The Mazda Premacy (Japanese: マツダ・プレマシー, Hepburn: Matsuda Puremashī) is a passenger minivan that was built by the Japanese manufacturer Mazda from 1999 to 2018.

The first generation Premacy was built in Japan and exported to Europe and Asia. A rebadged version was sold by Ford in a few Asian markets (including Japan) as the Ford Ixion or Ixion MAV.

The second generation onward is sold outside Japan as the Mazda5. Ford Lio Ho in Taiwan, which assembles Mazda5 for the local market, adapted a re-badged version as the Ford i-Max from 2007 until 2011.

The first generation Premacy was a two- or three-row, five- or seven-passenger vehicle, while the second generation adds a third row of seats for up to six passengers in American form, and seven passengers outside the United States. Both generations feature near-flat floors, folding or removable second row, and fold-flat rear seats.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-11
  • VIN: JM1CR293660
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: THERE ARE TWO SAFETY ISSUES WITH THIS MINI VAN. THE FIRST ONE IS FOR THE DOOR HANDLES/LATCHES ON THE BACK SLIDING DOORS ON DRIVERS AND PASSENGER SIDE. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR IT AND APPARENTLY IT WAS FIXED IN 2009 BUT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM AGAIN THAT IS GETTING WORSE. WHEN I TRY TO OPEN THE DOOR TO GET MY CHILD OUT THE DOOR HANDLE DOES NOT ENGAGE, I HAVE TO TRY TO OPEN FROM INSIDE AND SOMETIMES THAT DOES NTO ENGAGE, SO THEN I HAVE TO SLIDE THE LOCK BACK AND FORTH AND CONTINUE TO TRY TO OPEN THE DOOR UNTIL IT FINALLY OPENS. THIS OBVIOUSLY IS A BIG SAFETY PROBLEM IF WE WERE EVER TO BE IN AN ACCIDENT ETC. I CALLED MAZDA AND THEY SAID RECALL IS CLOSED AND THEY CAN NOT HELP ME UNLESS I WANT TO PAY DIAGNOSTIC FEE OF 140 AND THEN WHATEVER THE REPAIR IS ON TOP OF THAT. THE SECOND PROBLEM IS THE BRAKES. THEY DO NOT WORK WELL UNDER IDEAL CONDITIONS, BUT WHEN IT RAINS SOMETIMES THEY STOP WORKING ALL TOGETHER. I'VE ALMOST BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT SEVERAL TIMES WHEN THEY SUDDNELY GO SOFT AND JUST STOP WORKING. I HAVE TO CONTINUOUSLY PUMP THE BRAKES TO TRY TO GET ANY TRACTION AND THEN STOP DRIVING UNTIL THEY DRY OUT. WE'VE HAD THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM REPLACED AND MECHANICS SAY NOTHING IS WRONG, BUT OBVIOUSLY THIS IS JUST A BAD DESIGN AND SOMETHING IS DEFINITELY WRONG. WE CAN'T AFFORD A NEW CAR BUT DON'T' FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR, NOT SURE WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT.

STEERING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-02-08
  • VIN: JM1CR293960
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: INTERMITTENT LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING. LOSS OF STEERING CAPABILITY AS WELL. THE LOSS IS SUDDEN AND CAUSES THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AS STEERING BECOMES EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. THIS IS DANGEROUS. I ALMOST RAN OFF THE ROAD ONCE AND HIT A MEDIAN ON ANOTHER OCCASION. ITS LIKE A TIME BOMB, YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU WILL LOSE THE ABILITY TO STEER THE CAR. DASH LIGHTS ALL LIGHT UP AS WELL AND SOMETIMES POWER IS RESTORED BUT THE ABILITY TO STEER THE CAR IS NOT. CAR IS OUTSIDE OF THE RECALL YET STILL HAS THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE RECALL ISSUE AND MAZDA CLAIMS NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ISSUE. ADDITIONAL VEHICLES NEED TO BE ADDED TO THE RECALL LIST AS THERE ARE MORE VEHICLES AFFECTED OUTSIDE OF THE VIN'S INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. SINCE. ACCORDING TO MAZDA, THEY COMPLY WITH NHTSA WHEN ISSUING RECALLS, MORE VEHICLES NEED TO BE INCLUDED AS THERE IS A MULTITUDE OF MAZDA 5 OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE AS THE RECALL VEHICLES.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-03-22
  • VIN: JM1CR293X60
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: WE'VE OWNED OUR MAZDA 5 2006 SINCE 2009. THERE WERE 22,000 MILES ON THE CAR WHEN WE PURCHASED IT. IN 2016, IT HAS 138,000 MILES. DURING OUR OWNERSHIP, WE HAVE PURCHASED 2 NEW TIRES AT 60,000, 2 NEW TIRES AT 73,000, 2 NEW TIRES AT 82,000, 2 NEW TIRES AT 104,000, 1 TIRE AT 107,000, 2 NEW TIRES AT 116,000, AND 1 NEW TIRE AT 124,000. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE ABOUT ROTATING AND BALANCING THE TIRES EVERY 5-6,000 MILES. THE TIRES HAVE BEEN PUNCTURED ON AT LEAST 3 OCCASIONS, DUE TO UNEVEN WEAR. WE REPLACED THE FRONT STRUTS AND REAR SHOCKS AT 126,000 MILES IN HOPES OF CORRECTING UNEVEN WEAR (DONE BY THE MAZDA DEALER). WE WERE JUST NOTIFIED TODAY THAT ONE TIRE HAS AGAIN WORN UNEVENLY (ON THE INSIDE, AS HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE ISSUE...) WE ARE CAREFUL DRIVERS AND OWNERS AND HAVE NEVER HAD (NOT HEARD OF) A CAR WITH THESE KINDS OF UNEVEN TIRE WEAR PROBLEMS. MOST MILES HAVE BEEN ADDED IN THE CITY, BUT WE HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE ON SEVERAL LONG-DISTANCE VACATIONS. WE HAVE ALL OF THE DOCUMENTATION BUT DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO UPLOAD AT THIS MOMENT. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WANT THE DOCUMENTS.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-02-12
  • VIN: JM1CR29L260
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: THE MAZDA PART USED IN 2006 IS EXACTLY THE SAME PART USED IN 2007-2009 WHICH HAVE A NHTSA RECALL, SO WHY ISN'T THE 2006 COVERED? IT'S THE SAME PART WITH THE SAME INHERENT DEFECT. OUR POWER STEERING PUMP HAS FAILED WITH LESS THAN 75,000 MILES ON THE CAR. THE FAULT CAUSES THE POWER STEERING LIGHT TO COME ON AND THE PUMP STOPS WORKING MAKING THE STEERING VERY HEAVY, IT CAN HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING, AT A LIGHT, OR STATIONARY. THE PUMP IS ELECTRICAL SO SOMETIMES TURNING OFF THE CAR AND TURNING IT BACK ON "RESETS" THE SYSTEM AND IT WILL WORK FOR A LITTLE WHILE BEFORE FAILING AGAIN.

