2021 Mazda Cx-9 problems
The Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by Mazda in Japan since 2006 through two generations With three-row seating, it was Mazda's largest passenger vehicle until the arrival of the CX-90.
Despite being built in Japan at Mazda's Ujina #1 plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, the CX-9 was never offered in the Japanese domestic market. The shorter and narrower Mazda CX-8 was offered in Japan instead.
First generation (TB; 2006)
The first generation CX-9 was originally fitted with a 3.5 L Ford V6 engine, but, in 2008, the engine was changed to a 3.7 L unit producing 204 kW (274 hp) and 366 N⋅m (270 lb⋅ft) of torque. The updated engine was introduced in June 2007 and it was now built by Mazda themselves. This engine was coupled with a six speed automatic transmission. The first generation is based on the Ford CD3 platform that is shared with many Ford and Mazda models; the Ford Edge is its close mechanical sibling. It was launched at the 2006 New York International Auto Show.
Standard safety equipment included blind spot monitoring, backup camera, electronic stability control, traction control, roll stability control, front side impact airbags, and three row side curtain airbags.

Common 2021 Mazda Cx-9 problems
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues range from auto brake collision malfunctions to engine and transmission problems.
One of the most significant problems reported by owners is the auto brake collision malfunction, which can be dangerous and has been experienced by several owners of the 2021 CX-9. This issue has not been resolved by the dealership or Mazda Canada, and it can cause the vehicle to suddenly apply full braking pressure uncommanded, leading to confusion and potential accidents.
Another issue reported by owners is the engine and transmission problems. Some owners have reported that their 2021 CX-9 has had the oil consumption issue, which is covered by a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) from Mazda. This issue can lead to long-term effects if not caught early, and it is not uncommon for the car to consume oil at a higher rate than expected.
Furthermore, some owners have reported that their 2021 CX-9 has had the front sensor issue, which can prevent the use of cruise control under 40 mph. This issue has been covered by Mazda, but it can take a few months for the part to come in, causing inconvenience to the owners.
In addition to these issues, the 2021 CX-9 has been reported to have a problem with the headlights, which can vibrate over bumps. Dealers have checked and found nothing loose, but this issue can be distracting and annoying for the drivers.
Lastly, the 2021 CX-9 has been reported to have a problem with the in-car entertainment software, which can cause glitches and prevent some owners from connecting their phones. This issue has been reported by several owners, but it can be solved by shutting off the system and leaving it off for a few minutes.
In conclusion, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 has several common problems reported by its owners, including auto brake collision malfunctions, engine and transmission problems, front sensor issues, headlight vibrations, and in-car entertainment software glitches. These issues can cause inconvenience and safety concerns for the owners, and it is essential to be aware of them before purchasing a 2021 CX-9.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26

- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Hello, I have been to a Mazda dealer complaining of clicking and squeaky brakes for 2 years now. Dealer replaced both front and back breaks and rotors around 22k year ago and to my surprise the issues persist, currently vehicle is at 49k. There is a TSB( 04-001/22) out for my vin and year, so they know its a manufacturing defect and all they do is throw white break grease and a month later the noise is there again when breaking , backing up. I am not the only one, people of reddit confirm this and so does a general google search. Besides that i love the car and the dealer was super cool about it all but I'm sorry, this is unacceptable, Every time i go get an oil change i ask about a fix and nothing.

- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Consumes over 2 quarts of oil between recommended oil changes. The dealer made excuses about needing to use a different oil but it has not improved the problem. The warning light for low oil went off after less than 3000 miles. It was 2 quarts down.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-18
- VIN: JM3TCBDY7M0
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I was leaving for work when I put my personal items in the front passenger side first and then continued to walk around the car to get to the drivers side. Once I closed the passenger side door the car auto locked with all of my items in it including the key. Thankfully I had my cell phone in my pocket which has access to open the car via the Mazda app but it would not work. The spare key was not at the current location the car was at. We had to call someone out to unlock the car. This poses a safety problem because if I put my child in the back seat and close the door to get to the drivers side and it auto locks with them inside as well as my key I would have to resort to breaking the window to get them out. I reported this to Mazda and they deny that it’s a problem, and I have had the vehicle inspected by Mazda and they claim nothing is wrong with it and reset the computer. No warning prior to this happening and my key has never been locked inside before. The battery in the key is not old or dead.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
- VIN: JM3TCACY2M0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I just purchased this vehicle 2 months ago. Yesterday my oil light came on, I pulled over and checked the oil it was completely low. I had to put a quart of oil in it. After that I did some research and learned this seems to be an issue with some 2021 models the cx9 included. There needs to be a recall on this and Mazda needs to fix this issue. These cars cost way to much to have to put a quart of oil every month.

