2011 Cadillac Cts problems

The Cadillac CTS is a luxury car, manufactured and marketed by General Motors from 2003 until 2019 across three generations.

Initially available as a 4-door sedan on the GM Sigma platform, GM had offered the second generation CTS in three body styles: 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe, and 5-door sport wagon also using the Sigma platform — and the third generation was offered only as a sedan, using a stretched version of the GM Alpha platform. High performance sedan variants were offered for each generation, as the CTS-V — with wagon and coupe variants offered for the second generation.

Wayne Cherry and Kip Wasenko designed the exterior of the first generation CTS, marking the production debut of a design language marketed as "Art and Science," first used on the Evoq concept car. John Manoogian III directed the second generation CTS design. Bob Boniface and Robin Krieg designed the exterior of the third generation CTS.

The CTS ended production in 2019 and was replaced by the CT5, which shared its platform with the third and final generation of the CTS in addition to the smaller CT4.

Common 2011 Cadillac Cts problems

The 2011 Cadillac CTS, equipped with a 3.6-liter engine and rear-wheel drive, is known for several common issues that potential buyers should be aware of. These problems include early water pump failure, oil consumption leading to timing chain issues, suspension component wear, and electrical issues.

  1. Early water pump failure: The water pump is a critical component of the cooling system, and its failure can lead to overheating and engine damage. For the 3.6-liter engine in the 2011 CTS, early water pump failure is a known issue. However, the repair is relatively straightforward, as the water pump itself is inexpensive and the job is not too difficult.
  2. Oil consumption and timing chain issues: The 3.6-liter engine in the 2011 CTS tends to burn oil as it accumulates miles, which can lead to timing chain problems if not addressed. If the engine consumes too much oil, the timing chain may become damaged, leading to costly repairs. To help prevent this issue, some owners have installed catch cans or modified PCV systems, which can help reduce oil consumption. Regularly checking the oil level and addressing any excessive oil consumption promptly can help prevent timing chain issues.
  3. Suspension component wear: Over time, suspension components in the 2011 CTS may wear out, leading to issues with ride comfort and handling. While this is not a critical issue, it can result in additional maintenance costs down the road. Suspension components, such as bushings, struts, and control arms, are generally affordable and can be replaced as needed.
  4. Electrical issues: Electrical problems are a significant concern for the 2011 CTS, and they can lead to costly repairs. Potential electrical issues include malfunctioning door handles, antenna handles, and trunk release buttons, as well as wiring that may deteriorate with age. The interior may also creak, and the upholstery may not be particularly resistant to wear and tear. Additionally, corrosion can occur on the left side member, which can weaken the fuel line mount and potentially cause fuel leaks or even fires in extreme cases. Regularly checking the condition of fuel lines and their attachment points is essential to prevent such issues.

In summary, the 2011 Cadillac CTS, while generally reliable, has several common issues that potential buyers should be aware of. These include early water pump failure, oil consumption leading to timing chain issues, suspension component wear, and electrical problems. Regular maintenance, such as checking the oil level and addressing any excessive oil consumption promptly, can help prevent some of these issues. Additionally, being prepared for potential electrical problems and addressing them as they arise can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-15
  • VIN: 1G6DC5EY4B0
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Water leaking in car like raining in car. The car radio and air conditioner panel wouldn’t turn off . It was draining batter after car would be turned off. Then after that water continues to leak. Took out fuse to stop from draining battery but had to buy new battery. Water continues to leak through car. Now ignition switch unable to turn off car . Unhooking the battery and fuse only way to turn off car. Take car to good year for diagnostics and was told water in car ( this I know cause I see raining in car.) This problem has been on going for a few years with the raining. I being unknowing that this would happen. Unable to give Goodyear 4000 dollars to fix problem with no guarantee it would fix problem. My friend that owns shop had to take seats and to find the water in bottom of car and wiring harness and BCM AND FUSE BOX AS WELL PROGRAMMING NEED TO BE DONE THIS AS WELL IS INFO FROM DIAGNOSIS FROM GOODYEAR. Everytime I get out of car just to turn off I would have to lift hood disconnect fuse and then disconnect battery cable . This in it self is unsafe to have to do. Cadillac was a dream car for me. It has become a nightmare. Cause this had been on going in other Cadillac made between 2008 and 2011 . I as well have videos of water in bottom of car and I have had to have car sealed to stop leaking only solution for now. Car is paid for. I NEED GMC TO JUST KNOW HOW UNFAIR IT IS FIR THEM TO HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF THIS PROBLEM AND PUT THE PUBLIC AT RISK OF DANGER. Hopefully after 2011 GMC fixed this problem in on going CADILLAC CARS . I am JUST DISAPPOINTED IN THE CORPORATIONS DISREGARDED FOR PUBLIC SAFTEY. Once again I always loved CADILLAC. Had an opportunity to have one and it has been a nightmare . Causing anxieties and depression. Cause I didn’t understand what was happening. Thank you .AS WELL I HAVE VIDEOS AND UNABLE TO UPLOAD

