The Mazda Premacy (Japanese: マツダ・プレマシー, Hepburn: Matsuda Puremashī) is a passenger minivan that was built by the Japanese manufacturer Mazda from 1999 to 2018.

The first generation Premacy was built in Japan and exported to Europe and Asia. A rebadged version was sold by Ford in a few Asian markets (including Japan) as the Ford Ixion or Ixion MAV.

The second generation onward is sold outside Japan as the Mazda5. Ford Lio Ho in Taiwan, which assembles Mazda5 for the local market, adapted a re-badged version as the Ford i-Max from 2007 until 2011.

The first generation Premacy was a two- or three-row, five- or seven-passenger vehicle, while the second generation adds a third row of seats for up to six passengers in American form, and seven passengers outside the United States. Both generations feature near-flat floors, folding or removable second row, and fold-flat rear seats.

Common 2008 Mazda Mazda5 problems

The Mazda5, produced from 2006 to 2015, is generally considered reliable, but certain model years have specific problems. The 2008 Mazda5, for instance, has issues with transmission failure. Owners have reported that the transmission on their compact cars would lock up, causing the vehicle to stop moving. This issue can occur at around 50,000 miles and may require a clutch replacement, which can cost an average of $1,100.

Another common problem with the Mazda5, including the 2010 model, is air conditioning issues. Affected owners have reported that the A/C suddenly makes a loud, vibrating noise when turned on, especially after reaching around 40,000 miles. This problem can be expensive to fix, as repairs may not be covered under warranty.

In addition to these specific problems, the Mazda5 is known for a slipping clutch, air conditioning issues, and noise from the chassis. These issues can affect various model years, including those considered reliable. The Mazda5's reliability rating is 4 out of 5, according to RepairPal, which highlights its overall dependability.

When considering purchasing a used Mazda5, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and potential costs associated with repairs. Always ensure that the vehicle has been properly maintained and inspected before making a decision.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-17
  • VIN: JM1CR293980
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Mazda 5 power steering system fails intermittently. The power steering light comes on and steering becomes extremely difficult to steer. Occasionally, the check engine comes on as well and the engine stalls making the situation even more dangerous. The Mazda 5 is available for inspection upon request. My daughters life was put at risk when the steering fails intermittently potentially causing damage to the car, other vehicles, and injury or death of pedestrians. The car has not been repaired or inspected at this point. There is no warning before the power steering fails. The power steering indicator light is illuminated and occasionally also the check engine light when the power steering failure causes the engine to stall as well. The first occurrence of the issue was January 17, 2022, while my daughter was driving the vehicle. The vehicle recall history shows the power steering had been repaired previously for the same issue.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-28
  • VIN: JM1CR293080
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: We bought 4 of these tires 1/23/2018. The first failed within 3 months (passenger rear). The tire distributor no longer carried them, so we fit the next best ... a different Primewell. Now, the driver side front tire has developed a bulge where the tread and sidewall meet - similar to the first failure. We cannot drive it and - still - the distributor no longer carries THAT tire. We have - as of 9/1/2021 driven the car a TOTAL of less than 14,000 miles since the purchase. The 50K warranty was ignored in the first failure; and we have been told that it is irrelevant in this second one. The size is 205/50R17 for both - all four. Both tires were continuously losing air and had to start carrying a portable air pump. Just noticed this weekend that the driver side tire was ONCE AGAIN low on air. When I went to fill it, noticed the bulge. Do not know hoe long ot has been there ... just noticed it this weekend.