The back-up camera was on and I began to back into the parking space when the car suddenly lurched/jerked forward and accelerated on its own. The car jumped the parking lot median strip and I hit a tree head on. I had my seatbelt on and the airbag deployed. The car then reversed back off the median into the parking lot. I turned off the car. Insurance company will have it inspected. The vehicle is a total loss. I was injured with a large lower abdomen hematoma and airbag burns on arms, wrists, and chest as well as various bruising. I was fortunate to have not hit pedestrians who were walking in the lot or other vehicles that were parked in the lot. There were no warning lights, messages, sounds. The brake assist did not engage. It was frightening.

WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-08
- VIN: JM3TCBDY7M0
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: I was driving approximately 75-80 mph (speed limit for I-90 is 80 mph) on I-90 Eastbound in South Dakota (approximately 5-8 miles from Sioux Falls, SD) in the left-hand lane (passing lane with a minimal shoulder) when I heard a terrible noise that sounded like I had a flat tire and the car began to pull to the left. I immediately slowed down and steered the vehicle onto the small shoulder on the left-hand side of the interstate. It was at this point I looked out my window (driver's window) and saw the entire left front wheel (not just the rubber tire) rolling by (west in the grassy median of I-90). The vehicle did not roll over, hit another vehicle, or get hit by another vehicle. After coming to a safe stop, I got out of the vehicle and saw that the left front (driver's side) wheel (not just the rubber tire) was gone. There were two (2) other passengers in the vehicle at the time that the wheel fell off who exited the vehicle out of danger of passing cars/trucks/semi tractor trailers on I-90. The vehicle was towed and to my knowledge has not been inspected by the manufacturer. The Hertz rental vehicle was only "inspected" by PurCo claims specialist via pictures as they did not have the vehicle in their possession. There were no warning messages, lamps, lights, or other symptoms prior to the wheel falling off. The wheel fell off on 7/8/2023 on Interstate 90 in South Dakota. After the wheel fell off, it rolled down the median of I-90 bounced up onto the westbound lane of I-90 and struck another vehicle causing that vehicle's airbags to deploy. There were four (4) occupants in that vehicle.

- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-23
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JM3TCBDYXM0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The driver side airbag did not deploy in a front end collision on the drivers side. When approaching a vehicle that had come to a sudden and complete stop, the brakes were applied hard to the Mazda CX-9 in order to stop, but after about 1 second they just totally let go and there was no braking at all and the Mazda continued to move forward until it slammed into the vehicle that was stopped. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-12
- VIN: JM3TCBDY1M0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My 2021 Mazda CX-9 uses excessive engine oil as reported in the Mazda "M-Tip" bulletin MT-005/20 and this manufacturer's defect is reportedly caused by defective valve stem seals as claimed in the class action lawsuit U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Southern Division: [XXX] v. Mazda Motor of America, Inc. The valve stem seal problems allegedly cause excessive oil consumption between regular oil change intervals, which increases the risk of engine damage and failure. I believe Mazda must address this issue as soon as possible and repair my affected vehicle before I suffer catastrophic engine failure or long-term engine damage. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-20
- VIN: Jm3tcbey3m0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 1000 miles before first ever oil change was needed (according to window sticker provided by Mazda) the low engine oil light came on. The oil was low and needed to be toped off and brought directly to dealer for oil change. The same thing happened again 1300 miles before second oil change was required. It became obvious that the brand new vehicle was burning oil for some reason. The dealership tried to tell us that it was because the car was a turbo. We weren’t buying it and told them we wanted it looked at. After brining it into the dealer they mentioned that Mazda had a bulletin for a valve seal fix that might help it stop burning oil. So they admitted that yes it was burning oil. After googling the bulletin I realized that our vehicle is having the same problems that many others with 2021 Mazdas (certain production period) are having. There is currently no recall however there is proof that these problems are damaging our vehicle, putting my wife and children at risk every time they get in the car and Mazda is doing nothing about it. There is also proof that these gases from the burnt oil are damaging other engine systems further increasing the likelihood of an engine failure. Down the road. Chances are this damage is already done, despite this valve seal repair.

