2011 Volkswagen Routan problems
The Volkswagen Routan is a seven-seat minivan and rebadged variant of the Chrysler RT platform, with revised styling, content features, and suspension tuning from the fifth-generation Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country.
Manufactured alongside the Chrysler and Dodge minivans at Windsor Assembly and marketed in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the Routan debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show and went on sale in the United States in September of the same year as a 2009 model. The Routan's minivan variants include the Dodge Caravan, Ram C/V, Chrysler Town & Country, and Lancia Voyager (export)—that by 2009 have ranked as the 13th best-selling automotive nameplate worldwide, with over 12 million sold.
Production of the Routan was halted in 2012 due to high inventory levels, and Volkswagen announced the 2013 model year would be primarily reserved for rental car companies and other fleets, with limited availability to the public at dealer showrooms. This also held for the 2014 model year Routan.

Common 2011 Volkswagen Routan problems
The Volkswagen Routan, produced from 2009 to 2014, is a minivan developed in collaboration with Chrysler. Despite its promising features, several common problems have been reported by owners, particularly for the 2011 model.
- Defective Timing Chain: The EA888 2.0-liter engine in the Routan has a history of tensioner problems, which can result in a loose timing chain and catastrophic engine failure. This issue has led to a series of lawsuits, resulting in an extended warranty for affected vehicles.
- Battery Drain: Several owners have reported issues with their Routan's battery draining completely, often while the vehicle is parked. This problem may be caused by a parasitic draw, which keeps the battery from holding a charge. In some cases, this issue has been traced back to the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which may have a defect or require a software update.
- Power Train Problems: Some Routan owners have experienced unexpected engine shutdowns during normal driving conditions, resulting in a loss of power steering and brakes. This issue can pose a significant safety risk and is often attributed to power train problems.
- Premature Wear on Brake Pads and Rotors: Routan owners have reported premature wear on brake pads and rotors, which can lead to reduced braking performance and increased repair costs.
- Difficulty Starting: Several owners have reported difficulty starting their Routan, which can be caused by various issues, including electrical problems, fuel system issues, or engine problems.
- Transmission Issues: Some Routan owners have experienced transmission problems, including rough shifting, slipping, or complete transmission failure. These issues can lead to costly repairs and may be caused by various factors, including wear, defects, or maintenance issues.
- Fuel System Problems: Routan owners have reported issues with the fuel system, including fuel pump failures, leaks, and other malfunctions. These problems can lead to reduced fuel efficiency, poor performance, and increased repair costs.
These common problems with the Volkswagen Routan 2011 can significantly impact the vehicle's reliability and overall ownership experience. It is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when making their purchasing decision.

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-15
- VIN: 2v4rw3dg4br
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: While driving on a highway at 65 Mph, vehicle shut down, lost brakes, steering, and all power, had to coast to a stop, narrowly avoiding a collision. Upon exhaustive review, TIPM was faulty, causing starting issues, intermittent power loss, and fuel pump issues. As this van is manufactured by Chrysler (for VW) and their (identical) model has the same issue, it was known and recalled, it is appalling that no recall exists for this VW model. These vans are being financed and bought by families, and like us driven daily with children in them. The issue is widespread, very well known, but as in our case, not disclosed by dealerships as no official action has ever been taken, and no official record exists. We have learned all about it through trial and error, and are having to pay for possibly fatal errors committed on the part of the manufacturer - who, to state again, has in fact already recalled the vehicles due to it being such a wide spread and dangerous issue with a primarily family vehicle. Again, for clarity, the VW Routan is no longer in production, but when it was it was manufactured by Chrysler for VW, and is part for part a Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town and Country. Why is this critical recall in existence for only a portion of the vehicles? This has become a major issue as we have to continue reducing this van until we can sell or trade it.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-11

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-25
- VIN: 2v4rw3dg9br
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My 2011 VW Routan completely lost power on the freeway while driving in heavy traffic. The steering completely locked up (not lost power steering), locked up and all components died while moving. It took two people to break the steering wheel loose so that the van could be pushed out of the road by TDOT. We had the van towed and once removed from the truck it started and ran like normal. Our 3 kids were also in the van which makes the situation extremely hazardous. Previous to this, we paid $1,500 to the VW dealer to replace the TIPM unit because the van wouldn’t start on many occasions. The dealer stated that he knew Chrysler had issued a recall on their vehicles with these same issues but VW hadn’t taken any action. Other info… no dash lights are/were on. Dealer can’t seem to reproduce the issue. TDOT Officer said he’d never seen a vehicle that locked the steering while the car was in motion. This was worse than it loosing all power.

- Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY 2011 VW ROUTAN AT 45 MPH SPEED SUDDENLY THE SPEED DROPPED DOWN TO 20 MPH ON A BUSY ROAD AND EVENTUALLY STOPPED. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO PULL MY VEHICLE OVER TO A LOCAL ROAD. AFTER SHOWING THE VEHICLE TO DEALER THE PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED AS TIMP ISSUE AND REPAIR WOULD COST $1500. LUCKILY IT WASN'T A FREEWAY WITH 65 MPH ROAD, I COULDN'T THINK OF THIS THING HAPPENS ON SUCH ROAD WITH KIDS INSIDE THE CAR. I HAVE CAME ACROSS CHRYSLER GOT SAME SORT OF ISSUES AND THEY RECALLED SUCH VEHICLES. VW ROUTAN IS ALSO SAME BUILT AS CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTY AND VW DIDN'T OFFER ANY RECALLS FOR THESE ISSUES.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-08-01
- VIN: 2V4RW3DG6BR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: THIS VEHICLE IS BASICALLY A CHRYSLER/DODGE WITH VW BRANDING, AND ONE OF THE KEYS IS EVEN A DODGE KEY. IT HAS THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE TIPM AND FUEL RELAY MODULE THAT WAS RECALLED ON THE 2011 CHRYSLER AND DODGE VANS. SEE FUEL PUMP RELAY RECALL NHTSA 14V-530. I'M ASKING THAT IT ALSO BE RECALLED FOR THE 2011 VW ROUTAN SINCE IT'S VERY DANGEROUS THAT MY CAR COULD STOP AT ANY MOMENT. I RECENTLY PURCHASED MY VAN FROM A USED CAR DEALER IN NEW JERSEY WHO NEGLECTED TO EVEN INFORM ME THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE EVEN THOUGH I INFORMED THEM THAT I'D BE DRIVING THE CAR CROSS COUNTRY. WHEN I WAS IN GEORGIA THE CAR STARTED CRANKING, BUT WOULDN'T START AND IT HAS HAD THIS SAME INTERMITTENT ISSUE SINCE I ARRIVED IN FL. IT TOOK A WHILE FOR US TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS EVEN WRONG WITH IT BECAUSE WHEN THE AUTO SHOP RAN A DIAGNOSTIC, NO CODES WERE RETURNED. HOWEVER, WHEN THEY FINALLY GOT THE ISSUE TO OCCUR AGAIN, THEY FOUND THAT TAPPING ON THE FUEL RELAY MODULE IN THE TIPM WOULD ALLOW THE CAR TO START. THEY ADVISED TO TAKE IT TO CHRYSLER BECAUSE IT'S ACTUALLY A CHRYSLER VAN UNDER THE HOOD. WHEN I CALLED CHRYSLER, THEY TURNED ME AWAY BECAUSE THE VIN IS FOR A VW. WHEN I CALLED VW, THEY SAID NO RECALL EXISTED FOR THIS VAN EVEN THOUGH IT'S THE SAME ISSUE. SO, I'M ASKING THAT A RECALL ALSO BE DONE ON 2011 VW ROUTAN'S SINCE THEY ARE EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME DANGEROUS ISSUE CALLED OUT IN THE CHRYSLER RECALL. LASTLY, I EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE BOTH WHILE THE CAR WAS STATIONARY AND WHILE IT WAS ON THE HIGHWAY.