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-15
  • VIN: 1g6ds5ed5b0
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Under previous GM Safety Recall Bulletin 14233, loss of grease from the center constant velocity (CV) joint over time results in vibrations of the propeller shaft that are transferred to the roll over sensor located on the floor above it. The condition was repaired under this recall in 2014, three years after the vehicle was manufactured. It is now 2022, and the same issue has happened again. Now, GM claims that there are no open recalls on the vehicle, yet the manufacturer defect remains and the issue has resurfaced. Being a safety recall, the repair should be covered by GM as stated in the bulletin (14233) regardless if the repair has been completed in the past, as the defect remains a safety issue. The vehicle in reference has 5 bolts sheared and the last remaining bolt fixing the center CV joint to the transmission was about to fall out, caused by the vibration of the CV joint that lost its grease.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-11-11
  • VIN: 1G6DG5EY3B0
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A NEW 2011 CADILLAC CTS4 IN AUGUST 2012 FROM HERB CHAMBERS CADILLAC IN LYNNFIELD MA. SINCE THAT TIME, I HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR APPROXIMATELY 60,000 MILES. THIS PROBLEM AFFECTS VIRTUALLY ALL (TENS OF THOUSANDS!) CADILLAC CTS AND SRX VEHICLES BUILT SINCE 2008. AFTER DRIVING THE CAR FOR A FEW MONTHS, I NOTICED THAT CONDENSATION APPEARED IN THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES AFTER DRIVING IN OR PARKING IN THE RAIN. THE CONDENSATION WOULD NATURALLY EVAPORATE DURING EVAPORATE AFTER THE RAIN STOPPED. OVER TIME, THE LOW BEAMS BECAME DIMMER AND DIMMER. THEY HAVE BECOME SO DIM THAT DRIVING IN OTHER THAN WELL-LIT AREAS IS DANGEROUS. I CONTACTED THE MIKE ANAGNOS, SERVICE MANAGER AT HERB CHAMBERS CADILLAC. I PRESENTED THE PROBLEM TO HIM. WITHOUT INSPECTING THE CAR, HE STATED THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THAT THE HEADLIGHTS AND HEADLIGHT WIRING HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE STATED THE REPLACEMENT OF TWO HEADLIGHTS COST WOULD BE $1400.00. HE EXPLAINED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY WATER INGRESS TO THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY CAUSING THE HEADLIGHT CONNECTORS TO CORRODE AND 'MELT'. HE OFFERED NO FURTHER EXPLANATION AS TO WHY TWO HEADLIGHTS WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY 10% OF THE CAR'S BLUEBOOK VALUE. I ASKED HIM IF THE CORRODED WIRING THAT MELTED PRESENTED A FIRE HAZARD. HE DID NOT REPLY. I BELIEVE THAT THIS PRESENTS A RISK OF UNDER-HOOD FIRE. IF YOU DO AN INTERNET SEARCH ON CTS OR SRX DIM HEADLIGHTS, YOU WILL FIND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THE OUTRAGEOUS COST TO REPAIR. SEE ALSO CADILLACFORUM.COM AND JUSTANSWERS.COM MY RESEARCH INDICATED THAT WHEN CADILLAC REPAIRS THESE VEHICLES, THEY USE THE SAME PARTS THAT WERE USED WHEN THE CAR WAS BUILT...VIRTUALLY GUARANTEEING THAT THE PROBLEM WILL PRESENT ITSELF AGAIN. THIS CAR IS A DANGER TO DRIVE AT NIGHT AND A FIRE RISK FROM THE 'MELTED' WIRING HARNESS.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 2, 2014 that they are recalling 554,328 model year 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS vehicles manufactured August 16, 2001, to April 28, 2014, and 2004-2006 Cadillac SRX vehicles manufactured March 20, 2003, to August 11, 2006. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 15, 2014. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14172.

