owners in the first 5,000 miles. Software updates are available to improve the touchscreen's reliability, but some dealerships may charge around $50 for installation.
  • Premature brake wear: This issue has been reported on the 2020 Sierra 1500 in the first 10,000 miles. Replacing the brake pads costs around $500, while new rotors are roughly $800. There are some stronger brake pads which last longer on the market, costing about $600.
  • Excessive battery drain: This issue affects the 2020 GMC Sierra in the first 20,000 miles, with a diagnosis costing around $50 and a fix costing $20 to $200, depending on the source.
  • Electrical system problems: The 2020 GMC Sierra has a recall related to the electrical system, which may have an intermittent electrical connection between the battery positive cable and the alternator. This can cause the truck to stall and produce electrical arcing, which can start a fire.
  • Brake caliper bolt issue: The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 has been recalled for an issue with the brake calipers, where the bolts used to attach these calipers may not have been heat-treated, making them more fragile.
  • Engine problems: Some customers have reported that their engines are unreliable, with issues such as strange noises and the need for frequent knock sensor replacements.
  • Fuel evaporative canister replacement: As a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 series reaches 100,000 miles, the fuel evaporative canister may need to be replaced for $425.

These common problems with the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 can lead to expensive repairs and inconvenience for owners. It is essential to be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing or maintaining this vehicle.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Transmission failed at 75,000 miles, yes it is available for inspection. Truck went into limp mode on the highway and turned into a very dangerous situation, I was barely able to exit the highway. Yes the dealership Martys GMC in Kingston MA has confirmed that it is transmission failure. My vehicle has been sitting on the lot of Marty's GMC since September 13, 2024 waiting for a backordered part to fix the transmission at an estimated cost of $2,500. The warning check engine light followed by every single lamp on the dash appearing on [XXX] which is the date of transmission failure. After careful research of this issue I have found this is a widespread problem with this particular 10 speed GMC transmission in my 2020 GMC Sierra that I am still paying car payments on. POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
  • VIN: 3GTP9EED9LG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: At 103,000 my 2020 AT4 5.3L V8 had a P0307 code thrown. Cylinder 7 misfire. Driving highway speeds, sudden loud pop and then the service engine light came on and automatic braking engaged, and the idle got extremely rough. Ended up being a bad lifter, bent rod, tore lobe off of the camshaft. Roughly 8,000 for the repair, new cam, new lifters, spark plugs and coil packs. Now only about 3,000 miles later, driving, sped up to pass on the interstate and another misfire, P0306 this time Cylinder 6. Same symptoms check engine light, automatic braking, rough idle. Seems to be another failed lifter and bent rod. Currently awaiting diagnostic for this second misfire issue. When speaking with the tow truck driver and the mechanic both mentioned a significant rise in cases like this. There is definitely something wrong with the design that the manufacturer needs to be help responsible for. I have less than a month ago replaced all the lifters only to have another one fail again.

  • Summary: My truck 2020 gmc sierra 1500 AT4 denali is not working properly since July 2024. I took it to 2 different dealership to get a diagnostic and i finally ended doing the repairs for brake issues. I have been towed 6 or more times and almost experienced 2 car accidents since I drive the truck after the supposedly repairs where done but i ended stranded again with no brakes. The dealership has repair the truck 3 times but im still getting sevaral codes the fact that i had to pay out of pocket and have to deal with this and expose myself to danger and my family in driving a vehicle that is no safety condition its absurd. I call several times the recall GM hotline and i was told GMC 1500 are included in the recalls just not the AT4 and i have a family member with the same truck and same issues she ended up trading in the truck recently since she kept experiencing the same issues over and over again just like me.

