2008 Mazda Cx-9 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by Mazda in Japan since 2006 through two generations With three-row seating, it was Mazda's largest passenger vehicle until the arrival of the CX-90.

Despite being built in Japan at Mazda's Ujina #1 plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, the CX-9 was never offered in the Japanese domestic market. The shorter and narrower Mazda CX-8 was offered in Japan instead.

First generation (TB; 2006)

The first generation CX-9 was originally fitted with a 3.5 L Ford V6 engine, but, in 2008, the engine was changed to a 3.7 L unit producing 204 kW (274 hp) and 366 N⋅m (270 lb⋅ft) of torque. The updated engine was introduced in June 2007 and it was now built by Mazda themselves. This engine was coupled with a six speed automatic transmission. The first generation is based on the Ford CD3 platform that is shared with many Ford and Mazda models; the Ford Edge is its close mechanical sibling. It was launched at the 2006 New York International Auto Show.

Standard safety equipment included blind spot monitoring, backup camera, electronic stability control, traction control, roll stability control, front side impact airbags, and three row side curtain airbags.

Common 2008 Mazda Cx-9 problems

The Mazda CX-9, introduced in 2007, is a seven-seater SUV known for its roominess, athletic performance, and quick acceleration

. However, like any vehicle, it has faced its share of issues and complaints from owners. This article will focus on the 2008 Mazda CX-9 and its common problems, as reported by owners and mechanics.

  1. Check Engine Light (P0451): A common issue reported by owners is the P0451 Check Engine Light, which is often triggered by a clogged fuel tank pressure sensor . This problem typically arises after rustproofing the car, and while it involves a cheap part, the repair can be labor-intensive. It is recommended to replace the sensor if it is clogged, which should resolve the issue.
  2. Front End Repairs: Several owners have reported the need for front-end repairs on their 2008 Mazda CX-9s . These repairs can include replacing worn-out components, ensuring there are no leaks, and checking for functional issues before purchasing a used CX-9.
  3. Ignition Coils: Ignition coil failures are another common problem with the 2008 Mazda CX-9 . These failures can be minimized by changing the spark plugs at the recommended intervals. If a rear heatshield separates and rubs against the rear propeller shaft, a screeching sound may occur, requiring the replacement or re-securing of the heatshield.
  4. Transmission Issues: While not as prevalent in the 2008 model, transmission problems have been reported in other model years of the Mazda CX-9 . These issues can include leaking front right drive oil seals, thickened grease clogging bearing lubrication channels, and the destruction of splines on the shafts connecting the transfer case and the automatic transmission differential. It is recommended to drill a drain hole in the gearbox housing and update the transmission fluid every 15 to 20,000 kilometers to avoid these problems.
  5. Suspension and Steering Components: The front suspension of the 2008 Mazda CX-9 has weak links, such as supports that can wear out between 20,000 and 50,000 kilometers, causing creaks and knocks . The steering rack can also knock after 100,000 kilometers, requiring a repair kit or, in extreme cases, a new rail. Rear wheel bearings typically last between 100,000 and 150,000 kilometers, and shock absorbers, especially the front ones, need to be replaced more frequently. In 2015, Mazda organized a recall campaign for CX-9s from the 2007 to 2014 model years to replace the front levers due to corrosion and destruction of ball joints, although this recall did not affect countries outside of North America .