Negative 2006 Mazda Mazda5 car reviews

  1. Gregorio Hermann 2025-01-04

This car may not be the best fit for Canadian winters. I've noticed that after 15 minutes of idling with the defrost on, the interior of the windows need to be scraped. Additionally, in extremely cold weather, the door latches tend to freeze. It's possible that this car was not tested for performance in Canada during the winter. While I'm not completely satisfied with the car, I've decided to sell it soon. I'd rather take a loss on a car that isn't meeting my needs than continue to experience these issues.

  2. Kenyon Becker 2024-09-20

Hi there! I think this vehicle is a great option for young families. While the third row seats are more suitable for kids, they can definitely come in handy for short drives. The car is very easy to drive, but the seats are quite firm (Mazda calls them 'sport seats' - you can decide for yourself!). Unfortunately, my driver's seat has developed a few squeaks which can be a bit annoying. In terms of fuel efficiency, I get around 24-25 miles per gallon with a mix of city and highway driving, which I think could be better for a 2.3L 4 cylinder with an automatic transmission. Maybe a bigger engine or 5-speed automatic transmission would help? Overall, I think this vehicle is a great choice, and it's a shame that Mazda hasn't advertised it more - it could probably double sales!

  3. Jordy Ernser 2024-09-07

I appreciate your feedback on the vehicle. It seems like there are some issues with the climate control and the key that are causing some frustration. I can understand how that would be concerning. Thank you for sharing your experience with me.

  4. Jerod Collier 2024-04-09

This vehicle has had multiple issues, including problems with the struts, wind noise, locks, key fobs, steering column, and locking mechanisms. Despite the long list of features, it has not lived up to expectations. Even after having the struts changed three times in just 25,000 miles, the issues persist. Additionally, the dealer informed me that the car did not have an alarm after a theft occurred. These problems have been frustrating, but I am confident that they can be resolved with the right attention and expertise.

  5. Reuben VonRueden 2024-04-02

I bought this car because it had extra seats and fair mpg compared to others with extra seating. However, I have had some issues with the tires. They were replaced at 19,000 miles, but unfortunately, they are not suitable for this car. I was told that they can't be rotated because my rims are bent, which causes steering wheel vibration. The rims get bent from potholes because the low profile tires on this car do not protect the rims. In my opinion, the tires/rims on this Mini-Van make this car a bad purchase. If regular tires were on it, it would be a pretty good car. I would advise caution before buying a 5, as it may end up costing you more money than you bargained for!

We purchased this car because we had our third child on the way and it has been terrific! The seating configuration is very flexible and works well. We even took one long trip across the country with the car and it was great. The girls loved it. Although the storage space decreases with the third row of seats up, the small size outside and the large size inside is perfect for us right now. We might have a bit of a challenge fitting everything in on our next trip, but we're excited to make it work!

The Mazda5 is an exceptional vehicle that offers many standard features and is also one of the cheapest cars to insure. Consumer Reports has identified it as the most overlooked vehicle in the industry, and for good reason. In fact, when you consider the price and projected cost of ownership, the Mazda5 is an excellent value. It ranks #5 for the lowest cost of ownership, just behind the Kia Spectra, Nissan Versa, Hyundai Accent, and Pontiac G3. While the Kia Rondo is a great car, it simply can't compare to the Mazda5.

We bought this car two years ago because it was the only one of its kind available in the country. It's smaller than a minivan, but has great space efficiency and a manual transmission. The pros are that it has great space efficiency, a smooth shifting manual transmission, a unique exterior, loads of headroom, and better gas mileage than a minivan. The only cons are that the AC could be stronger and the engine strains a bit. Contrary to reports elsewhere, you will NOT get higher than 31 or 32 mpg even under ideal conditions. We average about 28 mpg. The original tires wore out way too quickly (about 20,000 miles).

At first, we were unsure about getting a 4-cylinder minivan, but we were pleasantly surprised by the power and performance of the 5. My wife was looking for a six or seven-passenger vehicle that was not a behemoth SUV, and this minivan has everything she wanted and more, including a moonroof, 6-CD changer, and airbags, all for under $20k.

We replaced our Protege5 with this car and it's been amazing. It's much better than any of the minivans out there and we didn't want the poor gas mileage of an SUV. Plus, it looks really cool next to our RX-8, both in black, which is the only way we like it. As they say, once you go black, you never go back!
