The Lincoln Aviator is a mid-size, three-row luxury SUV manufactured and marketed under the Lincoln brand of Ford Motor Company — and now in its second generation, with a hiatus from 2006 to 2020.

The first generation Aviator was manufactured for 2003–2005 model years as a rebadged variant of the third generation Ford Explorer — and assembled at the now-closed St. Louis Assembly in Hazelwood, Missouri, alongside the Explorer and Mountaineer.

For the 2020 model year, Lincoln reintroduced the Aviator as a badge engineered variant of the sixth generation Ford Explorer manufactured at Chicago Assembly and offered with a plug-in hybrid variant.

Common 2022 Lincoln Aviator problems

The 2022 Lincoln Aviator has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. One of the main issues is engine defects, with several owners reporting that their vehicles experienced engine issues right away, even with very low mileage. The engine has been known to shut off or stall while the vehicle is in motion, causing safety concerns for drivers. Some have reported that their engines have lost power when they attempt to slow the vehicle, causing them to swerve to safety. These engine issues have been reported to occur on multiple occasions, with many consumers stating that they are hesitant to drive these vehicles until they obtain lasting solutions.

Another issue reported by owners is the reliability of the 2022 Lincoln Aviator. Based on limited data from the Aviator and the Lincoln brand scores, Consumer Reports predicts that the 2024 Aviator will be less reliable than other new cars. This prediction is based on the limited data available for the Aviator, as well as the overall reliability of the Lincoln brand.

In addition to engine defects and reliability concerns, the 2022 Lincoln Aviator has also been reported to have electrical and airbag problems. The author of this article, Brian Jones, a former ASE Certified Master Tech and Parts Specialist, reported finding two holes under both front seats, which may be contributing to fumes and noise in the vehicle. These issues have led some to question whether their 2022 Lincoln Aviator is a lemon.

While the 2022 Lincoln Aviator has many positive features, these common problems have been reported by several owners of the vehicle. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and to consider them when making their purchasing decision.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-22
  • VIN: 5LM5J6XC4NG
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: The display on our 2022 Lincoln Aviator failed, again. It had been repaired by the dealer with a new rear camera. It failed to show the backup view, again, and also that display shows the controls for defrost and other safety features. It was a rainy day, so, we were without a display screen showing the backup camera AND could not turn on our defroster as it is located on that dark screen, also. Our windows fogged due to no defroster, and, we had no back up camera view to show traffic behind us. We called the dealer and, they said wait for a recall, as one on the software is in the making right now. There was no warning that this would happen. after driving the vehicle and parking and restarting it, the display lit up again.

  • VIN: 5LM5J7XC4NG
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: When starting the car at night, the center display will run at full daytime brightness until the driver manually presses one of the up/down display/interior brightness control buttons. Once pressed, the system "realizes" that it's night time and adjusts accordingly. Having the display at full brightness at night is a safety hazard for drivers unaware that you can use the brightness control buttons as a workaround. My local dealership says this is "normal" behavior.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-27
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 5LMYJ8XY5NN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: After dealer did 3 software updates for recalls I experienced 2 safety issues: 1) Wiper blades now do not recline to the proper position. Right blade goes down past windshield & hits the plastic piece making an extremely loud whack. Left blade does not lower to proper position & obstructs the lower view of windshield & the washer on left blade no longer works. 2) More concerning is while driving in reverse (in rain & dark), the car came to a complete & sudden halt practically giving me whiplash & making an extremely loud crash sound. Car came to such a hard & sudden stop I thought I had hit a wall even though there was 1) No warning light displayed or sound to indicate an obstruction or pending crash 2) Nothing displayed on rear camera. Got out to see what I hit & why car stopped but found nothing wrong. Proceeded to continue backing up & it happened again. The car went about 3’ more then same thing happened. Then another 3’ it happened a 3rd time. It jolted my neck 3 times leaving me in pain. This incident was extremely frightening given I’m a handicapped driver & could have been stranded somewhere alone unable to drive the car at all. I suspect these 2 safety issues are related to Lincoln’s recall remedy & software updates as nothing else was done on my vehicle during my recent service other than replacing the front grill emblem.

BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-02
  • VIN: 5LM5J7XC4NG
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: I had several instances and two minor collisions now where the back up camera glitches as well as the warning alert. I’ve come close to hitting object only to stop just in time, however in these two collisions I was I situations where I needed to maneuver faster and needed accurate guidance. I dont recall the screen ever showing up until after the collisions and the louder long warning tone went off right at or just after impact. Both times have cause damage to my car. I’ve never had issues with minor self involved car accidents. My driving record is clean. Reading about the back up camera recalls for the 20 and 21 models sound like what is happening with my car but also with the alert system. There are glitches keeping this safety feature from meeting much needed driving assurance.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-09
  • Crash: 1
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5LM5J7WC1NG
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: On 6/9/22 I ran off the road and down a ravine. I hit a large tree head on and hit some smaller trees on the right side of the vehicle. After the head on collision with the large tree, it broke the frame in two places. The car had severe damage on the front and right side as you will notice in the pictures I am sending. No airbags deployed during this collision. I was shocked that none of them deployed after such a hard impact with the front of the car and the right side. The local police and fire department that arrived on the scene were very concerned that the air bags didn’t deploy. The towing company and body shop owner was also very concerned that the airbags didn’t deploy after he examined the car after the accident. I just want everyone to be aware of this safety feature that failed me after I paid $70k for a car with five star safety ratings.

BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-27
  • VIN: 5LM5J6XC4NG
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: The vehicle back up camera and computer screen went totally dark and would not come back on, so that when I backed out of the garage, I could not see on the rear side of the vehicle, as to any pedestrians walking across my driveway , beside nor behind my vehicle. I drove the vehicle back into the garage and ran my errand in our other car. When I came back from the errand, I tried to get the screen up again, by starting the car, and the HOME page came on the screen, and when I put the vehicle in reverse, it once again, showed the rear view of the driveway and cross way, to see that there was no pedestrian behind me; putting any neighbor child who ran across my drive while the garage walls blocked them from my view, in danger. After that one instance, it hasn't done it since. Today, while in shop for routine maintenance, I mentioned it to the Service Advisor. He said "There's a recall out on that, " I said ,"will you fix it today while I'm here?" He said , "yes'. At home, upon reviewing paperwork ,about what was done, no mention of fixing the recall, nor seeing why the camera screen went dark, was made. So, I called the Dealer and was told "There is no outstanding recall on your vehicle" They have told me I may make an appointment to leave my car at least a day for them to diagnose the problem. There was no warning , before the backup screen on my dash went totally dark. This was one time and, on May 27, 2022. Our vehicle barely has 1000 miles on it. We bought it new in January, 2022. Since the Dealership did not write down my complaint, I decided to give you a written statement.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-26
  • VIN: 5LMYJ8XY8NN
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I have had multiple CHECK ENGINE LIGHT issues where the description is "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP - REGULATORY" and the detailed description is a problem with THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM (EVAP). My cell phone app says fuel vapors are being detected. Three separate times, this check engine light has come on. Three separate times I've brought the vehicle to the dealership. My car only has about 2577 miles on it. It came back from the dealer on Monday -- and today, Tuesday, the check engine light is back on for the 4th time.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-12
  • VIN: 5LMYJ8XY2NN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: CONSTITUENT WRITES REGARDING VEHICLE STALLING ON THEIR 2022 LINCOLN AVIATOR. This is brand new vehicle with 3,000+ miles on it. The first day owned it, around 12-21, the vehicle would not go into drive. A warning message appeared that said 'high-voltage battery warning", "The hybrid powertrain system has detected a fault". It would also flash "Full Accessory Power Active". After some internet searches I found a thread in ford that said "let the car sit for 20mins and it will restart". https://www.mustangecoboost.net/threads/i-think-i-figure-out-how-to-fix-the-full-accessory-power-active.22706/#:~:text=It%20means%20you%20have%20full,press%20the%20start%20button%20again. I did that and vehicle restarted. I made an appt with my local Lincoln dealer, Bill Collins Lincoln, and they inspected the car on 1-18 thru 1-21. They did not find anything wrong with it but did find the codes. They stated they thought the battery was dead. This was impossible due to the fact I drove the car 500 miles from Alabama to KY on 12-21. Today, 2-2-22, my wife was driving home from work and the car shut off on the interstate. When I say shut off, I mean it died at 65mph. She tried to press the accelerator and the car just continued to de-accelerate. The check engine light popped up and said "Stop Safely Now". Luckily, my wife was able pull off the interstate without causing an accident. Once stopped, she turned the vehicle off and tried to restarted it. It popped the same message about "full accessory power" and the car wouldn't start. She tried the push button start to no avail, tried the remote start to no avail. Finally she used her "phone as a key" and it started. She was able to drive home. I have called Lincoln and made them aware of the issues. They have asked for me to bring the car in immediately. I informed them I would be filing a complaint here as well. This car is a $85,000 death trap. Lincoln needs to take this very seriously and an investigation needs to open to find out why this vehicle is behaving like this. It is not safe to drive.

EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-15

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-22
  • VIN: 5LMYJ8XY6NN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On 5 separate occasions my car has given me a warning saying "Stop Safely Now." When I begin to slow down, the car looses all power and I have to coast to a stop somewhere. The first time the car started back up and I was able to drive it again, the following 4 times it had to be towed. Each time I was stranded on the side of the road - once literally on the road because I was unable to get onto the berm because of high snow drifts and the car just stopped, which was a huge safety issue. Each time this has happened it has taken approximately 3 hours for a Lincoln approved tow truck to come and get the vehicle leaving me stranded in the freezing cold with multiple children and no heat in my vehicle. My speed has varied each time this has happened. One time I was in park, another time I was doing 60+MPH and the others were in-between these speeds. I have multiple videos of what happens and have provided them to Lincoln. Lincoln has replaced the battery and also the Powertrain Control Module and nether of these have corrected the problem.

Negative 2022 Lincoln Aviator car reviews

  1. Ransom Batz 2024-11-19

My 2021 Lincoln Aviator has had some issues, including three recalls and three problems that I have experienced personally. However, I am confident that these issues will be resolved and I still believe in the quality of Lincoln vehicles.

  2. Olen Greenholt 2024-11-04

There have been a few recalls and some issues with the front driver side pillar fitting, which can be sharp and potentially cause injury.

  3. Vince Nitzsche 2024-10-04

I am currently in a dispute with Lincoln regarding my 2021 Lincoln Aviator Reserve, which experienced a catastrophic engine failure after only 5 months and 5300 miles. I am confident in my position and am seeking a resolution that includes a replacement vehicle.

  4. Cory Simonis 2024-07-03

The material used in the wheel wells has a soft, but rough texture which snow sticks to. In a fairly short distance on a snowy road, the wheel wells become packed to the point where steering becomes difficult. Although Lincoln Motors claim they have not had any complaints, our local dealer says they have had several.

  5. Christopher Padberg 2024-07-01

I recently purchased a brand new Aviator 2021, but unfortunately, I faced some technical issues with the Fuel Gauge, Rear Camera, software, and rubber. Although the car is comfortable, I found it to be unreliable. Additionally, the local dealer in UAE did not have the necessary experience to solve all the defects smoothly.

  5. Ansel Schiller 2024-09-25

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my recent experience with the vehicle I purchased from your dealership. While I am enjoying the car, I did notice that there was an accident that was not disclosed in the carfax report. If I had known about this beforehand, I would not have considered this vehicle. I have noticed some minor issues with the hood alignment and a missing emblem on the front, which I have brought to the attention of AutoNation. I am hopeful that they will be able to address these concerns, but if not, I understand that there are consumer fraud protections in place for the next 30 days. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