  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2011 Cadillac CTS vehicles manufactured October 18, 2010, to June 2, 2011. In the affected vehicles, vibrations from the drive shaft may cause the vehicle's roll over sensor to command the roof rail air bags to deploy.
  • Consequence: If the roof rail air bags deploy unexpectedly, there is an increased risk of crash and injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear drive shaft assembly, free of charge. General Motors distributed an interim letter to owners on August 27, 2014. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14233.

Negative 2011 Cadillac Cts car reviews

I purchased the car used, and unfortunately experienced some issues with it. However, I was able to successfully address each problem as it arose, including the rear end, driveshaft, and computer part. While it required some investment, I am confident in the repairs made and the overall quality of the vehicle.

Two weeks after leasing what we thought would be a wonderful car, the Cadillac started making a terrible knocking noise when started! We brought it back twice and were told BOTH times that it was manufactured that way and for us to just DEAL WITH IT! We tried to turn in our Cadillac for another model, and Nick Jones, our original sales rep, did NOT even have the courtesy to call me back! We are so disappointed with this dealership in ALL regards. However, we are happy to say that we turned in the Cadillac and now own a brand new Lexus ES 350! We cannot even put into words how disappointed we are with this dealership, except that they need to be ashamed of themselves.

I recently purchased a CTS Premium AWD Cadillac and traded in my 2008 Cad.DTS. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely satisfied with my new vehicle. The seats are quite hard and the ride is not as smooth as I had hoped. In fact, my wife and I felt a bit ill after driving the 70 miles from the dealer to our home. Additionally, the cruise control doesn't seem to hold within 3-4 miles per hour, and the service department informed me that there are no adjustments available. I did encounter an issue with the grille-bumper assembly on the front of the car, which doesn't clear the road by more than 3-4 inches. My wife accidentally broke the plastic grille when we turned off a main highway onto a service road with a small dip. I believe that the position of this assembly could be a safety concern. Despite these issues, I'm hopeful that I can work with the dealership to find a solution.

Hi there! I wanted to share some feedback on the Cadillac CTS. I noticed that some small conveniences, like rain-sensing wipers, are no longer available this year. I even asked the dealer about it, but they didn't seem to know either. Another thing I noticed is that the 'easy-out' feature rolls the seat back when the engine is stopped, but it doesn't return to the driving position when the door is opened. It seems like the programming could use some improvement. Maybe they should call it 'easy-out' but also add an 'easy-in' feature. Just my two cents!

I bought a 2010 leftover and initially considered returning it during the first week. Although I generally like it, I have noticed that the interior storage is inadequate and the mileage is less than expected. Additionally, the visibility borders on being dangerous, but I have found ways to compensate such as angle parking only on the end of the row and making only right-hand turns. Previously, I owned a 1998 Q45, and while the CTS is not in the same class, I appreciate that it is American-made with RWD and is probably the best option available.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that my vehicle, which only has 1100 miles on it, sometimes hesitates when I step on the accelerator. I took it back to the dealership, but unfortunately, they told me that all of the 3.6 L, 304hp engines have this issue. They did mention that Cadillac is currently looking into this, but I haven't heard anything from them yet. I actually had a close call on the highway when the engine almost stalled while I was trying to pass someone. Have you experienced anything similar?

This car looks great and performs really well. The back seat is comfortable, although there isn't much leg room.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car so far! It sounds like it's been a reliable companion on your long trips, including the one on Amtrak's Auto Train service to Florida. The sound system, bluetooth, and navigation all seem to be working very well, and the car's performance is excellent. While the car wasn't necessarily designed for efficiency, the fuel economy is still pretty good. It's great to hear that the car is perfect for long trips and passing on two-lane highways! Additionally, it's reassuring to know that the quality seems to be better than your previous Oldsmobile Aurora, which had a few too many problems. It's also great to hear that you haven't experienced any rattles, weird noises, or warranty repairs yet, unlike your experience with the Aurora after 6 months of ownership.

I chose the CTS as my first high-end car. As someone born in the 60s, I can easily recall the days when Cadillac and Lincoln dominated the luxury market. Needless to say, I was thrilled to finally have a Cadillac of my own, especially one with modern styling, excellent fit and finish, and outstanding performance. It's definitely not your Dad's Cadillac! I love the feedback I get through the transmission, whether in automatic or manual mode. The CTS strikes an excellent balance between a quiet ride and performance suspension. It handles corners quite well, yet the road noise typically associated with such a car is absent - enough for passengers to comment on the quiet cabin. The acceleration is more than competent.

I really love the way it handles! The turn radius and pickup are outstanding.