In summary, the 2008 Mazda CX-9 has faced several common problems, including Check Engine Light issues, front-end repairs, ignition coil failures, transmission problems, and suspension and steering component wear. Regular maintenance, such as changing spark plugs and updating transmission fluid, can help mitigate some of these issues.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
  • VIN: JM3TB28A280
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: While driving the vehicle the brakes became hard to depress and a hissing came from my steering column, the car would not stop or respond to stop. I had to downshift to Neutral to get the speed slow enough to stop - and had passed through an intersection while in failure. I had also had symptoms I did not know at the time may be related which was at a stop at dunkins or a drive through at a stopped position - where the car would run rough the last few weeks. I thought the rough idle was gas related. I can no longer drive the vehicle and am told this is brake booster/pump issue / that other of the same parts in fords and other manufacturers are now extending customer sat programs like 13N02 because of faulty parts in the brake booster. the vehicle can be towed or seen for this problem. The vehicle has no existing coverage of the faulty brake booster. This is a car insured for my son [XXX][ to drive and It is a safety risk that this went while driving, i'm happy it was myself driving that day. Problem has been confirmed as a brake booster pump/booster failure by a service professional. No warning lights - just not able to stop the car when stepping on the brake. SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-01
  • VIN: JM3TB28V080
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: In 2017 had my front control arms replaced after the driver side CV arm came off of the axle due to a recall. 5 years later (about 30k miles) the same exact situation happened now with the passenger side making a left turn. Thankfully both times I didn’t cause an accident but came close due to the wheel coming off of the axle. Brought to dealership, they had to get approval from corporate for the repair. Got a call 6 days later saying corporate denied the goodwill repair due to being “normal wear and tear” and they told me to call corporate. Just called corporate and they say that the dealership makes that decision. I shouldn’t have to pay for something that was recalled, repaired, and happened again 100% in the same fashion. Normal wear and tear on a CV arm is not 20-30k miles.

STEERING,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-11-25
  • VIN: JM3TB38V480
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: MAZDA CX-9 PROBLEM 130,000 MILES-ON NOVEMBER 25TH, AS I WAS DROPPING MY CHILDREN TO THEIR SCHOOLS, THE DEFROST SUDDENLY STOPS WORKING. I TRY TO TURN THE FAN/HEATER ALL THE WAY, BUT TO NO AVAIL. I HAD TO USE A TOWEL TO WIPE THE WINDSHIELD. AS I PULLED INTO A CURVED SIDE, THE ENGINE TURNS OFF, I TURNED THE IGNITION KEY TO OFF, THEN STARTS THE ENGINE AGAIN, AND THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. I PULLED OUT AND DROVE ABOUT SIX HUNDRED FEET AND PARKED. I CALL A MECHANIC AND I DROVE IT AGAIN FOR A MILE TO THE SHOP. HE OPENS UP THE HOOD AND POUR IN SOME COOLANT AND ALL THE COOLANT WERE ON THE FLOOR. HE IMMEDIATELY TOLD ME THAT COOLANT LEAKS AND OIL IS PROBABLY MIXED AND CAUSES THE ENGINE FAILURE. HE TOLD ME I HAD TO CHANGE THE ENGINE, BECAUSE FIXING IT WILL COST ME OVER TEN GRAND. I DROVE IT HOME, THEN THE FOLLOWING MORNING, I TOOK TO A DIFFERENT SHOP, THEY DID THE DIAGNOSIS AND RELATE THE SAME STORY THAT CHECK CODES SHOWED THREE CODES: P0016, CRANK POSITION SENSOR CORRELATION BANK ONE SENSOR A. 1285 CYLINDER HEAD OVER TEMPERATURE, 1299 CYLINDER HEAD TEMP PROTECTION. THE CODES INDICATE AN OVERHEAT SCENARIO THAT RESULTED IN ENGINE SHUT DOWN. THEY CHECK OIL AND FOUND MILKY SUBSTANCE INSTEAD OF OIL. PRESSURE CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAK PUSHED MILKY OIL OUT OF DIPSTICK TUBE. HEAD GASKET HAS FAILED DUE TO OVERHEATING AND THE COOLANT HAS CONTAMINATED THE ENGINE OIL. THEIR RECOMMENDATION IS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE, ASSEMBLY AND FLUSH COOLING SYSTEM. THEIR TOTAL ESTIMATE IS $10,900. I CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY FOR THIS SERVICE REPAIR. I CANNOT EVEN SPEND THAT MUCH OF MONEY ON ANOTHER CAR. WE BOUGHT THIS CAR THINKING THAT IT WILL TAKE US FOR SOME TIME BEFORE WE'LL NEED ANOTHER CAR. I CONTACTED MAZDA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE, AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS, "WISH THERE WERE NEVER PART FAILURES", NOW, I'M STUCK. SO THIS IS MY STORY!!! SAFETY ISSUES: SUDDEN ENGINE SHUT OFF, DEFROST MALFUNCTION AND STEERING WHEEL.

