The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

I FOUND NUMEROUS CRACKS IN THE SEAT FRAME RADIATING OUT FROM THAT SAME MOUNTING HOLE. I ALSO FOUND A CRACK THE TOP OF THE SEAT FRAME POSSIBLY CAUSED DURING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. TO REPAIR THE FAILURE I WELDED THE WEDGE SHAPED PIECE BACK TO THE FRAME. I ALSO WELDED THE CRACKS RADIATING OUT FROM THAT MOUNTING HOLE. I NOTICED THAT THE MOUNTING HOLES AT ALL FOUR POINTS WERE MUCH LARGER THAN THE MOUNTING STUDS ON THE FLOOR MOUNTED TRACKS. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE FLARED NUTS USED TO MOUNT THE FRAME TO THE TRACKS DIDN'T SEEM WIDE ENOUGH TO ADEQUATELY COVER HOLES AND PROVIDE THE SUPPORT NEEDED TO PREVENT FAILURE. I REMOUNTED THE FRAME ON THE TRACKS USING LARGE WASHERS UNDER THE ORIGINAL FLARED NUTS TO SPREAD THE STRESS OVER MORE OF THE FRAME SURFACE. DURING THE ORIGINAL INSPECTION I FOUND THAT THE OTHER FRONT MOUNTING POINT HAD STARTED TO DISTORT AROUND THE NUT. I FLATTENED THAT BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL SHAPE WITH A HAMMER. MY CONCERN WOULD BE THAT IF THAT OTHER MOUNTING POINT HAD FAILED DURING A REAR END COLLISION IT COULD HAVE ALLOWED THE SEAT TO PITCH BACK OR BECOME COMPLETELY DETACHED FROM THE FLOOR MOUNTED TRACKS WITH RESULTING INJURIES. IF IT HAD BECOME DETACHED DURING NORMAL OPERATION IT COULD HAVE CAUSED LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. *TR

HE ALSO ATTEMPTED TO LOCATE THE NEEDED PARTS FROM A SALVAGE YARD AND WAS INFORMED NUMEROUS TIMES THAT THE PARTS WAS SO WIDELY NEEDED THAT THEY COULD NOT KEEP THEM IN STOCK. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT NOTHING COULD BE DONE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 171,000.

- Summary: MY 2001 JEEP ACCELERATES WHEN STOPPING AND HAS A SLOW TAKE OFF WHEN ACCELERATING. I STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES THE JEEP ACCELERATED. I HAD TO AGAIN APPLY THE BRAKES. I NEVER KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO STOP. THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT HAS COME ON AND A GAS CAP WAS REPLACED WHEN THIS FIRST HAPPENED BUT NOW THE ACCELERATIONS HAVE STARTED AGAIN. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR CLOSE TO ANY OTHER CAR BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW IF THE JEEP WILL JUST TAKE OFF. ALSO, THE SHIFT GEAR SLIPS EASILY I HAVE TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT TOUCHING THE SHIFT WHILE DRIVING. HAS ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS BEEN FILED CONCERNING THE ACCELERATIONS WHEN STOPPING IN THE 2001 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES? *TR

- Summary: THE LOW COOLANT LIGHT COMES ON AND DEPENDING ON THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATE THE VEHICLE WILL EITHER OVERHEAT, HAVE NO HEAT OR PROVIDE A/C COOLING ONLY WHILE DRIVING AND NOT WHILE SITTING IDLE. I'VE HAD REPAIRS AND COOLANT FLUSHES. THE REPAIRS LAST ONE WEEK AND THEN THE LOW COOLANT LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN AND THE ISSUES START ALL OVER AGAIN. *TR

- Summary: 2001, JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LARADO, BLEND DOOR FAILURES OF HEATER SYSTEM. FAILURE RESULTED IN NO HEAT OR DEFROST SITUATION DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER FORCING DRIVER TO STOP ALONG MOTORWAY. VEHICLE INSPECTED AND DISCOVERED THE HEATER SYSTEM "BLEND DOORS" FAILED. NOT SURE WHEN THE PASSENGER SIDE FAILED, HOWEVER THE DRIVER SIDE RESULTED IN THE VEHICLE NOW NOT BEING DRIVEN DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER. REPAIR QUOTES HAVE BEEN EXTENSIVE AND BEYOND FOR WHAT APPEARS TO BE SERIOUS AND WIDESPREAD SAFETY ISSUE WITH JEEPS UTILIZING THIS HEATING SYSTEM AT THIS TIME VEHICLE IS NOT DRIVEN DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER AS REPAIRS ARE TOO EXPENSIVE FOR ME TO ABSORB AT THIS TIME. FAILURE TO DEFROST WINDSHIELD LEADS TO A SERIOUS DRIVABLE PROBLEM FROM FOGGING WINDOWS.*CN

- Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 JEEP CHEROKEE LAREDO. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 138,131 MILES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HIS VEHICLE STALLED AND HE WAS ABLE TO RESTART IT. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED BEFORE THE VEHICLE STALLED. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC STATED THAT THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR MALFUNCTIONED. THE JEEP DEALER STATED THAT THERE THE TRANSMISSION CAUSED THE STALLING. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 138,120 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 138,131.

HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT TRANSMISSION SINCE I GOT THE NEW CAR AND JEEP KEPT SAYING "IT WAS NORMAL" THEY EVEN HAD A PERIOD OF TIME WHEN THEY EXTENDED THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY TO 100,000 MILES WHICH MY CAR MISSED BY 65 DAYS. I ALSO SEE TOO MANY BLEND DOOR ISSUES THAT JEEP NEEDS TO ADDRESS VS. ME PAYING $850.00 FOR. *TR

- Summary: I OWN A 2001 GRAND CHEROKEE JEEP LAREDO 4X4. THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE EIGHT WAY SEAT. THE HINGED ACTUATOR THAT THE SEAT IS MOUNTED TO HAS FRACTURED CAUSING THE SEAT TO BECOME UNSTABLE. I PERFORMED TESTS THAT REVEALED CRACKS IN THE WELDS AND IN THE COMPONENT PARTS THEMSELVES. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH JEEP AND THEY SAY THERE IS NO PROBLEMS WITH THAT MODEL AND THE SEATS. THEY WILL NOT REPLACE THE PART BECAUSE THE FEEL ITS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
