The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
  • VIN: 1GTR2VE33BZ
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: My GMC which is well cared for and only has 121,000 miles has a rusted through frame (mid-vehicle, left side) which has made the truck unsafe to drive. The steel used is inferior, my neighbor across the street also has this truck, 2 years newer, and is doing the same thing. As I have researched this issue I have found out that this is a critical failure of the GMC Sierra for several model years due to a failure to protect the steel used in northern states which compromises structural integrity. When Toyota had this issue, they stepped up and replaced the frames. General Motors, please tell me what you intend to do with this. It is a 5.3 Litre with 121,000 miles on it, in other words, still a baby for such a fine engine. This is not right. I am seriously discouraged. For my family, this is devastating. I still owe $2000 on this vehicle. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Summary: Over the past few years squirrels have eaten through the fuel line of the truck just above the fuel tank multiple times. As soon as the ignition switch is turned on fuel gets pumped out very near the exhaust system. The driver may not notice anything wrong immediately causing a very real fire risk. Today is the fourth time I have experienced this issue with this truck.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-01
  • VIN: 3GTP2XE22BG
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: This is not a safety item, but one that causes undue financial hardship for the owner. It is widely know that the dash on certain 2007-2014 GM vehicles (generally trucks and SUV's) is susceptible to cracking. This causes devaluation of the vehicle if not fixed and is reported to cost between $2,000-2,500 to repair. It is my opinion that the cause of this is the use of substandard parts by GM and they should issue a recall for the repair of the dash.

The frame is rotted and soon will not pass inspection. The truck looks brand new but Engin compartment, frame and tow parts have rotted. I had the leaf spring separated from rotted frame on the highway. I swerved and almost died. GMC must replace the frame to make this right. Soon I will have no truck after giving GMC so much money. It’s criminal what they have done.

On the way back to Winter Springs, FL on 08/21/2022, I began to hear the dings and a message to service the trailer brake system. I had the vehicle looked at to determine the problem. The fuse was determined to be good, the ground wire was secure and not damaged, and the relay was functioning. I have been told that it may be a defective wire harness which could lead to other safety issues while operating the vehicle. The constant dinging and the blocking of vital messaging by the warning is a distraction and safety issue. A recall should be issued to correct this safety defect.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my truck. I've had it for 2 years now and it's been really comfortable. However, I've noticed that when it comes to heavy-duty tasks, like towing a vintage camper and a 4x4 4 wheeler, it struggles a bit. Even with synthetic oil changes every 5,000 miles, it overheats when trying to pull a hill at 45 mph. Additionally, I had to reinstall the door bumper guards at 37,000 miles. Overall, it's a great truck for everyday use, but for heavy-duty tasks, I think I might prefer my old Silverado. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I noticed that the Yukons have active fuel management and can get up to 22 mpg, which is great! However, I also noticed that the truck you mentioned only gets around 17 mpg, which seems like a missed opportunity. Do you think it could be due to a poor design? Let's discuss further!

Drum brakes! List price 38k + and I got drum brake on the rear-end. Maybe they could improve the safety rating by putting disc brakes all the way around. It would be great to have better brakes on this truck!

I bought this truck in September and I must say, it's a smooth driving pickup. If I had the extra money, I would have gone for the SLT. However, the door handles are in a bad spot and passengers have a hard time finding them. The cab is already starting to make noise and the steering feels cheap. I'm planning on bringing it to the dealer to have it checked out. On the bright side, fuel economy is good, averaging around 17 mpg. The 5.3 liter engine has great power, even with the truck loaded up. I haven't towed anything heavy yet, so I'm not sure how the truck would handle or brake. The leather interior is very comfortable, even on long trips, and you can't beat the full-size room. I got a good deal and the dealership was great.

I have a 2010 GMC 1500 SLE with manual seats. Unfortunately, the seat back has extra play which causes it to move when starting and stopping due to a poor fit or extra clearance. The dealer informed me that this is a common issue and showed me another truck with the same problem. Although it is quite annoying, I am considering finding a good upholstery shop to repair the sloppy seat back. Overall, I am disappointed with the build quality.

We recently traded in our 2000 Chevy 4X4 ext cab, 5.3 loaded with over 128K trouble-free miles. After much consideration, we decided that this truck was the perfect replacement. Not only is it better looking than the new Chevrolet, but it is also priced the same with a higher resale value. We did not consider Ford due to their warranty and multiple engine changes, which showed us instability from within. Our new truck has only 5000 miles on it and is already getting 16 mpg in town and 20+ mpg on the highway. We opted for the loaded version with leather, buckets, and more, except for the sunroof and NAV. The Z-71 4X4 All Terrain package is a bargain. The new 5.3 V8 with the 6-speed automatic is much better than the old powertrain. We even had the dealer put in wheel well liners, Ziebart, and more chrome. If you're in the market for a new truck, look no further and buy one!

I've owned Fords for 12 years, but this is my first GMC. I absolutely love this truck! However, I have noticed that the door handle is in an awkward position. It's a minor detail, but my left knee often bumps against it, which can be uncomfortable for someone with bad knees. Despite this, I must say that this is the smoothest riding truck I have ever owned. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

Our truck has a V6 engine and it performs really well on fuel, which is a huge improvement from our 01 Dodge that is terrible on fuel. The GMC is a great looking truck, even in white. It's a joy to drive with fast pick up and moves down the road like a car. Sometimes I almost forget I'm driving a truck. This is a work truck, so it doesn't have much, just AC, automatic transmission, FM/AM radio, and two-wheel drive, but it's the first truck we've bought new in a long time and we're really enjoying it. GM had some great deals which made this all possible, and we'll be enjoying this truck for years to come.

This truck is really fun and super spacious, so kids have no problem riding in the back. I love the chrome package and 20 inch wheels, they're a really nice touch. I also appreciate the Bluetooth and other comforts that the truck offers. It's really pleasant to drive and easy on the eyes.
