2016 Lincoln Mkz problems

The Lincoln MKZ, is a four-door, five-passenger mid-size luxury sedan manufactured by Ford and marketed as the Zephyr (MY 2006) and as the MKZ (MY 2007–2020) by Ford's Lincoln brand across two generations in both gasoline and hybrid gas/electric models.

Both generations of the MKZ were manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping & Assembly plant in Mexico. Production ended in 2020 to make way for new Ford vehicles.

First generation (2006–2012)

The 2006 Lincoln Zephyr was initially unveiled in concept form at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, previewing a new entry-level luxury sedan. The front featured Lincoln's signature waterfall grille and jeweled quad projector beam headlights (HID headlights were available). Chrome trim extends along the Zephyr's beltline while the car's rear fascia features LED taillights and dual chrome exhaust tips. All Zephyrs featured low-profile tires on 17x7.5-inch wheels with painted aluminum versions standard and chrome versions optional.

Lincoln officially revived the Zephyr name in the fall of 2005; the vehicles were based on the CD3 platform, which was derived from the Mazda 6. Lincoln had previously used the Zephyr name in the late 1930s for the smaller Lincoln-Zephyr line of mid-size vehicles. The "Zephyr" name had also previously been used by Mercury during the late 1970s and early 1980s, for several vehicles built on the Fox Platform.

The Zephyr's sole powertrain was a 3.0 L DOHC Duratec V6 mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission; identical to the V6 powertrain that was optional in the Fusion and Milan. The interior is largely unique to the Lincoln, along with different equipment packaging. The 2006 Zephyr started at a base MSRP of $28,995 USD, ranging up to $35,340 USD when fully optioned.

Though slightly smaller and front-wheel drive, the Zephyr was marketed as a replacement for Lincoln's previous entry level mid-size, the rear-wheel drive Lincoln LS. To facilitate a smooth transition, the Zephyr and LS were sold parallel to each other during the 2006 model year, the first model year of the Zephyr and the last for the LS. For 2007 the model was renamed MKZ, and took over the LS' market with sales beginning in September 2006. Lincoln's decision to resurrect the Zephyr name refers to the very early days of Lincoln before World War II. At that time, the only Lincoln manufactured was the Lincoln K-series which was a full-size sedan, and Lincoln, under the direction of Edsel Ford, Henry Ford's only son, hoped to introduce a smaller product to compete with the Packard One-Twenty, and the LaSalle, a smaller sibling offered at Cadillac dealerships.

The Zephyr featured a revised interior from the Fusion and Milan. The design featured shapes with real ebony or maple wood inserts (depending on desired trim) in metallic frames. These surfaces were contrasted with chrome-bezeled gauges, circular, chrome-finished vents and a metallic center stack where the radio and climate controls are housed. The Zephyr's steering wheel was leather-wrapped with real wood grips and satin-nickel audio, climate, and cruise control buttons. White LED backlighting was used for the Zephyr's controls and instrumentation. Leather seating surfaces were standard in all models.

Some of these standard features in the Zephyr included: cruise control, automatic headlights, fog lights, power door locks, "global" power windows (all windows can lower simultaneously at the push of a button), power adjustable and heated mirrors with puddle lamps, remote keyless entry, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel with redundant audio and climate controls, dual-zone automatic climate control, a universal garage door opener, 10-way power driver and front passenger seats, rear-seat reading lamps, and a six-speaker audio system with an AM/FM stereo radio and a six-disc, MP3-compatible CD changer. Optional in the Zephyr was a power moonroof, a DVD-based satellite navigation system, HID headlights, heated and cooled front seats, and an industry-first THX II-Certified audio system with a six-disc, MP3-compatible CD changer and ten speakers. Safety features included standard dual front-side airbags, front seat-deployed side airbags, and curtain airbags that extend from the front to rear seats.

