2022 Mazda Cx-9 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by Mazda in Japan since 2006 through two generations With three-row seating, it was Mazda's largest passenger vehicle until the arrival of the CX-90.

Despite being built in Japan at Mazda's Ujina #1 plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, the CX-9 was never offered in the Japanese domestic market. The shorter and narrower Mazda CX-8 was offered in Japan instead.

First generation (TB; 2006)

The first generation CX-9 was originally fitted with a 3.5 L Ford V6 engine, but, in 2008, the engine was changed to a 3.7 L unit producing 204 kW (274 hp) and 366 N⋅m (270 lb⋅ft) of torque. The updated engine was introduced in June 2007 and it was now built by Mazda themselves. This engine was coupled with a six speed automatic transmission. The first generation is based on the Ford CD3 platform that is shared with many Ford and Mazda models; the Ford Edge is its close mechanical sibling. It was launched at the 2006 New York International Auto Show.

Standard safety equipment included blind spot monitoring, backup camera, electronic stability control, traction control, roll stability control, front side impact airbags, and three row side curtain airbags.

Common 2022 Mazda Cx-9 problems

The 2022 Mazda CX-9, a popular SUV, has faced some common problems based on complaints from its owners. Here are the issues in detail:

  1. Spontaneous Stalling: The electrical system of the CX-9 SUV has been reported to shut off and stall by many of its owners. This issue has left some complainants stranded, requiring towing to the closest dealership. After being moved into park, some people claimed the SUV started up without any problems .
  2. Heated Seats Issues: The heated seats in the 2022 CX-9 SUV have been reported to be broken by some owners. Due to this, some areas of the seats failed to heat up at all while other areas overheated and became uncomfortable .
  3. Unintentional Rolling on a Slope: The CX-9 has frequently been reported to accidentally roll off a slope. If the ignition was left on while the car was in park, there were no warning chimes or alarms to alert the public .
  4. Transmission Issues: The Mazda CX-9 transmission is known to jerk at low speeds and temporarily sap power. The 2016 and 2017 model years are when the problem is most noticeable. The same issue has also been mentioned by some users of more recent transmissions .
  5. Suspension Issues: The front suspension of the 2022 CX-9 has been reported to make a clunking noise by many owners. Every time the SUV crosses an uneven section of pavement, this problem arises. Additionally, whenever the SUV stops or starts to move from a stop, some people have complained about a clunking sound coming from the rear suspension .
  6. Brake Light Malfunction: Several CX-9 model years have been reported to have the problem, particularly in colder climates. The SUV's brake light is broken and does not illuminate when applying the brakes. Due to the lack of forewarning to the trailing vehicle, the likelihood of a rear-end collision increases .
  7. Backup Camera Failure: There have been reports of the 2022 Mazda CX-9's backup camera going dark. When the SUV was moved into reverse, owners claimed that the screen would go black. This reduced the ability to see behind you and raised the possibility of a collision .
  8. Engine Unresponsiveness: The Mazda CX-9 reportedly loses responsiveness and fails to accelerate. Collisions have reportedly occurred as a result of the problem, which is said to be very spontaneous .
  9. Exploding Sunroof: Many cx-9 owners claim that their SUV's sunroof exploded with no impact. The complainants assert that the incident occurred suddenly and at varying speeds. The glass fragments entered the cabin and hurt the people inside as well .
  10. Radar Failure: The CX-9's radar has been reported to malfunction and cause problems by many owners. The associated driver assistance features are all disabled as a result of this malfunction. Driving becomes risky when these features are disabled .
  11. Vehicle Speed Control (VSC) Issues: The VSC on the CX-9 is rumored to malfunction and abruptly slow down the SUV. Due to this, some vehicles have slowed down on highways and collided. There have been instances where the VSC activated the automatic emergency braking (AEB) without any nearby objects .
  12. Wiper Issues: The wiper blades for some 2022 CX-9 owners have been reported to separate from their arm. For the other vehicles on the road, this poses a risk .
  13. No “Low Fuel” Warning: There have been some reports of fuel gauge issues where the level of fuel in the tank is not accurately displayed. Sometimes the gauge indicates less than the actual capacity, which causes filling to occur too soon. Sometimes the gauge displays more information than the actual capacity. This can lead to the SUV running out of fuel, leaving the driver stranded .

