1995 Pontiac Bonneville problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Bonneville is a model line of full-size or mid-size front-engine rear drive cars manufactured and marketed by Pontiac from 1957 until 2005, with a hiatus for model years 1982-1986.

The Bonneville (marketed as the Parisienne in Canada until 1981), and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, are some of the largest Pontiacs ever built; in station wagon body styles they reached just over 230 inches (5.8 m) long, and at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) and more were also some of the heaviest cars produced at the time.

The Bonneville nameplate was introduced as a limited production performance convertible during the 1957 model year, its name taken from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah — an early site of US auto racing and numerous world's land speed record records, itself named after U.S. Army officer Benjamin Bonneville.

  • Summary: IN FEBRUARY 2010, DRIVING AT 5 MPH WHILE MAKING RIGHT TURN ON BUMPY BLACKTOP, THE ENGINE FELL OUT FROM UNDER CAR CAUSING STEERING TO BECOME INOPERABLE. CAR WAS TOWED FROM SCENE. UPON INVESTIGATION IT WAS FOUND THAT 4 (REAR) OF 6 BOLTS HOLDING ENGINE CRADLE TO UNI-BODY FRAME PULLED THROUGH RUSTED RETAINERS. ALL (6) BOLTS, RETAINERS, SPACERS AND INSULATORS WERE REPLACED. THE STEERING LINKAGE WAS REATTACHED AND THE CLOCK SPRING COIL KIT WAS REPLACED (CLOCK SPRING WAS TORN WHEN STEERING LINKAGE SEPARATED). THIS INCIDENT CAUSED A LOT OF CONCERN BECAUSE IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED AT ANY SPEED. TOWING, REPAIRS AND PARTS COST $805.14. 4 MONTHS LATER THE STEERING RACK WAS FOUND TO BE LEAKING AND WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF $450. NO PARTS HAVE BEEN RETAINED BUT PHOTOS OF THE BOLTS IN THE FRAME WITH THE ENGINE SUB FRAME HANGING ARE AVAILABLE. NATURALLY THE RETAINERS THAT FAILED ARE GONE BECAUSE THEY FELL OFF WHEN THEY FAILED. THE ENGINE DID NOT FALL ENTIRELY FROM THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE 2 FRONT BOLTS WERE STILL INTACT AND THE UPPER ENGINE MOUNT HELD THE ENGINE SUB FRAME 2" ABOVE THE ROAD SURFACE. *TR

Negative 1995 Pontiac Bonneville car reviews

  1. Jasper Hoeger 2024-11-07

Bonnie has been a decent vehicle. Although, one week after I purchased it, the sound system smoked, the ride control option with air shocks is great. It promotes a ride like some European performance sedans. Unfortunately, the engine is the first appearance of GM's 3800 II and has used oil since the day I drove it off the lot. There is no excuse for poor engine quality. The only reason I have kept the vehicle for this long (10) is that the ride is much better since I installed Michelin tires. I am disappointed with my experience and will consider other options in the future.

  2. Ernie Mante 2024-11-05

The Bonnevilles are great cars! While the fuel economy isn't the best, it's still good for its size. I was a bit surprised by the top speed, which is 110mph@4500rpm's, but other than that, I absolutely love my car.

  3. Rodrigo Carter 2024-04-25

GM has poor quality. Several components broke with less than 100k miles, including the engine, transmission, driver's door lock, brake master cylinder, steering wheel radio controls, center console latch, automatic headlights, jack holder bracket, fuel pump, fuel gauge, paint on roof and rear quarters, and headliner. Despite having all maintenance performed at recommended intervals and not being abused or neglected, the car's poor quality was evident. Unfortunately, the dealer was of no help. As someone who has owned mostly GM cars in the past, this experience has led me to reconsider my loyalty to the brand.

Positive 1995 Pontiac Bonneville car reviews

  1. Stephan Borer 2025-01-01

I have a long commute of about 65 miles one way. I have used this vehicle extensively for the drive, and it has been exceptionally reliable, despite having 153K miles on it. We purchased the car when it had 72K miles, and it has proven to be a very comfortable car. I am still driving it and plan to continue to do so for quite a while. The only repair items have been the water pump, a/c compressor, tires, brakes, filters, etc. I would definitely buy it again.

  2. Furman West 2024-11-18

My dad got me this car for my 16th birthday, and it's amazing! It has a supercharger, which makes it really sporty and powerful. The instrument panel is great, and I love the redish-orange color. It can hold four of my friends, so we can all go on adventures together. I'm so grateful for this gift!

  3. Waino Morar 2024-11-13

Last year it stopped working completely, but after it was fixed, it was as good as new. I'm sure it will serve you well if you ever get into an accident. It has 77,000 miles and only needed one repair at about 73,000.

  4. Jevon Berge 2024-11-01

The plastic lower intake manifold had to be replaced at 100k, but luckily I was able to do the work myself and save the $350 labor bill. I also had some minor brake issues, but overall it's been a great car! However, I'm feeling a bit tired of driving it since I've had it since my nine-year-old twin boys were born. I've decided to sell the car now, even though it still runs strong with 125k miles on it.

  5. Osvaldo Boyle 2024-10-26

This was my very first car. It's reliable and offers a smooth, steady ride. It was never a problem on gas and was very cheap to fix. It's a great beginner car!