  • Summary: ONE DAY, MY KEYLESS DON STOPPED WORKING. THE NEXT DAY THE DOOR KEPT LOCKING WHILE I WAS DRIVING ALMOST EVERY TIME I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL. THEN THE DRIVERS DOOR WOULDN'T UNLOCK, WHEN I MANUALLY UNLOCKED THE DOOR IT WAS HARD TO DO. I LUCKILY HAD THE WINDOWS ROLLED DOWN, GOT OUT THE VEHICLE AND AS SOON AS I SHUT THE DOOR I HEAR THE DOOR LOCK AND MY TWO YEAR OLD WAS IN THE BACKSEAT! AGAIN LUCKILY I HAD THE WINDOWS ROLLED DOWN OTHERWISE SHE MIGHT'VE BEEN STUCK! THEN THE ALARM KEPT GOING OFF AND WOULDN'T TURN OFF UNTIL I UNHOOKED THE BATTERY. IMAGINE MY FRUSTRATION. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO A MAZDA DEALERSHIP WHO SAID IT WAS THE DOOR LATCH/ACTUATOR. UPON PAYING HEFTILY WHEN I PICKED UP MY CAR, THE CLICKING OF THE DOOR LOCKS HAD STOPPED BUT THE UNLOCK BUTTON STILL WOULDN'T WORK AND THE ALARM WAS ONCE AGAIN GOING OFF! NOW THE CAR IS STILL AT THE MAZDA DEALERSHIP AND HAD ITS BCM/BCU REPLACED FOR A SUPPOSED 'FIX', I'M SUPPOSE TO PICK IT UP TOMORROW. SO I GUESS WE'LL SEE. THE APPARENT PROBLEM FROM ALL OF THIS? MY CX9 HAS A SUNROOF, WHICH MAZDA KNOWS THESE VEHICLES DON'T DRAIN PROPERLY WHICH CAUSES WATER TO GO TO THE BCM SHORTING IT OUT! THIS IS INEXCUSABLE AND COULD VERY WELL COST SOMEONE'S CHILD THEIR LIFE BECAUSE OF THE DOORS CONSTANT LOCKING AND UNABLE TO UNLOCK SOMETIMES MANUALLY. THE DEALERSHIP HAS SEEN IT ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION AND MAZDA COMPANY HAS EVEN ADMITTED THIS FAULT! SO WHY IS THERE NO RECALL?!

2008 Mazda Cx-9 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2008 Mazda Cx-9.

2019-10-31
  • Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
  • Park It: 1
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2007-2012 CX-7, CX-9, and 2009-2012 Maza6 vehicles. These vehicles had their passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate one, free of charge. The recall began December 3, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 1317F. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 16V356 and 17V012.

  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger side air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began October 4, 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 1317F. Note: This recall supersedes recall 17V-012.

Negative 2008 Mazda Cx-9 car reviews

  1. Braulio Blick 2024-11-24

I leased a 2008 CX9 Grand Touring for two years and then decided to purchase it. Initially, I was quite pleased with the vehicle, but unfortunately, some issues started to arise. At around 50,000 miles, I experienced a power brake failure, which was quite alarming as I had clients in the car with me at the time. When I contacted Mazda, I was disappointed to hear that they were unable to assist me with this potential safety issue, and the representative I spoke with was not very friendly. Since then, I have also had issues with the Bluetooth unit, which would cost around $1,300 to repair. Additionally, the A/C fans sometimes turn on for no apparent reason when I turn off the car, and the wipers start on a dry, sunny day when set to auto. Mazda was unable to provide any answers for these issues, and my mechanic believes that a wheel bearing may be wearing. I have also had to tape the key fobs together to prevent the keys from falling out, and the rubber button on the door lock has fallen out, rendering it unusable. While the car is not terrible mechanically, I have had some issues with fit and finish. I have owned two Toyotas, both of which went well over 200,000 miles, a Nissan with no real issues, and an Acura that I traded in at 200,000 miles (unfortunately for the Mazda). I am not confident that the Mazda will be able to match the reliability of these other vehicles. Lastly, the GPS screen is not as bright as it used to be, but I have been informed that this is a common issue and that there is nothing that can be done about it without replacing the entire unit.

