2018 Lincoln Mkz problems

The Lincoln MKZ, is a four-door, five-passenger mid-size luxury sedan manufactured by Ford and marketed as the Zephyr (MY 2006) and as the MKZ (MY 2007–2020) by Ford's Lincoln brand across two generations in both gasoline and hybrid gas/electric models.
Both generations of the MKZ were manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping & Assembly plant in Mexico. Production ended in 2020 to make way for new Ford vehicles.
First generation (2006–2012)
The 2006 Lincoln Zephyr was initially unveiled in concept form at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, previewing a new entry-level luxury sedan. The front featured Lincoln's signature waterfall grille and jeweled quad projector beam headlights (HID headlights were available). Chrome trim extends along the Zephyr's beltline while the car's rear fascia features LED taillights and dual chrome exhaust tips. All Zephyrs featured low-profile tires on 17x7.5-inch wheels with painted aluminum versions standard and chrome versions optional.
Lincoln officially revived the Zephyr name in the fall of 2005; the vehicles were based on the CD3 platform, which was derived from the Mazda 6. Lincoln had previously used the Zephyr name in the late 1930s for the smaller Lincoln-Zephyr line of mid-size vehicles. The "Zephyr" name had also previously been used by Mercury during the late 1970s and early 1980s, for several vehicles built on the Fox Platform.
The Zephyr's sole powertrain was a 3.0 L DOHC Duratec V6 mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission; identical to the V6 powertrain that was optional in the Fusion and Milan. The interior is largely unique to the Lincoln, along with different equipment packaging. The 2006 Zephyr started at a base MSRP of $28,995 USD, ranging up to $35,340 USD when fully optioned.
Though slightly smaller and front-wheel drive, the Zephyr was marketed as a replacement for Lincoln's previous entry level mid-size, the rear-wheel drive Lincoln LS. To facilitate a smooth transition, the Zephyr and LS were sold parallel to each other during the 2006 model year, the first model year of the Zephyr and the last for the LS. For 2007 the model was renamed MKZ, and took over the LS' market with sales beginning in September 2006. Lincoln's decision to resurrect the Zephyr name refers to the very early days of Lincoln before World War II. At that time, the only Lincoln manufactured was the Lincoln K-series which was a full-size sedan, and Lincoln, under the direction of Edsel Ford, Henry Ford's only son, hoped to introduce a smaller product to compete with the Packard One-Twenty, and the LaSalle, a smaller sibling offered at Cadillac dealerships.
The Zephyr featured a revised interior from the Fusion and Milan. The design featured shapes with real ebony or maple wood inserts (depending on desired trim) in metallic frames. These surfaces were contrasted with chrome-bezeled gauges, circular, chrome-finished vents and a metallic center stack where the radio and climate controls are housed. The Zephyr's steering wheel was leather-wrapped with real wood grips and satin-nickel audio, climate, and cruise control buttons. White LED backlighting was used for the Zephyr's controls and instrumentation. Leather seating surfaces were standard in all models.
Some of these standard features in the Zephyr included: cruise control, automatic headlights, fog lights, power door locks, "global" power windows (all windows can lower simultaneously at the push of a button), power adjustable and heated mirrors with puddle lamps, remote keyless entry, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel with redundant audio and climate controls, dual-zone automatic climate control, a universal garage door opener, 10-way power driver and front passenger seats, rear-seat reading lamps, and a six-speaker audio system with an AM/FM stereo radio and a six-disc, MP3-compatible CD changer. Optional in the Zephyr was a power moonroof, a DVD-based satellite navigation system, HID headlights, heated and cooled front seats, and an industry-first THX II-Certified audio system with a six-disc, MP3-compatible CD changer and ten speakers. Safety features included standard dual front-side airbags, front seat-deployed side airbags, and curtain airbags that extend from the front to rear seats.
Mechanically the Zephyr was closely related to the Fusion and Milan. As mentioned, all three cars were based on Ford's CD3 platform, which was in turn derived from the Mazda 6. Like these cars the Zephyr is natively front-wheel drive (FWD). The Zephyr uses a coil-over damper, short- and long-arm (SLA) front suspension with double-ball-joint control arms while the rear suspension is an independent multi-link design with lower control arms and a 17 mm (0.7 in) stabilizer bar. Spring rates, bushings, and dampers have been specially tuned for the Zephyr to provide excellent ride comfort without compromising handling. All Zephyrs feature standard four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with traction control. The sole engine offered in the Zephyr was an all-aluminum 3.0 L DOHC Duratec V6 producing 221 hp (165 kW) at 6250 rpm and 205 lb·ft (278 N·m) of torque at 4800 rpm. This engine was mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission and had a final drive ratio of 3.46:1. This powertrain was identical to the V6 powertrain available in the Fusion and Milan from 2006 to 2009. With this powertrain the Zephyr could accelerate from zero to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 7.5 seconds. The FWD Zephyr came with a 17.5 US gal (66 L; 15 imp gal) fuel tank and is rated to deliver 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) in city driving and 26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg‑imp) on the highway based on the revised 2008 EPA fuel efficiency measurement standards.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-28