Still waiting on gmc to tell me if it's covered under warranty. From my own research this has been a major problem for hundreds of people if not more. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-15
  • VIN: 1GTR9CEK3LZ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The transmission went at 67,000 miles and posed a safety issue when my husband was driving & suddenly couldn't drive above 1st gear. Vehicle is at the GM dealer and has been for weeks, but there have been so many issues with the transmissions of this year, make & model, that the transmissions are on back order and we are told it can be MONTHS before they get one in. The dealer already has another one that has been waiting for once since April. We know of others with this same issue on this make/model/yr, as well as engine issues, but yet there are NO recalls for this issue. The only warning that came on was when the issue occurred- no prior warning or indications. GM is involved but make no comment on why there isn't a recall for an obvious known issue.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-30
  • VIN: 3GTU9DED6LG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Has happened three times. 1st and 2nd time driving down road towing trailer, rear wheels locked up for 12-15’ while driving 50-55mph. I had thought it was my trailer axel. Happened twice within 6 miles. 3rd time was 1 month later. Rear Wheels locked up driving on interstate at 70-75 mph. I estimate that i traveled 1,800 miles between the 2nd and third incident. Vehicle is at the dealership getting inspected for repairs No warning lamps before, almost every warning light came on after incident If this happened on a wet, ice, snow or dirt road this could have caused a serious accident. It would also be bad in a curve. Dealer took for road test but did not have any luck recreating the issue. They checked the differential oil And it didn't have any heavy metals. They are going to take the differential apart to inspect it to verify. They checked my battery and said it needed to be replaced. Also a wheel speed sensor needed to be replaced.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-09
  • VIN: 3GTU9CED6LG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The rear sliding window leaks water inside the cab every time it rains. With water getting into the cab the issue of mold has begun and that could be a serious factor to any children or adults that ride inside the cab of the truck. There is also rust issues that are notable under the rear seats of the vehicle. Water inside the cab can also interact negatively with any electrical components of the vehicle. I tried to get ahold of the dealer and they always say they don't have time to get my truck in. I have read that this has happened to other vehicles that are the same year and model and they just fix it with caulk which does not seem appropriate for a almost new vehicle. The vehicle has not been inspected. There were no warning lamps prior to this issue. A possible symptom was that my back up camera stopped working for a day right after a rain.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-03
  • VIN: 3GTU9CED3LG
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Rear window leak causing whole inside back to get soaked. Have paid hundreds of dollars to have sealed didn’t work. New window didn’t work it still leaks. It’s going to cause interior to mold and body to rust. Dealership and glass business both say it’s body issue and they have seen many GMC and Chevrolets with this issue. Google show 1000s with same problem.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
  • VIN: 1GTU9FEL3LZ
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: GM refuses to fix a known design flaw in the back sliding glass frame on 2020_24 gmc sierra trucks. This issue will generate toxic mold as large quantities of water enter the cabin and can be extremely harmful for certain individuals allergic to mold. GM knows about this issue and tried to secretly advise techs via TSB 18-na-383 to apply sealant on the frame and if customer returns to replace frame. However they do not want to do this outside the 3 year warranty. The back glass on a truck is not a serviceable item.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
  • VIN: 3GTP8DED4LG
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 13540028 Fuel Pump Power Control Module Part failed leaving me stranded and had to get a tow. When the failure occurred, vehicle would not crank and there was no forewarning. It worked and then it didn't. The part is on notional backorder and there seems to be a lot of vehicles out there with the same issue and that just with the mechanics\service departments I've contacted that have had the part on backorder for months. So the fail rate seems high and I'm sure others got stuck in a lot worse situation than me. Then GMC continues to produce vehicles with a newer similar part while not producing the same part for like new vehicles. Which will probably only compound the backorder issue when the newer vehicles eventually have the same issue.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-12
  • VIN: 1GTU9FED0LZ
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuel Pump Drive Control Module (Part No. 13540028). This item is a recall on several other vehicles, but not identified on my year/model. On 4 separate occasions over a 3-4 week period, the engine starting running very rough lost power and stalled while traveling down the road (highways, interstate, and a side street). I was finally able to pull a fault code and research the history of this code and this part on several other GMC/Chevy modeled vehicles. The dealer advised I was lucky to find the part because most of them are on backorder due to the recall on other vehicles. The one I got was for a recall, but the customer hadn't returned in time so they sold it to me. I had a repair garage replace the component on Jan 13, 2024, and haven't had any repeat issues. The check engine light did come on each time with a P129F code. It would reset after the vehicle stalled and was powered off for 10-15 minutes and the symptoms would go away. Each time left me lucky to get my vehicle over several lanes and off the side of the road. The date below was the last time it happened. The first time it happened was on Dec 6th and the vehicle started back up in just a minute or two. I still have the old part if it needs to be sent and evaluated to compare with other recalls on the item in other vehicles.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-29
  • VIN: 3GTU9EET7LG
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Rear Sliding Glass window frame has cracked and allows water to enter the cab of the vehicle. Yes this is available for inspection. The water entering the cab of the vehicle can create mold from moisture build up if left untreated. I was able to have the dealer service center confirm the issue noted in [XXX] but they were unable to repair it as it is outside of warranty. I was able to have an independent 3rd party glass company confirm that it was indeed a manufacturers defect with a cracked housing and not an issue with sealant around the glass itself. No warning lamps or other indications other than water in the back seat of the vehicle. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY:CABLES
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks. The battery positive (B+) cable rings may have been manufactured with excessive glue, potentially causing an intermittent electrical connection between the B+ cable and alternator.
  • Consequence: An intermittent electrical connection between the B+ battery cable and the alternator could cause the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. The intermittent connection could also lead to electrical arcing, which could generate sufficient heat to damage surrounding material, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect for the presence of glue or other contamination at the B+ cable attachment to the alternator and clean the connection and reattach the B+ cable connection, as necessary. If arcing has damaged the cable, nut, or alternator, the dealer will replace the damaged components. All services will be performed free of charge. The warranty period is relatively short and the Intellilink system, which is responsible for all the electronic functions on the dashboard, has been known to malfunction. However, GMC is committed to providing excellent customer service and will work diligently to troubleshoot and repair any issues that may arise. While it is true that some customers have experienced problems with the system, GMC is constantly working to improve its products and provide the best possible experience for its customers. It is important to note that the Intellilink system controls many important features of the vehicle, including audio, GPS, climate control, backup cameras, and side mirrors. GMC takes full responsibility for any issues that may arise and is committed to providing a high-quality product that meets the needs of its customers. While there are many options available in the market, we believe that GMC offers a superior product that is worth considering.