Hi there! I have a 2008 Mazda CX9 with 22,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a few issues lately. One of them is with the relays for the fans. The front relay was sticking and not shutting the fan off, but the dealer replaced it. Now, a few months later, the rear fan relay is doing the same thing. I've also noticed that my sunroof is leaking, which is strange because I never use it. I'm thinking that maybe the excessive heat this summer is to blame. Additionally, my rear window switches have to be reset all the time, which may be related to the sunroof leak. Lastly, I had a problem with my rotors, but instead of replacing them, the dealer cut them. Oh, and my clock is always running 10 minutes behind. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2008 Mazda CX9. Unfortunately, I had a water pump failure at only 77K mileage, and the repair cost me $10K. I'm currently trying to contact Mazda Corporate office to see if they can offer any assistance. I'll keep you posted on any updates. In the meantime, I highly recommend getting an extended warranty to avoid any unexpected expenses.

Positive 2008 Mazda Cx-9 car reviews

  1. Marlon Lowe 2025-01-08

I have a 2008 CX-9 GT, which has been a great car for its year. When I bought it used, it had 241,000KM on the clock, and in the 2.5 years since then, the only issues I've had were with the starter, battery, tires, brakes, and wheel bearings - all things that need updating from time to time. I've loved this vehicle for 2.5 years, but I've decided to upgrade to a newer model. The only thing I wish were different is that it connected to audio via Bluetooth instead of aux. The MPG isn't great, but it's not horrible either - I've had vehicles that were worse.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share our experience with our car that we bought brand new in 2008. We absolutely loved it! It was the most reliable car we have ever owned and it never once left us stranded. We even hauled some huge loads with it and it just kept going and going. We took it on a road trip all the way from Louisiana to Maine, covering thousands and thousands of miles in just 5 days, and it never once gave us any trouble. Sadly, we hydroplaned into a ditch and totaled it at 179,000 miles. But, we never had to do any major repairs on it. The only issue we had was with the tires and wheels, which needed a brake job about every 16 months and had low tire pressure. Overall, it was an amazing car that served us well. Thank you for letting me share our story with you!

We bought a 2008 CX9 Grand Touring FWD 13 months ago and have already driven 20,000 miles. We are happy to say that this vehicle has exceeded all of our expectations. Compared to our previous cars, an Expedition and a Sequoia, we find the CX9 to be much better. The interior of the CX9 is fantastic. The second row seats slide forward, making it easy to access the third row, which has a split seat with enough room for an adult. The CX9 is a joy to drive, with plenty of zoom zoom. Even in our hilly area, the CX9 moves up the hills with ease. It drives more like a sports car than an SUV. The exterior looks great, especially with its 20-inch wheels. Whenever someone rides in it, they are impressed and comment on how nice the interior is and how well it drives.

  4. Kenneth Berge 2024-10-20

This car is really enjoyable to drive. The interior is so comfortable and versatile, and the engine and transmission are incredibly smooth. The climate control, seat configuration, styling, and Bose stereo are all fantastic. I get 19-20 mpg in mixed driving and I don't understand why this large 7-person vehicle continually gets knocked on gas mileage. Sure, if you take off from every stop like a jackrabbit, you'll get 15mpg, but c'mon. I used to hate cars, and I especially hated the minivan I replaced with the CX-9, but I absolutely love driving this one.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share our experience with you. After considering several SUVs, including the Highlander, MDX, Pilot, and Enclave, my wife and I finally settled on the CX-9. Although it wasn't perfect for our needs, we found it to be the best overall SUV. It had great functionality, ergonomics, and to top it off, it didn't look like a box! We were initially considering the Highlander, but we were pleasantly surprised by the CX-9's quality and attention to detail. While the Highlander had better performance and interior storage space, the CX-9 offered many features that we loved, such as a split-row third seat and ample room in all three rows. Overall, we think it was a very good buy. Thanks for listening!