- VIN: 3LN6L5F90JR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Upon driving north on rt. 95 in GA our pan Aramaic moonroof unexpectedly exploded. There was no apparent reason. No debris was present and environmental conditions were not extreme. ( sunny day about 72 degrees F) . The explosion was very loud and alarming creating a risk of losing control of the vehicle. Bodily injury could have resulted if the moon roof cover was open and chards of glass were shot into the vehicle. We have not contact the manufacturer yet , but plan to. There was absolutely no warning of this. It was sudden, unexpected and explosive. The tempered glass was shattered and glass was missing from all along all 4 sides of the moon roof. Very scary. I assume this is due to a manufacturing defect.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-23
- VIN: 3LN6L5F98JR
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I own a 2018 Lincoln MKZ. Starting the second week in January I started to notice a strange smell in the cabin of my car and outside of my car. I told my husband that I was smelling something strange, and he noticed that the exhaust was a billowy white smoke. My husband noticed that this was not a good sign. We also noticed that my Lincoln app was saying there was a misfire in cylinder 2. My husband checked my coolant and saw that my coolant reservoir was completely empty. My husband added coolant and informed me that we would need to take the car to the shop. By the following week ([XXX]) my husband checked my coolant again and saw that my reservoir was empty again and my app was saying cylinder 2 was misfiring again. On Tuesday [XXX], we took the car to the Suburban Ford of Waterford to have my car looked at. On Wednesday [XXX], the dealership called my husband and informed him that I would need a new engine in my car because the coolant is leaking into cylinder and mixing with the oil which is causing the misfire in cylinder 2. The dealership informed us that this was a problem that Ford and Lincoln had with the 2.0 and 1.5 engines for the MKZ and Fusion. The 2018 MKZ was affected by this problem. The dealership informed us that Ford/Lincoln replaced the engines after they noticed the problem, but they said my car must have had the older engine that had the problem. As you can imagine I was very upset to hear that my car, which is only six years old, would need a new engine. Not only was I upset to hear this, but I am also upset about possibly shouldering the financial burden of a new engine when this is a manufacturing problem that is no fault of my own. Also, since Ford/Lincoln knew about this issue why did they not send out a recall notice about this issue? I have found out that the oil mixing with the coolant causes corrosion in the cylinders. I recently rented a Continental and have driven (and just leased) an MKZ. Lincoln is doing a great job building quiet luxury cars. It's refreshing that they aren't solely focused on chasing BMW owners who are intent on 0-60 times, 60-0 braking, hard cornering, etc. This car isn't about that. If you prefer old school Lincoln, Lexus, etc., I think you will really enjoy this car. I test drove multiple versions before finally settling on a While I find the interior quality of the MKZ excellent, I wish there were more color choices available than just black or beige. I really liked the terra-cotta color available in the Reserve models, but unfortunately, it's not an option with the Select. That being said, I really enjoy driving this car and all of the other Lincolns I've been in recently. You should definitely check them out as there are some good deals to be had! At 8,500 miles, I'm still loving the car for its quiet and smoothness. I came out of a Fusion, which was an exceptional car, but the MKZ truly takes the experience to another level of luxury. With the supremely comfortable (base) seats, the car is perfect for relaxing long-distance drives. I occasionally play with the driving modes (I push 'S' when passing), but I've never bothered to shift manually. The mileage is about what I expected, mid to high 20's, but it should be better. I suspect the issues are with the transmission and the weight of the car. In 6th gear, the engine is turning 2,500 rpm, which is a little high. On the freeway, I drive between 70-79 mph. I follow some of the MKZ discussion forums and learned how to upgrade Sync 3 to version 3.0. I did that a couple of weeks ago, and the system seems a little less buggy. I'm still using the Sync 3 interface exclusively and have shut off Apple Car Play, even though the Apple Maps are much improved with iOS 11. The base stereo in the MKZ is unlistenable, especially with Sirius radio, which is even worse. Lincoln should follow suit with Lexus and install the XM satellite receivers, which sound far better. At a minimum, Lincoln should install the Sony system from the Fusion Titanium, which includes HD radio.I really wish I had upgraded to the Revel stereo (note for 2018, the MKZ Reserve model now includes the Revel stereo as standard... great decision, Lincoln!). Unfortunately, the tires are not very good and I've noticed some wheelspin and loss of grip on wet roads. However, I must say that the car has been completely trouble-free for the first 8,500 miles. Despite my gripes, I still love the car.