The battery has died on several occasions despite nothing being left on. While driving home, a banging noise was heard from the back driver side, causing the vehicle to lose power and eventually shut down. Despite only having 8,200 miles on the 2020 at4, the vehicle had to be towed to the dealership on a Saturday. Although the dealership has yet to provide an answer as of Monday, I am confident that a resolution will be reached soon.

The review choices did not allow me to select the 6.2 liter engine, which is my preference here in Colorado. However, the 10-speed transmission is a big improvement over my 2017 1500 6.2 with the 8-speed, which I traded in. I must say, the AT4 factory suspension has been impressive and has not required the switch to Bilstein shocks, which both my previous 2014 and 2017 GMC 1500 trucks needed. Kudos to GMC engineers! As someone who does light towing, I feel that slightly stiffer shocks in the rear would be useful. Overall, this is the best of the three GMC1500's I've owned so far, and I love the AT4 package. The only issue for me has been the Goodyear Dura-Track tires that came equipped with the truck, which were terrible for noise and vibration on most roads. However, I switched them out for some Michelin AT tires at about 20k miles, and it made a vast improvement in noise levels and ride quality. I sold the Dura-tracks to a Jeep owner who didn't care about noise. I feel fortunate to have purchased this truck at the end of 2019 before all the chaos in the supply chain showed up. I have about 31K miles on it, and I would definitely buy this truck again. In fact, I have had friends and strangers ask to buy the truck when I'm ready to sell, but I'm not ready yet. Although I have given thought to the 2500 AT4 for its longer bed and higher GVW to be used for hauling a camper, the current price and availability is a deterrent.