- Summary: STATIONARY-WILL NOT START. THE VAN WILL RANDOMLY NOT START. THE LIGHTS COME ON BUT THE ENGINE DOESN'T START. WE'VE HAD SEVERAL PARTS REPLACED WHEN VW GUESSES WHAT IT COULD BE, AND STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM. I'VE BEEN STRANDED MANY TIMES, HAD THE CAR TOWED, AND THEN VOLKSWAGEN CANNOT FIND A PROBLEM TO FIX BECAUSE THERE IS NO CODE. WE HAD THE ENTIRE TIPM MODULE REPLACED AND STILL HAVE ISSUES WITH RANDOM NONSTARTS. WE TOOK IT TO 2 VOLKSWAGEN DEALERS WHO CANNOT LOCATE A PROBLEM, JUST GUESSING. WE HAD OUR OWN MECHANIC REPLACE SOME CORRODED WIRES, AND STILL NOT FIXED. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. WE HAVE FOUR CHILDREN AND TO BE STRANDED SEVERAL TIMES, NEEDING A TOW, IS AWFUL. VOLKSWAGEN IS NOT HELPFUL. WE HAVE TAKEN VIDEOS OF THE NONSTARTS JUST TO PROVE THAT THIS HAPPENS. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER ALSO TRIED TO START THE VAN. IT MAY START AGAIN AFTER TRYING FIVE MINUTES LATER, OR IT MAY NEED TO SIT OVERNIGHT. WINTER, SUMMER, HOT AND COLD, IT STILL HAPPENS. I'VE DEVELOPED SEVERE STRESS OVER THIS AND WE OWE TOO MUCH TO JUST TRADE IT IN. I DO NOT DRIVE IT UNLESS I HAVE TO DUE TO BEING SCARED IT MAY NOT START. PLEASE RECALL THIS VIN. IT IS A LEMON!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I think this van is absolutely fantastic. It's definitely the most stylish and comfortable one I've come across in my search. This is actually my first time owning a VW, but I can already tell that it won't be my last!
-
This is a fantastic minivan among the choices available. You get the space you need with style, which makes it stand out from the boring Honda, Toyota, and Kia models. I love that it has the VW tag on it, even though it's made by Chrysler. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this car!
-
Hi there! I wanted to follow up on my earlier comments about my Routan. I've put over 24,000 miles on the car in the past 20 months and unfortunately, I've had to replace my front brakes and rotors twice. The rear rotors have also been turned twice and the rear brakes were replaced as well. The good news is that everything has been covered under warranty so far. However, I'm a bit concerned about having to replace the brakes every year once my lease is up and the service contract is no longer in effect. What do you think?
-
A minivan? I never thought I would drive one. However, when my wife expressed her desire for a Toyota Sienna, I stumbled upon this vehicle and it completely won me over. It is the only minivan I would ever consider. The driving experience is akin to a German sports sedan, while the spacious interior rivals that of a luxury car. The auto boasts power everything, with leather Captains chairs in the front and back that recline to a 180 degree position. The rear seat is comfortable and also has power stowaway seats. The rear entertainment system allows for 2 movies at once, making it perfect for parents with children of different ages. It is important to note that this is NOT a Chrysler, and the suspension VW uses is superb.

I bought a car with 80,000 km on it, and now it has 150,000 km. I just changed the oil and it's still going strong! I highly recommend it.
Norval Will 2025-01-02
The 2011 VW Routan is a great improvement over the previous year thanks to design refreshes and a more powerful powertrain featuring a six-speed transmission, the new Penstar 3.6L 283 HP six-cylinder engine, and euro sport-tuned suspension. The build quality of the Routan's interior is excellent with high-quality materials. The exterior styling is nice and not overly boxy like the Dodge/Chrysler models, with sleek sloping lines that are just right. Storage is abundant and replaces the stow n go found in the Routan's cousin. The Routan is an excellent choice over Chrysler, but if you're looking for quality and refinement, Honda and Toyota may be a better choice.

This is my first minivan and I bought it used to save some money. However, I completely regret my purchase. My main complaint is the interior quality. It seems like everything is taped together. Both front seats creak, there are creaks in the pillars, a rattle in the dash, and the right sliding door rattles. Not to mention, the windows rattle when they are down. The suspension on this thing is definitely stiffer, which is fine, but when the interior is built so poorly, it easily shows. The worst part is that the Caravan seems better by a small margin. I am ditching this thing for an Odyssey and willing to lose some cash on my trade-in. That's just how much I dislike it.

I recently traded in my 2010 VW Routan SEL for a Honda Odyssey. Unfortunately, I had a lot of problems with my VW after only 30,000 miles. I have decided to stay away from Volkswagen in the future and no longer trust them. Thank you for listening to my experience.

I will never purchase a Volkswagen vehicle again. In 2010, I bought a Routan for $40K, only to have the company discontinue production of the model two years later. When I attempted to sell the vehicle, even a Volkswagen dealer offered only $12K. I chose to keep the van, but it required thousands of dollars in repairs each year, often with unavailable parts. After a few years, I sold the vehicle for a mere $5K.