Greetings, I have driven my 2017 MKZ 3.0L V6 AWD sedan for about 10,000 miles now and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. When I ordered the car, I did not have the chance to test drive this particular combination, but I am pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I compared the MKZ to the Audi A4 and the BMW 330i, and while the Audi was underwhelming, the BMW had a throwback look that I appreciated. However, the BMW interior did not impress me and the dealers were not accommodating. I ultimately decided to order the MKZ Reserve with the big engine and I have not regretted it. The car has high-tech safety features, quick acceleration, and flawless performance. Although I have had a couple of minor repairs, the dealer has been prompt and efficient in fixing them. I am still very pleased with my purchase and I am getting an impressive 27 MPG on my daily freeway commute, even with the AC on during summer. Thank you for your time.I have just over 19,000 miles on the car and I am still very pleased with it. The 3.0L V6 engine provides more than enough power for me, and I am still averaging 27 MPG in mostly urban freeway driving, using regular unleaded fuel. I have only filled up with premium unleaded on a couple of occasions to test for a performance increase, but it was not necessary. I have been doing full synthetic oil changes elsewhere and have not had to return the car to the dealer for any service work. The only criticism I have is the rather narrow opening of the trunk lid due to the fastback design of the rear window. However, this has only been a problem when transporting large items. In July 2018, with 29,000 miles, I returned the car for service as the oil pan required a new seal. Although it was a minor leak, the dealer was very accommodating with a free loaner and oil change. The car has been performing better than expected with 27.2 miles of mostly highway travel. As of July 2019, the MKZ has just over 46,000 miles and there have been no problems or issues to speak of. The mileage is consistent at 27.3 average since new, mostly highway commuting. The paint is gorgeous and the leather interior still looks and smells great. There has been no oil consumption between changes of full synthetic. Overall, this is still a very fine car.

I've owned many cars in my life, from everyday drivers to top-of-the-line luxury models from GM, Lincoln, and Jaguar. I always thought that Jaguar had the best ride and comfort. My last car was a new Buick LaCrosse Premium, which I bought last year based on what I had heard about how it drove and how quiet it was. It was nice, but not what I would call luxurious regarding the ride, which was rather harsh and not nearly as quiet as I had hoped for. Then one day, my wife saw a new MKZ up close. She said she liked the looks of it and wondered why we hadn't considered one of those. My answer was, 'I don't know!' I loved the new looks of the Lincoln, which reminded me of a Bentley. It's embarrassing to admit, but in the 45 years of our marriage, we've owned over 50 cars. I can honestly say that of all the cars we've owned, I don't think I've ever driven a car that was more pleasing than the new MKZ. With the new sound-deadening technology inside the car, the comfort of the seats, as well as the ride, I've never owned a finer car. It's truly a pleasure to drive. It's rare when you can drive a car that's as quiet and comfortable as sitting in your own living room. If you're thinking about a new car, you'd be amiss if you don't drive a 2018 or later Lincoln MKZ.