These issues are based on complaints from owners and may not represent all 2022 Mazda CX-9 vehicles. It is recommended to consult with a Mazda dealership or a professional mechanic for further information and potential solutions.

Negative 2022 Mazda Cx-9 car reviews

  1. Rodrigo Schinner 2025-03-09

Our CX-9 experienced an issue where it burned a quart of oil between oil changes, which unfortunately led to misfiring and violent shaking while driving. Despite there being a service bulletin, the dealer did not acknowledge the problem or offer a solution. As a result, we had to trade it out. It's important to be aware of this issue with Mazda vehicles.

  2. Sidney Hoeger 2025-02-19

I recently purchased a 2021 CX9 Signature in Soul Red Paint with Parchment Napa Leather. The vehicle had good build quality and looked really nice. It also drove very well. However, I did experience some issues with the safety features such as the blind spot and lane departure warning not being accurate, and the collision mitigation or brake assist rarely worked. On the other hand, the 360 camera quality was amazing. Unfortunately, the Turbo Engine problem burning oil was a major flaw. Every 3500-4000 miles, the vehicle would run out of oil. Mazda is aware of the problem and their solution is to top off the oil. They are currently being sued for refusing to repair the valve stem defect in their engines. Hopefully, they will be forced to repair their faulty engines. Despite the issues, I appreciate the car's good looks and smooth ride. However, I will not be purchasing another Mazda in the future.

It is time for me to give my review on my Cx9. I purchased the touring with the premium package and I can confidently say that it has everything you need at this trim level. While I am not a fan of all the new technology features like lane keep assist or collision braking, I do appreciate the blind spot feature. The SUV has been trouble-free for the year that I have owned it, which is expected from a new vehicle. The driving dynamics are great and it handles curvy roads like a dream. The torquee engine has enough horsepower and that signature zoom zoom from Mazda. The interior is luxurious and well-built. While I cannot comment on the long-term reliability of the 2.5 turbo engine, I am happy with my purchase and hope it lasts a long time. Mazda has made great progress since separating from Ford and I hope their cars continue to be fun to drive. I traded in my Mazda CX9 after 18 months due to excessive oil consumption, which I found unacceptable for such a new car.Mazda's engine issue affects both turbo and non-turbo engines. As a first-time Mazda owner, I was disappointed with the reliability of the car. Reliability should be the top priority for car companies, rather than luxury or technology. While Toyota still produces some reliable cars, not all of them are. It's important to do thorough research before making a decision.

We purchased our Mazda back in June of 2021 and have been enjoying all of its features. Although we don't use them as much, I wanted to take a moment to write a review about how my SUV has performed. We fell in love with our SUV because it was the only 4-cylinder vehicle with a 3rd row. Everyone else had a 6-cylinder SUV, and due to shortages and Covid, the Kia Sorrento was out of the question. Our SUV has about 67k miles, and we've noticed a few minor issues such as the automatic folding mirrors failing and the burning of engine oil. However, overall it has been a great SUV. We feel that it's time for something new, and for the price we paid, about $55k, I am certain we can find something much better with a panoramic sunroof and more engine power for less money.