I have a lot of faith in Toyota's products, but I must say that this Mazda is a solid vehicle. It is reliable, reliable, reliable, which is what matters most to me. Our 2016 CX9 has had zero problems, and it's a blast to drive (for what it is, a FWD crossover). It is also gas efficient and looks absolutely beautiful (again, for what it is!). I highly recommend it.
-
I can't find anything to dislike about this vehicle. I absolutely love this car.
-
I recently traded in my 2018 lease of CX-9 Touring with Premium for the Signature model. I must say, the 360 camera, heated and cooled seats, and overall quality and design of the car are impressive and can compete with luxury models like Acura MDX, Lincoln, Volvo, and even BMW, Audi, and Mercedes. (I have owned or leased most, if not all, of these brands - our other car is currently a Mercedes). The car itself is great, but Mazda could improve on the dealer experience. Unfortunately, the sales process feels like a used car deal and the support falls short. When I picked up my car, it was missing a bumper black cap and a second key, and I am still waiting for them to be provided, four weeks later. However, despite these issues, I am happy to have put $20k in my pocket and believe that the car is well worth the price.
-
Not only is this a great luxury vehicle, but it's also a fantastic value for the money! The ride is incredibly smooth and quiet, and it handles great in the snow.
-
The Car is an excellent all-around SUV that excels across the board. I would recommend spending time with the car salesman to get a thorough understanding of how the infotainment system works.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I had a bit of an issue with my car recently. The plastic rear mud flap/tire well over assembly on the driver's side fell off while I was driving on the highway. I took it to the dealer and they told me that it's a common problem. Unfortunately, the part costs $189 and it's not available anywhere at the moment. I was a bit surprised that Mazda only secured it with plastic. My car has only done 15,000 miles, so I'm wondering how many more of these I'll have to buy over the life of the car. Thanks for your help!

We purchased our Mazda back in June of 2021 and have been enjoying all of its features. Although we don't use them as much, I wanted to take a moment to write a review about how my SUV has performed. We fell in love with our SUV because it was the only 4-cylinder vehicle with a 3rd row. Everyone else had a 6-cylinder SUV, and due to shortages and Covid, the Kia Sorrento was out of the question. My SUV has about 67k miles, and we have driven it a lot. I did notice that the automatic folding mirrors began to fail, and now only one of them folds properly. Additionally, I have noticed the burning of engine oil, and although we top it off, after another few thousand miles, it's back to low. To be honest, it has been a great SUV, but I think it's time for something new. For the price we paid, about $55k, I am certain I can find something much better with a panoramic sunroof and more engine power for less money.

The 2021 CX-9 Signature is a stunning car. The red paint is absolutely incredible. The captains chairs, both front and back, the wood trim, and the interior/exterior lighting are all top-of-the-line. The new grille really stands out and adds to the car's overall appeal. It also does a great job of dampening road and engine noise. The car's other features, such as iActive cruise control, lane departure, and head's up display, are still just as impressive as in previous years. The infotainment display has been enlarged and now has much improved resolution. The car offers a lot of customization options, such as interior lighting, turn signals, and headlights. Driving the car is a lot of fun, and the new paddle shifters are a nice touch. Although I rarely use them, they add to the car's sporty feel. I do find them a bit awkward to use when turning, but that's a minor issue. Overall, this is a fantastic car. However, I did have a couple of minor issues that prevented me from giving it a higher rating. Firstly, the infotainment system is always on, which can be annoying, especially when starting the engine remotely and forgetting to turn the volume down. Secondly, the outside rear view mirrors are not programmed with the driver's seat position, which seems like an oversight for a Signature edition car. Additionally, if you start the car remotely and then unlock it using your fob to get in, the engine stops and the custom seat position is disabled. While I understand this is likely due to added security measures, it's still a bit frustrating. Overall, though, I highly recommend the CX-9 Signature.