UPDATE 12-27-17 Updating my review on this vehicle based on 14 months of ownership. Overall, I am still very satisfied with my Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. Despite some minor fit and finish issues, the styling of this sedan really stands out against a tired landscape of look-alike sedans from other car manufacturers. Fuel economy remains rock solid between 40 and 41 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. The ADAS features for accident avoidance, parking, and maintaining driver awareness have been great. The quiet comfort of the car is a real differentiator compared to other vehicles in the entry-level luxury sedan segment. Although I have encountered a few warranty issues, my local Lincoln dealer and the Lincoln concierge service have done an excellent job of addressing my concerns. I would still highly recommend the MKZ Hybrid as a solid value compared to other vehicles in its class. However, prospective buyers should strongly consider purchasing Lincoln's extended warranty for this vehicle. ORIGINAL REVIEW I purchased a 2017 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid Reserve w/ Technology package in September 2016. The purchase price was $8k - $20k below comparable European and Japanese alternatives. I have thus far driven the car about 2200 miles, with about 80% highway driving and 20% city driving. The average MPG is around 40 - 42 mpg. The acceleration is adequate in most situations.I was really attracted to this vehicle because of its smooth powertrain, well-tuned suspension, and quiet cabin at highway cruising speeds. The exterior appearance is impressive and fairly unique, although some of the exterior trim pieces are made of low-quality plastic. The quality of interior materials is very good, particularly the wood trim and leather upholstery. The ADAS features, including adaptive cruise, accident avoidance, blindspot monitoring, backup-assist, and lane-keep assist, are very useful in day-to-day driving. Lincoln's driver assistance features are unobtrusive until really needed. The on-board infotainment system is light years ahead of Toyota and BMW in terms of usability. However, the Sync 3 system has bugs around iPod indexing, accuracy of on-board clock, Android Auto compatibility, and stability of mobile apps. One bright spot in Sync 3 is Lincoln's NAV system coupled with Sirius traffic information, which is a real godsend for avoiding heavy traffic at rush hour. Unfortunately, the stability issues I've encountered in Sync 3 appear to extend to other vehicle subsystems. I presently suspect electrical gremlins are lurking in the interior lighting system and the sound system, although all installed equipment is performing normally for the moment. As long as reliability holds up, backed in part by Lincoln's long base warranty, I expect I will remain satisfied with this vehicle. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to a friend or family member, with reservations noted above regarding reliability.

Great little muscle car! The throaty sound and impressive acceleration make it a blast to drive. The gas mileage isn't too bad for 400 horses. The driving position is surprisingly comfortable and the ride is pretty nice, although it could be a little softer. The electronics work well and are intuitive, making it an easy car to learn to use. Plus, it's fun to drive! There are lots of nice features, including lights that come on when you approach the car with the key in your pocket.

Our car has been serviced 5 times in the 3 months we've had it. Although we've had some issues with the battery and the stereo, we're confident that the dealership will resolve these problems. We've been impressed with the sound quality of the stereo, but have experienced some issues with Sirius dropping channels. Additionally, we've noticed a flickering in the rear cabin light, which the dealership has been unable to replicate. Despite this, we're confident that the dealership will resolve these issues and we're looking forward to enjoying our $55,000+ car. We appreciate Lincoln's efforts to help us and we're confident that they will continue to provide excellent service. While we've had some issues, we're still happy with our purchase and would recommend Lincoln to others.

The car has been experiencing a myriad of issues such as rattles, knocks, sluggish performance, and electrical problems. Unfortunately, the dealer has not been helpful in resolving these issues, stating that they cannot fix the problem unless it happens while they are looking at it. Despite providing video evidence, the dealer has refused to service the vehicle and even took offense to an unsolicited opinion survey from Lincoln. After contacting Lincoln, they stated that the dealers are independent and can make their own decisions. While this experience has been disappointing, we remain confident in the quality of our 2014 MKX. However, we will not be purchasing a Lincoln vehicle again.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 MKZ. Unfortunately, I've noticed some blisters and chipping paint on the hood. It seems like there might not have been any primer applied before painting, which has resulted in this issue. I've reached out to Lincoln about it, but unfortunately they have not taken responsibility for their work. It's disappointing to hear that they have known about this defect for years. Thank you for listening to my experience!

List of intermittent problems and resolutions: (1) The left door window was not staying closed, but it has been fixed through a program update. (2) There was a loud humming noise at certain speeds, but it has been fixed through a noise cancellation program update. (3) The front fan was making a squealing noise, but it has been fixed by replacing the fan. (4) The trunk was not closing and kept popping back open. Unfortunately, the dealer has been unable to find the problem and it remains unfixed. (5) The dashboard is displaying a warning that the front camera is not operative, but the dealer has been unable to find the problem and it remains unfixed.