I have been a proud owner of a 2022 Signature for 7 months now. Although there are some areas that could be improved, let me start by highlighting the positives. The seating material is impressive, the large screen is a great feature, and the soft touches over the panels add a luxurious feel. The first drive is surprisingly smooth, with a quiet interior and a torque kick that might make you smirk. The shiny black panels add to the overall luxury environment. The Bose system is pretty good, and you'll never forget you have a Bose because their decision to place a reflective trim around the tweeter on the dash will ALWAYS reflect - day and night. The heated steering wheel heats strictly at the 3 and 9 positions, with some warmth spilling over to 2, 4, 8 and 10. That would be acceptable, except that 3 and 9 are taken up by the steering wheel pillars. No previous car I've owned with heated steering warmed up so little of the steering. Although there are some areas that could be improved, I would like to highlight the positives of this car. Thank you for considering my feedback.I've owned two cars before this one that also scuffed up easily, but the CX-9 takes it to a whole new level of delicacy. Although it wasn't in my top 5 when I was shopping, I was impressed after researching it and finding out it was among the most reliable cars out there, not to mention all the features it had to offer. However, I later found out that its reliability has less to do with it not having problems and more to do with service centers not fixing things or attributing problems to 'normal behavior'. Additionally, the features that put it on par with luxury brands are not executed as well as they are in actual luxury brands. They're all thrown in there almost to appear competitive and get you to buy it. After putting some miles and time into it, I've noticed that the CX-9 has more shortcomings than features. In my opinion, it's best to move on to the next car on your list.

Positive 2022 Mazda Cx-9 car reviews

  1. Percy Crist 2025-06-06

After moving back to the city, I realized that my 20 Toyota Tundra Platinum was not suitable for the urban environment. The truck was too big for my small garage and driving it around the city was a hassle. Although it was a tough decision, I decided to let it go and purchased a 21 CX-9 GT in soul red. I initially wanted a Signature, but I found the 2nd row bench seats to be more practical than the captain chairs. The Mazda is an absolute joy to drive. It feels much smaller on the road than any other 3 row vehicle. The driver inputs are precise, and the powertrain is smooth and well calibrated. The 2.5L turbo with its 300+ft of torque provides a nice shove at low rpms. This engine is not a screamer, and you will seldom need more than 4k rpms. As a result, the engine never feels strained. The transmission shifts quickly and is always ready to downshift. The paddle shifters are very useful for saving the brakes on mountain drives. The brakes are powerful and direct, and the cornering limits are very high with very little body roll. The driving position is perfect, and the seats are very supportive. The heated and ventilated function work well for keeping my back comfortable. I love the infotainment setup. The scroll wheel takes about 5 minutes to figure out and is much better than the distracting push button screens found in most of the competition. The Bose stereo is very impressive, and it has a very clean sound. The HUD is easier to read and keeps my eyes on the road. Another feature that I love is the front camera and 360-degree camera, which is a big plus for getting my car in my small garage. With all the positives of the CX-9, the only weakness would be the lack of cargo/people space. Although I rarely have more than two passengers in my car, it is nice to have the third row for occasional use. And honestly, if you need something to haul 6 or more passengers, a minivan would be a better choice than any 3-row crossover. If you love driving and require a vehicle that is more spacious than a 5 passenger crossover, I would highly recommend taking an extended test drive of a CX-9. It is sure to bring a big smile to your face.

  2. Ricardo Daugherty 2025-06-03

The CX9 is luxurious and fun to drive. We also have the CX5, which we love. The power from the 2.5 turbo is great, especially since we live in the mountains where torque is important. Although it's not as big as some of the competition, it makes up for it in nimble handling.

  3. Nathanael Gorczany 2025-05-13

Very comfortable and peppy! It's great to hear that you're getting almost 30mpg on your daily commute. Although, it's understandable that you only got 21mpg on a long road trip with a big rooftop brick full of luggage. After removing the vacation brick, the fuel economy returned to normal. Keep on zooming!

  4. Michael Kutch 2025-04-24

Interior was well thought out, but the real fun comes from the driving experience. Although somewhat large, the CX9 is very nimble and sometimes feels like a vehicle half its size. I highly recommend it.

  5. Reuben Casper 2025-04-07

The Mazda CX-9 is a fantastic choice for families looking to downsize without sacrificing 3-row flexibility. Despite being slightly smaller than some competitors, the CX-9 boasts excellent materials and fit and finish. Plus, its driving experience and features are unmatched in its class without breaking the bank.