Mechanically the Zephyr was closely related to the Fusion and Milan. As mentioned, all three cars were based on Ford's CD3 platform, which was in turn derived from the Mazda 6. Like these cars the Zephyr is natively front-wheel drive (FWD). The Zephyr uses a coil-over damper, short- and long-arm (SLA) front suspension with double-ball-joint control arms while the rear suspension is an independent multi-link design with lower control arms and a 17 mm (0.7 in) stabilizer bar. Spring rates, bushings, and dampers have been specially tuned for the Zephyr to provide excellent ride comfort without compromising handling. All Zephyrs feature standard four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with traction control. The sole engine offered in the Zephyr was an all-aluminum 3.0 L DOHC Duratec V6 producing 221 hp (165 kW) at 6250 rpm and 205 lb·ft (278 N·m) of torque at 4800 rpm. This engine was mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission and had a final drive ratio of 3.46:1. This powertrain was identical to the V6 powertrain available in the Fusion and Milan from 2006 to 2009. With this powertrain the Zephyr could accelerate from zero to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 7.5 seconds. The FWD Zephyr came with a 17.5 US gal (66 L; 15 imp gal) fuel tank and is rated to deliver 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) in city driving and 26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg‑imp) on the highway based on the revised 2008 EPA fuel efficiency measurement standards.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-10
  • VIN: 3LN6L2J90GR
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: While driving a complete loss of brake incident occurred. The brake pedal got still, and the car would not stop. Luckily, we were close to home and was able to slow down enough to turn around and get home slowly. Upon investigation it was found the coupler (Part that connects camshaft to brake pump) failed causing the brake pump to not work. This situation is extremely dangerous as we had no prior warning to failure. Even the complete loss of brakes did not have any indicator lights during the incident. Considering the operation of the coupler, how could something so small and so important be weak enough to snap internally, causing a complete loss of brakes with no warning.

STEERING PROBLEM

Honolulu Ford stated we have a faulty steering rack and there is a recall for this issue 19V632000 but our car is not on the recall because the state we purchased is not listed. We purchased the car in Alaska and we currently live in Hawaii. We now have to pay $3600 dollars to have the car fixed. Since there is a recall in the system for the same exact problem that happened why are we paying to fix our car? The dealership is not providing a car of us and now we have to rent a car until ours is repaired.

  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Fiesta, 2014-2016 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles sold, or ever registered in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.
  • Consequence: A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and Ford or Lincoln dealers will replace the side door latches, free of charge. The recall began September 21, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S15.

  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015-2016 Ford Edge, and 2016 Lincoln MKX vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Road salt or other contaminants may corrode the electric power steering gear motor attachment bolts.
  • Consequence: If the bolts corrode, the steering gear motor may detach from the gear housing resulting in a loss of power steering assist, requiring a greater steering effort, especially at lower speeds, and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gear motor bolts and apply a wax sealer. If any of the steering gear motor attachment bolts are broken or missing, a new steering gear will be installed in the vehicle. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began October 18, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S26.

  • Consequence: A steering wheel detachment can cause a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering wheel bolt with a longer bolt, free of charge. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S08.

Negative 2016 Lincoln Mkz car reviews

It's a nice looking car, but it has a few areas that could be improved. The six cylinder engine doesn't have massive torque and can be a bit thirsty. The transmission isn't particularly smooth and holds high RPM at highway speeds, which contributes to a high fuel consumption. The steering isn't very intuitive and the steering wheel can be hard to turn. The headlights are LED, but the lighting perimeter is short and dark. The touch sensitive screen controls can be slow to respond and the navigation screen has a 2-4 second delay when changing scenes. Although I've driven 1100 miles, I've been to the dealership multiple times for rattles and vibrations. The quality of the interior materials could be better, as the leather on the seats bubbles and finger prints are easily shown everywhere, including the navigation screen. The cooled seats only cool the bottom cushion, but not the seat back, which the dealership said is normal. It takes 15 minutes for the heated seats to start operating. The THX audio system is a bit of a disappointment, as no matter what setting you choose, it sounds dull and subdued.

The 2016 MKZ 3.7L (Edmunds won't let me select the 3.7L engine option) was assigned to me as a rental car this week, and I have been driving it all week. In my opinion, this car does not meet the standards of its class. The exterior design is not appealing, and the interior, although it may seem premium at first glance, is disappointing upon closer inspection. The handling is subpar, and the torque steer is a concern. When compared to other cars in its price range, such as the Mercedes CLA or BMW 320, the MKZ falls short. There are many excellent new and CPO options available in this price range, and the MKZ simply does not compete. In my extensive search for a car in the $35K price range, I have found that the Lincoln MKZ falls short in comparison to its competitors. However, I do appreciate the recent makeover that was inspired by Aston Martin styling cues. It is disappointing that the new model is lacking basic features such as an adjustable steering column or sunroof, especially considering the increased price point. Overall, I believe there are better options available in the $30K - $40K price range. While Edmunds may rate it as average, I personally cannot recommend the Lincoln MKZ.

I purchased a MKZ four years ago with 26,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the vehicle. The water pump required a repair at 65,000 miles, which cost $2400. Additionally, the car is now burning oil at 74,000 miles. I also noticed that the heated seats are not functioning, despite checking the fuse. Overall, I would not recommend this vehicle. However, I remain hopeful that Ford will produce a more reliable car in the future.