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-06-19

  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: I BOUGHT 4 KUMHO TIRES SIZED 205 50R17 FOR THIS CAR IN SEPTEMBER OF 2015. IN AUGUST OF 2017, AT ABOUT 25000 MILES ON THE TIRES, ONE OF THEM DEVELOPED WHAT WE LATER LEARNED WAS A BELT SEPARATION. THE SYMPTOMS WERE A SEVERE VIBRATION, AND SEVERE PULL. WE REPLACED TWO OF THE TIRES. 10 MONTHS LATER THE CAR DEVELOPED EXACTLY THE SAME SYMPTOMS, AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT ANOTHER OF THE TIRES HAD A BELT SEPARATION. I REPLACED ALL 4 TIRES WITH ANOTHER BRAND. I CALLED KUMHO TO REPORT THE ISSUE, AS THEY CLEARLY HAD A BAD RUN OF TIRES FOR ME TO HAVE TO OUT OF ONE SET. THE PERSON ANSWERING THE PHONE (WARRANTY DEPARTMENT) INSISTED THAT 'BELT SEPARATIONS ARE COMMON', THAT THE RECENT RECALL WAS A "VOLUNTARY RECALL BECAUSE THE ENGINEERS JUST WANTED TO SEE THE TIRES'. I ASKED TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE IN THEIR SAFETY OR ENGINEERING DEPARTMENTS. SHE SAID "WE DON'T HAVE ANYONE LIKE THAT".

AIR BAGS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-06-23
  • VIN: JM1CR293X80
  • Components: AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE CAR BEGAN TO STALL AND SLOW DOWN SUDDENLY. THE CAR'S HEAT INDICATOR LIGHT WENT ON HIGH AND THEN WENT TO COLD. HE COULD NOT DRIVE THE CAR PAST 45 MILES. WHEN MY HUSBAND EXITED THE RAMP OFF THE HIGHWAY THE CAR SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY. THE INCIDENT COULD POTENTIALLY PUT MY HUSBAND IN A DEADLY ACCIDENT HAVING HAD STALLED AND STOPPED ON A HIGHWAY WITH CARS SPEEDING BEHIND HIM. WE WERE TOLD BY A MAZDA DEALER THAT WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THE ENGINE WHICH APPARENTLY BLEW. THEY CLAIM THE ENGINE HAD NO OIL, BUT WE KNOW THE CAR SHOULD HAVE HAD OIL. NO CHECK OIL LIGHT EVER CAME ON. IN ADDITION, THIS CAR STALLED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY 6 MONTHS AFTER WE PURCHASED THE CAR. THAT TIME I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SLOW LANE AND DRIVE IT SLOWLY AS THAT TIME IT ALSO DID NOT ALLOW ME TO DRIVE PAST 45 MILES. THE DEALER FIXED THE PROBLEM STATING THAT IT WAS THE TRANS CONTROL MODULE THAT WAS DEFECTIVE. EARLIER THIS MONTH THE CAR BEGAN TO STALL AGAIN WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY ONCE MORE, THE MECHANIC SUGGESTED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. I FAILED TO MENTION THAT A FEW MONTHS AFTER BUYING THE CAR THE AIR BAG LIGHT WOULD COME ON INDICATING THAT IT WAS NOT WORKING. WE EXPECTED ALL THE TROUBLES WITH THE CAR TO BE ELECTRICAL, BUT EITHER WAY THESE PROBLEMS COULD HAVE CAUSED OUR LIVES. *TR

Negative 2008 Mazda Mazda5 car reviews

  1. Dedric Zulauf 2024-09-22

I recently purchased a 'Zoom-zoom' to replace my old 1992 Mitsubishi Expo 2.4. While the Expo was spacious and had good steering and visibility, I find that the Zoom-zoom is a significant improvement in terms of performance and features. Although the third side window is small, I have not experienced any issues with rear visibility while backing up. The interior design is sleek and modern, with the shifting console lights and key built into the remote control case. The outside trim is stylish and the lack of separate bumpers adds to the car's overall aesthetic. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend the Zoom-zoom to others.

  2. Deondre Kshlerin 2024-07-14

We have owned this car for just over a year now and unfortunately, we have experienced a few issues. Two months after purchasing the car, we hit a stick in the middle of the road which caused a hole the size of a softball in the gas tank. Unfortunately, this was not covered by the warranty. We have also had to replace several gas caps, each costing $65, and a new gas intake. Additionally, we have experienced water spraying out of the vents when the air conditioner is on. We understand that these issues should not occur with a new car. We have invested a lot of money into this car and unfortunately, it has been difficult to trade in for a better car as dealerships are not interested. We hope to find a solution to these issues soon. Thank you for your understanding.

  3. Dan Stracke 2024-07-03

This car has not met my expectations. The size is too small and the interior is easily scuffed. The limited exterior color options are not to my liking. The front passenger seat is cramped and the trunk is not spacious enough with the third row up. The second row is also not very roomy. The air conditioning system is not user-friendly. Additionally, the car is too narrow to fit certain items. Overall, I believe that this car does not offer good value for money.

Positive 2008 Mazda Mazda5 car reviews

  1. Ulises Rempel 2024-11-19

It's great to hear that you've been enjoying your car for the past 8 months! The gas mileage is impressive, and it's wonderful that each person in your family has their own seat. The trunk sounds like it's very spacious, especially with the rear seats down. It's surprising that you don't see more of these on the road, but maybe they're more popular in Canada. I can understand your concern about the front grille being too low, but hopefully, you won't encounter any issues. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Miguel Bartoletti 2024-11-13

I absolutely adore our Mazda5 Sport automatic! My husband and I were searching for a vehicle that could comfortably seat our family of four, as well as two additional guests, grandparents, and so on. I didn't want to go for the minivan option, and we were hoping to avoid a bulky SUV. We checked out the RAV-4 with a third-row seat and the Highlander, but decided to give the Mazda a try. We were immediately impressed by the handling, seat configuration, fuel economy, and overall versatility! It's also quite distinctive, and many of our friends have been really impressed by it. If you're thinking about getting the touring for the engine, we suggest going for the sport auto instead because the engine is very peppy... there's no need to spend extra money.

  3. Darrel Lind 2024-10-19

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read our thoughts on our 2008 Mazda5 Sport. We have had it for over 6 months now and we wanted to share our experience with you. Living in a snowy, hilly area, we have found that the winter handling and hill climbing power are average at best. However, we have been pleasantly surprised by the fuel efficiency, which has been pretty good and maybe even a little better than rated. The interior design is very accommodating and comfortable, and we especially appreciate how easy it is to fold/unfold the rear seats. The controls are also very intuitive. With the third row up, cargo space is minimal, but with it down, we can easily fit our two weeks' worth of groceries and more in the back. So far, we have had perfect reliability. We do have to admit that the black interior is impossible to keep clean, but that's a minor issue. Thank you for reading!

  4. Joshua Harvey 2024-10-11

I bought the Sport with M/T. The vehicle meets all my needs, has lots of room, decent fuel economy, and a good price. The manual transmission takes some getting used to, as it has a very light engagement and is very easy to 'top' a gear. I definitely plan on tinting the rear windows to keep things cooler, but the A/C works great. With almost 3,000 miles on it, I am averaging about 22 mpg. Since all my driving is around town, I find this acceptable but wish for more. The manual adjusting seats required me to get out of the car to raise the seat level. If you are willing to keep the RPMs up, acceleration is good. Overall, I am very pleased and hope time will prove me right.

I was in search of a spacious vehicle that could accommodate my new baby and all the necessary items, while also providing good gas mileage for my 60-mile daily commute to work. As a manual transmission enthusiast, my options were limited. After comparing the Mazda5 to a few mid-size sedans, I found that none could match its space or price. Surprisingly, my wife, who had always been against driving a minivan, loves it so much that she now wants to learn how to drive a manual so that she can drive my car instead of her CR-V. Even our baby seems to enjoy the ride! The Mazda5 is so enjoyable to drive that it feels like a sporty car rather than a Micro-Van, making it a perfect combination of fun and practicality.