    1. The MKZ Hybrid is advertised as getting 40+ mpg city/highway, but in reality, the best my wife and I ever get is 36.6 mpg. Our average is between 30 and 35 mpg. So, it's important to keep in mind that the actual fuel efficiency may differ from what the salesman claims. 2. On the bright side, the style of the car is incredible. We both love the look and feel of the interior, and the outside is pretty sleek as well. However, it's worth noting that the 'white' version is not a true white - more of a pearlescent white. 3. At a full tank, the dash reads 500 miles to empty, give or take some. However, we get maybe 350 miles before we have to actually fill up. 4. Unfortunately, we have had some mechanical issues with the car since we drove it off the lot a few months ago. The dealership in Stockton was initially hesitant to believe us, but we were eventually able to get a fuel fumes leak repaired and a purge valve replaced. Despite these issues, we were disappointed with how we were treated by the dealership. We had to call them countless times to even get an answer on our problems. In comparison, Lincoln owners are supposed to be treated better. My suggestion would be to consider the Ford Fusion hybrid instead, which has the same engine system as the MKZ Hybrid but is 30% cheaper. Don't spend big money on something that won't deliver what it promises.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I actually own a 3.7 V-6, but it wasn't listed as an option on this page, so I selected the 2.0 option. I was lucky enough to find a pre-owned car with only 8k miles and saved almost $20,000 in the process! At first, I had some negative impressions, but after living with the vehicle for a couple of weeks, I've changed my mind. Here are some things I've noticed: 1. The ergonomics are pretty good, although I wish there was less of a drop from the seat level to the feet space. 2. The electronic controls were a bit of a pain to get used to, but once I set everything up according to my preference, I didn't have any issues. 3. The car is really fast, especially in sport mode! The V-6 engine sounds amazing. 4. I accidentally drained the battery when I first got the car because I didn't know how to properly lock it. Just make sure you press the lock sign twice until you hear the sound and visually check that all the lights are off. Overall, I'm really happy with my MKZ and I'm even considering buying another one in a couple of years, especially since the 2017 V-6 versions have 350 and 400 hp respectively and both have twin-turbos. Of course, it all depends on whether I can find another great deal on a pre-owned one like my current MKZ. Thanks for reading!

You're looking at one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen, and guess what? It's mine! Not only is it stunning, but it's also incredibly reliable.

  2. Webster Thompson 2024-11-08

I've been driving this car for 5 months now and it's been absolutely wonderful. I purchased it CPO with just over 17,000 miles and opted for the extended warranty on top of the existing one. I can't say enough good things about this vehicle! It rides and handles beautifully, especially in Sport mode. The heated steering wheel and cooled seats are fantastic, and the sound system is wonderful, especially with satellite radio. Plus, it's that beautiful red color! However, I did have some issues with Lincoln Service. Some dealers didn't offer loaner cars, and when I brought my car in for a battery issue and a trunk that wouldn't open or close fully, they were unable to fix it because there was no code. I think a new trunk module would have been a good start. Unfortunately, this experience has made me reconsider buying another Lincoln if their service is consistently poor.

You won't find a better value and performance in the market! I did a ton of research and the car sold itself. You have to test drive one!

  4. Jaylan Walter 2024-08-11

I absolutely love this new 2016 MKZ Hybrid! It's a big, luxurious sedan that consistently gets an impressive 39.2 mpg. As someone who commutes 62 miles each way every day, I was looking for an upgrade from my Toyota Prius, and boy did I find it! The total luxury of this car is evident from top to bottom, with adjustable lumbar seats that are key for me now that I'm in my 50s and my back has gotten weaker over the years. I used to be in pain from the Prius seats during my long commute, but not anymore! I'm really enjoying this car, which is way more than I could've afforded in a Mercedes, Audi, or Lexus. I previously owned a used Audi A6, and I can confidently say that this Lincoln is comparable but better. I love the touch screen controls, and even though I'm not a tech person at all, I haven't experienced any of the issues that some people have reported. Overall, I'm thrilled with this car!

  5. Adrien Heller 2024-08-04

Initially, I didn't care for the 'retro' looks of the mid'teens Lincoln lineup, but they grow on you over time, and the styling is unique, not a knock-off of what some other brand did recently. My 2016 base MLZ rides nearly as well as my 2009 MKS did, and the 29.4 MPG, mostly long commutes over 20,000 miles of driving in the past year, is far superior to anything I've had with this level of comfort and refinement. I'd give my MKZ five stars but for one thing: The infotainment system is not easy to use (and I would prefer not to have my personal data collected, so I don't connect my phone, etc.). This is less of an issue for me as I prefer to drive without listening to anything while behind the wheel.
